MarcelloLo Giudice
Preface2 3
There is a territory of aesthetic philosophy known as the sublime.
It is an exotic territory, one that replaces analytical definition with an urge to see beyond human powers of thought. The sublime speaks to a region of perception that is situated between the profoundly subjective and the undeniable collective. It rests in the instant between beauty and terror: standing at the edge of cliff on a tempestuous day; the collision of melting ice caps into the black ocean below.
To experience the sublime is, undeniably, an integral component of intellectual and emotional
awareness. Its territory is one that eludes definition for the sake of pure feeling; the origin of what William Wordsworth referred to as a visionary power, suggesting that which is beyond cognitive and descriptive forces.
Somewhere along this ambivalent spectrum lie the sedimentary works of Marcello Lo Giudice. Structured by thick layers of pigment and coating, buried and reemerging under various phases of scratching, abrasions, removals and levels, Marcello Lo Giudice’s canvases give shape to the matter and inconsistent bodies of hue and material. A graduate of geology, Marcello Lo Giudice’s works bring attention to the cyclical alliance between man and matter. Their colours, often monochromatic in nature, encompass the muddy and the vibrant, the dark and flat, the embellished and illuminated. Like peering out into an unprotected patch of barren land, onto a surface exposed to and victim of the elements of
humanity, Marcello Lo Giudice’s paintings express that which nature has contained for herself.
Engrained in an increasingly global disposition has been an attempt to reclaim a unique identity, an undertaking that manifests itself most viscerally in Contemporary Art. Rather than pursue this quest, Marcello Lo Giudice’s telluric canvases speak to the universal connection between the human being and the energy of creation. Combining his knowledge of the Earth’s organic processes with a sympathetic passion for geological substances, the artist’s energetic, gestural paintings speak to our existence as an imposition on and direct influence of the changing shape of our planet.
