Dear Parishioners and Friends of St Patrick-St Anthony and St Genevieve
May the Lord give you peace I hope your journey is going well This season is a great
opportunity to deepen your relationship and understanding of the presence of God We are blessed to have this gift each year We are in the year of Luke and have been attentive to the Gospel texts from Luke Last week we heard the parable of the fig tree and of course as we listen to parables we need to be attentive to the unexpected Perhaps the unexpected is that the grace of God is present more strongly in the gardener than the owner of the field Here is an image of God who cultivates and fertilizes in contrast to the owner who cuts down when he does not get what he feels he deserves This week we will hear the story of the Prodigal ldquoFatherrdquo whose love for his two sons is overwhelming Another image that we find in Luke is the prevalence of the Holy Spirit Both in the Gospel and in the Acts of the Apostles Luke presents us with ways of recognizing this dynamism of God
Curiously as I was listening to an interview with a Cardinal who is in Rome for the gathering of the Cardinals when asked what people could do as we look at the upcoming election he responded ldquoprayrdquo I thought that was a good idea but then he reframed the response noting that the Holy Spirit is very responsive to prayer From my perspective it is not the responsiveness of the Holy Spirit that is in question Our very prayer arises from the impetus of Godrsquos Spirit I suspect the greater need for responsiveness is on the part of the voters We pray that they be attentive to the energy insight and wisdom of Godrsquos Spirit May that responsiveness open the doors to new possibility unrealized imaginings a welcome to those who have been driven away and an increase in our understanding of how we each embody ndash incarnate - the presence of God If we imagine our own embodiment of Godrsquos presence we will have greater respect for what it is to be a human person and the grace of diversity that exists among us Yes please pray Let us hope and imagine that the gardener is elected that the one who is overwhelmed by love has a ring placed on his finger and the mantle of responsibility on his back
When asked what they were looking for in a new pope some of our Confirmation Candidates responded peace in the Middle East care for the less fortunate all over the world an improved standard of living through wage and fair trade laws an end to violence care for those who are alone medical help for countries in need including vaccinations for diseases the right to basic human needs everlasting love accept same sex marriage - love is love a more open-minded church an end to racism and starvation freedom clean water world peace food and water to countries in need peace and prosperity for all While I doubt that the Cardinals will have this list on hand as they consider the various candidates and I admit that I did not censor the list nor is it in the power of any one person to accomplish all that is noted these are the hopes and dreams of the next generation Perhaps we hear from the voices of these young people the desire manifest in Godrsquos Spirit
As we seek an end to violence noted more than once within the dreams of our youth I invite you to consider a gathering and talk given by M W Edelman at The University of Hartford on March 14

The stewardship message in the parable of the Prodigal Son is
that it is never too late to become a good steward Blessed is

blessed too is the prodigal son who had to lose all he had in
order to understand the value of what hersquod been given
LIVING STEWARDSHIP

ldquoTHESE ARE THE HIDDEN SAYINGS THAT THE LIVING JESUS SPOKErdquo Apocryphal Gospels and Early Christian Experience Saturdays 130mdash345 pm April 13 and 27 May 4 and 18 June 15 and 29 (please note date change from original listing) The so-called lsquohiddenrsquo (apocryphal) gospels have recently been featured in some popular novel and movie plots where they stand at the center of convoluted conspiracy theories and murderous intrigue But when one reads the actual texts it is rather difficult to understand why These gospels although often overlooked by the general reading public have long been known read and studied by specialists Ordinary Christians in the Middle Ages were so intimately familiar with several of them that knowledge of these gospels is required today for properly interpreting some of their greatest works of art and literature These gospels narrated the words and deeds of Jesus and those around him and they articulated a variety of theologies and spiritualities During these six sessions we will read and discuss key texts from four apocryphal gospels the Proto-Gospel (Protevangelium) of James the Gospel of Peter the Coptic Gospel of Thomas and the Coptic Gospel of Mary Before the first session participants should procure a copy of Bart D Ehrman and Zlatko Plese The Apocryphal Gospels Texts and Translations (New York Oxford University Press 2011) ISBN 978-0-19-973210-4 In preparation for the first session participants should read the section on the Proto-Gospel of James (Apocryphal Gospels pp 31-71) Presenter Paul Sansone Suggested Offering $5000 because of the continuing nature of this course we request payment in full at time of registration To discuss an alternative payment schedule please contact Pat Curtis at 860-756-4034 x113 It will be helpful to have 20 participants for this course - encourage a friend to register with you
