We are also in the prime of our tournament season and we hope that you choose to participate in some fun and great competitions. The 2016 dues schedule has been published on our website at SunCityCountryClub.org and this information is available in our golf shop. There is a very nice incentive in place for those who commit early to next season. I hope that many take advantage of this offer because this gives us an idea of how many are coming back and what we can do to go above and beyond with our golf programs and course preparation next October. Some feedback I have received from some members is that the term “non-refundable” creates some hesitation. Please know that Sun City Country Club has worked with and will continue to work with those whose lives throw them curve balls and need to make a change in plans next fall. I feel we have been very fair with those who have been called back to the north early and I promise that we will continue this flexibility this year. We had to “take our medicine” and skip an overseed this past season, but again I’ll reiterate that because of this, our golf course will be so much better this summer and the overseed in October will be great. Our staff, greens committee, board of governors, and I have set high goals and standards for not only golf course conditions but for service levels at Sun City Country Club. We hope that you feel welcomed every time you are at the club and see our enthusiasm to make you feel at home. Thank you again for your patience through many transitions that we have gone through this season and we hope that you continue to call Sun City Country Club your home upon your return! 18-Hole Men News… The weather is getting great, the Bermuda is stirring – spring is in the air. The boys of summer are arriving all over the valley, things are looking good. February ended with our second major tournament, match play. There were seven flights. Vice President – Events Coordinator Rick Ebbesen did a great job of distributing funds for our second major, with right at 50% of these field getting $15 or more. Flight winners are as follows: Flight #7 Bob Smart defeated Al Alstedt, Flight 6 Doc Lawver defeated Pete Yonikas, Flight 5 Rick Carlson defeated Bob DeGranier, Flight 4, birthday boy Bill Penfold defeated Cal Coates, Flight 3 Bill Jordan won by forfeit over Larry Webber, Flight 2 Bernie Dague defeated Jim Mitzel, and Flight 1 Bill Patterson defeated Jim Dana. All winners received $35 PSC and $25 PSC went to 2nd place. The month of March will be a busy one, starting with our 3rd major the Club Championship, this is our gross championship beginning March 9, 16, 23, defending champion is Mike Roether. Good luck to all – this is a flighted event. We have our second men’s mixer with PE on Wednesday, March 2 with music on the patio at 5 PM. There was a good turnout for Don Hart last week February 24. Not many from SCCC Men’s Club, you missed a great time. Bob Chadwick chairman of the 25th Saguaro Classic is gearing up for our flagship event. Teams that do not have at least one member must receive the approval of Mr. Chadwick. You must have verifiable USGA handicap to participate. This could be the last Saguaro Classic so lets make it a great success.

9 Hole Men’s News… About 7 years ago John Wassmer and I discussed the possibility of forming a 9 Hole Men’s golf club. Manager Bob Chadwick had no objection and we agreed to play every Tuesday at 3:00. We started with just five members and quickly grew up to 12 players. We had fun but something was missing. We needed more members. Then along came two Irish hooligans from the 18-hole men’s club. Tom McLaughlin and Michael Dunn suggested that we play a different game every week. The members voted and almost unanimously agreed. Since then, the 9 Hole Men’s club has grown to over 30 members. Tom and Michael not only plan and organize the games, put teams together balancing better players with less talented players (and there are a few of us), but have to explain how the teams will play games like Yahtzee, etc. Being our members are all Rhode Scholars we have no problem comprehending!!!! Their work doesn’t stop there. They collect dues, team scorecards, calculate the team scores and reward the winners the following week. We owe Tom and Michael a huge THANK YOU for all they contribute to the 9 Hole Men’s club. Another thanks goes out to Rick Ebbesen, Joe Emanuel and all the other better golfers who help balance our teams.

Gary A. Thorfinnson

P.S. We welcome anyone who would like to join us for a fun game of golf and maybe a little libation after. See you next Tuesday. Board of Governors… Hard to believe it is March already! The season’s end will soon be in sight. The Western mixer is March 5 and the going away party, Bye Bye Birdie, will be Saturday, April 9. Time is flying by. We hope that you will all be returning to Sun City Country Club next year, especially our new members. If you can please let the club know that you plan to return for next season, it will help us greatly in making plans and establishing a budget for next year. We have enjoyed getting to know all of our new members and hope you have felt welcome.

Work is continuing to be done on the course. It’s nice to see the green grass on the fairways and greens. Because we used less water this winter, the excess will carry over to the summer which should help establish the grass. Several repairs will be done to greens and bunkers over the summer.

Again, as Board of Governors, we are your liaison between the golf course owners and staff. Please let us know of concerns or issues you may have so that we can address them as necessary. Thanks.

Holly Berquam President, Board of Governors

509-998-7462 [email protected] From the CEO… This has been an exciting month for the club and our staff. The condition of the course is improving daily as Jamey and our staff move us from the “Painted Desert” to an early return of our Bermuda grass. On February 29 we had our second field trip with students from Raymond S. Kellis High School completing their Introduction to Golf as part of Sun City Country Club’s program to do good in our community. Jamey has been trimming and thinning trees to get better sunlight to our greens. Jim will be planting more trees in selective locations where they will not interfere with play. If you live on the course and have suggestions or want to host a tree planting please contact me. Thank you to all that supported our local state assembly member Rick Gray. He is collecting signatures to run for the Corporate Commissioner. He is a friend to golf and our club so if you are a registered voter stop in and let’s talk. Special thank you to our “Golf Wiki” Bob Blean for all he is doing for GPS, Golf Program in Schools. www.GolfPS.org. His ability to impart his vast knowledge of golf makes learning fun. When you want to tune up your game he is the place to start.
