In the following parable, Jesus asks Peter the Ultimate Lenten Question
Is What We do about Us or about Him?
One day Jesus said to his disciples: “I’d like you to carry a stone for Me.” He didn’t give any explanation.
So the disciples looked around for a stone to carry, and Peter, being the practical sort, sought out the smallest stone
he could possibly find. After all, Jesus didn’t give any regulations for weight and size! So he put it in his pocket.
Jesus then said: “Follow Me.” He led them on a journey. About noontime Jesus had everyone sit down. He waved
his hands and all the stones turned to bread. He said, “Now it’s time for lunch.” In a few seconds, Peter’s lunch
was over.
When lunch was done Jesus told them to stand up. He said again, “I’d like you to carry a stone for Me.”
This time Peter said, “Aha! Now I get it!” So he looked around and saw a small boulder. He hoisted it on his back
and it was painful, it made him stagger. But he said, “I can’t wait for supper.” Jesus then said: “Follow Me.” He
led them on a journey, with Peter barely being able to keep up. Around supper time Jesus led them to the side of a
river. He said, “Now everyone throw your stones into the water.” They did. Then he said, “Follow Me,” and be-
gan to walk. Peter and the others looked at him dumbfounded. Jesus sighed and said, “Don’t you remember what I
asked you to do? Who were you carrying the stones for? Were you carrying them for you or for me?
As the disciples follow Jesus as he “turns his face toward Jerusalem, this is the ultimate Lenten Question.
--These Strange Ashes, Elisabeth Elliot --
Pastries with the Pastor
Children hear about Jesus every Sunday in their Sunday School class, and hearing about Jesus leads to
us to want to know Jesus personally. However, many children have questions in their minds about the whole
“Ask Jesus into Your Heart” thing. Even parents may not fully understand the importance of that life-giving
event. Our “Pastries with the Pastor” will try to answer some of those questions. We always have a great time
in these special classes and no pressure whatsoever is put upon the children to make a decision at that time.
However, they do come away from the class understanding how this all happens, and some are ready to make
their own decision to accept Jesus as their Savior.
Pastries with the Pastor Class during the Children’s Sunday School hour
March 17th, 9:45 am. Parents are always welcome
Lenten Candles for the 2013 Season
This year we are beginning a New Tradition in our Lenten Celebration. The Advent Candles, which
were lit one by one during the weeks of Advent, are being used again as our Lenten Candles. In the Advent
season we light one candle each week leading up to Christmas. In the Lenten season we extinguish one candle
each week. During Advent the last candle lit was the “Christ Candle.” During Lent the last candle to be
extinguished is the Christ Candle representing Jesus’ death on the Cross. Then, on Easter the Christ Candle
will come to life again as we light it in celebration of the Resurrection.

From the Board of Deacons
From now through Easter, the Deacons’ Bible emphasis will be reading the daily Lenten scriptures in the booklet
“Imitators of Christ.” Please join us in this daily study. These booklets are available on the table in the hall in the
Sunday School building. This is a special time when we can prepare our hearts for a closer walk with Jesus and
become a more effective witness for Christ.
Beginning in March the Deacons’ Bible emphasis will be the New Testament, Book of Acts. Join with us as we
seek to become a more Bible based church.
Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions
“Whatever it takes - reaching one.” is the theme for the 2013 Annie Armstrong Easter
Offering for North American Missions that will be taken up during the month of March.
Annie Walker Armstrong was a passionate advocate for missionaries and their work, Annie Armstrong is one of
Southern Baptists heroes. She championed missions involvement and she gave personally and sacrificially of her
time and talents to see the gospel go forward throughout the world. As founder of Woman’s Missionary Union,
Annie’s commitment to doing whatever it takes has created a rich legacy of people who were awakened and
responded to the call of the gospel and the missions mandate to take it throughout the world. That legacy
continues in the lives of modern-day missions champions who pray fervently, give generously and go
continuously to share the good news of Jesus Christ.
Envelopes will be placed in the pew racks during the month of march for you to put your gift in and place in the
offering plate on Sundays.
Mission Moment
Thanks to everyone for your generous support of Mark and Sara Williams and their mission work in South
Africa. Also, thank you for your support of one of our members who was displaced due to a fire. Your love and
generosity are appreciated.
Please continue to buy items for the food closet. Needed items include: powdered milk (in single pouches), soups,
canned meat, canned fruit, cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, jelly, mac & cheese, spaghetti, and spaghetti sauce.
In April, our mission assignment is to purchase blank DVD’s for Camp Alkulana. Please give money to Tiffany
and she will make the purchase.
As always, thank you for your continued support of our mission projects.
Lent is a time of prayer and reflection, a time to acknowledge our shortcomings and to put our spiritual houses in
order. As we consider our spiritual lives this Lent, it may also be an appropriate time to pause briefly to consider
the physical facility in which we worship, our church building. For years, the sanctuary roof has been leaking.
Most of you have undoubtedly noticed the cracking and crumbling plaster in the ceiling and upper walls. It is
time for us to address this particular need of our church building. At a special called business meeting on
Wednesday, March 6, at 7:00pm, the Premises and Finance committees present the plans to repair the roof.
Please make every effort to be present for this meeting as we will be voting on the largest single expenditure by
WBC in years.

The Youth want to say "thank you" to all of you who came and participated in our
"SOUPer Bowl" Luncheon for Sara and Mark Williams. Thanks to your generosity
we were able to raise approx. $300.00 to help them with their missionary work.
There has been much talk about making this Luncheon an annual affair!
We also want to say "thank you" to the adult drivers/chaperones who helped us
with our snow tubing trip on Feb. 18th. We had a total of 28 "tubers" and no
injuries!!
There will be an informational class for all Youth grades 6-12 who may be
considering baptism into WBC. Even if you are just curious about what baptism is
all about, you are encouraged to be a part of this special Sunday school lesson on
March 24th in the Youth room from 9:40-10:45. Come and join Rev. Duganne in a
discussion/question and answer time regarding baptism and what it means.
Westhampton Baptist Youth is open to ALL Youth grades 6-12 regardless of
Church membership/denominational status. We meet every Sunday after worship
for food, fun, and fellowship. Won't you come and join us from Noon-2:30 p.m.
Bring a bag lunch, drinks will be provided.
Here's the lineup for March Youth meetings:

“The Library Corner of Our Church”
The Book Club will review Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn for our March 24th meeting.
Barbara and I have both read this and it has been on the “Best Seller” list in the
Richmond newspaper for several Sundays. We would love for anyone interested to
join us. Let us know and we will have lunch and fellowship after church.
There are always books of various interests in our Library and we would love for
you to come up and explore the selection. If you need help, please ask us and we’ll
be happy to search out any book we feel would satisfy your interest. As always,
thanks for all donations. We appreciate your interest to grow our Library.

“Sunday School Update”
January Bible Study is a tradition in the Baptist church and we were fortunate to
have Rev. Bill Duganne lead us in “Living like You Belong to God” for six weeks.
The first night 18 members were present but unfortunately, participation decreased.
Rev. Duganne has offered to continue a class starting in March, and I would love to
see us take advantage of this offer. Please let me know if you would like to commit
to attending on Friday nights at 7:30 pm to further your knowledge. This is a
blessed chance for all of us to learn especially Sunday school teachers, Deacons
and Church Council members.
