A community will honour a former 21-year politician by naming a park after him on Saturday morning. by Sylver McLaren [email protected] A year and a half after retiring as mayor of Pitt Meadows, Don MacLean is being honoured with “his own” park. “I’m really excited. I think they’ve done that,” MacLean said. “And I’m still alive. When I first heard about this I thought ‘do they know something I don’t’,” he said with a laugh. “It’s fantastic.” MacLean owns Sharpe’s Insurance. It’s round two for voters in the MapleRidge-Mission riding – Mike Bocking ver-sus Marc Dalton. But that’s where thesimilarities seem to end.

Bocking, the candidate for the NDP, saidthere is a different feel this time round inthe provincial election.

“It does seem this time people seem tobe ready for a change,” he said.

Dalton, the incumbent, said his connec-tion with the community has “deepened”over his term in office.

Everyone is invited to breakbread on Saturday night atGolden Ears United Church.

by Maria [email protected]

Golden Ears United Church hasagreed to host a Saturday night com-munity dinner previously held at theCEED Centre.

From a barbecue on the streets ofHaney to a small indoor venue at theCEED Centre to Golden Ears UnitedChurch, St. George’s CommunitySuppers will continue the tradition ofserving hot meals and building com-munity for those looking for somerespite on Saturday nights.

After the District of Maple Ridgeasked that the group who providedabout 70 people with regular mealsat the CEED Centre every week onSaturday night to find another loca-tion, Golden Ears United Churchstepped in and invited them – albeitpending final approval from thechurch’s executive – to serve themeals in their facilities at 22165Dewdney Trunk Rd.

This approval came through lastweek, reported the church’s ministerLeenane Shiels.

The community suppers began asa late night barbecue outside of Benzon North Avenue and 223rd Street, started by Teri Mitchell’s late hus-band several years ago.

Mitchell is the coordinator of thedinners, and she was greatly appre-ciative the space the CEED Centregave them.

The last meal was held on March 23 at theCEED Centre, and the next week the groupmoved their dinners seamlessly to GoldenEars United, which will now be the perma-nent location.

The meals are served in the church’s

lounge, which is like a “familyroom,” said Mitchell.

“Having the kitchen has simplified things agreat deal,” Mitchell said.

There are real dishes and silverware – noneed to rely on styrofoam, which increasesboth cost and garbage.

“If we run out of coffee, we can make

another pot,” she added.St. George’s Community Suppers

represent a group of volunteers dedi-cated to serving meals to those whoare hungry, and while it’s named afterthe church that Mitchell’s husbandattended, many of the volunteers arenon-churchgoers, Mitchell pointed out.

The people who come for the com-munity suppers are from many walksof life, Mitchell explained, some low-income, others homeless, while somehave mental health and addictionsissues.

But there are families and seniorswho come as well, and the dinners areopen to anyone who wants to join in.

One person bikes in from Mission toattend the suppers, but most diners arefrom the local community.

When the Hammond and St.Andrew’s United churches united lastsummer, part of the hope was to makeit a church that was even stronger inserving God and the community work-ing collaboratively with other groups, said Shiels.

“It’s responding to the gospel callto feed the hungry and be the body ofChrist in the world,” Shiels said.

The meal is more than just charity, itis open to the com-munity and an invi-tation to the com-munity to “breakbread together,”she added.

The UnitedChurch, an offshootof the MethodistChurch, has a“particular bentfor social justice,”

Shiels explained, but it extends beyond feed-ing the hungry – they want to figure out thethe bigger issues.

St. George’s Community Suppers take placeevery Saturday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at GoldenEars United Church, 22165 Dewdney TrunkRoad.

Maple Ridge council has asked forchanges to bylaw wording, which willlead to another public hearing.

by Maria [email protected]

Maple Ridge council sent a bylaw aboutzoning for medicinal marijuana grow oper-ation back to staff for revisions after con-cerns were raised at a public hearing.

Council was considering a bylaw, whichwould have restricted grow-ops to agricul-tural areas, but concerns were raised aboutproposed setbacks and parcel sizes.

The issue is not whether marijuana isgood or bad, he added.

“I’ve heard some compelling accountsof the medical side and how it’s benefitedpeople in some really tough situations,”Daykin said. However, he added, councilwants to remove it from residential areas.

The amended bylaw will have to go backto a public hearing.

Council also dealt with a medicinal mari-juana grow-op in the Hammond industrialarea, giving the property owner 30 days tohire a consultant to find a solution to thesmell from the operation. (The owner canappeal to council for an extension.)

District of Maple Ridge staff have beendealing with the issue since last summerafter receiving complaints about odours,Daykin said.

“The neighbouring folks have to be partof the equation – what’s fair to them,” headded.

Police are looking for witnessesof two different accidents alongLougheed in east Maple Ridge.by Sylver [email protected]

Two men in two days have died incrashes on Lougheed Highway.

A Maple Ridge man was killed when aDodge Durango collided with a Ford F250pickup late Monday afternoon. That fol-lowed another fatal crash on Sunday inWhonnock.

Monday’s head-on accident occurred at3:45 p.m. in the 24400 block of LougheedHighway, said Ridge Meadows RCMP traf-fic Sgt. Dale Somerville.

Just like the Sunday accident in the28200 block of Lougheed “there’s no

obvious contributing factors” to explainwhy the one vehicle crossed over intooncoming traffic, Somerville said.

In Monday’s crash, Dirk Blackburn, a57-year-old Maple Ridge man was pro-nounced dead at the scene, while the 53-year-old driver of the other vehicle wasairlifted to hospital with what Somervilledescribed as non-life-threatening injuries.

“This crash involved a pickup truck anda sport utility vehicle colliding head-on.Police are still trying to determine thecause, as road and weather conditionswere very good at the time of the crash,”explained Somerville.

“Initial indications are the SUV crossedover into the path of the pickup. Neitherspeed nor alcohol appear to be factors,”the sergeant added. “We are asking forany witnesses who have not yet spokenwith police to do so as soon as possible.”

Hundreds gathered at the new Bell-Irving fish hatchery Sunday for itsofficial re-opening.by Roxanne [email protected]

It seemed only fitting that it shouldbe raining leading up to the watershedceremonies, and that it should stop or atleast reduce to little more than a drizzleminutes into the one-hour program ofspeeches, gift giving, and cake cutting, said KEEPS president Dave Smith.

Sunday marked the annual KanakaEducation and Environmental PartnershipSociety (KEEPS) Goodbye Chums eventheld every year around Earth Day, wherethe public is invited to release the fry andtake part in a number of other educationaland family-oriented activitiesalong the creek.

Sunday’s festivities alsomarked the opening of phaseone of the new Kanaka CreekWatershed Stewardship Centreproject. And all the par-ties involved in making the$325,000 new hatchery a real-ity were there to be thankedand to rejoice.

But it’s only phase one of amuch bigger vision, and thesecond stage of the project isstill to come, explained Smith, amid a few hoops and hollers.

He cheered, for instance, the fact thatthe Bell-Irving hatchery has been operat-ing for more than 30 years as an attrac-tion to the park, an educational facility, meeting place, and a highly productivehatchery and how it’s all been madepossible thanks to partnerships with theDistrict of Maple Ridge, Metro Vancouverparks, federal fisheries and oceans, PacificSalmon Foundation and Pacific ParklandFoundation, as well as KEEPS and otherkey community supporters who careabout the future of the salmon population

and the watershed preservation not onlyin Kanaka Creek but also the neighbouringAlouette River system.

“Be proud of who we are, and whatwe’ve accomplished,” he said, just beforeasking for more donations of time, energy, and resources to make phase two of theproject – an education centre intended toopen by 2015 – a reality.

Final drawings are in the works now forthe new building, with hopes constructioncan start later this year on the $1-millionfacility.

THUD! That’s the writ beingdropped last week.

Thud, thud, thud, thud: thesound of election signs going intothe ground almost immediatelyafter.

Start up the manure spreader, the election is on. Bette and Bingare facing off in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows and Mike, “TheBridesmaid” Bocking is trying tounseat Marc, “My Butt Belongs inthe Back Benches” Dalton. Daltonbeat Bocking by a mere 68 voteslast time around.

It’s all about jobs and the deficit, health educa-tion and welfare, pipelines and environment andjust about every aspect of life here in paradise.

Adrian Dix has been dropping planks at the rateof one per day in Liberal ridings, almost daringthem to respond while Christy takes to the TVwith her dimpled message of hope.

There are two other parties – the Greens andthe Conservatives – battling for third place anda seat or two in the legislature. Manuel Pratas isrunning for the Conservatives in Maple Ridge-PittMeadows, for the experience no doubt, althoughMr. Pratas figures that Bing and Rosenau are vul-nerable because they are neophytes, when in factBing has been on council in Pitt Meadows since2005 and Rosenau has political veteran MikeSather leading her team into the fray.

Someone mentioned that both candidatesare from medical backgrounds, Bing a dentist– which may be a liability knowing how somepeople feel about their dentists – and Rosenau apill counter with London Drugs.

(As recently as last night I have learned thatthe Greenies have waded in to both ridings withcandidates).

The NDP promise is “Change for the Better.” Ican’t imagine anyone offering a “Change for theWorse,” not until they’ve been in power a while.

The Libs are harkening back to the 1990s quitea lot when the Pinkos were in power and spend-ing money like drunken sailors on shore leave, most notably – to keep the nautical theme alive

– on Glen Clark’s Fast Cats, whichflopped as ferries and were soldprivately for a fraction of theircost. Clark now works for uber-capitalist Jimmy Pattison some-thing the Libs could use to theiradvantage: when socialism startsto suck, you can always comework for the private sector.

The Liberals also draggedAdrian Dix’s dirty laundry out ofthe bottom of the hamper, citing amemo he forged for Glen Clark inthe Casino Gate Scandal in 1998,which resulted in Dix’s termina-

tion with a generous $70,000 severance package. It’s all part of the negative ad strategy that par-

ties use at election. If you can’t say anything badabout someone, don’t say anything at all.

Clark, of course, has her own cross to bear, the conflict of interest and corruption allegationsrelated to the sale of BC Rail. That was then, thisis now: Dirty water under the bridge, raw sewageinto the inner harbour.

I did make it to the Dirt Day celebrations atthe Peace Park, a hot house of left wing environ-mentalism complete with apolitical storytellingand baked goods. Strangely enough no politicalsightings, although I believe the NDP had a boothup and were giving away samples of medicinalmarijuana.

The New Down Syndrome Democratic Party:rumours of another party fielding candidates inour two ridings: under the leadership of Summerand Tory Brack, two Ruskin gals who photographvery well, and are conducting a campaign to ridthe language of inappropriate use of the ‘R’ word– retard. Their younger brother Colton has DS.

They made their first presentation at GaribaldiSecondary before a packed house and were sosuccessful they have decided to take their cam-paign to the people. Summer will run in MapleRidge-Pitt Meadows, Tori in Maple Ridge-Mission.

I have nothing but respect for these two youngwomen. I have raised these same points myself inthis space but unlike the girls I am neither prettyor photogenic.

Our View

What a visit toU.S.A. worth?

Everyone’s in a tizzy since theAmericans announced they’re consider-ing charging a fee to Canadian bordercrossers.

While bridges across the LowerMainland, including the one betweenMaple Ridge and Langley, are springingup with tolls, we’ve always taken it forgranted that a trip to the States will begratis.

Well, for a certainvalue of free.

A border crossingfee, especially one of$1 to $10, won’t deteranyone from makinga once-a-year trip tosee Disneyland or theirAmerican friends or relatives. But thereare those who cross the border everyday – truckers, mostly, but some folkschoose to live in Canada and work inthe U.S., or vice versa.

Then there are those who cross oncea week or so, to get cheap gas, maybepick up some milk and eggs.

For those frequent crossers, it will bethe equivalent of a significant toll.

That’s in addition to the non-mon-etary costs we’ve endured along theborders over the past decade. Increasedsecurity has meant the need for moreidentification, including passports orenhanced driver’s licenses.

If the U.S. puts a border toll in place, they’ll be taking a small chunk out ofthe Canadian economy.

We could put up a tit-for-tat fee ofour own – but that would also hurt us.Do we want to discourage Americantourists and film crews from coming uphere and pouring money into our cof-fers? Definitely not.

It’s been decades now since we hadour debate about free trade with theU.S. It’s ironic that, with free tradethoroughly entrenched, the UnitedStates is now considering putting a priceon the movement of individuals throughthe undefended border.

Dear Editor,I watched the Christy show

last week, as she was talk-ing with staged people in herpathetic attempt to make theBC Liberals seem legitimate.

The total provincial debt isforecast to be $62.7 billion in2013-2014, up $7.7 billion fromthe $56 billion the BC Liberalsforecast. Eight of the BCLiberals’ 13 budgets have beendeficits, including their last five.

The queen of the photo-op has gazedinto her crystal ball and said, trust us wehave everything under control and you canbelieve me when I say this one is balanced.

Some time in the future, B.C. will makebillions of dollars from the sale of LiquifiedNatural Gas (LNG).

It would be years before any of these

facilities are even built. The SiteC Dam would have to be built toprovide the needed power.

Remember what happenedwith Tumbler Ridge coal.Japanese steel companies brokesigned contracts to buy the coalwhen coal prices dropped, leav-ing B.C. taxpayers to foot thebills.

Having contracts for LNG withChina only means they will paythe going rate until the price

drops or some other country offers to sell forless, once again leaving the taxpayer footingthe bill.

The majority of people in B.C. won’t besad to see Christy go. Maybe she couldreturn to one of the three universities sheattended but never graduated from.

Local food

Watch what you eatDear Editor,

When I moved to Pitt Meadows in 2007, Iwas excited to shop at a local market. I lovethe idea of fresh, local, ethically raised meatfor my family.

Although they don’t raise their ownchicken, they had a sign up stating theybuy/sell only local, ethically raised chicken.

Unfortunately, I found out after five yearsof shopping there that the “knowing whereyour meat is from” slogan they tote doesnot apply to their frozen meat.

I routinely bought the chicken strips formy toddlers. Despite the frozen chickenhaving nothing but a store label and cook-ing instructions (no ingredient list), I wassomehow to know this chicken came fromelsewhere – as is all their frozen, pre-madefood.

No one thought to tell me that, as I stoodin line with my children, paying top dollarso I could serve only the best to them.

So as I support my tax dollars goingto local food production, buyer beware.Always ask where your food is from, evenwhen buying from a local, family-run busi-ness. I didn’t, and for that, I fed my chil-dren a step above McDonald’s without evenknowing it.

Breanna Curley, Pitt Meadows

Dear Editor,Cherryl Katnich’s comments [Not all apol-

ogies are equal, Mar. 26 Letters, TIMES] area perfect example of why the BC Liberalsrepeat falsehoods at every opportunity andhope that people will believe them.

Adrian Dix did not forge a memo. Hewrote a memo for his own files. He did, however, backdate it, for which he apolo-gized and was fired. He was also nevercharged with anything.

The notorious “memo to file” affair erupt-ed 14 years ago, when police were breath-ing down then-premier Glen Clark’s neck.

Police (led by Peter Montague, a knownLiberal supporter, and with suspiciouslyaccompanying television crews), raidedClark’s home over his relationship withDimitrios Pilarinos, a neighbour of his.

Mr. Pilarinos had applied for a provincialcasino license in Burnaby. Allegations sur-faced that Mr. Clark had received a benefitfrom him, in the form of carpentry work.

It was later proved in court that Mr. Clarkpaid for the work. And Mr. Pilarinos did notwin the casino license.

The memo said Clark had personallyinstructed Dix to “ensure that he [Clark]take no part in any aspect of the decision”to award the casino licence.

After writing the memo, Mr. Dix took thedate stamp for the Office of the Premier

from his secretary’s desk, turned the dateback to July 17, 1998, and stamped thememo with that date.

When Mr. Clark faced political corruptioncharges the following year, Mr. Dix’s memosurfaced as evidence that the premier haddistanced himself from the process.

Mr. Clark resigned. At trial, the chargewas dismissed by Justice Elizabeth Bennett, and if her judgment is to be believed, onecould fairly conclude that the special pros-ecutor was either incompetent or dishonestwhen he advised the prosecution servicethat there was sufficient information toobtain a conviction.

Election 2013

Dix details worthy of explanation

Election 2013

Behaviour says it allDear Editor,

The best predictor of future behaviour ispast behaviour. This is a proven behaviourprinciple, a great guide for anticipating howsomeone might react to a situation, challen-ging question, or problem.

Adrian Dix’s boss got into trouble, so tohelp him out, Dix composed a false docu-ment. He had days to think it over and stillchose to lie to police.

By his own admission, what he did was“wrong.” Those of us who do not move insuch circles of power and privilege mighthave found ourselves in court, facing ser-ious charges and penalties. Adrian Dix,however, got $70,000 of our money.

Would a moral person, with only thepublic good at heart, cash this cheque?Apparently, he had no trouble with themoral question, as he cashed the cheque.

In 2005, Mr. Dix ran for MLA ofVancouver Kingsway and was elected. Thepeople of Vancouver Kingsway, of course, owe the rest of the province no justificationfor their selection. It is their right to choose.

In February 2013, Adrain Dix approvedan ad mocking those of us who felt thathis questionable background made himan unacceptable candidate for premier ofthe province. According to the NDP party, anyone who mentions past transgressions isindulging in “attack ads.”

When making our decision as to who willbe responsible for our province’s future, isit unbecoming to consider past behaviour?

In the words of the old Al Wilson song,“You knew damn well I was a snake beforeyou took me in.”

Please, vote.Andree D’Andrea, Maple Ridge

The TIMES has been recognizedfor a recent educational packagehighlighting future recycling leaders.

by Roxanne [email protected]

Up-and-coming recyclers inMaple Ridge and Pitt Meadowshave been recognized– indirectly – for all they’redoing to change the world.

On Saturday, The TIMESwas given a silver medalfrom industry peers for thecreation of the 40 Under 40campaign that ran last fallin conjunction with theRidge Meadows RecyclingSociety’s 40th anniversary.

Inside the newspaperindustry, The TIMES earnedthe recognition through the B.C. andYukon Community Newspaper Associationin the arena of community service.

Ridge Meadows Recycling Society hasbeen a thriving organization in this com-munity for four decades, and to mark thatmilestone anniversary last year, The TIMESteam wanted to do something special torecognize their “incredible contribution”to both the community and environment, explained publisher Spencer Levan.

While providing news coverage for all ofthe different events, and providing profileson a few of the founding and early mem-bers of the society around Earth Day, TheTIMES focused most of its attention on thefuture of recycling in Maple Ridge and PittMeadows.

Partnering with the depot on the 40Under 40 campaign, the paper highlighted40 young people who make significantcontributions to this community’s sustain-ability.

The newspaper industry judgesdescribed the finished product as “aninnovative way to highlight an important

aspect of community life – recycling andsustainability. Good use of the paper’s rolein providing information and highlightingstories.”

Levan congratulated both the recyclingsociety and his TIMES team for the award.

The intention of this campaign wasto highlight 40 local people, all 40 yearsor younger, who are making significant

contributions to sustainabil-ity in this community andwho are the up-and-comingenvironmental leaders.

Working in partnershipwith the society, The TIMES’campaign included advertis-ing and stories calling fornominations, as well as aseries of features remind-ing people of the 40 Under40 competition while profil-ing some of the community’senvironmentalists who areover the age of 40 who play animportant role in recycling.

The print package culminated with afeature package on Oct. 23 (during WasteReduction Week) featuring each one ofthe 40 winners with a picture and briefbiography, as well as more stories aboutthe next generation of recyclers.

“Through the years, this paper hascovered many of the environmental stor-ies and issues that affect residents of thiscommunity. They have helped our societypromote new programs, initiatives, andchanges and are a valuable part of ourlocal media,” said the recycling society’sspokesperson Leanne Koehn, daughter ofthe society’s two founding members.

“We remain grateful for this opportun-ity to partner with the Maple Ridge & PittMeadows TIMES and look forward to ournext project together,” she added.

Levan said “community” is the keyword in this, and he and the team havebeen proud to serve this community formore than a quarter century and he’slooking forward to continuing that work.

Maple Ridge Secondary students celebrated a correct answer during the Jeopardy portion of Battle of the Books, held at Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary late last week.

Students sharedliteracy, culture, andfun during a friendlycompetition insidethe Samuel RobertsonTechnical Secondarylibrary late last week.

by Troy [email protected]

High school studentsfrom across the district“battled” inside SamuelRobertson Technical (SRT)Secondary’s library lastThursday, April 18.

Battle of the Books is areading challenge in whichstudents representing bookclubs from Pitt Meadows,Westview, Thomas Haney,Maple Ridge, and SRTsecondary schools playedtrivia games centredaround six novels theyread over the spring break.

The books wereDivergent, Erebos, Lookingfor Alaska, The AbsoluteTrue Diary of a Part TimeIndian, The People’sRepublic (Cherub series),and The Kill Order.

Teams of students fromeach school tested theirknowledge of the novelsat three stations that mim-icked the popular TV gameshows Wheel of Fortuneand Jeopardy.

The third station was avariation of the game ofcharades.

Points were collected ateach station and at the endof the competition theywere totalled up, decidingthe winner of the BOB tro-phy, which this year wentto the group from MapleRidge Secondary.

Adding a cultural twistto the finale, because aFirst Nations author waspart of the mix, was a for-mer student who demon-strated a jingle dance forthe participants. Her moth-er also spoke about thesymbolism in the regalia.

“The kids got someexposure to powwow cul-ture,” said Suzanne Hall,a former district librarianwho helped start Battle ofthe Books.

Hall is an elementaryaboriginal resource teacherin the district. She helpedout at the event becauseone of the books was

penned by a First Nationsauthor.

The Battle of the Booksis an off-shoot from BookFest, a long-standing pro-gram involving elementaryschools in the district.Four years ago, the sec-ondary school librariansdecided to bring Book Festto the high school level.

Hall said Battle of theBooks could become athing of the past, if thedistrict decidesd to cutteacher-librarians, as hasbeen proposed as part ofthe budget cuts this year.

“This is really on thebubble for next year,” Hallsaid.

Ifirst met Trevor Batstonevirtually, when he volun-teered to take part in thePitt Meadows Economic

Development Corporation’sambassador program.

I was doing an interim stintthere and we promoted the pro-gram via social media channels.

Trevor saw our promotionsand signed up online.

As a courtesy, I began follow-

ing @trev_batsone on Twitterand soon a “friend” request onFacebook followed. KnowingTrevor was a good guy becausehe had volunteered for ourprogram, I friended him back.(That’s Facebook-speak foraccepting friend requests).

Trevor and I had many conver-sations on Twitter and Facebookabout myriad topics, and I dis-covered he is an avid and tal-ented aviation photographer.

Trevor discovered many thingsabout me as well, not the leastof which is my love of food andcooking, as well as a somewhatquirky attachment to all thingsgeek.

We didn’t actually meet in per-son until he stopped by a boothI was staffing at the farmersmarket.

As I recall, it was a hot, busy day at the market – or itcould’ve been a cold, rainy dayat the market – but either way, Itook a quick break to have some-thing to eat and Trevor came byto say hi. He was very polite andoffered to leave me aloneto have my food.

By this, I immediatelyknew we were going tobecome fast friends. Ouronline friendship con-tinued.

A couple of months ago,Trevor invited me to a network-ing meeting that I followed withan invitation to lunch. Fastforward to that day: Trevor andI are sitting face-to-face in a res-taurant for the first time about tohave a real-life conversation witheach other. This is that moment

when your online life meets youroff-line life. The result?

Well, I’m polishing up thisarticle having just returned fromanother lunch with Trevor, thistime at the Pitt Meadows Airport, joined by Fred Armstrong, a

RLT (Real Life, Too) friendof mine and a new tweepfor Trevor. My point? Theenvironment of socialmedia is virtual, but therelationships are real.

Finding kindred spir-its online provides an addedrichness to life and an almostendless network of resources. Iknow that I can reach out to thecommunity at any time and I’mvery likely to get exactly what Ineed. Including a free lunch.• A full version of Vicki’s column is online

Brent Langridge has comea long way since he firstentered the Sun Hang Dostudio back in 2001.by Troy [email protected]

Smooth as fresh milk, with thenimbleness and fluidity of a dan-cer, Brent Langridge practised hispunching, blocking, and kickingtechniques while warming up fora recent early-morning class at theSun Hang Do martial arts studioin Maple Ridge.

The grace in which the 30-year-old practises martial arts didn’tcome overnight.

He’s been training at SunHang Do’s local studio at 20475Lougheed Hwy. for 12 years underthe guidance of master instructorDave Kinney.

On Saturday, May 4 atWestview Secondary, Brent willcompete in the Sun Hang Do tour-nament and exhibition where hewill receive his black belt fromSun Hang Do founder GrandMaster Kang.

Away from the studio, Brentplays drums, sings karaoke, andwatches Vancouver Canucksgames.

The PittMeadowsSecondary gradalso works at Wal-Mart in the main-tenance depart-ment and duringhis down time, reads and writespoetry and stories.

Brent also hap-pens to have Downsyndrome.

Community sup-port worker MaryMorellato hasworked with Brentand his family forthe past 24 yearsand said martial artshas boosted his self-confidence.

“I’ve seen him grow and maturethroughout this whole process,”Morellato said. “It’s also givenhim an outlet for exercise that’sreally important.”

Brent’s keen eye started hislong relationship with Sun HangDo. In September 2001, Morellatowas driving Brent along DewdneyTrunk Road when he spotted thestudio.

“Brent had seen some

martial arts on TV and he pointedto the window,” she recalled. “Iasked, ‘Do you want to try that?’And he said, ‘Yes.’”

Upon entering the studio,Morellato asked Kinney if he tookpeople with special needs.

He laughed and gestured tohis daughter Keauna, now 17,who has a rare genetic conditionknown as Kleefstra syndrome.

Twelve years later, Brent sayshe feels at home in the studio.

“I love it,” he said. “It’s really

good. It gives me muscles andenergy.”

His black belt is long awaited.Brent tested for the belt sixmonths ago during an eight-hourevent involving roughly 70 stu-dents from all nine Sun Hang Doschools located around the LowerMainland.

Two weeks later, he was unableto attend the black belt ceremonybecause he underwent surgery fora herniated belly button.

“He’s had really good patience,”Kinney said. “He’s had a tempor-ary black belt for six months.”

Kinney has enjoyed trainingwith Brent through the years.

“He tries hard,” Kinney said.“He gets lazy once in a while likeall of us, but he’s great.”

Kinney said dedication and hardwork prevails over more tangibleelements, and Brent’s situation is

no exception.“The people that are consistent

with their attendance, consistentwith their training, and have thatnever-give-up attitude, those arethe ones who succeed,” Kinneysaid. “The two things that everyblack belt in the world have incommon is, they all started out asa white belt, and they never gaveup.”

Brent’s attitude mirrors the SunHang Do philosophy, Kinney said.

“Sun” means to be kind andgood, “Hang” implies behav-iour, actions, and conduct, and“Do” translates into the endlessimprovement of one’s self.

Martial arts isn’t Brent’s onlysporting interest.

In July he’ll be going for goldin bowling at the upcoming 2013BC Special Olympics SummerGames in Langley.
