When my wife and I were expecting twins, we could not wait to find out if they were going to be boys, girls, or
one of each. Early in the pregnancy, we decided to undergo some basic genetic testing to screen for possible genetic malformation. All it required was a simple blood test. In addition to identifying possible defects, the test can tell you the sex of the babies-much earlier than a traditional ultrasound. We decided to learn the sexes, and within a few weeks, we found out we were having fraternal boys.
We were suprised that this information came from one simple blood sample. Then I began to wonder what else they could tell about our boys (who were still months away from arriving). Could they find out what color eyes they’d have?
Would they both have the same hair color? Could they tell if either one would be susceptible to heart disease or diabetes as they age?
We had so many questions about our unborn baby boys, and now that they are here, we have some answers—like their eye and hair colors. Some of those other questions remain unanswered, and that’s just part of the mystery of life. I’m hoping that Ken Burns’ newest documentary, “The Gene: An Intimate History” will provide some insight into the future of genetic testing, and how it will undoubtedly change our lives.
Before the release in April, WQPT will be hosting a number of outreach events and screenings before and after its release. From panel discussions to a Charles Darwin Impersonator, there are numerous opportunities for you to learn more about genetics.
For details about these events, and the film, visit our website at wqpt.org.
