This past Tuesday evening our PreK – 2nd grade teachers hosted a Family Literacy Night at Mason. As parents YOU are the most important teachers in your child’s lives. The goal of the Literacy Night was to support families in helping their children learn to love reading and develop communication skills, all while growing their passion for learning! It was heartwarming to see the families who turned out for this event and a special thank you goes out to all our wonderful staff for putting together this successful evening.
Report cards will be issued on Thursday, March 27th. Please be sure to ask your students for their report card and any accompanying information. Honor Roll assemblies will be: 3rd Grade – Wednesday, April 2nd at 9:30am, 4th Grade – Tuesday, April 1st at 9:20am and 5th Grade – Thursday, April 3rd at 10am. Kindergarten and School Registration Information for 2014-2015
The St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) will hold pre-registration for children entering kindergarten and
students new to St. Johns County and/or public schools on Thursday, April 17th, from 9am-1pm; and Tuesday,
and May 6th, from 1pm-5pm.
To be eligible for public kindergarten in St. Johns County, children must be 5 years old on or before September
1st and must reside in St. Johns County. To register for first grade, children must be 6 years old on or before September 1st and have documentation of successful
completion of kindergarten.
Parents must register children at the school where they are zoned for the 2014-2015 school year. Three proofs of residency must be provided such as a current
mortgage statement, lease or rent agreement and two other forms of residency documentation such as a current electric bill, car registration and/or driver’s li-
cense. Additional information on residency and guardianship as well as a link to the Attendance Zone Locator can be found on the website at www.stjohns.k12.fl.us
under “Featured Links.”
Florida law requires any student entering a Florida school for the first time to show proof of required immunizations documented on the HRS Form 680. Proof of a
physical examination that has been obtained within one year prior to enrollment in school is also required. Physical examinations can be performed by either a
private physician or by the county health department.
Voluntary Pre-kindergarten (VPK) pre-registration will also take place at select schools on the above dates and times. Children applying for the VPK program must
be 4 years old on or before September 1st. The SJCSD offers full day VPK at the following locations: The Webster School, John A. Crookshank, Cunningham

al information on the SJCSD VPK program, please contact Early Childhood Services at 547-4899.
Students can be registered during the spring and summer for the 2014-2015 school year, however; parents are encouraged to register during the designated dates
above so that schools can adequately prepare for the new school year. Additional information regarding registration and school attendance zones may be obtained
from the Student Services Office at 547-7598.
Nurse’s Station…
Studies show that 80-90% of children are not getting the water their growing bodies need! Please send your manatee in with a reusable water bottle. Maintaining proper hydration is essential for digestion, proper bowel function,
flushing toxins and fighting infection.
Thanks—Nurse Johna

What is AVID Elementary and What is AVID Secondary?
AVID Elementary—The AVID elementary program is a school-wide approach that is
available to all elementary students in grades and classes designated by the school. The
teachers emphasize the teaching of organizational skills, note taking and critical thinking
skills. College expectations are also provided for all students within the school.
AVID Secondary—As students transition into middle school and high school, a cohort of students are selected, via
application to participate in the AVID elective class. AVID strategies may be used school-wide, but specific classes are
offered to provide academic support to students who are selected for the elective classes.
The AVID elective class is designed to help students in the AVID cohort attain these goals; the class is a challenging, yet
supportive environment where students can acquire strategies to help them fulfill their academic potential preparing
them for college readiness and success. Writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading (WICOR) form the
foundation of the AVID curriculum. This gives students the skills they need to succeed in college-preparatory classes,
like Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate.
Students are selected based on a number of qualifications including:
Motivation to achieve
2.0 – 3.5 GPA or “students in the middle”
Academically struggling and highest achieving students are not typically in the AVID elective
*Fifth grade students who have had an opportunity to participate in AVID elementary may or may not be selected to
participate in the AVID elective in secondary schools. It is based on individual need.

TIDE: Every morning students have a focused instruction session called TIDE where they work in specific areas of need or enrichment. We need help to assist students with these activities. Volunteers are needed to dedicate 30 minutes every morning from 8:45am-9:15am. Training is provided.
MEDIA CENTER: The Media center needs an eager bookworm to volunteer just 30 minutes to an hour once a week laminating, cutting materials, restocking books, etc.
VOLUNTEER WORK DAYS: Come help our teachers. We have two remaining Volunteer Workdays this year on April 9th and May 12th, from 9:15am-1:30pm. Come in anytime throughout the day and stay as long as you can. You will need to sign in at the front office and be approved for school access. If you have any questions, you can email Erin Powell at [email protected]
MANATEE MALL: When we catch our Manatees being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe we REWARD them with “Manatee Dollars,” and they are then given the chance to spend their reward money at our Manatee Mall. Every Friday we need volunteers to help us pick up items, man the booth, and organize this fun event. If you would like to volunteer, please contact us at 547-8440.
BOOK ROUNDUP 2014: We are going to need some volunteers on May 12th to help sort books for the summer reading program. Please call Cindy Grotz at 904 547-8440 if you can help with this fun project.
