GENERAL MANAGER'S NOTE
Friends,It is a remarkable time for women in American history! In January, we saw Kamala Harris sworn in as the first female vice president of the United States. This is amazing to those of us who remember when Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman to run as Vice President on a major party ticket in 1984. Beautiful echoes. We also heard National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman deliver her poem, “The Hill We Climb,” at the inauguration last month, earning international acclaim. Listening to Gorman, we can hear an echo of the great Maya Angelou who spoke at the 1993 presidential inauguration. And before all of these women, Marian Anderson sang for the American people in an open-air concert outside the Lin-coln Memorial. It was 1939, an era of racial segregation, and she was banned from performing in Constitution Hall because of her race. With the aid of first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, she sang before an integrated crowd of more than 75,000 people and a radio audience in the millions. Her performance was hailed by maestros in Europe as a voice that “comes around once in a hundred years.” She went on to sing at President Kennedy’s inauguration in 1961. Brave women, daring to walk through doors that were opened by those who went before them, raising their voices to inspire future generations. It’s important that we remember the struggles as well as the victories that women have endured along the long road to recognition, equality, and success. That’s where KBTC can help.
This month, KBTC is presenting programs that recognize and celebrate the vital role women have played in history, including American Experience: Voice of Freedom (March 18 at 6pm), which tells the story of Marian Anderson’s life leading up to that historic concert. I hope you and your family find the Women’s History Month programs on KBTC to be insightful and inspirational!
