From the desk of Mr. Sefcik and Mrs. Peters… Dear Parents and Guardians, Each year time seems to move more quickly. We can hardly believe 3 rd quarter is almost over and that Spring Break is only a few weeks away. Spring Break is March 25-29. School resumes on Monday, April 1, 2019. As mentioned last month, when we return from break, students in grades 3-8 will be participating in the Illinois Readiness Assessment (IRA) April 1-12. The assessments will cover English Language Arts and Math. The IRA assessment, formally known as PARCC, aligns to the Illinois Learning Standards and focuses on critical thinking, concept mastery, and writing skills. There are 3 tests for both English Language Arts and Math and students will have up to 110 minutes to complete each unit, though many will finish in much less time. Students in grades 5 th and 8 th will also be taking the Illinois Science Assessment March 18-22. Friday, March 22 is the last day to order a Stanton yearbook. See page 7 for an order form. Yearbooks are $16.00. March is “Music in Our Schools” month and we could not be more proud of the hard work and dedication our band and choir members put in throughout the year. On Tuesday, March 12, you are invited to a free concert in the Grant Community High School Field House at 7:00pm featuring Stanton’s choir, along with the choir and bands from surrounding schools. Recently, a parent survey was sent home with each child about possible future exploratory classes at Stanton. Please take a minute to complete the survey and return it by March 6. Your feedback is truly appreciated. On Saturday, April 6 at the Navy’s Recruit Training Command Pool at Great Lakes there is an exciting STEM event, the SeaPerch Competition. For more information, see page 13 or contact Ms. Jalove, Stanton’s STEM teacher, at 847- 973-4211. Have a safe and relaxing spring break! Thank you for being a part of ours!

Two officers from the Fox Lake Police Department toured our school and visited the 5th grade

STEM class. We value our partnership with the FLPD and thank them for being wonderful role

models for our students and for helping to keep our learning environment safe.

The NJHS hosted a Super

Smash Brothers Tournament

during lunch to raise money to

help fight pediatric cancer.

The competition was fierce!

PBIS Fridays always add excitement to the end of the week. Pictured above

Fifth Grade Go online today SecondStep.org

Activation Key: CPU5 FAMI LYG5

Dear 5th Grade Families,

As you know, we are using the Second Step program in

your child’s class. The Second Step program teaches

children important skills for getting along with others

and doing well in school. It also helps our school be a

safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.

To help make our school even more safe and supportive, we are also going to use the Second Step

Child Protection Unit. In this unit, your child will learn the following specific skills to help him or

her stay safe from dangerous or abusive situations:

How to use the Ways to Stay Safe to recognize when something is unsafe, report anything

unsafe to an adult, and refuse to participate.

How to always ask a parent or the person in charge first before going somewhere, doing

something, or accepting something from someone.

How to recognize safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and how to use the Private Body

Parts Rule to identify possible sexual abuse.

How to refuse and report unsafe or unwanted touches and how to report possible sexual

abuse to an adult.

To keep your child safe and protected, everyone at school needs to be involved. So all our staff will

get special training in how to:

Recognize and report suspected child sexual abuse and other forms of maltreatment

Respond to and support children who have been abused or who are facing other challenages

Use strategies that promote a safe and supportive classroom

You also have an important role in helping your child stay safe! Home Links 1-5 in the Child

Protection Unit have activities to help you and your child create a family safety plan.

If you have any questions about the Child Protection Unit or the Second Step program, please

contact your teacher. For more information on our school’s child protection policies and procedures,

check our school website or contact the school office.

Go to SecondStep.org and log in with the grade level Activation Key to get more information about

what your child is learning in the Child Protection Unit.

Thank you for helping us make our school a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.

5th grade students in Miss Kerr’s math class used the Kagan strategy “Quiz, Quiz, Trade” to assess their background knowledge with fractions. Kagan structures are instructional strategies designed to promote cooperation and communication in the classroom, boost students' confidence and retain

their interest in classroom interaction. During “Quiz, Quiz, Trade” students stand up and find a partner. Partners take turns quizzing each other and either coach or praise one another. Partners

trade cards and raise their hands to find new partners until time is up.

Staff + Students = Making Connections

D114 teachers and staff know how important it is to make connections and build relationships with students. Staff members engage and empower students every day because they know that having support from caring adults help students build life and leadership skills, make connections to others and their world, and develop a positive sense of self. Pictured above: Ms. Jalove and Ms. Dory spending quality time with students during lunch.

temperature inside Stanton really heated up during

our annual Academic Pep Rally. “We love

celebrating and recognizing student growth at

Stanton,” says Mr. Sefcik. The staff and students

had a great time supporting each other and

forgetting about the cold and snowy weather, even

if it was only for just one day. Over 160 students

were recognized for meeting their target growth

in MAP testing, iReady math, and meeting and/or

exceeding expectations in PARCC.
