From The Desk of Msgr. Matthew Mitas: REMEMBER THAT MARCH IS THE MONTH OF ST. JOSEPH!

HOLY WEEK

Literally the holiest and most solemn time of the year, Holy Week is, for every Catholic, a time of deep re-flection and renewal. There will be many extra times for Confession this week and many special services, from the remembrance of the Lord’s grand entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to the great celebration of the event that saved us, namely, His Resurrection. Come and join us as the whole Catholic world mourns and rejoices, is edified and purged, and, most of all, is renewed and reinvigorated to achieve the Gospel mandate of converting all nations with the good news: Jesus is Risen! (The schedule for everything that’s happening this week at your parish is in the “Upcoming Events” section below; please refer to it.)

MASS DEMONSTRATION

Tomorrow (Monday, March 26), I will present a thorough and in-depth explanation and teaching on the Mass, which will try to cover everything: its history and origins, the theology of worship (including the purpose and meaning of sacrifice), its biblical origins and expression in the history of the Church, the meaning of the symbols used (from the vestments to the vessels) and even church architecture itself. This is being done mostly for the benefit of our converts, but all are welcome to come and, if you are so moved, to ask questions. It will start at 7:00PM and will take place, of course, in church. (It will probably take an hour and a half or so.)

PILGRIMAGE TO EWTN

As I mentioned here last week, we are now taking reservations for the pilgrimage to the studios and convents of EWTN (the Catholic media outlet) in Alabama. The cost is $300 per person for a 4-day, 3-night excursion by bus. Everything is included except meals and any shopping you may wish to do. Besides EWTN, we will al-so visit the convent of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia in Nashville to visit their beautiful and historic Civil War-era motherhouse on the way back. We can only take 55 people so hurry and get your money in to the par-ish offices (checks are payable to St. Angela Merici). There’s only room for 55, so even though they’re wel-come, non-parishioners will only be accepted if we don’t have enough of our own going.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Extra Confession times: Mar. 26 (Mon) 8:30-9:00AM, Mar. 27 (Tue) Noon-1:00PM, Mar. 28 (Wed) 8:30-9:00AM & 6:30-7:30PM March 28 & 30: Exercise class for seniors in our gym. It will be shown in our lunchroom at 3:00PM and will be free for all. March 26: (Monday) Confessions, 8:30-9:00AM and Demonstration of Holy Mass in church, 7:00PM. I will cover every aspect of the ritual of the Mass, from the vestments to its prayers, structure, and history (it’s mostly for our converts, but all are welcome to attend and ask questions). March 27: (Tuesday) Confessions, Noon-1:00PM March 28: (Wednesday) Confessions, 8:30-9:00AM and 6:30-7:30PM March 29 (Maundy Thursday): Morning Prayer, 8:00AM, Mass of the Lord’s Supper, 7:00PM followed by adoration at the Tabernacle of Repose until midnight March 30 (Good Friday): Morning Prayer, 8:00AM, Stations of the Cross, 3:00PM, Good Friday Service, 7:00PM March 31 (Holy Saturday): Morning Prayer, 8:00AM, Paschal Vigil, 8:00PM April 1(Easter Sunday): Usual Mass schedule, viz., 7:30, 9:30 & 11:30AM Week of May 21: Pilgrimage to the EWTN Network complex in Alabama.

QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC

Today (Palm Sunday) we’re showing once again Mel Gibson’s masterpiece, The Passion of the Christ in our lunchroom. There have been many movies which were either specifically made about the Passion and Res-urrection or featured it in some prominent way. Test your knowledge of Hollywood’s dabbling with Christianity by naming the following films:

1. This 1953 film is about the Roman soldier who won the dice game for Jesus’ Tunic. 2. Max von Sydow portrayed Jesus in this 1965 Cinerama movie on the Savior’s life. 3. Jeffrey Hunter portrayed the Redeemer in this 1961 film on Jesus’ life. 4. This movie won 11 Oscars in 1959 and features the greatest action scene ever (chariots!). 5. Anthony Quinn stars in this 1961 film about the man the crowd preferred to Jesus. 6. This 1951 film stars Robert Taylor as a Roman who loves a Christian woman in Nero’s time (and includes the last days of St. Peter). 7. This 1978 TV mini-series features a star-studded cast with Robert Powell as Jesus. 8. This 1964 film, made by a Communist, was a bizarre re-telling of St. Matthew’s Gospel. 9. This was the 1973 film version of the classic “rock opera” on the Passion of Christ. 10. This 2016 film speculates about a Roman soldier’s mission to find Jesus’ dead Body.

ANSWERS: 1. The Robe 2. The Greatest Story Ever Told 3. King of Kings 4. Ben Hur 5. Barabbas 6. Quo Vadis 7. Jesus of Nazareth 8. The Gospel According to St. Matthew 9. Jesus Christ Superstar 10. Ris-en

(Ed. note: Of the ten films listed above, even the ones that aren’t complete garbage cinematically are pretty poor theologically. This is hardly surprising since most were made by Jews or atheists [or Jewish atheists] or others who do not actually believe in Christ. Generally speaking, when Hollywood makes a movie about reli-gion, stay home and save your money.)

QUOTES OF THE WEEK

“We all agree on the need to better secure the border, and to punish employers who choose to hire ille-gal aliens.” – Sen. Barack Obama, 2005

“We will try to speed the deportation of illegal aliens who are arrested for crimes, to better identify illegal aliens in the workplace.” – President Bill Clinton, 1995

“If U.S. immigration policy is to serve this nation’s interests, it must be enforced effectively. This nation has a responsibility to its people – citizens and resident aliens – and failure to enforce immigration law means not living up to that responsibility.” – Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, CSC, 1981 Ed. note: Things change!
