DPWH-1st LED conducts repair of bridges in Tanauan & Babatngon, Leyte

Retrofitting, rehabilitation, and strengthening of two bridges

in Tanauan and one in Babatngon, Leyte are currently being conducted by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) – Leyte First Engineering District (1st LED). District Engr. Angel A. Sia, Jr. informed that in Tanauan, Leyte the weakening of Kiling bridge along the Tanauan-Dagami Road is being reinforced and strengthened with funds taken from the General

Appropriations Act (GAA) CY 2014. Said project, according to Engr. Sia is under contract with SILK and STEEL Construction with a contract cost of P5,000,000.00 and is no 43.33% accomplished. The other bridge repair project still in said town is the Limbuhan Bridge along Daang Maharlike Road Section which is funded under the GAA CY 2014. With a contract cost of P8,000,000.00 under the Square Cube Construction,

the project is 43.33% accomplished. And lastly, the third bridge currently being repaired, according to Sia, is th Bagahupi Bridge along Leyte – Samar Inter-Provincial Raod at Babatngon, Leyte. With a contract cost of P5,000,000.00, the bridge is 43.33% accomplished and is under contract with the Lug Konstract. (PIA-8)

and welfare of the students and the youth, Naval State University (NSU) thru its Supreme Student Council and The Pillar Publication hosted the first-ever Provincial Student Leaders Congress (PSLC), a general assembly of all student leaders in the province on March 15-16, 2014 at the NSU gymnasium, Naval, Biliran. Approximately 200 student and youth leaders coming from the different registered student organizations in the university, religious organizations, community-based organizations, fraternities, student councils from secondary high schools and student publications, converged in the said congress. With the theme,

“Empowering and Equipping Student Leaders towards Good Governance”, the congress was highlighted with leadership training and workshops, fora and discussions on current issues, parallel competitions like elocution, essay writing and poster making and the plenary session. Gracing the event were Ms. Sarah Jane I. Elago, National President of National Union of Students of the Philippines as the Keynote Speaker; Hon. Rogelio J. Espina, Representative, Lone District of Biliran and Hon. Gerard Roger Espina, Provincial Board Member. The congress likewise provided the participants in-depth analysis of current societal issues and builds up strong foundation that would help and prepare them in

NSU hosts 1st Provincial Student Leaders Congressputting their idealism into reality. With the congress, student leaders were encouraged to get involve in the process of protecting the basic human rights and setting a roadmap for the province and the nation, guided with the skills and values formation needed to produce empowered, God-fearing, law-abiding leaders who have voice in society. During the two-day PSLC, the Biliran Young Talented and Empowered Sector (BYTES), a province-wide network of student leaders who envision of becoming proactive and accountable to the nation’s future, was launched. Philippine Army based in Camp Sumoroy, Catarman, Northern Samar spearheads the 1st Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Dril l in coordination with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Unit and the Philippine Information Agency on March 19, 2014 at 9:00AM. Speaking before almost a hundred members of the Philippine Army, Deputy Brigade Commander Col. Mario Lacurom asserted the need of being prepared as anyone can be a potential victim of any disasters. “ We cannot fight disasters, we do not know when it will come but definitely it will come.” Lacurom stressed. Before the actual dril l , a lecture on Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Climate Change Adaptation was presented by PDRRMO Mr. Amancio Unay, Jr. who also facil itated and coached the actual dril l . Unay informed that the PDRRMU of the province continue to pursue its information campaign and conducts forum down to the local government units, schools and other sectors of the community presenting to them the hazard maps specifically on typhoon, earthquake, f loods, tsunami and the l ike of which the area is vulnerable of. PDRRMC identified

priorities of action which covers governance, r isk identification, knowledge management, reducing the underlying risk factors and strengthening disaster preparedness for effective response, Unay said.

8 ID troops encounters NPA three times, and seizes one NPA camp in Samar

T roops of the 8th Infantry Division, Phil ippine Army, under

87th Infantry Battalion recently seized one New People’s Army (NPA) camp in Motiong, Samar. 87th IB Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Antonio Dolnuan based at Barangay Polangi, Calbiga, Samar reported that recently, his troops encountered NPA two times in Motiong, Samar that resulted to seized one NPA camp that has eleven makeshift bunkers, one multi- purpose hall, one k itchen, three guard house and the recovery of three magazines with ammunition for M16 Armalite r if le. According to Dolnuan, the

first encounter was occurred at Barangay Inalad, Motiong, Samar in the morning of March 13, 2014. They encountered thir ty NPA rebels for 45 minutes until rebels withdrew. The second encounter transpired when pursuing troops caught up with fleeing NPA rebels at 9:30 in the morning of the same day near Barangay Candumacol of the same town, 2.3 k ilometers away from the site of the first encounter. Meanwhile, 63rd Infantry Battalion Lt. Col. Jun Calambuhay reported that on the same day, his troops also encountered ten NPA rebels at Barangay Carolina,

Matuguinao, Samar that resulted to the wounding of the right foot of one soldier.8th ID Commanding General Jet Velarmino lauded his men for preventing the planned crimes and violence against the community by the NPA operating in Samar. Velarmino assures that the people of Eastern Visayas, together with the troops under his command, will continue their sworn duty to defend their people against the enemy even to the extent of losing l imb and life when necessary.
