• Max size: ~¼ inch• Feed at night• Hide everywhere• 1 female 500 eggs (1

month to adult)• Eggs are hard to see• Can survive up to a year

without a meal

• Do not transmit human disease (not likemosquitoes)

• Expensive to manage• Most difficult urban pest to manage

– Very common nationwide– Locally became a problem 2010

• Social stigma• Allergic reactions• Lowers morale

Control

13

Joint effort by NMCSD and NEPMU FIVE

Fleet: Managed by NEPMU FIVE• Ship’s medical trained by NEPMU5 to do monthly

inspections• AMAL needs necessary pesticides to control bed bugs

while afloat [Obtain via Open Purchase]

Ashore: Managed by NAVFAC and NMCSD• Complaint-based, facility-requested inspections• Routine inspections not as effective as self-reporting

– NAVFAC treats the room, NMCSD then re-inspects– NMCSD inspects 10% of each BQ’s rooms monthly,

20% quarterly– NAVFAC inspects 10% quarterly with dogs

Awareness and education are key toBed Bug management and prevention

Page 14: Mar 5 nbsd co roundtable breakfast brief

Recommendations

• Report bed bugs to leadership and BEQ managers– Enables fast treatment

– Prevents spread

• Ensure accountability to prevent spread– Bed bugs are hitchhikers

– Launder belongings before moving to a new room / ship

• Educate Sailors at accession points

**Effective management requires vigilance by residentsand all stakeholders for continued success**
