Words to Live By By Dave McElheran, Chaplain

“The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will

take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will

rejoice over you with singing.” ~Zephaniah 3:17

God is with you wherever you go! What an incredible thought that God is mighty to save. When you look to Him, He will quiet your heart with His abundant love. He takes great de-light when His children come to Him with a grateful song.

Getting Old Submitted by Carol Porter, Resident

A few short years can’t make me old, I think in my youth.

Eternity lies just ahead, and life, and joy, and truth. I’m going to live forever then.

Life will go on, it’s grand! You tell me I’m getting old? You just don’t understand!

The dweller in my little “house” is young and bright and free,

Just starting on a life to last throughout eternity. You only view the outside shell,

that’s all that most folks see. You tell me I am getting old?

You’ve mixed my “house” with me!

Calling All Quilters for the Third Annual Quilt Show By Barbara Agnew, Activities Dept.

Nearly 200 beautifully sewn quilts will be on display during the Caring Quilters Annual Quilt Show, Satur-day, April 18, from 1-4 pm. Quilts from the late 1800s as well as dozens of newer creations will be pre-sented at Hearthstone at Murrayhill. “We’re hoping to make this year our most successful show ever,” says Sue Reinhart, a member of Caring Quilters. “Residents, staff, family and friends may bring their quilts to the Activities Department begin-‐ning mid-March. All shapes, styles, and sizes are welcome.” Quilters may bring their entries to the Activities Department on March 18 and 25, from 11 am-5 pm, and on March 21, from 9:30 am-2 pm. Two gorgeous quilts made by our Caring Quilters will be raffled at the show with proceeds benefitting the Alzheimer’s Association of Oregon. The show also features a sale table with fabric pieces, books, quilting blocks and jewelry. Caring Quilters was organized three years ago with the pur-pose of creating beautifully crafted quilts for residents who are receiving hospice care. Group members include Hearthstone residents, families, staff and friends who meet monthly to share quilting tips, fabrics and creative ideas.

A Tip from Angel

Cracking the Glass Ceiling By Carol Porter, Resident On January 28, 2015, new ground was broken. For the first time in Hearthstone’s history, a feminine voice called to order the meeting of the Residents Council and the monthly residents meeting. From the beginning, capable men have provided leadership for the Residents Council. The late Roy Dancer pioneered and led the first meetings, followed by co-chairmen Bob Gray and Jerry Hough. Since Bob’s decision to retire, Jerry carried on as chairman. It was in January when Jerry was hunkered down with a bad cold that the council secretary, Carol Porter (﴾Jerry’s wife)﴿, took charge. So, ladies, the glass ceiling has been shattered, and you could be next!

Test Your Steadiness By Angel Higbee, Fitness Instructor

Of all the various causes of major falls, impaired gait and balance account for most of them. So test yourself. Are you limping or shuffling? Can you do heel-to-toe walking (taking steps with one foot directly in front of the other) without lurching off-balance? Can you stand on one leg for at least 30 seconds? Less than that sug-gests a balance problem. You can also do two other tests—both have a high predictive value for future falls if you flunk. ~The Get Up and Go Test: Sit in a chair without arms, rise and walk 10 feet forward, turn around and walk back to the chair and sit. If it takes more than 14 seconds, you are at risk for falls. ~The Functional Reach Test: Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, extend one arm in front of you at shoulder height. Reach as far forward as you can without losing balance. If it is less than seven inches, you are prone to falls. Please keep in mind when doing any of these tests that you must have someone with you to time you, measure, or even help steady you if needed. Safety first! And let the results be a motivation to strength-en your core and improve your balance.

Hearthstone 2015 King & Queen Announced By Barbara Agnew, Activities Dept.

More than one hundred residents celebrated Valen-tine’s Day in a big way this past month. In addition to desserts, party favors and trivia galore, residents enjoyed the crowning of the new King and Queen, resi-dents Ted and Deanna Parker. The 2014 royalty, King Walter Dingfield and Queen Bobbye Zikeli, passed their reign to the Parkers, thank-ing the audience for a year of exciting events and monthly columns in the Murrayhill Times. “We had so much fun being your king and queen,” Walter said. “Bobbye and I loved planning how we could make life more enjoyable for you folks. We wish the very best to Ted and Deanna.” The Parkers moved to Hearthstone last summer and have quickly become a vital part of the community. They participate in exercise classes, Munch Bunch, Wii bowling, the Red Hat Society, and bean bag baseball. Congratulations to the Parkers and a big thank-you to Walter and Bobbye.

Anna’s Place Moments

Framed Art is a Big Hit on Valentine’s Day By Frank Pablo, Life Enrichment Coordinator

Thank you to the staff at Hospice Care of the Northwest for making our Valentine’s Day at Anna Place’s a very special holiday. Hospice Care staff brought picture frames for our residents to paint and decorate. Photos were then placed in the frames and given to family members as beautiful Valentine’s Day keepsakes. The additional staff from Hospice Care of the Northwest meant that each resident had their own “artist advisor” to help them create a beautiful one-of-a-kind frame. The residents had a wonderful time put-ting Valentine-themed stickers on their handiwork. What a great way to commemorate Valentine’s Day 2015!

The Stuff in Stuffed Animals and Dollies… By Frank Pablo, Life Enrichment Coordinator

Anyone who has been calmed by the warmth of a doll knows it has the power to soothe and comfort. For many residents here at Anna’s Place, the presence of dolls is reassuring physically and emotionally. Although it can be discomforting to see an adult hold a doll or stuffed animal, it’s important to acknowledge the benefits that dolls and toy animals provide to adults who are struggling with demen-tia, loneliness, or fear. These endearing items provide comfort on so many levels and often makes it easier to redirect a resident who is anxious or upset. If you have a parent or a loved one who needs to have their day brightened, why not choose the power of a stuffed animal or doll? They last longer and may bring more smiles than a bouquet of flowers. What a great invention that can assist our residents in so many unexpected ways!

Ray Lynn: Soldier, Businessman, Grandfather Interviewed by resident Ruben Wilson

RAY W. LYNN was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on December 30, 1932. It was during the Great Depression and times were really tough. His parents divorced while he was still an infant. His mother worked in a cur-tain factory. Each morning she would take him to a Salvation Army day care center, and pick him up at night. In order to provide more care for Ray, his mom took him to live with his grandparents in Aloha, Ore., where during his formative years he was cared for by kind and generous relatives. Eventually Ray’s mother remarried; how-‐ever, Ray did not get along with his stepfather. So when he was 17 years old, Ray enlisted in the United States Air Force which he fondly remembers as the best years of his youthful life. Following basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Ray was sent to Hickam AFB in Hawaii. He was assigned to a radar site located at the top of Koko Crater overlooking Hanauma Bay. The sister station was on the opposite end of Oahu where the Japanese planes were first detected on their way to the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. When the Korean War started in 1950, Ray volunteered to take training as an airborne radio operator at Fort Shafter in Honolulu. There he learned Morse code, and increased his proficiency to send and receive up to 35 words per minute. He was then assigned to an Air Force C54. His first trip was flying to Haneda AFB near Tokyo, Japan, with an overnight stop at Wake Island, just north of the Marshall Islands. On the return trip they stopped over at Midway Island. The trips were long and slow. He was often sent to Eniwetok Atoll to bring supplies and equipment used for nuclear tests. This required “secret clearances.” They often landed at Johnston Island, a manmade runway over coral reefs, and the island of Kwajalein enroute to Eniwetok.

Later, Ray was assigned to medical air evacuation on planes that carried 18 litters, two Air Force nurses, and one orderly. He transported injured personnel from Tokyo to Tripler Army Hospital on Oahu. These soldiers had lost feet or legs in the Korean War and were suffering from gangrene. The smell of rotting flesh which filled the cargo area was terrible. These Marines and soldiers were all victims of the battle of the Chosen Reservoir in Korea. They lacked adequate warm win-ter clothing. Ray had acquired 1,900 hours of flight over the Pacific. When Ray returned to the United States he was assigned to

309th Bomb wing in Tucson, Ariz., as an airborne countermeasure/radio operator. He flew in SACV B50’s. Ray was discharged on January 4, 1954. Ray’s stepfather had started a small drapery business in Oregon and decided that he wanted to retire. In 1966, Ray was able to purchase the business at the cost of the equipment, turning the business into retail sales. St. Vincent’s Hospital called asking for a quote on draperies and sometime later, cubicle curtains. Ray’s company began selling blinds, curtains, tracks, and IV trees to hospitals. His company had contracts with the state of Oregon for 18 years. They sold 7,000 pleated shades to Nike. They supplied most of these items to Kaiser Permanente, Legacy and Provi-dence. It became a very successful business that Ray really enjoyed. However he chose to close the busi-ness in 2009. In 1983, Ray and LaVerna Boldman were married. They raised four children. In 2013, two of their daughters took it upon themselves to find a retirement community for their parents. They both agreed on Hearthstone at Murrayhill. Shortly after they moved in, LaVerna passed away on March 16, 2014. Ray made a recent visit to his great grandson, Matthew, at New River Marine Air Station at Jacksonville, North Carolina, and Mathew’s wife who is graduating from the University of North Carolina. They are expecting a baby in May. Ray is now awaiting the arrival of a great, great-grandchild. This will add to his clan of six grandchildren, and six great–grandchildren.

Heart to Heart By Carol Porter, Resident

It has been said that everyone needs three or four hugs a day. Actually, it is a proven fact that babies can and do die when there is no one to hold and cuddle them. And as adults, we haven’t outgrown the need to be touched. I witnessed the remarkable healing power of touch when a close family member was emotionally para-lyzed by a deep depression. Realizing that words could not reach her, the doctor, in my presence, would hold her in a warm embrace. That wise man administered the treatment that was her bridge to reality and life. It is easy to be caught up in the many activities that are available to us, but we need also to give attention to one another as per-sons. Our wonderful community provides a setting where all of us can be life-givers. Behind a smiling face there can be a hurting or lonely person. A touch on the arm, a pat on the back or a friendly hug can mean more than we’ll ever know. Have you given someone a hug today?

Batter up! Members of Hearthstone’s HAMsters bean bag baseball team headed to Summerfield Retire-‐ment Community for a competitive ball game last month. The one-point game brought out the very best in our residents’ athletic skill and team spirit. Although the 21-20 score meant a loss for Hearthstone, the HAMsters are set for a rematch in April. Wearing their team green apparel and with weeks of practice games under their belt, the dozen-plus resi-dents anticipate a win. “We thoroughly enjoyed playing at Summerfield and are looking forward to our rematch in April,” explained Dick and Pauline Aaron, HAMster team members. For any residents interested in honing their bean bag baseball skills, the Activity Department has a practice board available in the Community room on the second floor. Pick up games are also welcome! Go HAMsters!
