welcomeDear Friend,

We’re so glad you’re interested in making MapStorytelling part of your community, and your

way of contributing your knowledge back to the world. If you choose to get involved, you’ll

be at the forefront of a new movement that we hope will dramatically improve our ability to

understand ourselves, our neighbors, and our history as human beings on planet Earth.

We created MapStory in 2012 in order to better our citizens’ education about the world,

improve public dialogue and debate, and reduce social conict. MapStory empowers a global

user community to organize its knowledge about the world spatially and temporally, and to

commit this knowledge into the global data commons, in perpetuity, as a gift to generations to

come. Perhaps more important, MapStory is an infrastructure for enabling “MapStorytelling” as

a means of communicating important issues to a global audience. The objective is to enable

any student, teacher, practitioner, and citizen on Earth to tap the power of this new mode of

conveying one’s stories, arrayed across geography and as they unfold over time.

MapStory enables users to contribute their knowledge of the world into the global data

commons, creating a cultural resource that the world can learn from, build upon, and share

alike. Based on the lessons learned by analogous projects, MapStory users are asked to

contribute their data via an Open Database License (ODbL), and (geo)graphical representations

of their data via a Creative Commons Share Alike (CC-by-SA) license.

Over time, we expect MapStory to become the convening point where MapStorytellers of all

kinds come to publish their expressions, and to critique each others’ MapStories, leading toa consistently accumulating and improving global body of knowledge about global dynamics,

worldwide, over the course of history.

With any new project, there are both great risks and rewards. In this packet you’ll learn how

to get involved as MapStorytellers – either on your own as an individual or as a full-edged

MapStory Community Chapter. Whatever path you choose, I ask that you be patient as we all

work together to improve on this nascent endeavor, and to be ambitious in the projects you

take on and the impact you seek.

skills, make connections with each other and professionals, receive recognition on

MapStory.org, and more.

Bring MapStorytellers together ...

Incorporate MapStorytelling into an existing community group ...

MapStorytelling can be a powerful tool for organizations to conduct research, promote

To be recognized, your group must:

• Have a founding team with at least three

adult members over the age of 18

• Provide a cover letter that details why you

want to start this group, what you perceive

its mission to be, and some early project

goals you have in mind

• Sign and submit our Memorandum of

Agreement, along with other attachments

you choose to provide

about the activities of chapters on other communities

2. Send a quick email to [email protected] to let us know you’re interested. A MapStory Foundation staff

member will then reply to discuss further details.

3. Read the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) on the next page, and complete it and submit it per the instructions

in bold, along with your Cover Letter and other attachments. Also review the Community Ethics and Terms of Service

posted at wiki.mapstory.org.

4. Upon receipt of the MoA, a MapStory Foundation staff member will contact your Point of Contact to solidify your

participation and help you get started.

To STAY recognized, your group must:

• Maintain a current Point of Contact for the

MapStory Foundation at all times

• Complete a biennial reection survey

The MapStory Foundation, a 501c3 non-prot educational organization based in the United States, and

(ORGANIZATION), a community organization based in (MUNICIPALITY/STATE/COUNTRY), enter into this

Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) on (DATE).

The purpose of this MoA is to recognize (ORGANIZATION) as a Community Chapter within the MapStory

Foundation’s global network. As a recognized Community Chapter, (ORGANIZATION) declares that it has completed

the following:

• Reviewed any local, state, and national laws that might affect the Chapter’s operation and committed to adhere

to them.

• Secured participation from at least three adults over the age of 18 who will serve as Charter members.

• Reviewed the MapStory Community Ethics and Terms of Service at wiki.mapstory.org

Additionally, (ORGANIZATION) declares its intention to fulll the following commitments, at a minimum, in order to

maintain its status as a recognized Campus Chapter:• Adhere to MapStory’s Community Ethics and Terms of Service

• Produce new StoryLayers and MapStories for the MapStory global community.

• Maintain a current Point of Contact for the MapStory Foundation at all times

• Follow the law of the land.

In return, the MapStory Foundation commits to conferring, at a minimum, the following benets upon

(ORGANIZATION):

• Feature (ORGANIZATION) on mapstory.org as a recognized Community Chapter

• Provide (ORGANIZATION) with a free mapstory.org/______ Organization Page to feature all StoryLayers and

MapStories

• Provide free MapStory merchandise to support the Chapter’s launch when available• Provide organization and content advising on occasion

• Provide access to grant, internships and other opportunities when available

• Priority registration and reduced cost for MapStorytelling webinars and conferences when available.

This MoA is understood to endure for four years after the signature date, at which point the MoA must be reviewed,

amended if necessary and re-signed by all parties. A reection survey must be completed by the Community

Chapters two years after signing this MoA.

If at any time the MapStory Foundation considers (ORGANIZATION) to be out of compliance with this agreement, or

otherwise unt for recognition as a Community Chapter, it reserves the ability to revoke its chapter status and resolve

any other forms of partnership and/or recognition.

Similarly, (ORGANIZATION) retains the ability to end its status as a Community Chapter at any time. The MapStory

Foundation requests at least two weeks notice of any decision to close a Community Chapter in written form by the

current Point of Contact and two other persons.

Signatories to this MOA understand that “MapStory” is a trademark of The MapStory Foundation, and the Community

Chapter’s use of the term must comply with the MapStory trademark’s terms of use as outlined at wiki.mapstory.org/

Terms_of_Service

The MapStory Foundation retains no legal responsibility for any actions taken by (ORGANIZATION) and its members.

All parties recognize that this MoA is not accompanied by the force of law and serves only to support a mutual

agreement made by the parties listed below of their own free will and accord.
