THIS WEEKEND’S THIRD SCRUTINY

OF THE ELECT

This weekend we celebrate the third of three

“Scrutinies” offered on the part of those who are

preparing for their baptism and the rites of initiation

of this upcoming Easter vigil (the “Elect”). The

purpose of each of the scrutinies is “to uncover,

then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the

hearts of the Elect” and “to bring out, then

strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good”

(RCIA, 141). The true pastoral sense of this two-

fold act of uncovering and strengthening is designed

to deliver the Elect from the power of sin and Satan,

to protect them against temptation, and to give them

strength in Christ. At their core the scrutinies are

not about the sinfulness of the Elect but about the

overwhelming grace of God in Christ. The liturgy

of the scrutinies includes not only prayers and

blessings on behalf of the Elect in support of these

goals, but also an exorcism which is not a fear-laden

bout with Satan but a grace-filled encounter with

the healing power of the Spirit.

The attentive will notice that at the mass

which includes a scrutiny, the Profession of Faith is

omitted, as the Elect are not yet ready to fully

participate in the statement of our Church’s creed,

which they will do for the first time at the Easter

vigil.

We ask that all in our congregation join in

prayer for our Elect and offer their personal support

and congratulations to all who are completing their

preparation for the rites of initiation at this Easter

vigil, in order to deepen their resolve to hold fast to

Christ and participate fully in the life of our church.

Monday, March 21st, 2016 is Reconciliation Monday

Once again, the Archdiocese of New York is joining the Dioceses of Brooklyn and the Diocese of Rockville Center in offering the Sacrament in all parishes. Confessions at St. Joseph’s will start after Novena & from 4pm to 8pm. We encouraged all Catholics to take advantage of this wonderful sacrament of Christ's forgiveness.

ST JOSEPH’S SOCIAL MINISTRY… Our

monthly collection of canned and non-perishable

goods will be taken up at all the Masses for St.

Joseph’s Social Ministry. Please help us to assist

others who are in need. On behalf of St. Joseph’s

Social Ministry, we also wish to thank you for your

donation of groceries last month. Through your

generosity, we are able to help the less fortunate and

needy in our community.

HOLY THURSDAY March 24, 2016 VISIT TO SEVEN LOCAL CHURCHES

A Pamphlet Guide will be made available on the Fifth Sunday of Lent and/or Palm Sunday for those who wish to participate in the venerable custom of "visiting seven churches" on Maundy (Holy) Thursday, March 24, 2016. Church Mass time, location of Altar of Repose, and church closing time are listed in the pamphlet. Prayer verses, and the Pope's prayer intentions are also included. Please note carefully the Churches that are participating; also, some Mass times, and church closing times have changed from Holy Thursday 2016. Participants normally set out after attending the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper in their home parish; they continue on the self-directed pilgrimage to six more churches to visit their especially decorated Altar of Repose.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY The Catholic Church has declared the first Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. The Church

has added a plenary indulgence to it. A plenary indulgence is the complete remission of sin and punishment. To obtain this indulgence one has to go to confession, receive Holy Communion and recite some prayers for the intention of the Pope. Come join us this Sunday, April 3, 2016 at 3:00 P.M. for the Divine Mercy service at St.

Joseph's Church. There will be the blessing of the Divine Mercy Picture, Divine Mercy Chaplet sung by Fr. Frank and Mass. Confession will be from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

CHURCH CLEANING Come one, come all. We need and want you! There will be a CHURCH CLEAN-UP on Tuesday, March 15th, 2016 after the 9:00am Mass. Something for everyone, if the day is nice we need outside work done, so if you like to rake and sweep, there is something for you. Inside work to be done – dusting, vacuuming, polishing brass and silver, cleaning and waxing pews. Just bring a bucket, vacuum cleaner or whatever tools you think you might need and we will supply the cleaning products. Let’s be proud of St. Joseph’s and make it ready for Easter. Many hands make lighter work!!!
