NORTH JERSEY HIGH SCHOOLS HACKENSACK, NJ – The favorites in each of the four groups all won

although Group I champion North Arlington was hard pressed by

Hasbrouck Heights who fell twenty-five pins short. The Aviators’ second

place finish and a trip to the State Finals next Friday was a mild surprise

since a strong Becton team, expected to finish a close second to North

Arlington, fell behind after game one and was unable to pick up ground

on the leaders.

In Group II, Lyndhurst rode a tournament best 1071 second game to

coast to the title, easily outscoring runner-up Mahwah who held second

from start to finish. With the North’s best squad Indian Hills moving into

Group IV, it opened the door for a strong Paramus quintet, whose lead

after an opening 952 was never challenged. Pascack Valley punched its

ticket for the state tournament at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick by

holding off fast-finishing Garfield to take second spot by fifty-two pins.

With powerful Indian Hills a lock to take the Group IV crown, it was

simply a matter of competitiveness among four schools [Bergen Catholic,

Northern Highlands, Fair Lawn and Ridgewood] with the Crusaders

emerging as a surprise runner-up to join the Braves at the State Finals.

Considering how talented these student athletes are, it was unusual for

the cut line for the final individual qualifier to be a relatively low 628.

High individual game went to Pascack Valley junior Tom Smith 277;

Queen of Peace player Alex Rodriguez rolled the front eight before leav-

ing a “fast eight” 6-10 which he converted and followed with a double and

final seven count for 275. Third best score went to Ridgefield Park soph-

omore Derek Lewandowski who also struck from the first through frame

eight before leaving a 10-pin which he covered and then closed with a

twenty-pin tenth frame fill for 269.

Team Qualifiers: Group IV – Indian Hills 1063-1051-972: 3086,

Bergen Catholic 985: 2772; Group III – Paramus 1021: 2940, Pascack

Valley 1013: 2764; Group II – Lyndhurst 1071: 2830, Mahwah 935: 2672;

Group I – North Arlington 934: 2735, Hasbrouck Heights 949: 2710.

Individual Qualifiers: Craig Oriente [Indian Hills] 267: 676, Kyle

Schellberg [Dumont] 674, Zach DiPerro [River Dell] 657, John Rispoli

[Ridgewood] 652, Chris Navarro [Bergen Charter] 651, Ryan McGuire

[Indian Hills] 647, Tom Smith [Pascack Valley] 646, Jordan Tse

[Demarest] 635, Nathan Tombo [St Joseph] 628.
