An old story from the Bible tellsabout King Hezekiah. He had

been warned by Isaiah to be leeryof any foreign entanglements. How-ever, the tiny kingdom of Israelwas being severely threatened bythe mighty empire of Assyria. Amessenger from there came to thecourt of Hezekiah in a gesture ofpeace. King Hezekiah was flatteredand showed his Assyrian visitor ev-erything in the palace, including ac-cess to Israel’s military arsenal. Soonafter that visit, the fierce monarchof Assyria, Sennacherhib, camemarching to the borders of Israel. So, Hezekiah’s emissary turned outto be not a friend by a spy.

If only Hezekiah had not beentaken in, if only he had listened towhat Isaiah was telling him. “Ifonly”—how many times have wesaid it? If only we had listened! Ifonly we had decided differently! How many decisions would havemade life easier, “if only”?

But, we can’t go back. We can’tundo what is done. Often there isno second chance. We can say ei-

ther “yes” or “no.” When Britainwas facing its troubles during therebellious 17th Century, the thenyoung Prince Charles fell in love.He was secretly married and a childwas born. His mother, the exileddowager queen, was furious. Shepleaded for her son to give up thechild and his wife. Prince Charlesreplied, “If only, it was possible togo back and begin life over again.”But, he couldn’t and didn’t.

For every misjudgment, welearn a lesson. No one or no onething is, of course, absolutely right. If we accept what is offered, we doso believing a “yes” is better than a“no.” The Bible calls this the will ofGod. The will of God does not con-demn. It gives us freedom. We allrespond to a voice within us, whichleads us to obedience rather thanto confusion. So, do we still say, “ifonly”? Or, have we gone beyondthat to reside in the company ofthose who would not turn theirbacks on us. The alternative to “ifonly is to believe “thy will bedone.”

This year,we also had coverage in the localmedia, Sahib Public RelationsChairman Harold Eady arrangedfor an ad in the Sarasota HeraldTribune Ticket edition. Most arealeaders agree there are in excess of2,500 Masonic sojourners living inour area (Masons who belong toMasonic bodies in another state, and have never pursued becomingactive in our district,) the goal ofthe Rusty Mason always was to tryto reach these Masons and get themto be involved locally and to per-haps join our area Masonicbodies.

The Shriners and the Masonicteam that put on the 16th An-

nual Rusty Mason Reunion did agreat job of refreshing memories ofthe 120+ Master Masons in atten-dance (there were 30+ that werenot affiliated with a local BlueLodge and had never attended ourRusty Mason and 29 who were notShriners.) I understand several pe-titions were handed out for theShrine. This year they added acomedic dramatization of the“Lodge of Confusion,” which dem-onstrated many things that shouldnot happen during a lodge meet-ing. Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

One word keeps coming to mind. Awesome! What the nobles of SahibShriners do is awesome!

Two things that are especially appropriate of that description are the workdone by Sahib Shriners at the East-West Shrine Football game in Januaryand the Potentate’s Ball last month. Nobody can beat the nobles of SahibShriners.

The month of March continues to be full of activities despite the loss of ourspring training opportunities as vendors at McKechnie Field. We have foundother opportunities to serve the Pirates as security personnel.

There is the Sarasota County Fair, where we sell and take tickets and mana booth to put Sahib Shriners in front of the public.

Our Divan officers have an excellent educational opportunity in attendingthe Oriental Guides seminar and the Assistant Rabbans’ seminar. Thesetwo seminars are always outstanding.

The calendar is full of activities. Sahib Shrine is the busiest temple in all ofShrinedom, as it should be. We are here for fun and fellowship, and thesupport of our philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children. Look at thecalendar in this Reporter and take part in those activities which interestyou the most.

We will finish up the month of March with a cruise to the Eastern Carib-bean March 24 to April 1. Smooth sailing and calm seas.

Yours in the Faith,

Charles M. Levan, 33°, Potentate

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Rocky Kearney, [email protected]

On February 4 we celebrated Sahib’s traditionaland spectacular Potentates Ball; A gala evening

in a beautifully decorated auditorium. The blue andwhite decorations for the event blended perfectly. The leaders of the decoration committee, namelySharon Pegararo, Linda Glendinning, EleanorWallace, Donna LaBell, Yvonne Pederson and theirteam did an outstanding job! Music and the enter-tainment for the evening was provided by the verypopular Kim Jenkins and his wife. This was a veryspecial day and evening for our Illustrious PotentateCharles Levan 33°. Our 2010 Imperial Potentate andpresently Imperial Recorder Jack H. Jones, and FloridaGrand Lodge Secretary and Past Grand Master RichardLynn (also a Mahi Shriners Past Potentate,) attended.

Hospital Days collection at all the commercialsites went very well this year. Bill Long and TimKinchla co-chaired the committee and many hourswere put in by both. The financial results will besubstantial. For those who do not know, the moneycollected goes to our transportation fund. This fund isnecessary for Sahib Shriners to transport children tothe Shriners Hospital for Children. In 2011, thehospital drivers made 385 trips to the Tampa ShrinersHospital for Children. These trips resulted in 1,627clinic appointments for the year. Kudos goes to ourHospital Chairman Jesus Cabalo and then Transpor-tation Chairman Ken Clark.

Keep up the great work nobles!

Membership is still one of our top priorities, andraising money is running a close second. With

money raising we are trying to fill the gap left by theloss of baseball revenue not only to our clubs but also tothe Shrine. We have very capable Divan members andnobles making concerted efforts to achieve our goals.

February went well with Hospital Transportationcollection reaching towards our goals of filling our potto aid the transport of our patients. In addition, theShriner’s Hospital for Children affair in Tampa al-lowed us to attend meetings Friday and Saturday,February 17 and 18 to learn activities and meetimportant persona of the hospital. The Tampa Boardof Director’s dinner held Friday night February 17was combined with Egypt’s casual evening, prior tothe ball, was relaxing, pleasant and the food wasscrumptious.

The East/West football game including the tail-gate party was well orchestrated by Rocky and WendyKearney. Kudos to Rocky and Wendy as they wentabove and beyond the call. Rocky also coordinateddrivers to transport the players to where ever theyneeded to be.

This year the game was held at Tropicana Field inSt. Petersburg. It was much more comfortable thanthe field in Orlando as it was enclosed and there werereal seats. Ill. Sir Charles Levan’s Potentates Ballwent off well with fun, eating, dancing and drinkingof the Camel’s milk.

Thanks to all the nobles and their ladies for mak-ing our planned events successful and fun. Fun, fam-ily and fellowship is what it is all about and my ladyand I wish these attitudes carry through this yearand for years to come.

Well another East/West Shrine Game is behindus. Sahib had a great tailgate party and got to

watch a fantastic football game. Many thanks to allthat helped with this great adventure. Shrinedomalso got good exposure as a group from our SahibShriners helped deliver the players, coaches andreferees from the airport to the resort where theystayed. We had a table set up at the airport and therewere many travelers who stopped by the table withmany questions about Masonry and Shrinedom. Play-ers also had questions. Next year I believe we will bebetter prepared with literature and brochures tohand out. Wendy reached out with her generositywith a baby gift from the Hillbilly Gals made by ourown Donna Jones and presented it to Referee BradAllen and his expecting wife Twilla for Abigail due inMay (see photo on page 8.) The gift was a real lift tothem as their luggage was lost in travel and it brought

tears to both of them. If anything, Sahib came to therescue in the travel department, attendance at thegame and above all our Shrine attitude.

March is going to be a very busy month. To startthe month off on the second we have a Johnny Cashand June Carter Tribute with the Hillbilly Hoedownthe next day on the third. For those who work and saythey can’t make the afternoon stated meetings theseventh will be an evening meeting at 7:30 p.m.Imperial Potentate Mike Severe will visit us on March8 for lunch. Saturday the 10th will start at 10:00 a.m.with the Arcadia Rodeo Parade. You’ll have plenty oftime to go home to change for the Banjo Band Concertat 7:00 p.m. Like the ponies? March 14 is Sahib Dayat Tampa Bay Downs. The 16th is the start of theSarasota County Fair and running to March 25.The17th is St. Patrick’s Day with a St. Patty’s Day Dinner

Looking for a fishing advantage? some wiLL say ours is unfair!Consider a robotic trolling motor that will hold your boat with the precision of a pole anchor… in ANY depth of water, completely unattended.

Ever wished you could adjust your anchor location? Our Anchor Jog™ feature will allow you to fine tune your position, with precision 5 foot increments in four directions, by simply touching a button on the wireless remote. Once you nail that perfect spot you can store it to memory and come back as often as you like.

Want to free up your hands while moving to the next spot? Give your boat the control of a guided missile with our Track mode. Just point your boat at the target, press ”T“ and set your speed. The GPS Anchor™ system will steer you on a beeline course to your destination, automatically compensating for wind and current.

Have a more intricate path you would like to follow? The Route Memory function will allow you to record 8 routes up to 1000 miles each (pack a lunch!). These can be retraced in either direction and the system will automatically anchor when it reaches either end.

Curious? Give us a call or check out our website. Demos are available, but we caution you… once you’ve tried it you won’t want to fish again without the advantages of your own HD GPS Anchor™ system.

Our prayers wereanswered when Noble Mike Orsini, head of securityfor the Pirates provided the Gulf and Manatee ShrineClubs with an offer we could not refuse. We will beworking security for the ball games and Pirate City.Brother nobles who will be working security, at-tended a 40-hour seminar to receive a security licensefor the State of Florida.

We have changed our board meeting to 10:30 a.m.,and our social and business to 11:30 a.m., with lunchserved at noon. Dues for 2012 is still $10.00 pleaseremit. Our Hospital Days were successful. As usual,we will need help, as our volunteers are getting fewer.

The monthly dinner dance has been down, atten-dance wise. So, as they say on the Price is Right,“come on down and enjoy”. You don’t know what youare missing.

If you can come up with some good ideas for raisingmoney for the club, please let me know.

Over twenty able-bodied nobles and ladies servedat least one 2-hour shift or more in our all-out Hospi-tal Days solicitation effort the first weekend of Feb-ruary. Even though the weather was a bit threatening, the public responded generously at our three NorthPort Publix supermarkets. Stay tuned next month fortotals collected, who took the prize, and our gratitudefor the most hours contributed.

And each Tuesday 7:30 a.m., rain or shine, 52weeks of the year, we breakfast at the Olde WorldRestaurant in North Port for info, fellowship and hi-jinks. In our latest ‘Quotable Notable’ contest, no oneidentified Mark Twain as the famous American whoobserved, “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets youinto trouble. It’s what you know for sure that justain’t so.” So here’s our March ‘Quotable Notable’ –What famous economist warned us a long time ago:“The businessman is only tolerable so long as hisgains can be held to bear some relation to what, roughly and in some sense, his activities have con-tributed to society.”

The first non-club member to email this notable’sidentity to the scribe at the above address wins a freeTuesday morning breakfast for two with the NorthPort Shrine Club.

Our first parade for 2012 will be in Arcadia onSaturday March 10. We will car pool from Sahib toArcadia. We want to continue to have great turnoutsfrom the Greeters.

Many thanks to our Greeterettes for their hardwork at the February Birthday/Anniversary DinnerDance; besides decorating the room, they have helpedsell 50/50 tickets. These ladies support us all yearlong!

Happy Birthday to Dave Dickerson and AustinPickering in March.

The Mariners started the new year with a lot of funfilled activities planned. There will be a regular

meeting the second Wednesday of each month exclud-ing July and December. We have at least one socialplanned every month including several boating events. My goal is to get every Mariner and Mate on the waterthis year. Many believe you have to own a boat to bea Mariner. Most Mariners do not own a boat but enjoyboats and water related activities. No matter wherethe Mariners meet or what activity we are involvedwith Mariners have fun.

The Change of Watch was held on January 7 atMarina Jack. Commodore Bud Glidden started theevening with presentations including Boater of theYear awarded to Doug Jennings. The Blunder Jugaward was earned by Jon Neary. Jon isn’t too pickyabout whose shower he uses. The Mariner of the Yearwas awarded to Past Commodore Dick Hines. TheMariners can always count on Dick to be there andhelp in every way, congratulations Dick. We even hada visit by King Neptune.

One of Shriners biggest public relations opportu-nities is our Annual Hospital Days fundraiser.

This is a time when we have an opportunity to com-municate one on one with the public. We greet them,we hear stories about their family being a Shriner ora family member or friend who was helped by one ofour Shriners Hospitals for Children and we offerinformation about Shriners and our hospitals.

The Hospital Days event this year, February 2-4,was co-chaired by Tim Kinchla and Bill Long who didan outstanding job of organizing the many nobles and

several of their ladies who spent hours in front ofseveral retail outlets in our area accepting donationsfrom the public to raise the funds to support the SahibTransportation Fund. All those volunteers are to becongratulated for a job well done. If you were unableto volunteer this year, please consider doing so thenext time we have a Hospital Days event. It really isvery gratifying, rewarding and a wonderful PR oppor-tunity to be discussing with the public the wonderfulwork done by Shriners and our hospitals.

Public Relationsby Harold Eady, Director, [email protected]

The numbers for the calendar year 2011 are in forthe Hospital Transportation Unit and are a mixed

bag. The patient trips and driver hours are up but theincome is down.

Patient trips are defined as the number of patientappointments that are serviced by the Sahib Trans-portation Unit. A single driven van round trip to thehospital may include 1 to 3 patients. There were 361Tampa Hospital patient trips not including 88 tripsthat were fully processed but ultimately canceledprior to the appointment. Patient trips that were outof our hospital region became patient flights. There

were 16 patient flights to six other Shriners Hospi-tals. Those flights went to Boston, Massachusetts,Chicago, Illinois, Cincinnati, Ohio, Galveston, Texas,Houston, Texas and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Our three vans, two commercial and one mini, logged a total of 57,619 miles. There were no acci-dents and one incident involving the equipment. Theincident involved a left tire blowout while travelingsouth on l-75 last April. The driver was Mario Bojsiukof North Port.

The van #2 with a wheelchair patient was travel-ing at 70 miles per hour in the center lane when the

Page 22: March 2012

Page 22 SAHIB REPORTER March 2012

High Priest & Prophet’s notesby Connie Jacobi, [email protected]

front of the vehicle dropped and pulled to the left.Mario was able to keep the van on a straight courseunder strained control. There were two large trucksin the curb lane and luckily, the second truck driverobserved what was occurring and jammed on hisbrakes allowing Mario to get safely get to the berm.He was able to contact emergency road service, thetire was replaced by the spare and he was on his way. Those 57,619 safe miles and multiple patient con-tacts were professionally handled by Mario and our30 other active drivers.

The cost of doing business for the TransportationUnit this past year was 66% more than our income forthe same period. The direct expenses were $57,300and the income was $37,600. Regional transportationcosts were $25,900, out-of-region cost was $22,000and the balance was administrative costs.

The three vehicles mechanically performed verywell for the year requiring only the normal routinemaintenance. Van #1 received a new full set of tireswith alignment at a cost of around $600 for the singlelargest equipment expense.

The Hospital Transportation Fund is a legitimatecharity with all donations being fully deductible. Allof our collected money and donations are used for theoperation of hospital transportation. The HospitalTransportation Fund does not share monies with anyother accounts, groups or clubs.

Tell your family, friends and neighbors that acheck or money order can be made out to SahibShriners Hospital Transportation Fund and mailedor carried to the Sahib Shriners Accounting Depart-ment. Cash or credit card donations should be handledwith the Accounting Department directly.

Tiger Tim and Wild Bill, you guys made the Hos-pital Days All-Star Team. We appreciate your bull-dog efforts and Thank You.

March 17 wear your “green” and plan on coming tothe Shrine for St. Patty’s Day Dinner with yourfavorite Lassie. Make reservations.

If you can help with the Sarasota County Faircontact Fred Phillips. His email address [email protected]. Your help is needed.

Don’t forget the Sahib Shrine Circus is coming andwe need each and every one of you to help with ticketand ad sales. This is one of “our” money makingevents, so ask your neighbors and friends to go withyou to the Shrine Circus.

What a deal, you can make some $$ for your clubor unit by selling Ads. Ask those stores and shops you

go to if they would like to have an ad in our ShrineCircus book, I bet they will be “happy” you did.

Membership, Membership, Membership! TheSpring Ceremonial is just a month away and weneed your help! Ask your Masonic friends andneighbors to join you in the greatest fraternity inNorth America and I bet they will “thank you.”

So why is a car’s windshield so large and therear view mirror is so small? Because our past isnot as important as our future.

So, look ahead and move on.Stay healthy and remember those who are not!

A very busy time for all! I am in the middle ofYearbook completion, membership, and several

other projects and am looking for a break soon! Sandysays I’m too old for the pace I’m keeping but so far, noproblem! I still power walk three miles each morningand all the joints are working!

We are looking forward to a visit from our son soonand we’ll break then.

I was honored to represent you as guest speaker atNoble Bob Werners’ (Banjo Band) Sunrise RotaryClub. They were a great group and very interested inwhat we Shriners are and do. I gave them the fullprogram of who, what, why, when, where and howand I think we made a few new friends. Our temple

has a lot of great PR materials so I made a folder foreach Rotarian along with membership materials in-cluding our new membership pocket wallet. Maybewe will find a candidate or two in the group. I alsotook materials of Daughters of the Nile and LadiesOriental Shrine as there are several women membersin the Rotary group. These, too, were very well re-ceived. Maybe they also will have some interestedcallers. I guess I did okay! They didn’t boo or throwrolls at me!!

As an aside, I hadn’t done any public speaking forour Brotherhood for several years and I really en-

joyed it! If you are desperate to fill a speakers slot inany of your other memberships, give me a call!

If you didn’t make the Rusty Mason Night, youmissed a wonderful review of all of our Masonicritual. As usual, our Past Masters did a great job andall participants went away with a renewed aware-ness and appreciation of our Craft.

Spring is on the way and our outings and picnicswill be starting up. Make sure you join us at the besttemple in Shrinedom for fun and fellowship. Bring afriend!

Our membership wallet that I distributed iscirculating throughout our area. I carry a couple at alltimes and they are well received by all. I even passedthem to interested spectators at the Shrine BowlGame! Do you have one? If so, give it to a friend whoshould be a Shriner and invite him to join us! Needmore or want one? See me at Sahib!

I would be remiss in my credits if I didn’t recognizeAssistant Rabban Rocky Kearney and Lady Wendyfor the superb job they did for the East/West Shrinegame. They coordinated the pick up and transporta-tion of all players and coaches from the airport to thehotel and returned them to their planes at the close ofthe week! It was a great job of scheduling and organi-zation. They have already been appointed by Impe-rial to do the job next year. Couple this with our bustrip and tailgate party they arranged and you have asuper feat! Sandy and I, along with many other Sahibfolks, volunteered to help and had a wonderful timemeeting and greeting the players as they come in.

They brought great credit to themselves and toSahib by their actions; a sincere tip of the Fez tothem!

Remember - Membership is our #2 job! Ourmotto: each one gets one! Replace yourself!

Enough for now, if I can help you in any way, giveme a call. (941) 488-4363. I’ll see you at the temple.

There are so many things going on here at Sahiband hardly enough time or resources to take

part in or enjoy all of them. But isn’t it great to havethis great facility readily available for us, our friendsand neighbors? Whether it is for our meetings, eat-

ing, entertainment of all kinds, or just good fellow-ship, it’s all right here at Sahib. And compared tooutside restaurants, nightclubs and theaters the priceis not unreasonable. I know there is room for im-provement but I mention these things because we

Hospital Days in 2012by Tim Kinchla, Co-Chairman Hospital Days, [email protected]

Circusby Kenneth Shipley, Circus Chairman, [email protected]

The Circus is coming! The Circus is coming! I can’tsay it enough. The excitement is building to a

feverish pitch. Since last month, there have been afew changes in our venue. The property at FruitvilleRoad and I-75 is not workable according to the pro-ducer. The cows now occupying the space have beentoo well fed and the result is a health situation thatcannot be cleaned enough for “our kids.” We will beback at the Fraternal Order of Police lot across CircusBlvd from the Shrine. This works very well as theClowns can use the back of the Sahara Lounge for“Clown Alley” and all of us can have access to indoorplumbing. We will have the portables for the Circusattendees.

This month you will be getting your special dis-count vouchers in the mail. These aren’t actual tick-

ets because we don’t know which show you would liketo attend. Instead, you may exchange them at theShrine or if you send your payment in, you mayrequest to pick up your tickets at the box office at theCircus. Either way, your support for this major fund-raiser for the Shrine is greatly needed.

I thank all of those that have responded to theCircus Dad and Circus Mom campaign to allow about1400 schoolchildren to attend the Circus at no chargeto them. It is not too late to get listed on the page ofhonor. Contact the Circus office.

As we presented last month, we need your help inpromoting the Circus by getting groups to attend andby selling ads for the program book. This is an oppor-tunity to help your club or unit, help the Shrine, andhave some fun.

Well Hospital Days are now behind us and unof-ficially, it seems that Sahib has raised roughly

$23,000, at this moment. There are a couple of groups/units that have not reported in at this writing. Kudosto all that participated!

Many collectors expressed real pleasure in meet-ing the public and we have heard things that werevery positive, not only with their involvement, butalso the response from the general public. Numerousreports were received from nobles and their ladiesregarding stories that were shared by many donorsabout their children, grandchildren, nieces and neph-

ews that had be treated at our Shriners Hospitals forChildren and how those patients were healed, giventhe opportunity to walk and had their facial deformi-ties repaired. Many nobles and their ladies found outthat it is okay to bring a chair for your scheduled timeat “Publix.”

A number of participating nobles expressed to me,“we collected more money that we did last year and ifwe had had a second site, who knows how much thepublic would have given us.” This was GREAT!

Final accounting will be by the end of the month.Watch for your next Reporter.

don’t always appreciate all the amenities and ser-vices we have here at Sahib. We are fortunate indeedthat our leadership has managed to keep our doorsopen and that we can honestly say support to ourShriners Hospitals for Children has been unwaver-ing. But help is needed on an ongoing basis and we arein a good position to provide some of that help if we allwork together.

In other Reporter articles, you can find a numberof ways to support your unit, Sahib and our hospitals.A few that come to mind are:

Circus Mom & Dad program: Participation inthis program in recent years has been pitiful. Supportof this program helps fill the circus tent with childrenevery year. It is truly a wonder to see those seatsfilled with all the wide-eyed children. Hopefully someof you may have some ideas to rejuvenate this pro-gram. Talk to the Circus chairman or bring yourthoughts to the next Unit Council meeting.

Circus Ads: You can help the Circus program andyour unit by selling these ads. If all units made a

concerted effort, this could be a highly successfulproject.

Reporter Ads: Read the February Reporter editor’snotes to learn how your unit and Sahib can benefit.

Sarasota County Fair: This may be the biggestopportunity this year to make money for your units, enjoy the comradery, interact with the public, visitthe attractions, enjoy some tempting foodstuffs, andhelp out your unit or club financially and all the whileyou’ll have some fun. The work is easy (you can sitmost of the time) and your lady can sign up to workwith or without you, as desired. Shifts are 2.5, 4.5,5.5, and 6.5 hours in duration. Sign up for as few or asmany shifts as you like. See schedule openings at<http://sahibshrine.org/2012countyfairsched.pdf>. The SahibThe SahibThe SahibThe SahibThe SahibConcert BandConcert BandConcert BandConcert BandConcert Band

Wow, that’s all I can say about this past month.Even though you are reading this in March, it is

written at the end of January. My first month as yourtreasurer has been a massive learning experience. Not so much on the accounting or financial picture, but about the Sahib Shrine as a whole. I thought itmight be interesting for you to know and helpful forour fraternity as you realize the facts.

First fact is that our budget to operate our Shrineis getting close to a million bucks. While budgets aremerely estimates for the future, your Divan has put alot of time and research into the figures and they havebeen close in the past. Where some areas fell short ofthe objectives last year, (circus, unit donations, Shrinefundraisers and hospital transportation days), oth-ers were able to exceed their goals (Bingo and restau-rant/bar). In the final run, it was good stewardship byall that kept us afloat for the year. We must continueto turn off lights in vacant rooms, turn down heat andair conditioning where possible, conserve supplies, maintain property and equipment and care for ourbuilding as if it were our own home. It is!

Secondly, our building is thirty years old. That’slike two hundred and ten in dog years. Seriously, thismeans that we have to prepare for major replace-ments and repairs in the future. Our building fundhas fallen short in the past year as the Divan did agreat job of bringing the appearance of the Shrine

back to where we can all be proud. We no longer havethe “Camel Herder Unit” that gave of their time andeffort to do a lot of this work in the past. It meansanother expenditure.

Thirdly, our dues only cover about one tenth of ourbudget. Think about your home, or your place ofworship, and the impact of such a low percentage ofoperating capital coming from your salary or giving. You would need to have a garage sale every weekendjust to stay afloat. Soon you would run out of stuff tosell and then the wolves come hunting. I hope you cansee the importance of the fundraisers we use to try tobridge the gap. I ask you to visit our restaurant for ameal, participate in a picnic, enjoy the food andfellowship of the “birthday/ anniversary” dinner dance, attend one of the many special shows and dinners, orjust drop by and have a chat over lunch with yourbrother nobles.

Lastly, for now, remember the mission of our greatfraternity is for the kids. This past month we had ourHospital Days. Our biggest budget shortfall last yearwas the transportation expenses versus revenue. SomeShrine clubs or units schedule several “Hospital Days”campaigns through the year. Suggest this at yournext club meeting.

May the coming of spring bring you all good healthand happiness. Support your Blue Lodge.

More questions on religion and Masonry. Thequestion of Morals and Dogma brings up an

important point.Anti-Masonic writers are forever “discovering”

something they find shocking in Albert Pike’s book, largely because they don’t understand what kind ofbook it is. Pike was attempting the almost impossibletask of surveying and condensing the whole history ofhuman thought in philosophy into one volume. Hewrites about the things which were believed in an-cient Egypt. China, Persia—all over the world. It’seasy to take a paragraph out of context - as one writerdoes with Pike’s comment about the ancient Egyptianbelief in Osiris - and then insist that Masons teachand believe that all good comes from Osiris. But ahistory lesson is not a statement of theology.

Some of the anti-Masonic writers seem almost todeliberately twist things to make them say what theywant. As an example, the same writer takes a passagein which Pike is contrasting the immortality of thesoul with the temporary nature of earthly things. Toillustrate the impermanence of the body as opposedto the soul, Pike notes that, when we die, our bodiesresolve again into the earth. The minerals of which itwas composed may scatter far. Those minerals maybe picked up again by the roots of plants, grown intofood, and be eaten by other men. This, the anti-Masonic writer suggests, is pagan Masonic commun-ion—eating the dead! A simple illustration isdestroyed into a cannibal feast (to be continued in theApril 2012 issue)

Do you know who Adoniram was? The nameAdoniram in Hebrew means, “The Lord has ex-

alted.” Who was this man? Adoniram was the son ofAbda and lived during the Tenth Century B. C. Thefirst reference to him is found in 2nd Samuel 20: 24,when King David appointed him the receiver of taxes. He was also responsible for organizing and superin-tending the forced labor for the royal building pro-grams. He continued in this position under KingSolomon seven years later.

Masonic tradition, centered around the buildingof King Solomon’s Temple, places Adoniram in aninfluential position. In 1st Kings 5:14, it is statedthat Solomon had a work force of 30,000 from theIsraelites and that he sent them in groups of 10,000a month to work on Mt. Lebanon and he placedAdoniram over these men as their superintendent.Based on this passage it has been deduced thatAdoniram was the architect of the Temple. There is agroup who believes that Hiram Abif had this office, but still believes Adoniram had an important role inthe construction of the Temple.

In our Scottish Rite degrees we see that during theconstruction of the Temple Adoniram was appointedto take Hiram Abif’s place following his death.Adoniram’s actions throughout the degrees representthe finest example of fidelity and honor. He wasbelieved to have been the first to receive the degree ofMaster Architect and, with the superior knowledgeand skill gained, was well suited to replace HiramAbif.

Adoniram remained faithful through the years ofKing Solomon’s reign and into the reign of Rehoboamwhile continuing in the same position. When theIsraelites revolted due to the oppression of the re-gime, Adoniram was stoned to death while doing hisjob of collecting taxes for the king.

To find out more about Adoniram look at the 4th,5th, 8th, 12th, 13th and 22nd degrees or the followingBible passages : 2nd Samuel 20:24, 1st Kings 4:16,5:14, 12” 18-19, 2nd Chronicles 10:18.

Remember the Scottish Rite meeting on March 12at 7:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. for asuggested donation of $9. Scottish Rite Reunion isscheduled for Saturday May 12 and Saturday May 19.Let’s get those petitions in.

Nyla Temple No. 152Daughters of the Nileby Diane Nourse, Queen, [email protected]

This is the last article I will be writing for theReporter as Queen of Nyla Temple. It has been a

wonderful year with many memories; all Ladies ofthe Household made it so.

We have had good sessions, a successful trip toSupreme Session in Tampa, and time to enjoy thespecial lessons we learn each month when we haveour ceremonials.

The members of Sahib are to be congratulated forsupporting us whenever they could. You were gra-cious to attend the installation of Supreme Officers inTampa, the social we had in August in Venice and thebanquet when the Supreme Queen paid us a visit inJanuary. You are behind us and we appreciate it.

We put a Million Dollar plaque on the wall atShriners’ Hospital for Children in Tampa. Pleaselook for it on your next visit.

We look forward to Nyla Temple succeeding in thefuture with the prospect of several new princesses.Anyone with relationships to a Mason or a Shriner iseligible. We look forward to hearing from you so youcan join our temple.

Best of luck to those who will lead in the future. We have a new queen who will be elected in March;and will succeed to the throne. Keep Nyla Templegrowing.

Periodically, I will be submitting news columns tothe Sahib Reporter to help keep our nobles up to

date on our Shriners Hospital for Children activities.Again, this past year has been very busy. During2011, our volunteer Roadrunners transported 385new patients and parents to and from our hospitalwhich included 16 patientswho were flown to other Shri-ner Hospitals for specializedcare in Boston, Philadelphia,Cincinnati, Chicago,Galveston, Houston and St.Louis. The Sahib Shrine ser-vices patients who reside inSarasota, Manatee, Hardeeand Desoto counties. During2011, there were 1627 clini-cal appointments for our pa-tients at the Tampa ShrinerHospitals. Total surgeriesthis past year were 64.

We often receive praisefrom the patients and theirfamilies on the quality of ser-vice we are able to provide. One such letter (to the right)was received from one of ourpatient’s father.

Comments such as thisletter gives us “strong sup-port and energy” for doingour volunteer work for thechildren who require themedical care provided by theShriners Hospitals.

This newsletter was written prior to our HospitalDays collections February 2-4 and we hope it was abig success. We are in dire need to replenish the“Transportation Fund” to help us continue road andair transportation for our hospital patients.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® Cheer On East-West Shrine Game® TeamsAll Services Provided Regardless of the Patients’ Ability to Pay

Top college football players from across the country kicked off their week of festivities by visiting patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Tampa on Sunday, January 15, 2012. The East-West Shrine Game Player Visit was the first event of the week leading up to the 87th East-West Shrine Game on Saturday, January 21, 2012 in St. Petersburg, Fla. This event allowed the players and coaches of the game to experience first-hand what the East-West Shrine Game is all about: helping the patients of Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

The players and coaches arrived at the hospital on buses that were escorted by the Florida Associate of Shrine Motor Corps and Widows Sons motorcycle groups. When they entered the hospital, the Board of Governors for the Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Tampa led the players through the Fishbowl while, patients, staff and volunteers cheered for them. Members of the Armwood High School Marching Band and Buccaneers cheerleaders also encouraged the players, creating a lively pep rally like atmosphere.

Patient Ambassador Ben Carpenter also spoke to provide inspiration to the players and further illustrate the purpose of the game along with the coaches and members of our Shrine leadership.

Players and coaches had the opportunity to interact with patients. They participated in a number of different activities including basketball, dancing, face painting, corn toss, golf and arts and crafts. Patients also were able to pose with players for pictures and receive autographs on donated footballs.

The East-West Shrine Game Player Visit was a significant event for all that had the opportunity to attend. From the players to the patients to the volunteers, each individual played a part in ensuring the success of the event and its purpose of illustrating the meaning that the East-West Shrine Game is more than just a game.

Golf Cart HerdersChamber of Commerce Breakfast at Sahibby Malcolm H. Van Dyke II, Chief Golf Carts Herder, [email protected]

Friday, February 10 dawned cool and crisp with allthe lights on at Sahib and balloons outside on the

front portico driveway at 5:30 a.m.The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce chose

to use the Sahib meeting and food capabilities for theirfirst meeting of 2012. Seating inside the main meetingroom was stunningly decorated for a cut-off maximumattendance figure of 430 attendees. The atrium wasfully decorated and the outside registration tables weredecorated with balloons and smiling registrars. TheProvost Guard provided much needed traffic controland the King Pins and Aides and Greeters were every-where doing what they do best.

By personal request, the Potentate asked if he couldhave two golf carts for pickup and return of the guests.John Yoder and I were kept busy driving many folksboth into the building for a 7:00 a.m. breakfast and backto their vehicles after their meeting. As most attendeescame by themselves with one person per vehicle, our210 parking spaces were soon maxed out. As Lake Sahib

was bone dry, the Provost Guard jammed packed andstuffed Lake Sahib with cars and trucks (see photo onpage 9.) Then... we parked cars on both sides of CircusBlvd. When that filled up, we started row after row afterrow of vehicles on the Fraternal Order of Police grassyplaying field across the street, where the circus will go.Finally... after almost filling the entire grassy area, vehicles stopped coming.

WHY you ask? Because Restaurant Manager GeneBorkowski, the kitchen staff and our great wait staffoperated a self-serve buffet style, 470 meals in onehour! Killer great breakfast food? Sorry you couldn’t bethere, but yes... to die for. All the Sahib support teamate very well afterwards—Thank You!

The Chamber staff and attendees were full of com-pliments. It blew their minds that they were beinghand-delivered to our front door in executive golf carts.

Another example of the Sahib golf cart fleet beingutilized as it should be.
