On February 2nd, 2016 Ms. Rosen and twenty six of her students went on a

field trip to see Shakespeare’s First Folio at Florida International University.

The First Folio was published in 1623 by two of Shakespeare’s friends who

wanted to preserve his writings for posterity. It took them seven years to

collect and publish the 900 pages of the Folio (that’s 36 plays!) because of

the laborious printing process at the time where every single letter had to be

individually stamped on a sheet of paper. However, without their hard work

and dedication to preserving Shakespeare’s brilliance, we would not have some of Shakespeare’s most

infamous masterpieces, such as, Macbeth, Twelfth Night, Julius Caesar, and The Taming of the Shrew. While

on this fieldtrip, the students were able to see a book and a piece of history that was already over 150 years

old when the Declaration of Independence was signed. Additionally, some of our brave Nautilus Middle School

thespians brilliantly acted out Hamlet (Shakespeare’s longest play) in thirty two seconds!
