Love Test by Geraldine Davis HookerAre your ready for love and an everlasting relationship? Before you dive headfirst into shallow water and break your neck, test yourself first to see if you're REALLY prepared. Satan steals love more than any other one thing, so be sure your relationship is secured in God's love before a commitment is made. It is humanly impossible to fall in

love! We fall in love with the eruption of our emotions, but not with the other person, which is not the true essence of love. Falling for this mockery takes us on a roller coaster ride that has an abrupt and painful ending, which is a very foolish undertaking. When we are delivered into the hands of emotional discord, love is removed in exchange for fear, distrust, unfaithfulness and regret; and we are left to dwell in the earthshaking tempest of our deluge. Infatuation is indeed and electrifying feeling, but it cannot endure the pressures of the world for any length of time. For its merely an emotion and emotions are not reality, because they quickly change. Impetuously, they take us to the highs

of exhilaration, then drop us to the lowest of lows of depression. This emotional, inflaming state of infatuation will change from excitement, hope, happiness and perceived love, to fear, anger and grief. It will leave you confused, bitter and defeated. Love is not an emotion, its a commitment! If you are determined to make a lifelong commitment and cast down everything that interferes, then perhaps you are ready to walk through the doors of love. Until then, save yourself the agony of defeat. Taking responsibility for the course of action that love demands of us, only then is love able to grow. And the longer a commitment is preserved, the stronger and more enduring the bond becomes. Commitment locks and secures our relationships together, so love cannot fail or resist. It locks out everything that would prevent love from rooting and growing, which provides security, trust and loving affection. If you're not absolutely sure, stand still! Don't jump into anything suddenly or rashly. Move slowly, at a gradual pace, or you may find yourself buried in a lifetime of agony and defeat. Therefore I urge you to walk slowly in your search for love and let God walk beside you. For He said, "I (the Lord) will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go: I will counsel you with My eyes upon you." (Psalm 32:8)

A Word from the PublisherThe Least Amongst Us

By William Bill BlairElite News Founder

I have lived nearly an entire century. I have witnessed the administrations of more than 15 Presidents of the United States. I have witnessed a period when it was illegal for a person of color to attend the Texas State Fair on certain days, or attend any of our major white educational institutions in the state of Texas. Some do not know it but I did not intend to become a newspaper publisher after a career as a professional baseball player. It was only when those who ran the newspapers in Dallas told me that they would not publish news about people of color that I decided to start the Elite Newspaper. Starting the newspaper was not without difficulty. Like major publishers, I did not have any money, but what I did have was an eternal drive, the direction of God and the support of members of the Clergy who believed in me, prayed for me and asked their congregations to pray for my effort and to support the paper. It was a humble beginning. There were times when I sat at my kitchen table, putting together the pages of the Elite Newspaper while my children tugged on my legs and pulled at my shoulders. Then, they had no idea that I was building a future for them and for the people of Dallas who were in need of a newspaper that gave them news about issues that impacted their lives and the lives of their children. In the very beginning, I delivered all of the newspapers alone. There was no one else to help me. My children were too small to help me with the delivery of the paper, and there were times when I thought that perhaps I had made a bad decision. But I continued to pray, and the preachers continued to pray and the Elite News grew. I always believed that the paper should serve the needs of the people, especially those who were considered to be among the least of these. I never dreamed of getting wealthy as a newspaper publisher. I knew that I had a responsibility to provide for a family and to give my children an opportunity to receive quality educations; The Elite Newspaper allowed me to do that. And while as the founder and first publisher of the Elite News, I have been in the company of presidents, principals and potentates, I have never forgotten the least of these; people without money, people without influence, people without higher education and people without hope. Thinking of them, treating them with dignity and giving them a voice has been at the very foundation of this newspaper. Without them, the Elite News would not be where it is today.

    The cities of D a l l a s a n d F o r t Wo r t h c o n t i n u e t o grow. They, and the various small-er cities that surround them, make up one of the fastest

growing areas in the country. Census statistics clearly demon-strate that increasing number of people are migrating to the metroplex. They come here for employment and for the warmth that is a part of the make-up of the people who live here. Also, some of the nations largest businesses are located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, many of them having moved here in the last 10 years. It is very important to me, as the publisher of the Elite Newspaper, that businesses that have recently moved to this area, and those who have made Dallas their home for many decades, utilize the skills and business services of minority owned businesses that Often, when it comes to getting contracts, minority business owners are not allowed to participate and too often are left out in the cold. A major focus of this newspaper w i l l b e e x p o s i n g m i n o r i t y businesses to majority owned

companies and encourag ing majority owned companies to utilize the goods, services and t a l e n t s o f m i n o r i t y o w n e d b u s i n e s s e s t h a t a r e o f t e n overlooked. One of the other major objectives of these pages will be to expose minority owned businesses to our readership, informing them of their abilities and their accomplishments, and their willingness to be provide services. There is no reason that the Dallas/Fort Worth area should experience a business explosion while minority and female owned businesses are not able to survive or struggle just to keep the doors open. Dallas is a good city, but we want it to become a great city, and we believe that it will become a great city when all of its businesses owners have the opportunity to do well. That is not the case now but it can happen and the Elite News intends to play a pivotal role in making it a reality. When my father started this paper he had a dream that it would one day become a significant voice in this community. His dream has come true. It is now incumbent on me, my brothers and my sisters to continue that dream. It is something that we are committed to. We do not intend to disappoint those who believe in the promise.

This past Sunday we deviated from the standard church school lesson to take the time to teach some and remind others of w h a t w e a s members of the National Primitive Baptist denomin-

ation believe and teach. We felt it is necessary In light of the fact that there are many churches that describe themselves as ministries instead of churches who have no ties to anyone but themselves and sometimes you cant be sure of what they believe or teach we are taking the time not to question what others teach but to inform

every member of our congregation so that they might know and understand what we believe and teach as biblical doctrine as a church and denomination. Our youth minister Evangelist Vickie Johnson spoke to our youth encouraging them to avoid bad influence. The morning message was delivered by Pastor L.T. Morgan his subject was Dont lose sight of the prize 2Tim.4:6-8. Paul in what was probably his last letter tells Timothy that he was ready to be offered, to pour out his life as a drink offering to the Lord but he took consolation in the fact that he had fought a good fight, he had finished his course, he had kept the faith, but there was something beckoning him, encouraging him, comforting him even

at that hour, he knew that there was a crown of righteousness awaiting him. Paul always kept in mind that there was a greater reward for believers in the life to come than this world could ever offer. Some have traded the eternal rewards for temporary things, houses, money, fame and we leave all these things behind when we leave this world. Many seem to be seeking the hand of God but not the face of God. Everyone want the blessings of this present world at the risk of losing the crown of life that Jesus promised to those that overcome the allure of this present world.

    Be Blessed!

    Prayer Closet

Prayer is a powerful weapon that we use to combat against the tricks of the devil. It is an invisible weapon that accomplishes many things both natural and spiritual. James, the brother of Jesus tells us to pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. The fervent prayer is the prayer that is energized by the Holy Spirit. Read James 5:13 16 and there we will find a command to pray.

    Dear Dr. Hollie,

Its been 10 years since I lost my niece to Leukemia. She was 12. When she got sick I became very emotional about it. I was living in a different state from her. When she would call me, my voice was lost and Id just pass the phone and leave. This went on for a few months and eventually got to the point where I could at least say hi to her over the phone. But thats about as far as those conversations would go before I had to go. Eventually her mom moved here to Texas. My niece told me that she felt that I was ashamed of her because I wouldnt talk to her anymore. I explained it to her the best I could, but I was filled with so much guilt. However, while she was here and I could see her all the time, I was able to cope with it. I know that sounds selfish because I shouldve sucked it up for her sake from the beginning, but Im just telling you how it happened. While she was here, I took her to appointments to get transfusions and chemotherapy. For a few months, she was doing really well and things felt normal. All of a sudden things went really bad. She got really sick. She couldnt hold any food and was always in pain. Her mother decided to move back home, and my niece asked me if she could stay here with me. I had to tell her no because I was so scared. They moved back home and she died about three months later. Im still feeling all that pain and I dont know why. This is the best I can explain it in such a short letter, but maybe there is still something you can tell me that will help me get through birthdays and deathdays without so much sadness.

    Grieving Too Long

    Dear Grieving,

Professionally, as a psychotherapist, we always suggest that anyone who grieves excessively more than three months should see someone. By excessive grief, I mean that it interferes with your daily activity and causes you constant worry and anxiety. It sounds like all of this is happening with you. So, I urge you to hurriedly get some assistance so that you can return to a more purposed and focused life, free of guilt and pain.

Dr. Hollie is a Pastor and practicing psychotherapist in the city. For questions and comments, please write to [email protected].

GREGGS SPOTLIGHT ! !Soul-stirring Gospel Musical"When you think about an ole fashion gospel musical, you think about toe-tapping, hand-clapping. You think about string guitars, violins and drums to name a few that will make you stand to your feet. You think about the deep voice

vocalist, and then the sweet soft voice of one of the singers. With that all blended together, you will get a gospel good time. While taking nothing from contemporary music, the preaching of Gods word to invite souls to Christ and reviving believers in their faith, there is nothing more exciting to our souls and spirits, than a good ole fashion, down-home, toe-tapping, hand clapping, standing on your feet Gospel Musical. Well on Saturday, March 24th, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. The New Cliff Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1704 Overton Rd, Dallas, Texas, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the leadership of Pastor Brown, cordially invite you to this type of musical, featuring the one and only Soul Searchers.! As David said in Psalm 100:4, Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. When you enter into the house of God, with thanksgivings and praise for the marvelous works He have done in your life, you can expect souls to saved, blessing to flow, lives changed and spirits renewed. Back in the day, before we became believers in Christ, we would go to concerts and do as we use to say jam the night away. When it was over, we look for some place to eat, before we journey home, we will be feeling good from the music played that night, and we will be full from the food afterward. Well you can expect the same from this Soul-stirring Gospel Musical! You wont have to leave the parking lot, looking for a place to dine, just go to the fellowship hall, where they will be cooking Southern Fried Catfish with all the trimming. So COME ONE! COME ALL, and get your souls revived, with some Soul-Stirring Gospel Music, for When Praises go up, Blessing comes down! See you there! GREGG A. SMITH

I was out in Ennis, Texas this weekend when I noticed a guys shirt that read "Speed Kills." I laughed and thought to myself how amazing it is to see someone that has what we called in my era God Given Speed! Don't get me wrong, any athlete can become a more competitive runner. Any athlete can learn proper running form, this will allow them to move faster from point A to point B. An athlete can also do specialized drills and lift weights to help them to run faster than before! Proper training can help an athlete develop the ability to run faster. But I'm talking about SPEED!! I'm talking about that kind of speed that makes you stand to your feet, the type of speed that makes you look at your stop watch. I'm talking God Given ability! About a week ago I was at the Meet of Champions in Lancaster. This meet was absolutely great! It was a sunny day, there was a slight wind, and the stands were full with track fans young and old. The stage was set for records to be broken. It was just something in

the air that day! Dallas -Fort Worth met my talents of the week- The Desoto Eagle- BONAFIDE- I have been around track and field for a long time. I have seen, heard, and read about some of the fastest relay teams to ever participate in track and field! I heard about the great Lincoln team w i t h t h e P o u n c e y Brothers. These young men ran the 440 relay in a time of 40.2. I saw the Roosevelt teams featuring Roy"Robot" Martin. Their team ran the 400 meter relay in 40.2 seconds. But in 1998 the team of Milton Wesley, Monte Clopton, Micheal Franklin, and DeMario Wesley ran the 400 meter relay in a time of 39.76. (national record). This team also combined to run the 4x200 meter relay in a time of 1:23.31 (national record).-God Given Speed- This years Eagle's team is one of the most impressive relay teams I've seen in a long time.

The team of Bryson Echols, Deontre Wilson, Tremain Acy, and Ridge Jones ran the 400 meter relay in a time of 40.77 at the Lancaster meet. This is the best time in the nation this year and shows that the Eagles are going to push the stop watch this season!

The team is not just impressive because they have four great sprinters, this team is very fluid with getting the baton around. Allow me to explain; you can have four very fast sprinters, and you can have 4 fast sprinters. The team with the best handoff will win that race 9 out of 10 times! The Eagles relay teams just happen to have good baton work and 4 very fast sprinters. The team has a very strong scratch leg in Echols, Wilson on the 2nd leg is second to none, but the strong point of the relay is Acy. Acy is the hands down best 3rd leg in the nation. And when you add Ridge Jones to the mix these youngsters are on the brink of

Elite News sent its sports staff to Houston to cover the TSU relays. This is the first big outdoor meet, and they hit the track running extremely well. Gone are the days of the dominate African American Schools. The Texas Southern Flying Tigers, the Ray Sadlers, Wesley Blackmons, Charles Whites, Homer Jones, Charlie Frazier, Robert Taylors etc. Ive already omitted some great track athletes that I didnt want to, such as the great Olympian James Hines. Gone are the days of the epic duels Prairie View, Southern, Grambling. Those battles are not as prominent as in the past, but the competition at the relays are just as fierce.

High Schools dominate the competition now, not only at Texas Southern. They dominate the Texas Relays in Austin as well as most other places. The Professional runners dodge each other like the plague. I dont believe you will see Tyson Gay run Usain Bolt, until the Olympics. Its an even greater chance that you will never see them run each other again. In the event that they somehow line up you wont see a winner the loser will pull up, and pretend to be hurt. Thus the emergence of the High School competition. And believe me it is outstanding. Aside from a little

Dallas attorney Bryan Pope has announced that Larry Taylor joined the Dallas office of The Cochran Firm, the national legal practice launched by renowned attorney Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. "We are excited that Larry joined our firm," said Pope, managing partner in the Dallas office. "Young, energetic lawyers who are well-connected to the communities we serve are critical to the service we provide. Larry will be a tremendous boost to our team as we continue to build our foundation in North Texas." One of 23 regional offices, the Dallas office was the last one selected by and opened before the legendary Cochran passed away in 2005. A personal injury and criminal defense law firm, the Dallas office is committed to Cochran's vision of "representing common people, whether a serious injury wrongfully imposed or a tragic human death, we remain dedicated to full justice for all our clients." "I am honored to have met Mr. Cochran, and I am committed to the legacy he charged us with in his

passing," said Pope. "His desire to insure that justice and the rights guaranteed in the Seventh Amendment are available to everyone guides us each day. His determination to serve the communities we work in is the cornerstone of our work." Taylor says that commitment is what made the opportunity to join the Dallas office attractive. "When I met Bryan and many of the regional partners at the firm, I knew I was in the right place, said Taylor. The dedication to service is fundamental to the fabric of the firm regardless of whether the office is in Florida, New York, or California." The Cochran Firm is a perfect fit given my background of community service. My involvement in youth sports, ex-offender networks and mentoring is as important to the legacy of the firm as it is to me," Taylor added. "That commitment is alive and well in the Cochran offices across America." Taylor previously served as an Assistant District Attorney for Dallas

County District Attorney Craig Watkins, and in that capacity he worked hard every day to ensure that the community is a safe place to raise a family. Prior to that, he served as Director of Outreach for U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson's 30th Congressional District. In that role he worked to build stronger communities, assisted citizens in the District with obtaining state and federal resources , and worked toward economic development. His efforts were so profound in the area of economic empowerment that in 2009 the Dallas office of Texas Workforce Commission (Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas) recognized him for his outstanding efforts in job creation. As a Cochran Firm attorney, Taylor is dedicated to the continued work of Johnny Cochran and the protection of civil rights and liberty. Taylor also volunteered in 2008 through the National Bar Association, and in 2010 through the Clay Jenkins for Dallas County Judge Campaign as a

voter protection lawyer, helping ensure that every eligible person voted, and that their vote counted. In his free time, Taylor volunteers as a coach to youth sports teams. He also works to provide opportunity and direction for the recently incarcerated; healthcare for the underserved African American and Hispanic population through involvement with the Martin Luther King Family Clinic and Los Barrios Unidos Community Clinic (where he serves as the first African-American board member). Taylor is a graduate of Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University, where he served as a member of the Board of Regents. Larry earned his Bachelor's Degree from Texas A&M University. Taylor attends church at the "Exciting" Ervay Cedar Baptist Church in Dallas . He is a devoted husband and father to his wife (of more than 14 years) and three children.

Toliver, continued from page 7something season, but the Eagles still finished 2nd. DeSoto more than made up for it winning the 4x200 meter relay in a time of 1:24 tops in the nation, and the Eagles also won the 1600 meter relay in a time of 3:15. The Eagles won both events by

at least 15 meters. This team is on track to take 3 relay teams to the state meet, with a possibility of scoring 60 points. Kalib Pryor, Will Stovall, Tony Cooks, Ladrius Jones have formed a strong foundation of good coaching,

    good technique and more than that, t h e y a l l h a v e - G o d G i v e n Speed!!! Good luck Eagles! May God bless you and Help us change the World!!!

Sun burn, I saw as great a meet as Ive seen in a longtime. The meet is beginning to take on an I 45 rivalry -- A Houston verses Dallas type thing. This was a great year for Dallas area Schools. Led by The DeSoto Eagles, Lancaster Tigers in the boys division and the Lancaster Girls in the Girls division. In the recent years you can get a pretty good idea who would eventually win

the State Championship by what happens at TSU. The three major relay 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, DeSoto Boys won two of the three in National best times. Desoto Girls didnt go. Lancaster seems to be heavy favorites in the 4a category at the State meet. Lancaster should be as dominant in 4a as DeSoto in 5a. The meet was not a runaway so these are my predictions this is not

a documentary. Houston area has the two time defending State 5a champion Glena Park North shore. And they are undefeated in the 4x100 over the last two years. If at all possibly go to Austin for the S t a t e T r a c k a n d f i e l d Championship, if you want to see a state champion. I guarantee you wont see one in football . Basketball yes (Kimball Knights).

By Joseph Green-BishopThe Elite News Staff When Shannan Wilkerson-Brown was a small girl she spent her summers with her grandparents, Willie Mae and Dave, on their farm in East Texas. Raised by a single parent, she enjoyed her childhood and looked forward to endless days of running through fields planted with corn, potatoes, sweet peas and watermelon. Today, Shannan, a graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans, finds herself reaching out to children, helping them to shape their lives and traverse any difficulties that confront them. Last year she started a childrens charity, Kidscapefoundation.org, which has provided children with new life skills through summer camps and workshops during the time that it has been in existence. She has opened the eyes of children to the worlds of

photograph, painting, sculpture, music and dance. Now the foundation is focusing its attention on an online tutoring program for young students that will tutor them in math and science. The program will be ongoing throughout the school year, said Shannan, who grew up in the Concord Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas. There are many children whose parents are working many hours each week just to make ends meet, and they do not have the funds to provide tutoring for their children, Shannan said. We plan to assist those parents and their children with our program that will help them with the homework and assist them in fields that are very important to their futures. The online tutorials will be taught by high school honor students who will reserve community service credits. We intend to launch the program this

summer. It is something that is greatly needed in communities throughout our region. The Kidscapes Foundation is also looking for volunteers that can assist it in programs that benefit at-risk

children. It is also looking for donors who will help support the various programs that the foundation sponsors for children, including those t h a t f o c u s o n h e a l t h , nutrition, education and art. I have always wanted to touch the lives of children, said Shannan, whose mother, Marvelin, was a single parent. We work with children who are homeless and with those who are infected with incurable diseases. The work that we do is something that must be done. I have always wanted

to build something and to do something that will make the world better for everyone, said Shannan, who started her foundation with $500.00 from her savings.

Shannan Wilkerson-Brown has a passion for children. Her foundation is preparing them for bright futures, just as her mother and her grandparents prepared her.
