!=.2>=?&@A&!>=&7==BKortney Hoen started teaching at Guardian Angels in March of 2009, as the long term substitute teacher for Fifth grade. She was then offered the full-time Kindergarten teacher position, it is now her 2nd year. She says, "I have enjoyed my time so far at GA, especially the students and staff!"

Kortney also works a second job, but when she is not doing that or here at school; she tries to keep herself active! During the school year, she plays on a recreational volleyball team. In the summer is when she tries to catch-up on all her book reading (She loves all genres of books). If she’s not home with her dog, Harley, she is playing on a women’s league and a co-ed league softball team and she also plays sand volleyball! In addition, she loves to hang out with her nieces and nephew in the summer by taking them to Valleyfair, a movie, or her favorite--going to her cabin and enjoying the serenity of peace on earth, by reading, relaxing, playing games with her family, swimming, or her favorite--going jet skiing.

You want the most out of life? You gotta check out Cursillo

(ker-SEE-yo)!"""""""The Cursillo is an encounter with Christ. It promotes a spiritual revitalization of our world. By living a fully Christian life, we bring Christ to others, including members of our family, school, workplace, nursing homes, our relationships, etc.

Cursillo develops a consciousness that we are called to be active, modern-day disciples.

In the Cursillo Movement, we approach evangelization as a very natural act of being Christ-like within each of our daily activities. We realize that while most people would like to live their lives in a Christ-like manner, the pressures of the world often make this difficult.

The Cursillo Movement provides a method and a technique to provide each of us with the tools, the mentality, the strength, and the support to make this natural type of evangelization possible.

The Cursillo Movement is dedicated to spreading the Word of God and helping people form a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.

The Cursillo employs a method that emphasizes the importance of a balanced life of spirituality, continued spiritual study, and action. The Cursillo method enables you to:

! Expand your prayer life

! Spiritually grow through possible on-going formation that increases your knowledge about God's Word and your Catholic faith.

! Spread God's Word in a natural way to the people you interact with in the very environments in which you live.

A growing number of parishioners at Guardian Angels and elsewhere are attending these “encounters” … and they are finding the enriching spiritual lives they’ve long wanted.

To go on the upcoming Cursillo retreats in March, please contact Laurie Forner, Scott Forner, Jean Rief, Jim Healy, Tina Healy, Scott Guillemette, Marie Guillemette, Jenny Richelsen, Melanie Forner, Fr. Paul Jarvis, or Mike Richelsen. They are found in your parish directory.

Otherwise contact Jean Rief at [email protected], or 612-245-9252. Or Laurie and Ken Forner at [email protected] or 612-201-7002

For more information, you may also want to check the Twin Cities Cursillo website www.tc-cursillo.org

Did you know this about YOU?I get lots of letters and cards from locals who check out G.A. for the first time … or who may be visiting Chaska and attend Mass at what is clearly Chaska’s landmark … or are curious parishioners from nearby parishes/congregations … and they invariably say something similar to what a recent newcomer wrote about you:

“Although I have been to (G.A.) twice … I plan on continuing attending, and hopefully get more involved.! At each Mass I attended, I sat with the nicest people.! I felt so welcome.! I just wanted to let you know how G.A. brought me back to the Church.! And I hope to stay.”

There are lots of Catholic and Protestant churches that have stimulating liturgies and homilies/sermons. A ton of them have brand new facilities, a majestic landmark footprint in the city, or cathedralesque beauty equal to ours. Yes, these features attract lots of folks.

But what keeps ‘em coming back ... what gets them to actually join … what actually engages them in the life of the church and “The Way” of Jesus Christ is …

YOU!More specifically, your friendliness, your pride about your parish and its accomplishments, your welcoming spirit. How you introduce newcomers to others. How you actually invite people downstairs for donuts and coffee. And when you see someone sitting alone – in the pew or at a St. Francis Hall table – you actually join them.

In an age where people are disconnected and lonely, YOU are the antidote. That’s the secret of G.A., really. Keep on doing this until we get to 1,500 households, then you can taper off the friendliness just a wee bit. ~ Fr. Paul

It has recently come to our attention that many don’t know that Guardian Angels Church has been accepting aluminum cans for recycling for many, many years now! This has been a very successful revenue source for the church and funds our ministries. Please bring your cans to the can shed behind the church and we will take them from there. Questions? Please call the parish office.

Do you ever wonder…… if what we do at, and through, Guardian Angels parish and our school is working?

Check out the following thank you note sent last Summer to me about a parishioner and G.A. School alumnus representing us before others.

I just found it in my desk, and thought you might be inspired by it. Believe me, there are a lot of parishioners – young and not-so-young – who could be receiving similar expressions of appreciation.

~ Fr. Paul

Next weekend, March 12 & 13, you will be asked to make a financial commitment to the Catholic Services Appeal (CSA). Have you given prayerful consideration to your gift for the 2011 CSA? Have you? If you simply make a gift with the change in your pockets, we will not be able to serve all those who need our help. We need each of you to help us be the “Hands of Christ” in supporting the people and the work of our Archdiocese.

Pastoral Care Ministry at Guardian Angels

Pastoral Care at Guardian Angels focuses on visiting parishioners who have become sick or have had an accident in the short term or due to age or illness in the long term and are no longer able to come, worship, and pray with their Church community on a regular basis. Pastoral Care Ministers bring the church community to them through supportive and practical ways such as visits, bringing communion, as well as supplying news of events and parish literature.

Pastoral care derives its name and nature from the meaning of shepherd and suggests the work of the shepherd with the flock. That is why Cannon Law speaks of Pastoral Care as a necessary service for parish life.

Mother Teresa called herself a "pencil in the hands of God." During Lent, the Church invites you to look at what God has "written" thus far with, through and in you.

Lent is an especially appropriate time in which to take the journey back in time to trace your life story, your autobiography. An excellent guide for such a journey is the person upon whom the season of Lent centers: Jesus. The parts of Jesus' journey parallel your own.

1. Your background. You'll need to look at your background: where you grew up, your parents and friends, what you did when you were younger. Look at these parts in the life of Jesus and reflect on what is similar between your journey and Jesus’. How have your surroundings shaped you? What's happening right now? Where is there division in the world and in your life?

2. Your public life. You are part of a neighborhood, a parish, a nation and a world. In this context, you have had experiences of grace. You have been called to consider the purpose of your life. You have had to wrestle with those who have blocked your achievement of your goals, your purpose. Who has helped you on your journey of faith? As baptism was for Jesus, what has been a "God experience" in your life?

3. Your mission. Jesus' mission was to establish the Realm of God or the Kingdom of Heaven here in our lives. (He was, of course, well-established in the next.) Jesus knew that he needed to gather a community of helpers, seekers, builders of this realm.

How do you see yourself responding to Jesus—as an admirer or as an actual follower? Are you doing your best? Going through the motions? Doing what you think is necessary in order to gain favor with God? How have you put your faith into action in parish ministry? In what ways have you resisted the call of Jesus to follow him?

Some Q&A:Q. I'm a little afraid of this journey with Jesus. I know my path isn't even close to that of Jesus. Won't this practice discourage me even more?

A. Hope not! You should already be encouraged, because you've encountered two important themes of your life journey: gift and responsibility. When Jesus says, "Come, follow me," it is always in a spirit of friendship, love and growth. He never uses intimidation and fear.

Perhaps you hesitate because of the responsibility required by this gift. Saying yes to the journey with Jesus calls for actions that aren't easy. But you aren't asked to act alone. Jesus will always send you the help you need

to continue walking with him. Furthermore, you have your G.A. family to support and encourage you.

Q. Is it really possible that my life can be like that of Jesus? This seems like a big stretch to me.

A. But life is about stretching! Lent is a time when we see the human side of Jesus. He was truly tested—and tempted to turn away from the will of God—yet he remained faithful. His example can help you in this "stretch" of Lent.

You are not called to admire Jesus from afar; you are to follow him – to live out His teachings. He did human things well, and you can act as Jesus did in your own life. How? Ask him! Believe me, you will find answers.

Q. (A teen asks) Aren't I a bit young to be looking back already?

A. Are you too young to think about your future? This looking back is to get you ready for that future.

You've changed physically, socially and spiritually in the last year or two. Your relationship with Jesus has changed as well. You need to look at that—often. This can be an affirming look, but you might be called to make changes in your attitudes and behavior.

If you wait your whole life to look back, you won't have time to change ways in which you are not following Jesus' example.

Lent: Time to Review Your Life

Page 9: March 6

Ashes to AshesIf there ever is a day of the year when you can spot Catholic Christians at a glance, Ash Wednesday is it.

It is the one time when Catholic Christians literally wear their faith on their foreheads. In fact, Masses on Ash Wednesday are generally better attended than Masses on most holy days, except Christmas.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent for Catholic Christians, as well as Christians in other denominations. The ashes we receive on our forehead in the shape of a cross serve as an outward sign of our sinfulness and need for penance. The ashes also symbolize our mortality, a reminder that one day we will die and our bodies will return to dust. Hence the traditional words,

“Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return.”The tradition of receiving ashes has its origins in the Old Testament, where sinners performed acts of public penance.

It was Pope Urban II who in the 11th century recommended that all Catholics take part in the practice of receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday. In the 12th century it became customary that the ashes used on Ash Wednesday were made by burning the previous year’s palm branches.

Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting and abstinence for Catholic Christians. According to Church tradition, Catholics older than the age of 14 are supposed to abstain from meat. In addition, those between the ages of 18 and 59, not including pregnant or nursing mothers, should eat only one full meal. Smaller amounts of food (not as much as a full meal) may be eaten in the morning and either at lunchtime or dinner, depending on when you eat your full meal.

More Than Rules

Many older Catholic Christians remember Lent seeming to be always about rules, rules and more rules. “What’s so spiritual about following a bunch of rules?” many my age often wondered.

The truth is Lent is about much more than rules. How many times in your life have you thought, If only I could change things/do things differently? Well, that’s where Lent can help. Ash Wednesday serves as our wake-up call at the beginning of Lent. It is a time to identify the things we have done wrong or wish we could change or do differently. Then we can choose to do something about them during the next 40 days of Lent.

And what about those rules such as abstinence and fasting? Those serve as gentle reminders to stay the course.

Lent is a journey, beginning on Ash Wednesday. Here are some ideas to help you and your family along the way:

• Try to attend Ash Wednesday services together as a family. Most parishes offer evening Masses to help accommodate working parents and busy families, including ours: Wednesday March 9, 8 am, 9:20 am, 1 pm (at Holy Family High School), 6:30 pm, 7:30 pm (in Spanish).

• Attend a penance service. Going to confession provides a wonderful opportunity for a fresh start spiritually. Plus, if your kids see you partaking in the sacrament, they’ll be more likely to go themselves. Confessions for our faith formation students: Wed. March 23, 6:30 to 7:30pm. Confessions for our G.A. School students: Thursday, March 24, 1 to 2:30 pm. Our increasingly popular Taizé Communal Penance Service (with amazing chant and individual confessions) is Wednesday, April 6, 6:30 to 8pm.

• Focus on the meaning behind your fasting and abstinence. For instance, if having a particular food like lobster or shrimp is a special treat for your family, the point of why you are abstaining from meat is probably lost. Try to find another meatless alternative for dinner.

• Since Ash Wednesday is a reminder of the need for spiritual renewal and change in our lives, take some time to review your life and name those areas where you need renewal. Once you have identified these areas, identify ways to make a change.
