I ask all members and motorcycles to exercise due diligence this year as it per-
tains to motorcyclist rights. Should anyone reading this become aware of any-
thing that might be a negative situation for motorcyclist, please speak up. Bring
the situation to my attention, do not assume someone else is going to do some-
thing about it or that it won’t make any difference.
The town of Lake Lure did not consider, and eventually modify their noise ordi-
nance as it pertains to motorcycles, specifically regarding aftermarket exhaust
systems and allowable decibel levels until it was brought to their attention that
motorcyclists considered the ordinance as originally passed unfair.
While proud of the revisal of Lake Lure’s noise ordinance, all motorcyclists must
understand how much damage an excessively loud exhaust can do to the repu-
tation of the entire motorcycling community. It is the most frequent complaint by
those who do not ride motorcycles.
We have confirmation from the City that we will once again receive our "May is
Motorcycle Awareness Month" Proclamation. The Proclamation will be pre-
sented April 24th at 5:00 downtown at City Hall. All motorcyclists are encour-
aged to attend, get there by 4:30 to ensure you can get a seat. We would love
to fill the room with bikers. A special thanks is due CBA/ABATE Life Member
Roger Williams for arranging this for us.
This being an election year, should you find yourself in contact with a candidate
for office, let them know you are a motorcycle enthusiast. It could make a differ-
ence, when that candidate is elected when they have to decide how to vote on a
bill that could impact our motorcycling community. Speaking of elections, this
year’s annual “Lobby Day” will be May 23rd
. The goal is to send as many motor-
cyclists to Raleigh as possible to meet
with our representatives and impress upon
them the solidarity of the motorcycling
community. Please consider taking the
day go to travel with us to Raleigh, let me
if you are interested. Ride safe, Roger
PONDERING FROM THE PRESIDENT
ED WOODY , PRESIDENT CBA BUNCOMBE COUNTY
Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE of Buncombe County Page 3
I would like to thank every-one who came out for our March meeting. We had the largest attendance that I can remember. This shows how much support we have for our chapter. I appreciate the level of confidence that you have placed in me, as president, for the remainder of this year. Please welcome James Buckner as our new Vice-President. I have faith that James and I, and the rest of our fine officers will make a great team. I wel-come your new ideas and any suggestions that you may have for improvement. Feel free to contact me via phone 828-216-8059 or e-mail [email protected] My goals for the remainder of the year are to work with and support the other chapters, the district and the State. I am in the proc-ess of contacting the other Presidents to open up more communication with our chapter.
I would like to have some rides just for fun and get to know each other better. We also need to continue to work hard on member recruitment, as well as is-sues such as Motorcycle rights, noise and safety. As most of you know, our State is hosting the Meet-ing of The Minds in the Durham area September 20-23 , 2012. This is the first time that it has been held south of the Mason-Dixon line, which is a great honor. The Meeting of the Minds involves motorcycle riders from all over the world. It is a great opportu-nity to brainstorm about various motorcycle issues. We are in process of work-ing on some fundraising ideas in order to send as many members as possi-ble to this important event. If you are interested in helping with the fundraising or attending this event, please let me know. The Chapter is in the mid-dle of updating our e-mail
list; if you are not receiv-ing emails from [email protected] please send your email address to that address. We are also updating the website and newsletter . Please be patient while we work out the glitches in this process. We need volunteers to write articles for the newsletter and someone to be in charge of the website. Please send any articles for either publication to [email protected] We have GREAT mem-bers and officers. Re-member if we don't fight for our rights, who will?
“Let those who ride decide”
Your membership in the CBA/ABATE gives us strength to fight for motor-
cyclists rights. As an organization, the more members we have, the louder
our voice can be heard by our representatives in Raleigh. Since January 24,
we have six new members: Lee Buckner, Terry Crouch, Nancy Crouch,
Kelly Rodriguez, J.C. Slagle, Philip Tranthum and two Junior members.
Any new members after March 23 will be acknowledge in our next newslet-
ter. We also had twenty members renew their membership, which includes
one life time member: Duane Holden. Remember, your membership, and
the memberships of anyone you recruit, gives all of us a more prominent
voice

Billboard Campaign
Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program
Steve Ensley, MSAP Coordinator [email protected]
Our Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Pro-gram (MSAP) is off to an-other good start for the first quarter of 2012. As of March 23
rd we will have
presented our program to about 550 drivers educa-tion students in WNC dur-ing the first 3 months of 2012. This is at the same pace we have taught our classes for the past two years. On Thursday, March 29
th we plan to present the
MSAP in Haywood County at Tuscola High School in Waynesville with members of the Smoky Mountain CBA/ABATE Chapter. This will be our first presentation in Haywood County and will hopefully help get Smoky Mountain’s MSAP program running.
Statewide, there have been some changes in drivers’ education over the past year. With changes in educational funding from this year’s state legislature, one third
of North Carolina’s public school districts have started charging a fee for students to take drivers education. This fee is aver-aging $45 per student across the state. The dis-tricts charging a fee are reporting a 20% reduction in class size as students are not taking the class and waiting until they are 18 and drivers’ education is no longer a requirement at that age for a drivers li-cense in NC.. I would much rather be sharing the road with a rookie cage driver that has taken a driver’s education class than with those drivers that are self taught…....Asheville City and Buncombe County Public Schools are not cur-rently charging any student to take drivers education (that could change). Our average class size here in Buncombe has dropped from 39 to 35 students per class this quarter. My high school students tell me that
the cost of maintaining a car and insurance has low-ered the priority of getting a drivers license for them. Their parents are having trouble paying the in-creased cost for insurance for a beginning driver.
Thanks to CBA members Bob and Dianne at Dianne’s Shop for copy-ing the new DVD that we use to present our MSAP program and to member Roger Williams for arrang-ing to have to have Ashe-ville City Council and the Buncombe County Com-missioners again declare May as Motorcycle Aware-ness Month. See another article in this newsletter concerning our Motorcycle Awareness billboards.
We have selected four motorcycle aware-ness billboard locations for May and June. Look for our Buncombe County CBA billboards in Harley Orange printed with “Start Seeing Motor-cycles” at these locations; Swannanoa on US 70 near Warren Wilson Rd, on Patton Ave. across from K Mart at KFC, in Weaverville on Old Weav-erville Highway near Stephens Upholstery and in South Buncombe on Hwy 191 near the Eaton plant. “Check Them Out”

2012 Daytona Bike Week has passed, known and
considered by many as the rally that begins the
riding season. Those of us involved in biker min-
istry are involved with the motorcycle community
year round and keep our calendars full of local
and national events, but we really don't know
what tomorrow will bring. My wife and I set up a
ministry table during bike week at a popular biker
bar along with other vendors. Our purpose is to
share God's love and speak the truth; Jesus Christ
is our Lord and Savior. You may choose not to
believe in Jesus Christ, we have all been given a
free will to choose what we believe. God did not
create us to be robots and micro manages our
lives. However, there is and will be consequences
for the choices that we make whether they are
good or bad. One day at the table we had a visit
from another biker minister, as we sat and talked
he saw group of guys he knew and went to visit
with them. The following day he returned to table
with very sad news. One of the men he had gone
to talk to was involved in a bike wreck and did
not survive. We all share the lifestyle of riding
motorcycles and none of us get on our bikes with
the intention of never coming back. James 4:14
says " Yet you do not know what your life will be
like tomorrow, you are just a vapor that appears
for a little while then vanishes away." You may
choose to believe that there is no God and no
Savior. I respect your decision as long as you
have come to that conclusion based on your own
research of the facts. But if you do not believe
because that is what someone else told you to
believe, then you have actually put your life and
future in the hands of that someone. If you sin-
cerely look for the truth yourself, it will reveal
itself to you. John 8:32 “and you shall know the
Truth and the Truth will set you free". If you
have questions I can share what the Truth has
done in my life.

The Western District Poker Books are here!!
Larry Bradley-President-Smoky Mountain Chapter CBA
You may be wondering
what this is all about…
What are poker books?
What are the benefits of
buying these books?
Who will benefit from
the sales of these
books? I will try to an-
swer these questions.
The usual way a poker
run is done, is to pay
for a poker hand and
then go to five different
places along a specific
route to draw a card at
each stop, to get a full
hand. This is usually
done on a particular
day and within a speci-
fied time frame.
The Western District
Poker Books are a new
way of doing a “poker
run”. Anyone can buy
a book (each book costs
$10), you can even buy
multiple books if you
like. If multiple books
are bought then only
one book needs to be
signed/stamped and it
will count towards the
other books stamps/
signatures. (Note: only
one book has to be
signed/stamped, you
cannot have different
pages from different
books combined!)
Unlike a traditional
poker run, each book
holder is not required to
follow a specific route
or visit specific places
in any given order. This
is a six month long
event where book hold-
ers can pick and choose
when and where to
make stops! You can
take your time and pick
what stops to go to. A
book holder needs to
visit 25 of the 105 stops,
in order to get a full
hand (5 cards). If you
want to get extra draw
cards, then you get one
extra draw card for
each additional 25 stops
made, so you can get
up to 3 extra draw
cards!
There will be several
prizes: Best hand is
$1000, worst hand is
$300, for the most aces
$300. There will be a
drawing for those who
get the books com-
pletely filled (ie
stamped or signed) to
win $400!! Cards will
be drawn and prizes
given out on the ending
date: October 13, 2012
at the Maggie Valley
Inn and Conference
Center, 70 Soco Road,
Maggie Valley, NC
28751. (Note: the prize
money comes from the
sales of vendor ads in
the poker book)
Now, who benefits
from the sales of the
books? The CBA bene-
fits! For each book sold,
the CBA state board
gets $2, the Western
District gets $3 and the
chapter selling the book
gets $5! A portion of
the funds raised
through the sales of the
poker books will go to-
wards the Meeting of
the Minds.
If anyone is interested
in buying the poker
books please contact
any participating West-
ern District chapter.
Any chapter who
would like to take
books on consignment
contact Bill Starnes,
Western District Coor-
dinator
(no money up front is
required!)

Support the Patriot Guard Riders & Buy American at the Same Time NEW Made in USA T-shirts!
The volunteers who make up the Patriot Guard Riders should be respected by the entire motor-cycling community. These riders attend the funeral services of veterans, carrying the colors and leading the processions. They provide a positive face of motorcyclists to the community. We can support the PGR’s efforts, and help the economy at the same time thanks to these new made in the USA shirts from Bayside. Order these shirts and all your Patriot Rider Guard gear at the Official Patriot Guard Riders store. One hundred percent of the profits made by the PGR store go into the PGR General Fund. The phone number is toll free, 877-359-2811. Thanks go out to George Pittard, member of Patriot Guard Riders and CBA/ABATE Buncombe County for this story. The PGR Store is proud to introduce the new "Same Patriot" T-shirt! These made-in-USA t-shirts have a really cool design that ties together PGR's love for our country with our love for motorcy-cles! An American Revolutionary War soldier atop a horse waving an Revolution-era flag faces a modern-day patriot atop of motorcycle waving our current United States flag, surrounded by the phrase, "Same Patriot...More Horsepower." Beneath the image, the shirt is personalized for PGR, reading "Patriot Guard Riders Est. 2005." These black Bayside t-shirts with beige printing are made in the USA. With such a unique, patriotic design, these shirts are a great conversation starter.
Made In USA Logo T-shirts We also would like to announce that the PGR Store
will now be offering made-in-USA logo t-shirts and long-sleeve t-shirts! These shirts are the same
as the logo t-shirts the store has always carried, but we now have Bayside shirts in stock which are
100% made in USA. These shirts feature the triangle PGR logo over the heart, and you also have
the option to add the larger triangle on the back of the shirt. We offer these shirts in ash, black, or
navy, and the long-sleeve t-shirts also feature the PGR website url down the left sleeve.
