From the Headmaster
Celebrating being MaristAs we come towards the end of the Marist Bicentennial year it is worth reflecting on the people who have worked so hard to keep St Marcellinrsquos vision alive over the past 200 years From the opening of that very first school at La Valla in the south of France in 1817 there have been generations of Marist Brothers and lay colleagues across the globe who have worked tirelessly to bring the message of the Gospels in a particular Marian way to countless young people
Here in our own context we at Marcellin College are very conscious of the significant role this College has played as part of that history ndash we have been on this site for 94 years which is almost half of the history of Marist education Here too the vision has been kept alive by those hard working individuals both past and present who have contributed so much
Marist Schools Australia (MSA) held its Annual Mass and Dinner last Friday night and one of the things that happens each year is that schools can nominate a person from their community for an award This is a prestigious award as is indicated by the title Appreciation for Outstanding Contribution to Marist Education This year we successfully nominated Deputy Headmaster Paul Daley for this award
I had the honour of reading the citation for Paul at the Dinner The below summary of that citation gives you a sense of the wonderful work done by Mr Daley over many years
Paul Daley is a greatly respected much admired and highly esteemed educator who has been of service to Catholic schools spanning 25 years His extensive experience in Marist schools has become the cornerstone of his spiritual formation educational philosophy and practice Paul is a witness to the vision of St Marcellin Champagnat and has played a critical role in the development of young people into becoming lsquogood Christians and good citizensrsquo He has a Champagnat heart an empathy for the strugglers and a love of work He is committed to attending to the needs and development of all boys in the College community and has been instrumental in mentoring and building confidence and capacity in young teachers at Marcellin College
Another opportunity that arose on the night was the coming together of a number of former Headmasters of the college all of whom Mr Daley has worked for at various stages of his career This was a poignant moment for me as well to be in the company of such great men on whose leadership the College has been built up over recent years It was a wonderful occasion to celebrate being Marist

Our Indigenous Year 7-8 students attended the AIME Outreach Day at the University of Sydney in Week 1 this term The focus of the day was on the theme of kindness The boysrsquo AIME tutors were there as well as special guest tutors from all over the world It was a day of fun games and activities good food and building community with ATSI students from all over Sydney Our Indigenous Year 9-11 students had their AIME Outreach Day the following week The focus of their day was on kindling The boys were greeted with a gift at the door from Triple J of a t-shirt which they were to wear for the day The morning session focused on language and we were very lucky to have the Tribal Warriors bring with them some primary school children to sing play games and teach us some language We learned words from the local Wangal clan The children participate in a Tribal Warriors program based on the work of linguist Jeremy Steele and historian Vincent Smith who together have identified more than 10 000 words of Wangal language It was amazing to hear the children have a conversation in language and to see how Tribal Warriors are revitalising language into the Redfern community
The day continued with some guest speakers sharing their journey including actor and past MCR student Luke Carroll sharing stories of his acting in TV shows like Home and Away films such as Australian Rules and his experiences for the last 7 years on Playschool
The day ended with the boys being presented with their AIME hoodie and certificates It was a very proud moment for the boys
Weekly AIME tutoring sessions conclude in week 5 for 2017 It has been a rewarding program for the boys and we appreciate all the efforts of Carly Walsh and her hard working volunteers who tutor the boys for 2 hours each week

ATSI

To our ParentsThank you to all the wonderful parents who gave up their time on both dates of the Walkathon We greatly appreciate the arrangements that you made with your own life work and family to make yourself available to us for this fun-filled day We are aware that these plans often take weeks (or months) to organise Apologies to those parents who made these alternative plans for the original date that was then cancelled
Similarly great thanks is given to all the parents who were able at such short notice to join us last Friday Your prompt reply to my request for help made re-organisation uncomplicated
Thank you for your generous time and support of our Walkathon We look forward to seeing you again next year

The Music Corner
On Sunday 29 October Marcellin College senior Music students Jaysen Largent and Archie Steggall along with Class of 2017 graduate Paul Leandre Escorrido volunteered their time and talents to perform at a fundraiser supporting Diabetes Australia
Organised at a residential house in the Inner West suburb of Concord 65 guests sat comfortably in the beautifully decorated backyard and enjoyed a high tea styled afternoon with music entertainment and raffle prizes
The boys took it in turn to play background music as the guests walked in creating a light and hearty ambience to start the afternoon This was then followed by a combination of formalities and official performances from the boys which included the songs lsquoWhat a wonderful worldrsquo lsquoHalorsquo by Beyonceacute and lsquoValeriersquo by Amy Winehouse It is safe to say that they were an absolute hit and really added to the overall lovely afternoon Well done boys

From The Sports Coordinator
MCC SportRounds 2 and 3 saw MCR take on local rivals Champagnat College and De La Salle Bankstown in the MCC Summer Competition The season is starting to take shape and with four rounds to go we still have a number of teams who are yet to be beaten
A special mention to our Tennis squad who have come on in leaps and bounds this year to remain undefeated going into what appears to be their toughest fixtures in Lewisham (Round 4) and North Shore (Round 5)
Our four Basketball teams also remain unbeaten as they march towards their goal of repeating last seasonrsquos clean sweep of the competition
Best of luck to all our teams in the upcoming round against CBHS Lewisham
