In salute to the fashion featured in our

exhibition, Geoffrey & Carmen: A Memoirin Four Movements, we present Versailles

    73: American Runway Revolution. This

fashion history documentary takes the viewerback to the famed gilded palace in the

early 1970s for the legendary November 28th

fashion face-off that pitted ve American

designers (Anne Klein, Stephen Burrows,Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta and Halston)

against ve French (Yves St. Laurent,

Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre

Cardin, and Emanuel Ungaro). It showcasesthe unforgettable, ultimate upset that came

from when the American designs outshined

the French and forever changed the courseof fashion history with a tour de force of

stunning Black models who sashayed down

the runway, won over the crowd, gaining

newfound respect and recognition, andhelping secure American fashions place on

    the world stage.

Following the screening of the lm, join us

for a stimulating discussion with lmmaker

Deborah Riley Draper, who wrote, produced

    and directed Versailles73. Draper says,

This is an important lm, not only becauseits the story of American designers getting

international attention for the rst time and

kicking a** over the French. But it also hasimportant political overtones, because this

show actually broke the color barrier onthe runways.
