On March 8, we celebrated the nominees and winners of the fifth an-nual RVH Film Festival at The Vickie Awards ceremony. This year’s red carpet ceremony was complete with popcorn, paparazzi and yes, even hotdogs! This year’s seven film entries highlighted how teams use our val-ues of Work Together, Respect All, Think Big, Own It and Care in their daily lives on the job at RVH. Entries this year were both from

first-time participants and from teams who have submitted in previous years. A special thank you to all the teams who submitted in 2018:

Once again, the RVH Film Festival invited local elementary and high schools in the region to participate. At RVH we love being green! On Monday April 16, all members of TEAM RVH are invited to join Janice Skot, RVH President and CEO, for our own Earth Day campus clean up. Once again we will partner with our neighbours at Georgian College and will be joined by college President and CEO, Mary-Lynn West-Moynes to kick off the event. Together we will clean up the common space between the two campuses along the Friendship Trail. The event will start at 11:30 a.m. at our Friendship Benches (located to the left of the helipad). Again this year will be a guest appearance by our own Earth Day mascot, Dr. Green, who will be handing out spot prizes. In addition, there will be a draw for one of three ‘green’ gift bas-kets at the end of the day.

To keep your energy levels up during this event we will be hosting a BBQ at the Friendship Benches – and for a small donation of a loonie – participants can purchase a hotdog. All proceeds will be donated to the Simcoe Muskoka Re-gional Child and Youth Mental Health Program. Dr. Green will also be travelling to our offsite locations to de-liver treats and prizes to our staff in honour of their green activi-ties. Gloves and garbage bags are provided. Please join us to cel-ebrate Earth Day and clean up the campus. This event will hap-pen rain or shine so please dress accordingly.

RVH volunteers honoured for being community role models Two dedicated RVH Volunteers, Pat Ummels (pictured left) and Peggy Bazin (right) were recognized by MPP Ann Hoggarth for exceptional work and leadership within the community to improve the lives of girls and women in Ontario through the 2018 Leading Women – Building Communities Recognition Program. Ummels has been an active volunteer with our health centre since October 1993, annually contributing approximately 500 volunteer hours and to date, she has accumulated over 4,600 volunteer hours. Bazin has been an active RVH volunteer in our health centre since June 2005, annually contributing approximately 500 volunteer hours and accumulating over 7,500 volunteer hours to-date. Congratulations to these dedicated volunteers for going above and beyond in their service to RVH.

Environmental Services (EVS) team members Judy Gurr and Maybel Silk-Cocson, joined Rosalyn Rowe (left), manager EVS, for the first week of trialing the new EVS tracker in the Emergency department. With the help of Clinical Informatics staff Nata-

sha Ringhofer and Zann Harasewich approximately 15 EVS housekeeping aides are being trained on the use of the new tracker – available on any PC in the department. This new system allows the aides to see in real-time which rooms require cleaning, assign themselves to the room, and then update the room status when the cleaning is complete. This system improves communication in the Emergency department as nursing staff can, with one click of a button, see the status of rooms and move patients into them. It eliminates the overhead housekeeping pages and im-proves wait times for patients. “It’s all about patient satisfaction for us and this new system definitely improves the patient experience for those people

waiting in our Emergency department,” says Rowe. “We are trialing this new system and hope to go live in a week.”

Never fear! our EVS team is keeping things on track

RVH is planning for the future RVH has taken the first step in its long-range plan to expand healthcare for residents of Innisfil, Bradford West Gwillimbury and south Barrie. RVH recently took part in a ground-breaking ceremony for the 45,000 square foot Rizzardo Health and Wellness Centre at Yonge St. and Innisfil Beach Rd. next to the Innisfil Recrea-tion Complex. When the centre opens in early-2019, RVH will provide a variety of outpatient services in 5,000 square feet of leased space, including:

Cardiac diagnostics such as stress tests, ECG and ECHO

Adult medical clinics, including COPD, asthma, diabe-tes chiropody and geriatric services

Child and youth treatment clinics for well-baby follow-up, asthma, autism, speech and hearing

Cancer pre-treatment consultations Providing outpatient services in Innisfil is part of RVH’s bold plan to meet the rapidly-growing healthcare needs in south Simcoe County. But it is just the first step. With no room left to build on our current 40-acre site, RVH has launched a comprehensive capital planning exercise which takes a graduated approach to developing facilities and ser-vices for the next 20 years and beyond. Planning includes de-velopment of a state-of-the-art south campus, as well as deter-mining how to best use the space still available within our cur-rent Georgian Drive facility. “RVH already provides exceptional specialized and inpatient care at its Georgian Drive facility. However, we need to bring outpatient, urgent care and additional care space closer to the growing communities in south Barrie, Innisfil and Bradford West Gwillimbury,” says RVH President and CEO Janice Skot. “Recognizing that charting RVH’s course for the future is a complex and lengthy process that will take a decade or more, we need to start planning now.” Data collection and analysis, as well as significant consulta-tion, has already begun to identify healthcare needs, service gaps and opportunities. Meanwhile, a Site Selection Commit-tee, which includes two community representatives, is working

with technical expert consultants to develop a transparent, fair and consultative process to select a site based on very clear, detailed criteria and broad community engagement. In fact, engagement with TEAM RVH, patients, the public and our partners will be critical to the success of this planning process. There will be many opportunities for stakeholders to get in-formation and share their feedback with RVH, such as commu-nity conversations and listening sessions, smaller focus group discussions, a dedicated website, online surveys and social media. Many of you recently completed a survey to help us design a plan to engage our external stakeholders regarding the loca-tion of and services provided in a south campus. Thank you for taking the time to share such valuable feedback. The results

will be shared with you soon as we Plan our future. Together.

Blood Bank team in Lab Services shows off new equipment

Improved workflow and faster turn around times. That’s what Heather McMahon (pictured back row, second from left), Charge Technologist Blood Transfusion, says about the two new state-of-the-art analyzers now installed in RVH’s Lab Services department. “We went live with the new equipment on February 27,” says McMahon. “Not only does it automatically process the blood tests through Meditech, one of the biggest features is that we can continually load the analyzer with samples and don’t have to wait for a single batch to finish before adding new samples. It’s cut down on the amount of time we have to wait to get results in.” The new analyzers are replacing the two older pieces of equipment that were previously purchased in 2004 and 2007.

Sonic Coalition (pictured above with members of the Barrie Rotaract

Club) takes home bragging rights at the 2018 Battle of the Bands in

support of Radio for Cardiology. Band members include Chris Adams,

Gerry Pilon, Dr. Brad Dibble, Jim Fairhead, Paul Larche and Mayor

Jeff Lehman. Drawing on the considerable musical talents of physi-

cians from RVH and Barrie’s financial services, Battle of the Bands is

one of the most celebrated live musical events of the year.

Organizational structure changes To ensure RVH optimizes resources and appropriately re-sponds to shifting strategic priorities and challenges, a number of changes to the Organizational Chart were introduced. Facility Support Services, (including Environmental Ser-vices, Patient Food Services, and Building Operations) led by Rob Purdy, Operations Director, Facilities Support Ser-vices, will report to Darrell Sewell, Vice President Facilities and Chief Human Resources Officer. This change will allow Ben Petersen, Vice President Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer to focus on two strategic initiatives – Master Planning/Programming for the north and proposed south cam-pus and upgrading our regional IT system. As RVH continues to face surging volumes and record-high ALC rates, Dana Naylor will take on the new role of Chief of Patient Flow for the next year. She will continue to report to Treva McCumber, Vice President Patient Programs and Chief Nursing Executive and will lead our internal and external patient flow activities. This includes working closely with home and community care, nursing and retirement homes, hospital partners and other community services. Internally, Dana will continue to lead Discharge Planning and Bed Allocation and will work with all clinical leaders to ensure optimization of the Medworxx utilization tool while leading initiatives to improve patient flow and achieve our strategic goal of “no patients in the hallway”. Reporting to Dana will be Lillian Morrison who will continue to manage Surge 1, Central Staffing, Bed Allocation, Hospital Service Leaders (HSL), Nursing Resource Unit and Patient Watch. While Dana focuses on patient flow, Tracey Fletcher will become interim Operations Director of the Medicine program. Tracey will report to Treva McCumber and have oversight of the inpatient medicine units with a heightened focus on the ambulatory medicine clinics. With Tracey in this interim role, Christine Durand from our Patient and Family Experience Office will assume the interim role of Manager, Medicine inpatient unit. The revised organizational chart is available on the RVH Intranet under the Departments tab or via this link.

Karin Poole is the successful

candidate for the role of Manager of

Clinical Practice & Education and

Infection Prevention & Control

where she has been interim in this

position since July 2017. Karin has

been with Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre

since 1997 and has been a Clinical Nurse Educator since 2011

covering SMRCP, Respiratory Unit, DI, Cancer Palliative, Medi-

cine Treatment Clinic and Nursing Reserve Unit throughout her

time as a clinical educator.
