LAGNIAPPE Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time, March 2, 2014

Dear Friends, This weekend I will be going to St Joseph the Worker Parish in Pierre Part, LA, to help them prepare and dedicate their newly renovated Church building. St. Joseph in Pierre Part was my first assignment as an associate pastor and I spent 4 ½ happy years learning how to be a priest from some very patient teachers! I am very happy for them to have this renovation which will serve them well over the years to come. The pastor at St. Joseph is Fr. Al Davidson, who spent a summer here as a seminarian intern. Time flies. Here we are looking at Lent coming down the pike. As you consider your Lenten penance, keep in mind that it should cost you to keep this penance. This practice should move you toward the Lord. It should not be unrealistic. It should not make you painful to be around. The point of the Lenten penance or sacrifice is to open you before the Lord, so that you will be receptive of the Lord’s grace. This coming weekend is the final weekend to sign up after Masses for the Christ Renews His Parish Women’s Retreat which will be held the weekend of March 15th-16th. It’s an opportunity that comes along once a year in the parish. I encourage both the men and women of the parish to attend a yearly retreat or day of prayer to keep oneself centered in right relationship with the Lord. The weekly Lenten Friday Night Dinners in Fr. Engels Hall begin this coming Friday. These will be offered every Friday evening of Lent, supported and staffed by one of the parish organizations. This coming Sunday, the first Sunday of Lent, is the Sunday when the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion is celebrated. This ritual is usually celebrated at St. Joseph Cathedral. However, because of the construction going on at the Cathedral campus, the Rite is being moved this year to Sacred Heart. When the Diocese was founded, Sacred Heart was the temporary Cathedral Church until the renovations at the Cathedral was completed. The Rite of Election is for the Unbaptized, in which Bishop Muench echoes God’s call to the Unbaptized and “Elects” them to the Table of the Eucharist. The Call to Continuing Conversion is for the already Baptized who seek Eucharist and Confirmation. The Bishop will urge them to continue on their path of conversion to Christ through the

Church. It’s a lovely experience to have adults and children from throughout the diocese gathered into two services, 2:00pm and 5:30pm, and celebrate this milestone in their initiation journey. Our parish will send our catechumens and candidates to the Cathedral from the 9:30am Mass next Sunday. Thanks to all who have returned your 2014 Financial Stewardship forms during this past month of February. Your support and prayers for the parish are deeply appreciated for the sake of ministry. Have a happy holiday and I look forward to seeing you Ash Wednesday…… Love,

We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one:

To the family of Brian Richoux. To the family of Ethan Rider.

ST JEAN VIANNEY CAPITAL CAMPAIGN “Our Time to Pray, Our Time to Give”

A MATCHING GIFT There are parishioners who work for businesses which will sometimes MATCH a charitable donation to a Church or School. Is your employer one of those people? If so, your gift to the Capital Campaign could be matched. Sometimes, the employer will match a gift to a SCHOOL but not a CHURCH. Regardless of the case, we can help you find out if your employer will match your gift. Talk to Fr. Tom or Debbie Daigle at the parish office, 753.7950 so we can help you help us.

St. Jean Vianney Social Responsibility News

Newspaper and White Paper Recycling Has Ended The green and red recycling bins that we have used since 1988 for our parish’s newspaper and white paper recycling program have been picked up, and we are no longer recycling here on the church property. You are encouraged to recycle your paper through your neighborhood curbside recycling bins. We appreciate the many years of recycling support many of you participated in to the benefit of our parish’s Social Responsibility Ministry.
