ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL All Children ages 3 years through the 5th Grade are welcome at Zion Sunday

School. Classes are Sunday mornings at 10:15 from September to May. To register your children for Sunday School, you may contact the church office

Zion Lutheran Annual Congregational Meeting Minutes for January 28, 2018

(To be approved at the 2019 Annual Meeting) The meeting was called to order at 11:37am by President Polly Lohman. Thirty-eight members signed in on the meeting attendance sheet. Laura Kilner provided a back-ground PowerPoint slide show of the highlights of 2017 at Zion. Polly asked for members to save pictures for a similar slide show for the next congregational meeting as it is important to be reminded of all that members do both within and outside of the church. The following reports were reviewed without addition or correction:

Zion Lutheran Church Proposed 2018 Plan of Spending: correction on p.21 of report. The bottom right corner of the chart should read: “Total Proposed Plan for Spending for 2018. A small increase was budgeted for based on 2017 giving.” Additionally, the dollar amount listed for the 2018 plan should be 155,271 rather than 155.271. A motion to approve the spending plan as sub-mitted with the corrections as indicated was made by Pat Hovi and seconded by Sam Gray. The motion carried. BALLOT Church Council-Three Year Term (4 needed): Sara Schubert-McKone, Cheryl Kucharski, Patricia Hovi and Anthony Anderson had agreed to nomination and were listed on the ballot. No other nominations were made from the floor. A motion was made by Linda Brow and seconded by Lucy Sullivan to accept the nominations for council as listed. Motion carried. Nominating Committee-One Year Term: There were no nominations made on the ballot or from the floor to fill

these open positions. Polly noted that there was time to locate people for this committee and the ballot was left blank. Audit Committee-One Year Term: Nominations from the floor included Kendra Lohman, Libby Gray, Lucy Sullivan and Sam Gray. A motion was made by Mary Jo Bartylla and seconded by Pat Hovi to accept the nomina-tions. Motion carried. Annual Synod Assembly Representatives: Nominations from the floor were made for Sam and Libby Gray to attend as representatives. Vicky Holm made a motion to accept this nomination and Pat Hovi seconded. Motion carried. Conference Assembly Delegates: Nominations from the floor were made for Aine Merrill and Becky Hubbard to serve as delegates. Lucy Sullivan made a motion to accept this nomination and Jan Arena seconded. Motion carried. New Business

Appreciation for Polly’s efforts as Council President and for outgoing council members was

expressed. Discussion was held around the plan for The New

Day Band to host a meatball dinner in February to raise money to replace the projector in the sanctuary.

Vicki Garro reminded members that those who be-long to Thrivent had access to funds to help raise money for projects and that we should remember to look into that when planning fundraisers and considering other needs.

Pat Hovi noted that she would need to miss council meetings through May. Discussion will be held by council as to the best to manage this situation.

A motion was made at 12:25pm by Becky Hubbard to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Pat Hovi. Motion carried and council members gathered to meet briefly to vote on officers. Respectfully submitted, Lynn Rochon Council Secretary

As I wake up at 6 AM I see light. Have you noticed, as I have, the daylight is lasting longer? Even though snow is forecast this week it makes me think SPRING! EASTER! GRADUATION! VACATION!

Sew n' Sews have been meeting to piece together fabric squares into happy quilt designs. Last week six quilts were delivered to one of our recipients who use them where needed.

Care Basket Ministry Please take a Care Basket for those you know who have been ill, a death has occurred in the family, a person may need a smile to let them know we care about them. We have baskets with soup, a book, small presents in them and a card that states we care. Baskets are in the closet in the fellowship hall. Write on the clipboard the date, recipient of basket , and who will deliver the basket. Thank you for being the hands and feet to show others we care about them.

We are working from a limited birthday list. Please check with the office to see if you are on Sheperd’s Staff with a birth date. There are many names without the date. Let’s plan ahead for APRIL.

Psalm 22 25From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will pay before those who fear him. 26The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord. May your hearts live forever!

Psalm 22 is one of my favorite psalms. The whole thing – from beginning to end, all 31 verses of it – cover a range of human emotions. It begins with a lament that most of us have heard, especially if you have been to a Good Friday Service: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” That’s right, Jesus was quoting scripture while he was on the cross.

If you are a classic rock fan, you might recognize verses 13-15 as quoted at the end of the classic hit “Hang On To Your Life” from the Share The Land album by The Guess Who:

They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. (King James Bible)

What the psalmist starts out as a lament continues with a description of what is wrong with his life, and concluded with a hymn of praise. I think this is a really good progression of faith. First, complain about God ignoring you, then enumerate all the problems that you have, and finally ending up with praising God, even if nothing changes.

Some days it just feels like nothing goes right. Some days you just have to complain, even if no one’s listening. And every day is a day to praise God, even when there’s scant evidence in your life that God has your best interests at heart.

Because that’s what faith is all about – believing that God is present, even when we can’t sense God.

Church Council Meeting Thursday, January 18, 2018

Present: Pastor Victor, Polly Lohman, Ken Mertz Jr., Lynn Rochon, Laura Kilner, Linda Moe, Greg Kvam, Tim Ingersoll, Don Anderson, Marilyn Starstead, Vicky Holm Absent: JR Pedersen, Becky Hubbard

Meeting was called to order at 6:03 pm by President Polly Lohman. Linda provided devotions. Vicky will do devotions for the meeting in February.

Reports

Secretary's Report: Report was reviewed. Motion was made by Vicky and seconded by Linda to approve minutes. Motion carried.

Treasurer's Report: Report was reviewed. It was additionally noted that 10% of the proceeds of the pasty bake were gifted to the synod. Vicky made a motion, seconded by Laura to accept the Treasurer’s Report as submitted. Motion carried.

Pastor's Report: Pastor has a new office chair which is working well for him. On January 28th and February 4th Tom Potterton will be here for pulpit supply while Pastor is on vacation with his family. The council pres-ident usually coordinates meeting the supply pastor to welcome him/her. Discussion is being had about hav-ing a combined Good Friday service at Our Saviors in Billings Park. A service of healing is being scheduled during Holy Week at Zion. Sam Gray will be filling in every other week at Pilgrim while they seek a new organist.

Logos: (Lynn) Logos Sunday will be March 4 with one service at 10:00. On that Sunday the Sunday School will be hosting their annual spud luncheon fundraiser. There will also be one service at 10:00 on Confirma-tion Sunday which is scheduled for May 20th.

Sunday School: (Laura) The Sunday School will have a Valentine’s Party on Feb. 11 from 12-1. All are in-vited and volunteers are needed.

Worship and Music: (Linda) A welcome card is being planned to be sent to visitors. Blank postcards are available for this purpose. The pew pads aren’t being filled out as hoped, and the congregation needs to be reminded to pass them during service. Will the hand bell choir be continued?

Missions: Marilyn will be selling Younkers booklets. They are continuing to make mittens.

Congregation & Caring: (Marilyn) Marilyn visited residents, brought communion and flowers. She also showed pictures of the baby shower. She will continue this important ministry when she leaves council.

WELCA: No report.

Audit Committee: (Polly) Lucy Sullivan has volunteered to be on this committee. Polly will continue to look for another member.

Operations & Finance: The To-Do List was discussed. Appreciation for the updated bulletin boards was ex-pressed. Volunteers for the gardens will be needed in the spring. A meatball supper will be held by New Day Band on Feb. 13 to fund replacement of the projector in the sanctuary.

Unfinished Business Nominating Committee Status Update: The committee has filled the four ballot nominations needed. This

topic may be removed from unfinished business. New Membership Drive: Polly has expressed interest in focusing on this in the future when she is no

longer on council. This topic may be removed from unfinished business. Preparing for Annual Reports: Done. This topic may be removed from unfinished business. Annual Meeting: Sunday, January 28, 2018. There will be one service at 10:00 am followed by a potluck

meal and the meeting. This topic may be removed from unfinished business. Christmas Tree: It was decided to keep the tree and it was color-coded and packed away in labeled boxes

with a list to make it easier to assemble for Advent. This topic may be removed from unfinished busi-ness.

Credit/Debit Card giving: Greg will order the square needed to make this work. We’ll revisit this as un-

finished business.

New Business Community Outreach: Discussion was held around the many ways Zion does community outreach. It was

noted by Polly that this is an area in which we do a good job. Laura, with help from Lynn, will do a PowerPoint for the annual meeting as a review of the many of the things the congregation has accom-plished in 2017.

Personnel Committee Report: Our custodian resigned effective the end of the month. The position is posted. Those interested will submit a cover letter and resume to the church office. It is posted as a 15-20 hr./week position. Additionally, annual reviews of personnel will be completed.

The Council President-Polly Lohman, Treasurer-Becky Hubbard, Greg Kvam and Marilyn Starstead all have terms ending in January 2018. Their contributions to council are greatly appreciated. New officers will be determined by the 2018 Council after the Annual Congregational Meeting. Additionally, a reso-lution to authorize bank signatures will be made at that time as well.

A motion was made to adjourn by Greg at 7:55pm. Marilyn seconded. Motion carried, and we closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

New Business Discussion was held involving filling officer positions for the 2018 Church Council. The following agreed to accept

Pat Hovi made a motion to accept the nominations of officers, and Laura Kilner seconded. Motion carried.

The council made a resolution to authorize the following to provide bank signatures: President Vicky Holm Treasurer JR Pederson Greg Kvam

Discussion was held around the conflict Pat Hovi will have with a Thursday night class she is taking thorough May. It was decided to consider Pat as having an excused absence until June. She will be kept updated on council issues.
