TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — One’s speech shows the bent of one’s mind. Praise no one before he or she speaks (Sirach 27:4-7). Psalm — Lord, it is good to give thanks to you (Psalm 92). Second Reading — We are given victory over death through Jesus. In the Lord our labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:54-59). Gospel — A good person produces good, an evil person produces evil. The mouth speaks from the goodness of the heart (Luke 6:39-45).

Question of the Week:

Fr. Gerard’s Corner Over the last few weeks we have heard Jesus begin to teach his disciples—and us—how to see the world through God’s eyes. Two weeks ago we heard Jesus tell us that the poor and hungry would be rewarded and that woe would come to those who are rich and satisfied. Last week Jesus told us to love our enemies and to turn the other cheek. Today he tells us to remove the wooden beam from our judging eyes. This is a challenging worldview, for it flies in the face of how most people view the world. But it matches how God has acted throughout human history. Repeatedly, God has shown mercy to the sinner, blessed the needy, and forgiven the enemy. Jesus calls us to do the same.

Sirach and Luke each point out the importance of integrity and the danger of hypocrisy. What we say and what we do must be sincere. Otherwise, our words are those of a hypocrite: Do as I say, not as I do. People will ignore what we say if our words are empty.

How are we known? Sure, we’re known by our role in our family, by our occupation, and by our age or generation, but how are we known as a person? Jesus tells his disciples, “Every tree is known by its own fruit” (Luke 6:44). Do we bear good fruit or rotten fruit? Do we bear any fruit at all? At the end of the day, at the end of the week, what have we done that has affected someone else? What are we doing for our neighbor? As Christians, at the very least we want to be known as Christian. Fr. Gerard

J.S. Paluch Co., Inc.

In what ways do I speak or act without integrity? What must I say or do at home or in my community to bear good fruit? Can I make a commitment to doing something fruitful throughout Lent?

To love God, proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, and serve all God's people.

P. Gerard Paluch

¿Cómo he hablado o actuado sin integridad?

Mission Statement: To love God, proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, and serve all God's people.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as

well as formation to ministry in the training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
