March/April 2010 The Duster Page 8

This was the firstSentimental Tour I attendedand it was great. So manythings to do and see in oneweek. Each night I thought Iwas ready to go home but inthe morning I was ready togo again. I had heard of theTexas hill country and hadgone to a couple of thevenues before but lookedforward to going again andseeing everything else. Themotel in Kerrville, Texas did take a little getting usedto but by the end of the first day we had it down patand it had great accommodations for everyone.

First thing was to go to the hospitality room toget our packets and buy 50/50 and raffle tickets. TheRoad Relics were well prepared and the packets wereawesome. Each day was divided by daily tabs withdriving instructions and maps. There were 95 carsand close to 200 people registered from 20 states.

On Sunday night we were treated a terrificbuffet dinner and for the entertainment we had a 3piece group call “The Part of the Problem”. Theywere very entertaining and at one point they call on 3people in the audience for a yodeling contest. Then itwas off to the room to finish unpacking and rest upfor the week ahead.

Monday morning after a great breakfast, buffet style we had our first Driver’s Briefing.Everyone was ready to depart the motel at 8:30am forthe Longhorns and Cow Chip Tour. After drivingonly about 18 miles we stopped at the Sunset BaptistChurch for a pit stop and cookies and coffee. Then itwas onto the YO Ranch. This ranch was founded byCaptain Charles Schreiner in 1880 and is still run byhis decedents today. We took turns to ride a busaround this 40,000 acre ranch and saw many exoticanimals besides the regular cows and horses and longhorn steers. When we got back there was a “cow chiptossing” contest. Then during our BBQ lunch wewere entertained by a country-western singer. YOranch owner presented awards to 3 cars he and hisfamily liked the most – 1947 Ford Woodie StationWagon belonging to Richard & Hope Cushman; 1958Edsel belonging to George & Bonnie Dunn; 1932Cadillac of John Sweeny. Then the awards went to

the winners of the cow chip toss. These plaques had a hugeshellacked cow patty mounted ona Texas shaped board. Thiswrapped up with a photo shoot atthe YO front gate. From here wetook a scenic drive along theGuadalupe River with stopsscheduled at the Atwell Museumand the James Avery jewelryfactory.

Tuesday morning afteranother big buffet breakfast and

another Driver’s Briefing we were off again this timeat 8am. We were warned to have plenty of gas as wewere going to travel about 130 miles round trip. Thisday was a scenery day. Our first stop, after 39 miles, was the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. This isan enormous pink granite rock. Some members didclimb the rock and it was very windy down belowand much worse on the rock. This is the largest pinkgranite monadnock in the United States. Our nextstop was Luckenbach, Texas We had been here on apast Thanksgiving tour but we still went in to make afew purchases and walked around outside. Fromthere we made a stop that was not on this tour. Westopped at the fastest armadillo in Texas. We had tomake some purchases here plus get a few bottlesetched with the Sentimental Tour on it. Then it wasoff to Willie’s BBQ at the Full Moon Inn. From herewe went to Torre di Pietra Vineyard. If you bought aticket when you picked up your packed on Sundayyou could go to the wine tasting. From here we wentto the Wildseed Farm. After walking around thestore and making our purchases we sat & had icecream. Then it was back to the motel.

Wednesday after breakfast and our Driver’sBriefing it was off again. We had a morning comfortstop at Street Dreams. This was a collection of about100 collector cars. Today is the day to use ourpassports. It was a lot of fun getting the pagesstamped in the different stores in the Germansettlement of Fredericksburg and lunch was on ourown at a choice of many German Restaurants. Ofcourse most of us didn’t just get our passport stampedwe did make a purchase or two or three. Our last stopof the day was the Nimitz Museum. Again we hadgone here on that Thanksgiving Tour but there haveContinue on Page 9

been many additions and changes since then. Needto go back and spend more time there. To seeeverything, I think we would have to send at least 4or 5 hours and we didn’t have that much time. After afull day here we went back to our motel. We weretold in advance we would have an orchestra tonightfor our entertainment and to dress the part of the1940’s. We had a great buffet dinner at the motelbanquet room before the music started. A lot of usdid dress the part and the orchestra was calledSentimental Journey. And that’s just what theyprovided. A sentimental journey back to the 40’s and50’s with their music. You can tell that some of thecouples have been dancing together for a long timeand like the Big Band sound and music. Theorchestra, singing and dancing was a sight to be seen. When we came in we turned in our passports to bechecked for our stamps. Those completing themission had their names put in a hat and three werepulled for gift baskets. 1st place went to earl & JudyBeauchamp, 2nd place went to Joe & Sandy Stout and3rd place went to Ken & Shirley Kenewell.

Thursday morning, again after a great buffetbreakfast and or daily Driver’s Briefing, we were offagain. Today’s tour was named the Yellow RoseTour and we pulled out about 8:15am. This promisedto include some very long and steep hills, up anddown and very sharp turns. All week we have seenmany animals along our trips but this day a deerjumped a fence and ran right in front of our car.Someone later told us if we were sleeping this surelywoke us up. (indeed) We did see many wild flowersbut because of the harsh winter this year, the flowerswere just starting to bloom and were not in theirusual abundance. Along the way we came upon theCowboy Boot Fence. The story goes that a poorfamily with many children lived on this land. Theywould not accept charity so folks began hangingboots and shoes on the fence. If the family couldwear them, they took them. If not, they were left formore unfortunate persons. Folks still hang boots andshoes there today. Our 1st stop of the day was theLone Star Motorcycle Museum. This is a collectionof over 50 bikes and related memorabilia. It is acollection of machines from around the world datingfrom the 1910’s to modern. Then it was on to Leakey(pronounced Lay-key) for our lunch stop at the FrioCanyon Restaurant. Leakey is sometimes referred toas “the Swiss Alps of Texas” the elevations rangingfrom 1,500 to 2,400 feet with deep canyons cut by 3

different rivers. Then we moseyed down throughUtopia to the Apple Store at Medina to get some ofthe apple ice cream with apple butter topping that VicDonnell told us about in the morning briefing. Hewas so right, it’s to die for. Then we walked thoughthe shop and again bought a couple of things. Whenwe were ready, we drove the 25 or so miles back toour motel.

Friday morning after another great BIGbreakfast buffet and our Driver’s Briefing we wereoff one more time. It’s hard to believe that this weekis almost over. Today’s tour is titled “CowboyCapital and Camels Tour”. After driving so otherback road for about 26 miles, our first stop was inBandera at the First Baptist Church for cookies andcoffee and pitt stop then we walked to the FrontierTimes Museum to see relics of the Old West. Thishad some very interesting artifacts and relics of theOld West. From here we went downtown Banderafrom more shopping and sightseeing. The SilverDollar is had the oldest continuously operatinghonky-tonk, there is an Antique Mall, a General Storewith a working old fashioned soda fountain and alarge selection of souvenirs. Then it was on to ourlunch stop, Spinelli’s Vistro Restaurant. Here we hada delicious Italian buffet. After lunch we went to theAgricultural Heritage Center & Museum. From herenext we went to the Waring Genera Store. This storealso has a dancehall in back. Then in Comfort there isa Historic District and has more than 100 structuresdating from the 1800’s. There are many old buildingsfascinating shops and antique shops in a small 1 or 2block area. On our ride back to the motel we passedby the “Treue der Union” monument (1866). This“Loyal to the Union” monument was erected over thecommon grave of 36 pioneers who died while fleeingtowards Mexico attempting to join Union Forces. We also stopped at the Camp Verde General Store totake a picture of the camel sculpture and walk aroundin the store. Then it was back to the motel to getready for the closing banquet.

Friday night banquet was a plate up with twochoices. I had chicken and it was GREAT. We had24 members representing the Louisiana Region. TheCentral Texas Region put on a terrific tour and wehad a wonderful time. This was my first National tourbut I promise it will not be my last. We hated to saygoodbye to our old and new friends. But it’shomeward bound in the morningThanks again Road Relics!!!
