Dear Readers,It’s that time of year when the weather starts to warm up and all those little DIY jobs that never quite got done over the winter months start to become more pressing. The garden is probably in need of some attention too and if you’re anything like me, spare time is something you don’t have much of. So where can you fi nd some friendly, local tradesmen eager to wave their magic wand and put everything right in a jiffy. Look no further! This magazine is packed with businesses who’d love to help.

Do you have any news or views you’d like published either in the magazine or online? Is there a subject you’d like to write about that would be of interest to our readers? We love community stories so start writing and tell us about your life/job/hobbies/cat/dog/fi sh, anything!

Have a fantastic March!

Best wishes,

What’s white, has two protruding humps and goes like the clappers? No, not Katie Price, silly, it’s this of

course, the Porsche Boxster Spyder. Sorry, that really was uncalled for, especially when we’re in the presence of an all-time great… because that’s exactly what the Boxster Spyder is.At fi rst some people might fi nd it hard to work out what the point of it is. Porsche has stripped it of most niceties – like door handles – and it does without an electric roof, replaced instead by a rudimentary piece of canvas and cling fi lm stapled to the bodywork. Even Porsche admits only around 100 will fi nd homes in the UK each year. But then you get behind the wheel and everything instantly makes sense. This Porsche is a driver’s dream and on the incredible Welsh roads where we tested the Boxster it was a sheer delight. At fi rst it feels twitchy, on edge, alive. The steering has so much feel, it’s light and wriggles in your hands – and that takes some time to get used to. But settle in, tune into the sensations and feedback this stunning Spyder is transmitting and it rewards you with a drive of your life.Power comes in linear and fast. That 3.4-litre, 320bhp unit is a gem and, coupled with the Spyder diet, produces impressive performance fi gures. The sprint to 60mph is dispatched in 5.1 seconds and the way it translates that power

into forward momentum so easily will have you beaming from ear to ear. What makes the Spyder so good is the fact it can utilise every single one of its 320 horses, effi ciently and effectively. Higher-powered sports cars will out-drag it on the straights, but point the Porsche towards some twisties and it’ll keep up with pretty much anything. We just wish it sounded more potent – the sports exhaust option is a must. However, it’s not just about what’s under that shapely hood. This car looks positively stunning too. In the ice white paintwork our test car came in, it was a crowd-gatherer and those two rear humps behind the headrests have a distinct air of Carrera GT about them.We even managed to nail taking that ‘roof’ off. Yes, it is more complicated than an electric set-up, but with practise we got the process down to about two minutes. Fair enough that’s not exactly quick – and you wouldn’t want to get caught in a downpour – but the hood is where Porsche has achieved most of the weight saving. The biggest problem we can see with this Porsche though is the name. The ‘Boxster’ part in its title just doesn’t fi t. This car is good enough – and unique enough – to have earned its own name altogether. It’s a brilliant piece of engineering and one of the all-time Porsche greats – why then, hasn’t the maker christened it properly?

N ow that the wedding season is just around the corner and many couples are eagerly anticipating

their big day, attention turns to fi nding that perfect dress. Fortunately there is more choice than ever on offer to beguile brides-to-be - from High Street bargains to high-end fashion.Retailers are becoming increasingly aware of the market demands for ‘designer style’ at high street prices and many new, more affordable ranges, are emerging.Although for most of us the romantic idyll of the celebrity marriage on sun-kissed foreign shores is as distant as the Caribbean beach on which it takes place, with so many different gowns and accessories available, you’ll be sure to look just as good as they do.Whether you have had your dress designed in your mind for years or you are only just starting to look for style inspiration, the fantastic array of classic, cutting edge and modern designs

infi ltrating high street boutiques means that fi nding your dream dress is far more likely to become a reality. For many this comes as a welcome alternative to commissioning a bespoke creation with a more hefty price tag.As vintage chic is an enormous trend at the moment and is showing no sign of going away, many top designers are taking inspiration from bygone eras by producing magnifi cent gowns

Weddingswith extreme embellishments. Ian Stuart’s latest collection - which is typically theatrical, playful and utterly romantic - capitalises on this with truly magical results.Taking ideas from this means that you can revel in a wide choice of sumptuous fabrics, layers of luscious lace and fantastic appliqué work - not to mention heavenly embroidery - when designing the bodice.Embracing full-on vintage style and purchasing an authentic period dress, or adapting a family piece, can not only be a cost effective measure for the more budget aware, but can have spectacular results, as you are guaranteed to have a totally unique gown which will certainly not look embarrassingly dated in years to come.(Continued on page 12)

Adaptations can easily provide a way for you to stamp your own style and personality on any vintage piece. Using classic make-up and hair styling can help to achieve the full period look, but as an alternative, adopting a more modern style can marry two periods together and work exceptionally well. With that in mind, you can carry forward the ideas of ‘something old, something new’, when choosing accessories. A tiara from the 1920s can sit happily alongside contemporary earrings. For those who love modern styles and who would not - even for a minute - entertain the idea of anything other than a sparkling new gown, Vera Wang’s latest collection of creations will suit perfectly. As a designer whose creations have been worn by numerous celebrities over the years, Wang’s wedding dresses have consistently been big news. And the reason for her longevity? Her pieces are classic, elegant and chic. The perfect formula for the modern bride to fall in love with.

And then there’s Frank Usher’s exciting bridal range which is tailored towards the bride-to-be who requires simple, elegant styling. His new ‘Destination Bridal’ collection is ideal for those marrying in an exotic location; but of course, this will work just as well for a summer wedding at home. For a modern dress, with sleek lines and ultra chic style, this new collection is well worth a look.Undoubtedly, the decision of which dress to choose just became harder albeit in a good way,

as being spoilt for choice is never bad. And be reassured: if your budget doesn’t quite stretch to a designer gown, you can still acquire a similar look. The high street always refl ects the catwalk . But for real savings, adapting a vintage gown might just mean that you have enough left over for a honeymoon of your dreams. But all that’s another story.

As many of you will know, I am a member of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee, a commitment that has recently taken me to Afghanistan, where I had the privilege of meeting a number of serving soldiers from this constituency.

I returned home feeling that there are grounds for optimism that the task of transferring responsibility for their own security to the Afghan people is progressing. In the meantime, I have gained a whole new respect and admiration for the contribution of our Armed Forces.

Having a voice on matters of national and international relevance is not a responsibility I take lightly. In the last month or so in parliament, I have also taken the opportunity to speak up on discipline and standards in our schools, preventing poverty in early childhood from becoming a lifelong condition – as well as a whole range of issues that are important to me and to my constituents.

When the problems and experiences that my constituents discuss with me at my advice surgeries and as I go about my constituency visits illuminate wider policy issues, I am always ready to lobby ministers and seek specifi c answers to the questions that affect Salisbury people’s everyday lives.

It is one of the great joys of this job to have the opportunity to get out and about in the constituency, visiting people, places, charities and companies. My constituency diary is always packed – and that is how it should be.

However, once I have shaken hands and departed to my next appointment, it is almost never the end of the story. I am in this job to help people and to use whatever infl uence my position confers to advance their interests and solve their problems. Every meeting and visit I have generates action – be it a letter, a telephone call, a conversation with a minister or a question on the fl oor of the House!

If you have any issues you wish to discuss with me at one of my surgeries, please do not hesitate to contact my offi ce.

When we were little, we thought that by the time we grew up we’d have robots and lasers. We were right, but the lasers and robots aren’t where we thought they would be. Instead of frying our enemies we’re using them to hang pictures, vacuum the dining room and mow the lawn. Today, even our tools are becoming high-tech.

Your local DIY emporium probably has more lasers than Darth Vader’s Death Star. There are laser spirit levels, laser range fi nders, laser tape measures and there are even jigsaws that use lasers to show you where to cut. If you’d rather not spend more than £20 on a spirit level, why not install one on your phone? The free iHandy Carpenter Level for Apple’s iPhone uses your phone’s built-in gyroscope to tell you whether something’s fl at. It isn’t as accurate as a real spirit level, but if you only need a quick guide then you can’t argue with free. Don’t have an iPhone? Spirit Level Pro does the same thing on Google-powered Android phones such as the HTC Desire.

You wouldn’t expect paint companies to make gadgets, but they do: Dulux has the PaintPod, and Hammerite has the MetalMaster. Both promise to make DIY easier. The £69 PaintPod is a closed system that sends just enough paint to the integrated roller, and it automatically cleans itself when you’re fi nished. It works fairly well and vastly reduces the mess most of us make when we’re repainting the house.Hammerite’s MetalMaster isn’t so successful. It’s an electrostatic paint gun that costs around £50 and promises to take the drudgery out of painting metal such as furniture, railings and so on. However, a quick scan of review sites such as reviewcentre.com paints a fairly sad picture, with customers complaining that it takes longer than a paintbrush and isn’t particularly well made.

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you crossed a toolbox and a transformer, the Power8 Workshop is the answer: its lurid lime green case transforms into a work bench and includes halogen lighting, a drill, a screwdriver, a circular saw and a jigsaw. There’s also an integrated fast charger to keep the tools’ batteries topped up. At £289.90 it’s on the pricey side, but there’s no doubt it offers convenience, easy transportation and easy storage for your stuff.

Fancy something even smaller? Leatherman’s innovative multi-tools are in toolboxes,

glove boxes and suitcases around the planet, and the

range starts at around £30 for the smaller models. If money’s

no object the £99 Charge TTi combines stainless steel blades

with titanium handles, and it feels sharp enough to split atoms. It cuts, clips, strips, saws, screws, crimps and fi les, and yet the whole thing is small enough to fi t in a trouser pocket.

The trouble with multi-tools is that they still expect you to do the work. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get robots to do the DIY for you? We’re not quite there yet, but there are plenty of robots to help around the house. Robot vacuum cleaners such as iRobot’s Roomba a n d Samsung’s Navibot have

dropped below the £400 mark - although like Daleks,

they don’t do stairs - and if you really don’t like mowing the lawn Husquvarna’s robot lawnmower, the

Automower, starts at around £1,099.

SELLING YOUR PROPERTYHow long will the conveyancing take?If the property is empty and the buyer does not require a mortgage, a sale or purchase can all be completed in a few days but this is very unusual. It is more likely that a mortgage will be required meaning it will usually take 4-6 weeks to exchange contracts and then another 2-4 weeks between exchange of contracts and completion making a total of 6-10 weeks from start to fi nish. We always do all that we can to progress your transaction as quickly as possible but we cannot offer any guarantees about this and you should not believe anyone else that does! How soon do I need to pay any money? If you are purchasing a property, your solicitor will normally ask you for some moneys on account (typically between £100 and £200) up front to cover any search fees that will be paid out on your behalf. The balance of the price and the solicitors costs etc will be payable shortly before completion unless you are borrowing more than 90% of the purchase price in which case it may be required prior to exchange of contracts. If you are just selling you won’t need to pay any money in advance. The costs and agents fees will be paid out from the sale proceeds on completion before any balance is sent to you.

BOOKS TO GIVE TO MUM ON MOTHER’S DAYMother’s Day is almost upon us, and what better way to say ‘thank you’ than Mother’s Day is almost upon us, and what better way to say ‘thank you’ than with the thoughtful gift of a book. We’ve put together a few of the best to give with the thoughtful gift of a book. We’ve put together a few of the best to give Mum on her special day.Mum on her special day.

Dear Mum, From You to Me concept by Neil Coxon Ever wondered what your mum was like as a child or how your parents met? Here’s something totally different for Mother’s Day which will answer all those unanswered questions. Not so much reading material than a little project, this lovely hardback book is packed full with leading questions such as: How did you feel when you found out you were pregnant with me? What was the first piece of music you bought? And what one piece of advice would you offer me? Here is a chance to record your

mum’s memories and reveal the book within, something which she’ll enjoy creating which will be treasured by all her loved ones.

The Happiness Project by Gretchen Craft Rubin Gretchen had everything to be happy for; a successful career, two lovely children and a happy marriage – but she wasn’t satisfied, so she decided to do something about it. Starting on January 1st, the author takes a proactive approach to improving her life – from sleeping more and whinging less, to developing herself spiritually, educationally and philosophically. Easy to read and thought-provoking, ‘The Happiness Project’ is charming, funny and truly inspirational.

Chicken Soup for the Mother’s Soul by Marci Shimoff, Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, & Jennifer Read Hawthorne From the best selling series comes a collection of heart-warming, true stories recollecting the defining moments of motherhood - from birth and adoption stories to miracle tales and how it feels to watch them fly the nest and become parents of their own. This book guarantees tears and laughter, for anyone who has been a mother.

How Not to Be The Perfect Mother by Libby Purves A refreshing take on the usual parenting guide, Radio 4’s Libby Purves has created a humorous and matter-of-fact manual to help with the ups and downs of motherhood. Ideal for any new(ish) mum, this book is a light-hearted and realistic tome of advice

which cuts corners, bends rules, and doesn’t leave the reader feeling like they’ve done a less-than-perfect job. Full of entertaining stories, tips and advice, this is a must-have for any mum who wants less pressure and more enjoyment out of being a parent.

NEW RELEASE Mum’s know best: Hairy Bikers’ Family Cookbook by Dave Myers & Si King Following on from the hugely successful TV series, this new release features 112 fantastic recipes which have been passed down through the generations, and are now tried and tested for any mum (or dad) who fancies cooking up a storm. Full of simple ingredients and easy recipes which deliver delicious results, this will go down well with all the family.

The Lady who was Beautiful Inside by Edward Monkton A lovely little picture book from the creator of those wonderfully witty (and slightly mad) greetings cards. With a simple story about a lady whose radiance turns winter into spring and causes flowers to spring up in her footsteps – this is sweet and stylish, and with the usual hand written lettering and line drawings, it’s ideal for little ones to give on Mother’s Day.

1001 Little Beauty Miracles by Esme Floyd This beauty bible is jam packed with hints and tips for any lady in need of some TLC. From covering blemishes and making thin hair look thick to dealing with unmentionables such as facial hair, the pages are packed with practical and simple advice.Release your Mum’s inner glamour-puss with this fantastic book - she’ll be sure to thank you for it!

Great prices on return nights out

4, 5, 6, 7, 8 seaters available

How to make extra cash in your spare timeIt’s always nice to have a bit of extra

cash set aside each month for savings, emergencies, or just a little treat now

and then. Here, we’ve listed eight easy ways to put some money back in your pocket, without doing overtime.

1) EbayStart by selling any unnecessary clutter around the house, then see if any neighbours or friends have anything which they don’t need and offer to list it for them for a small commission. If you don’t mind doing the leg work, you could be on to a nice little earner whilst helping your friends out too!

2) HobbiesDo you make great cakes? Enjoy crafting your own greetings cards? Have a passion for photography? You can make money by hiring out your services. Birthday cakes, wedding invitations and family portraits can be a great way to do what you love and get paid for it.

3) Mystery shoppingShopping in disguise and providing feedback on the quality of service and customer care of retailers is a great way to earn vouchers, discounts or cash.

4) BabysittingIt’s not just a job for teenagers. Get paid to sit in somebody’s house and watch television, read or surf the net and earn around £8

an hour, which can mount up on dates like Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve. Houses and pets need sitting too when their owners are on holiday, so there’s plenty of demand!

5) Party planningThere are lots of companies who need representatives to host parties which endorse their products, such as Pampered Chef and Ann Summers (not for the faint hearted!). Check there isn’t already a representative in your area when you enquire.

6) Count votesRegister with your council’s election offi ce and earn a nice sum when the next election comes around.

7) Life modellingFeeling brave? If you don’t mind standing still in your birthday suit for an hour or so, this is a great way of increasing your bank balance and your confi dence! Sign up to a reputable agency and enquire at local art colleges. All shapes and sizes are welcome, all you need is the ability to hold a pose.

8) Get onlineBlogging, reviewing or becoming an online researcher can bring in the pennies, which soon mount up. If you’re into photography, many sites will take photographs and you’ll receive royalties each time they are used.
