March Birthdays

Best Wishes For A Wonderful Milestone!

Ladies and gentleman, dear residents, it has been a year since the Coronavirus “officially” began devastating the world. Since that time, we all have endured a lot, with many lives lost and even more lives destroyed and devastated by the COVID side-effects. We’ve seen businesses that have closed, life savings consumed and tragically, for many, hope has been a word long forgotten. It is very easy to look at all that we’ve lost, to look at the pain and the suffering. It is very easy to despair.

This month, we’re going to focus on the positive. We’re going to focus on all the things that we have gained. This is a positive message. This is a message of hope.

The shutdown has made our world much smaller. I’ve spent more time with you than I have with my own family. I got to know so many of you so well. I got a chance to learn your stories. We’ve struggled together, endured together, sacrificed together, got vaccinated together and survived together. We may have different last

names, but I feel like I gained a huge family. I look at you as my new brothers and sisters.

If something good came out of this virus, it was the new formed unity, the comradery. We watched out for one another, found ways to respect the needs of one another and we sacrificed for one another. In a world turning a little more evil with each passing day, we found compassion and our humanity.

This may not be the one-year anniversary that any of us wanted, but it is the one-year anniversary that we should view with pride. We survived. And most importantly, we survived together.

Thank you so much for your understanding, for your cooperation and for your sacrifices. Most of all, thank you for your positive attitude. You continue to make each day worth the fight. Unfortunately, we still have a very long fight ahead of us.

Once again, thank you. —Rocsana Bowers, Executive Director

Celebrate Passover at our Seder Saturday, March 27th • 4:00 / 5:30 p.m. Dining Room In accordance with tradition, we will be hosting our Premier Residences family-style Seder on the first night of Passover, which falls this year on Saturday, March 27th. There will be two dinner seatings that evening. The first seating will be regular open seating with no service at 4:00 p.m. The second seating, at 5:30 p.m., will be the special Seder Service conducted by Rabbi Sharon Steinberg. All are welcome to attend the Seder however we do ask that you sign up with Robert in advance. The management and staff wish all our Jewish residents a very happy Passover. “Chag Pesach Samech.” Passover Programs Saturday, March 27th In celebration of Pesach, join us for a wonderful video presentation of “The Taste of Passover” on Saturday, March 27th at 2:00 p.m. Featuring ancient and contemporary songs such as “Der Bekher,” “Seder Plate Round” and “Chad Gadya,” this cultural extravaganza—recorded at the New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall—celebrates the time-honored Jewish customs of Passover. With venerated Broadway star Theodore Bikel serving as host, the video also features witty observations by humorist Moshe Waldoks and even a fun demonstration of how to make matzo balls. In the evening, after the Passover Seder, watch the award winning, beloved movie musical, Fiddler on the Roof, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium.

March HappeningsMarch Highlights

We Love Zumba! Thursdays • 11:00 a.m. — Lounge Many of our residents enjoy a weekly workout with Zumba Instructor Mercedes. They received a special Valentine gift from her last month—a very handy towel which says, “I Love Zumba” to wipe away the sweat after the class, along with a Valentine lollipop. There’s a lot of love in Mercedes’ class! Here’s an interesting tidbit. Zumba was founded in 1998 by aerobics instructor Pérez in Colombia. One day he forgot to bring his regular music to class, substituting cassette tapes of Latin dance music—Salsa and Merengue—instead. Thus, Zumba was born. The dance, music and exercise combination class became so popular that, in 2001, he released a series of fitness videos sold via infomercial. By 2015, there were 14 million Zumba students in 186 countries. Now, don’t miss the opportunity to participate in Zumba Gold, specially designed for the more mature student. Come check it out every Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the Lounge. Daylight Saving Time A reminder to put your clocks forward one hour on Sunday, March 14th. Have you ever wondered how this started? The idea of daylight saving was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin during his sojourn as an American delegate in Paris in 1784. The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time called "Summer Time" in many places in the world, is to make better use of daylight. We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. Daylight Saving Time also saves energy. It trims the entire country's electricity usage by a significant amount,

The Truth About St. Patrick St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17th—the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is believed that he died on March 17th in the year 461 A.D. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and history. Saint Patrick was born in the Welsh town of Banwen during 385 A.D. At age 16, he was captured and sold into slavery to a sheep farmer in Ireland. He escaped when he was 22 and spent the next 12 years in a monastery. In his 30s, he returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary. After his death he was credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. Patrick was also credited for keeping snakes out of Ireland, however, that’s a myth as there were no snakes in Ireland. There are 34 million Americans who have Irish ancestry, according to the U.S. Census. That’s almost nine times the population of Ireland. May we wish you all a very Happy St Patrick’s Day and hope you find a lucky four leaf clover. Legend says that each leaf of the clover means something: the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love and the fourth for luck. May the luck of the Irish be yours! St. Patrick’s Day Fun & Frolics

Wednesday, March 17th • 1:00 p.m. — Art Studio Come and celebrate St Patty’s Day with the ever-

popular Robert Bornstein. Discover how the tiny Emerald Isle influenced our culture, politics and improved our lives in America. Leave the class with a laminated shamrock that you’ll be as proud as the Irish to say you’ve made!

Valentine Candy Guess Well, the Valentine Candy Count last month was really interesting. The candy had to be recounted and chocolates added to the jar three times because the jar was broken into. The funny part was that the candy robbers actually confessed and said they thought it was strange that the jar was so hard to open! You might get a giggle of out this, too. The guesses ranged from 87 to 2,150. Just goes to prove how people see things differently...even when counting chocolates! The actual number of chocolates in the jar was 355. And the winner who guessed the closest number was Ann Vezos—the same winner as the Super Bowl Squares contest. Apparently she’s very good at guessing! She won a beautiful heart-shaped box of chocolates. Our staff also had a chance to guess, with Human Resources Manager Stacey winning the chocolates in the jar! The Lounge of Love Thanks to everyone who bought Valentine cards last month. We raised $425 for the American Heart Association. You certainly turned our Lounge into a “Lounge of Love” with the display of cards. Staff and residents who received cards were thrilled, as was The American Heart Association to receive your donations.

The Five Star Signature theme for March is “Eye of the Tiger.” March marks the end of hibernation for many animals and the beginning of spring. Discovering your “spirit animal” is a great way to connect to the animal kingdom and the world.

A spirit animal is characterized as a teacher or messenger that comes in the form of an animal and has a personal relationship to an individual. It is believed that you do not choose the animal, rather it chooses, or has already chosen, you. The animal is there to provide “medicine” to the recipient in the form of guidance, lessons, protection, power, or wisdom. So how do we find our spirit animal? It might often come in a dream or even watching TV, where you notice a certain animal more than any other. Our travelogues this month will give you chance to connect with your spirit animal. Join us on Mondays at 3:15 p.m. in the Auditorium when we will be traveling to see a wild variety of animals in their natural habitat. Rhinos, giraffes, elephants, zebra, cheetahs, gazelles, ostriches and lions, to name but a few. And of course, not forgetting the program’s namesake, the tiger! Keep your eye on it! It might be your spirit animal.
