The farmers of Pitt Meadows are anticipating a record-setting blueberry crop this summer.
“It’s another bumper crop,” said Pitt Meadows farmer Gary Pure-wal.
Purewal owns one of the larg-est blueberry operations in Pitt
Meadows, and farms 1,500 acres (600 hectares) across the Lower Mainland.
It is a fast growing sector of the agri-economy.
In recent years, an increas-ing number of farms have been re-planted from other crops to blueberries, and plants are ma-turing and becoming their most productive.
Combine that with near-perfect growing conditions, and some industry analysts are predicting that this year’s harvest will blow away last year’s record 54.5 mil-
lion kilograms by as much as 25 per cent.
Purewal said he has a field in Coquitlam that yielded 400,000 pounds in its first pick last year (180,000 kg), but this year he was astounded at its productivity – he just finished taking off over a mil-lion pounds (480,000 kg).
Overall, he estimates his pro-duction on all fields is up by 25 per cent on the first pick.
“The reason, I think, has been climate and pollination,” he said. “The weather was conducive for pollination.”
Debbie Etsell, the executive director of the B.C. Blueberry Council, said the perfect weather goes right back to a fall that was good for winterizing plants, a mild winter and spring, “and now we’ve got the sunshine.”
Another factor, she explained, is that in the past eight years there has been a great deal of planting of new high bush blueberries in the Fraser Valley. It takes three years before they are productive, and 10 years before they reach maturity and full production.
Production expected to increase 25 per cent

Becker back to run for Pitt mayor
A former Pitt Meadows coun-cillor who lost his mayoralty bid to Deb Walters in the last election declared Tuesday that he will again challenge her for the job.
“It’s about trans-parency and fis-cal management at city hall,” John Becker said as he launched his campaign to unseat the city’s first female mayor.
Becker received 1,202 votes in the 2011 civic election, 823 less than Wal-ters’ 2,025.
A lawyer, he spent the past three years studying for an executive MBA through Simon Fraser University.

Rain did not deter the approximate-ly 8,000 spectators who attended the free aerobatic airshow held at the Pitt Meadows Regional Airport Sunday.
Hosted by the North Fraser Air-show Society, the airshow, which had not been held since 2009, was part of the airport’s annual Airport Day, which included a beer and wine gar-den, educational activities and static displays of aircraft and cars.
A dozen aerobatic acts, including local talent such as Super Dave in his MX2, graced the skies for the three-hour event, which had local cadets and others volunteering on site.
Kris Grasty, one of the airshow so-ciety’s directors and show organizers, says dark clouds and some precipita-tion did not affect the show a great deal.
“We ended up losing two acts only,” said Grasty, adding that “the rain held off pretty much to the end of the show.”
One of those two acts was Canada’s only professional female wing walker, Quebec resident Carol Pilon, who could not perform due to the rain.
However, Gary Ward, an American air show pilot – now 73 but “as dar-ing and exciting” as ever – performed aerial tricks.
Attendees also witnessed a fly-by of Canadian Air Force CT-155s and 156s training fighter jets.
On-the-ground displays included a Canadian military CH-146 Grif-fon utility helicopter that had been used in the Afghanistan War, a rare Mooney M10 Cadet plane that fea-
tured a Continental C90-16F engine, and a 1937 Wace AQC-6 four-seater float plane, originally purchased by Canada’s Department of National De-fense and now on display in the Cana-dian Museum of Flight.

Pitt Meadows Regional Airport is going to offer a more direct route to Victoria.
Harbour Air Group announced it will be expand-ing its service to include service to Victoria from Pitt Meadows twice daily seven days a week.
Beginning Sept. 22, the new service will fly out of Pitt Meadows to Victoria in the morning, followed by a round trip midday and a final flight back to Pitt Meadows in the evening.
Passengers will check in at Pitt Meadows Regional Airport and be escorted down to the river dock to board the DHC-3 Turbine Single Otter 14-passen-ger seaplane. Flight time is estimated at 35 minutes to Victoria.
Meredith Moll, with Harbour Air Group, says her company recognized the need for a centrally located
commuter service to Victoria.“We liked the idea of a central location, something
that was more convenient for our customers having to commute,” says Moll.
Booking flights for the new service will begin on-line and over the phone later this month.
Harbour Air will continue to offer flights to Vic-toria from its other locations, including Richmond and Vancouver.
Harbour Air Group consists of Harbour Air Sea-planes, Westcoast Air, Whistler Air, Tantalus Air and Aeroflite International Services.
In 2011, Whistler Air operated a commuter flight service out of Pitt Meadows called the Georgia Strait Connector. The flight took passengers from Pitt Meadows to downtown Vancouver, then Victoria.
Moll says Harbour Air reviewed the strategy and found customers wanted a more direct Victoria flight.
“We see our market as more direct time savings,” she said.
Harbour Air purchased Whistler Air in 2012.

So more plants are get-ting close to their poten-tial.
Perfect weather and more plants are making a dramatic difference. Having walked in fields and talked with produc-ers, Etsell too expects this year’s crop will exceed last year’s record.
“We’ve still got a lot of season to go,” she said, noting that cold and rain could still hurt yields.
Once berries start to ripen on a field, Purewal and other producers have just four days to get them picked.
“It’s a huge problem,” he said, but it’s a good prob-lem to have.
He will get the job done with mechanical pickers that shake the bushes, and the busy hands of almost 500 pickers he employs for the harvest season.
Generally, blueberry plants produce two “good picks,” he explained, then a lighter crop for a third pick, which is termed “cleanup.”
Getting the billions of blue orbs through pro-cessing plants and on to market will be another challenge, as farms across the Fraser Valley com-pete for facilities. Almost the entire high bush blue-berry sector in B.C. is lo-cated in the Fraser Valley.
It will be a busy time in the valley. B.C.’s blue-berry growers employ more than 10,000 work-ers, to work in the fields, harvest, pack and process the fruit.
There were $155 mil-lion worth of blueberries exported from B.C. last year, making it one of the province’s biggest agri-cultural exports. That’s a rise of 31 per cent in just two years. The main mar-kets were found in the U.S., Japan, China and Australia.
About half off the crop will be sold at farmers markets, supermarkets, and at farm gates.
Purewal said he will be offering sales of four-pound bags of frozen berries direct from his plant on Hale Road this year.
“It’s a phenomenal crop,” he said.
“And it’s going to be good for the consumer – it’s good fruit.”

A fire was quickly put out Sat-urday night in Maple Ridge af-ter firefighters spotted a flicker of flames while driving past the property.
Crews were on 127th Avenue to investigate another call when they noticed a garage on fire around 11:15 p.m.
The blaze gutted the garage, but crews kept it from spreading to the rest of the house.
Eight people were home when the fire started.
“It was very lucky because the occupants were out back with friends and they wouldn’t have noticed the fire until it broke through a window,” said assis-tant fire chief Mark Smitton.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Although the fire did not spread to the house, Smitton reminded homeowners and ten-ants to check their smoke alarms monthly.
Horse, rider rescuedA man was injured Friday while
riding a horse on a trail in east Ma-ple Ridge.
The rider was on an annual camping trip in Allco Park, orga-nized by the Haney Horsemen’s Association.
He was heading up a trail to cross the Alouette River when his horse took a tumble and fell 15 metres down an embankment.
“It is fairly slippery in that sec-tion,” Smitton said.
The man managed to crawl back onto the trail while firefighters cut back brush to reach the horse.
The man was taken to hospital for a checkup and a vet was called to tend to the horse.
“It was a good outcome consid-ering how serious it could have been,” Smitton added.
In particular, Smitton commend-ed a young rider who was nearby when the horse took a tumble. The Grade 8 student from Garibaldi secondary rode back for help.
“She was really good and gave us information on where the rider was and what the problem was,” he said.
“When people are on a trail, background information on where exactly they are is very impor-tant.”
Mill fire containedA fire at a Maple Ridge saw-
mill was quickly contained Monday evening.
The fire started in the con-veyor system of the mill on Lougheed Highway, near 287th Street.
Smitton said a driver spotted smoke and called 911 around 6:30 p.m.
“No structures were in dan-ger,” he added.
Four fire trucks responded to the call and remained on scene
for about an hour.

He also kept tabs on city hall.
If elected, Becker prom-ises to call for a spending freeze for 2015.
He is alarmed that Pitt Meadows is currently on track to raise tax revenue by approximately 25 per cent over the next five years, according to its own five-year financial plan.
“We can’t freeze taxes forever, but we need to get back to the basic bud-geting constraints that affect every family in the community. The cycle of raising taxes and spend-ing money has to stop,” said Becker, pointing to a two petitions demanding fiscal restraint signed by 2,600 residents.
Reiterating what he said during the 2011 campaign, Becker in-tends to begin with a budgeting process that freezes expenditures at 2014 levels, starting with the mayor’s salary.
“It is a way to stop and take a breath as a com-munity and then engage the public in the process.”
City hall has already performed some parts of Becker’s plan. After receiving a second peti-tion, council directed staff to prepare two bud-gets last year – one with a tax increase and a second without.
The exercise led council to pare down spending and deliver a 1.9 per cent property tax increase, the lowest in a decade.
Support for the tax increase was not unani-mous. The budget passed on a 4-3 split that in-volved then-councillor Doug Bing, who had just been elected MLA but stayed on council for the vote.
Since Bing’s departure, council has been divided, and Becker believes the status quo is not healthy.
He thinks the mayor should pull the team to-gether.
“That just hasn’t hap-pened. I’m at a bit of a loss as to why.”
He added that as a
trained facilitator and certified mediator, he has skills to get people to col-laborate.
“I understand these people. They all want to do what’s best for the community, but they are rudderless right now. They need a collaborative approach. That doesn’t mean a loud voice. The mayor’s voice should be the softest in the room, but there needs to be leadership to bring peo-ple together.”
Becker differentiated himself from Walters by declaring he is against building the North Lougheed Connec-tor, a contentious road through farmland that will service a 50-hectare commercial area. He be-lieves it should be part of a much larger planning exercise that involves nearby residents, stake-holders and the wider community.
Walters wasn’t sur-prised by Becker’s an-nouncement.
“Healthy debate is good for our community.”
She noted that the city will continue to prepare two budget scenarios, but wonders how Becker will deliver a spending freeze when the city can’t con-trol increases to Trans-Link or Metro taxes.
“I agree that we have to curb spending wherever possible, but the costs of doing business always go up and that’s what we have to accommodate,” said Walters.
“Certainly, we could go into our reserves, but that’s not good fis-cal management, in my opinion.”
Walters acknowledged that city council is cur-rently divided, but be-lieves things will change after the November civic election.
“It doesn’t help that we have a six-member coun-cil. When you have a full slate, it makes it a lot eas-ier,” she said.
“It’s very difficult when you have some mem-bers of council who don’t want to work together.”

VICTORIA – When the audited public accounts confirmed a $353 million surplus for the last fiscal year, B.C. Liberal political staff were quick to remind reporters of the NDP’s main theme from last year’s election campaign.
Pages of election quotes from almost every NDP MLA were waiting to be distributed. It was a “bogus budget,” one of the more polite tags applied to the government’s pre-election fiscal plan.
“It underestimates the costs in a whole bunch of ministries and we’re going to have to review that because all of the de-cisions that we propose in our platform will have to be implemented,” said then-leader Adrian Dix, describing the NDP’s plans to tax and spend more.
Skeena MLA Robin Austin targeted health care in the budget debate: “Bear-ing in mind that our population is actually increasing, bearing in mind that our population is aging, I think it’s very unrealistic to think we can actually limit health care expenditures to 2.7 per cent.”
As it turned out, health care spend-ing grew by just over two per cent. It still went up by $360 million from the previous year, but after annual increases of six or seven per cent had become the norm, this is quite an achievement. New agreements remain to be negotiated with doctors and nurses, so we’re unlikely to
see the same cost control results for the current year.
Ottawa’s health care transfer payment formula has changed, and increases are to be capped at three per cent a year by 2016, so this is the kind of spending restraint all provinces are expected to produce.
Education was the only other ministry to receive significant extra funding last year, up $299 million despite continu-ing enrolment decline. Like health, the education budget goes up every year, and these increases, along with strong student performance results, expose the rhetoric of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation about a cash-starved system for what it is.
But the biggest fabrication of last year’s election was the “debt free B.C.” slogan emblazoned on the side of Premier Christy Clark’s campaign bus.
The public accounts confirm that the province’s total debt rose to just over $60 billion, the latest of a series of increases since 2008. The much-touted balanced budget is on the operating side, while the province continues to pile up debt to pay for the Port Mann mega-project, hospi-tals, schools and other big infrastructure.
Finance Minister Mike de Jong empha-sized the difference between capital and operating expenditures.
“We’re borrowing to build as opposed to paying for the groceries,” he said.
“Debt free B.C.” was not an outright misrepresentation, merely one of the most far-fetched promises ever deliv-ered in the history of B.C. politics. The legislature is to convene in October so the B.C. Liberals can pass a taxation
framework for the nascent liquefied natural gas industry, which the govern-ment hopes will generate the revenues to ultimately pay off the province’s $60-bil-lion mortgage.
Meanwhile there is more capital debt ahead. The cabinet is expected to green-light the Site C dam on the Peace River this fall, a decade-long project estimated to cost $8 billion.
Along with the public accounts, the finance ministry released a list of surplus land sales. The sale of 50-odd properties, some of them closed schools, netted the provincial treasury about $310 million, which accounts for most of the surplus.
Was this “selling off the family silver-ware to try and balance the books,” as now-NDP leader John Horgan termed it before the election? It’s certainly not a revenue source to be matched next year.
Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Maple Ridge has decided to stick with the modest requirement of only two signatures on a candidate’s nomination form, instead of a possible 10 signa-tures.
Council decided at a recent meeting after a mo-tion from Coun. Cheryl Ashlie to remain at two, as Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board recently decided to do.
The decision puts the district at odds with Pitt Meadows, which has opted for requiring 10 signa-tures.
One of the points made was that the 10 signatures would reveal who those people support in the elec-tion. That’s a faulty assumption. Just because some-one signs nomination papers doesn’t mean he or she will vote for that candidate.
It’s true that the public decides (that is about a third of the eligible voters who bother) who gets elected to council for the next four years.
But what’s happening increasingly is that while the number of candidates grows – to a ridiculous 28 in the 2011 election – the number of voters shrinks.
Requiring at least 10 signatures would have whit-tled out the frivolous candidates and reduced the list, making it easier for voters to understand.
Another step which could have drawn public in-terest was to add referendum questions to the bal-lot, as proposed by mayoralty candidate Graham Mowatt. Couns. Corisa Bell and Bob Masse wanted to explore the idea, and at least discuss it, but to no avail.
Apart from more flexibility in choosing polling stations, council has let slip an opportunity to try new measures.
As result, council ensures nothing will change in Maple Ridge and voter turnout will continue to wane. It shows a failure of imagination, resolve and creativity by most on council who just want to keep things as they are.

This week’s question: Should survey or referendum questions be added to November’s civic election ballot?

Editor, The News:Re: Our schools can take no more:
board (The News, July 18).Anyone else impressed with how
public our school board has been about the chronic underfunding of education?
Anyone else wonder why? Let me remind you that, in less than
four months, there is another munic-ipal election for school board.
Don’t kid yourself, the upcoming election is the motivation behind the most recent letter and public state-ments made by our board regarding the latest round of extreme budget cuts that they were “forced” to make.
It is too little, too late. This very board, majority of members un-changed from the previous board, has made deep budget cuts to almost every facet of School District No. 42’s operations the last few years.
While doing so, they repeatedly stated that they have no choice due to their legal requirement to pass a bal-anced school budget. There is no de-nying that this is the case and we do have a recent example (Cowichan)
where government fired a locally elected school board for taking a stand and refusing to pass a balanced budget, then replaced them with a government official.
What better way to continue the Liberal government agenda of dis-mantling public education and have folks feel they have no choice but place their child in private school?
If they are forced to balance the budget, at the very least you would expect our locally elected board to advocate for our students in more creative ways than simply letter writ-ing.
Consider the fact that some of our trustees actively campaigned to get both of our Liberal MLAs elected, I wonder how those conversations go?
Enough is enough. On Nov. 15, we need to change our school board and elect another board that will do more than write letters to an already over-heated paper shredder at the minis-try.
My responsibility is to the teachers of Maple Ridge who elect me, not the BCTF.
And trustees should be responsible to the public who elect them, not BCPSEA.
At a recent meeting, trustee Ken Clarkson attempted to get the board to have a public discussion about the current bargaining impasse.
To have this discussion, it would have taken a majority vote by the other trustees to override their own policy keeping such matters to pri-vate meetings only.
Sure enough, the majority of the board voted against having a public discussion on our current situation.
In other words, the public has no idea where this board stands, exactly how trustees like it.
I know school board elections do not garner the same attention as city council, but I urge all of you con-cerned about our current education system and the chronic underfund-ing that is cutting direct services to our students, to make it a priority to vote.

Teachers’ Association
Editor, The News:I have enrolled 28 students in an Advanced Placement Psy-
chology course for September at Maple Ridge secondary.Disruption in September will significantly diminish the likeli-
hood of these students succeeding in this course and gaining university credit at MRSS next year.
Those students and their parents will be exceedingly dissatis-fied if this occurs, and rightly so.
As their teacher, I am personally doing everything I can to help bring about a negotiated settlement this summer. I am contact-ing and informing parents, teachers and community members on the issues. I am organizing and attending rallies, picket lines, and community events.
I ask what their MLA, Doug Bing, is doing to help ensure that these students can start their studies in September?
I have been informed that he is reading correspondence and meeting with constituents.
I am left to wonder if he is also advocating on their behalf with government leaders?
I also wonder how he would have felt if someone had let his dental studies be disrupted and found no one willing to stand up for him?

Pitt Meadows council has asked staff to gather more information to en-sure the city has the right data when it compares its property taxes to other communities.
Last week, council supported a motion in-troduced by Coun. Janis Elkerton to investigate mill rates.
“Let’s deal with the truth,” said Elkerton, adding she’s suspicious of
the city’s claim of having the third lowest taxes in Metro Vancouver.
“When you compare stuff, you need to have all the variables be the same and that’s not happen-ing.”
A mill rate is the amount of tax payable per dollar of the assessed value of a property.
Each mill is one-thou-sandth of a currency unit, equivalent to one-tenth of a cent or $0.001.
In Pitt Meadows, the mill rate last year was 3.87, while Surrey’s was
2.32 and West Vancouver was 1.77.
Elkerton said she’s often heard complaints about property taxes from resi-dents who’ve moved to Pitt Meadows from other parts of Metro Vancou-ver.
“They’ve downsized and are paying more tax-es,” said Elkerton.
“I want to find out why.”Coun. Gwen O’Connell
said staff would have to make sure they are mak-ing a fair comparison.
“I think there are a lot of questions out there
when we are quoted as being the lowest tax rate and when people look at their bills it’s different.”
Pitt Meadows will be-gin planning its 2015 budget in January, but staff cautioned council that mill rates are just one component that in-fluences property taxes.
“There is a concern that the mill rate itself will be misleading,” said director of finance Mark Roberts.
“I’m concerned that the mill rate on its own will not be a good indicator for council to compare.”

Thanks Bruce
I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to ght for good customer value.
Sincerely, Amy Gill

In the offices of Fire Hall No. 1, the nerve centre for emergen-
cy operations in Maple Ridge, awkward looking white shelves hang over the windows in the new $8-million building.
They look like they could be used to store
stuff, but they’re too fragile for that.
Instead, their real purpose is to capture daylight and disperse it on to the ceilings and floors. The light
again is picked up by translucent office wall panels and is further distributed into the hallway.
As a result, assistant fire chief Michael Van Dop rarely has to turn on his office lights.
It’s one of the tricks the building uses that allowed it to earn a gold in the Leader-ship in Energy and Environmental Design awards.
LEED is a U.S.-based energy-rating system that measures con-struction processes and building materials to encourage energy conservation.
It took four years for Maple Ridge to earn its gold certificate be-cause the building performance must be monitored in order to prove it’s saving en-ergy.
“It takes time,” ex-plained Laura Benson, sustainability manager with the District of Maple Ridge.
“That’s kind of what LEED is all about, the design, the building – so it’s all that stuff.”
Some of the other features of the build-ing that make it sip energy are automated light switches that turn lights on and off when motion is detected.
To keep the build-ing from soaking up heat in the summer, it has a white roof to reflect back sunshine. Geo thermal heating is also used, in which coolant is pumped into the ground then recir-culated back into the building for uniform temperatures during both winter and sum-mer. Thick insulation achieves a 35-per-cent savings in heating.
Even the fire hall’s lo-cation, on bus routes in the civic centre, earned the fire hall points, while storage for cycles achieved the same goal.
Low-flow toilets, auto tap sensors reduce wa-ter use by 20 per cent, and drought tolerant native plants outside means there’s no need to water outside.
The hall was built upon an expansion of an older building, al-lowing reuse of many materials, while 15 per cent of the mate-rials come from local sources.
Benson said with the old building, energy consumption (elec-tricity and natural gas combined) was 2.1 units per square metre of building space. Af-ter the renovation, it’s now 1.1 – a 46 per cent reduction.
No. 1 fire hall is saving money The renovated fire hall has
earned gold in the
Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design awards.

WEST COAST NISSAN19625 Lougheed Hwy, Pitt Meadows, BC
Tel: (604) 460-1333
10 -- Wednesday, July 23, 2014 -- THE NEWS - www.mapleridgenews.com
Last fall I came across an intrigu-ing advertisement
in the Gazette of June 6, 1951, announcing the opening of The Lazy Su-san Restaurant, a “mile west of Whonnock on Lougheed Highway.”
The new restaurant would be open from noon to eight in the evening every day, ex-cept Tuesday, offering “lunches and tea” and also dinners from $1.
Here was something I did not know anything about.
Nothing more could be found in the Gazette about The Lazy Susan or its fate, so I started to ask around.
Who had ever heard about The Lazy Susan?
Where was the res-taurant?
Who owned it? Some of the long-time
residents of Whonnock remembered that The Lazy Susan stood close to the foot of Spilsbury Street.
Others, as children, had a meal there with their parents.
It was owned, it seems, by the Stirks – a husband and wife team.
Nothing more came out of the collective memory.
I was ready to give up when just a few weeks ago I got a call from El-sie Meldrum, who told me that she treasured a copy of a long-for-gotten trade magazine called Restaurant & Caterer of August 1953, with a picture of Sam Stirk on the cover and inside an illustrated article about The Lazy Susan.
I dropped what I was doing and drove off to meet her.
The article in Res-taurant & Caterer de-scribes the interior of The Lazy Susan as “simple but attractive and homey.”
The Stirks used “kitchen-type” chairs with cushions and in-expensive plywood ta-bles for the dining area.
A large red brick fire-place with a comfort-able chesterfield and chairs were at one end.
French doors opened out on a treed lawn area with flower bor-ders, offering “ ... a commanding view of the Fraser [River], with Mount Baker in the background.”
There was ample off-highway parking space.
Sam Stirk, a RAF vet-eran, gained restaurant experience in Chilli-wack and on Vancou-ver Island before open-ing The Lazy Susan.
He kept the overhead down by doing the
cooking himself, while his wife Catherine act-ed as hostess and wait-ress.
Extra help was only hired as needed, mostly on weekends.
Sam used a wood stove for cooking and water heating. He started using a simple icebox, but soon had to purchase a refrigerator and freezer.
The Stirks worked long days, even spend-ing time on their day off doing maintenance and shopping for sup-plies for the restaurant.
To avoid food waste, only grilled items were on the menu during the week, and fresh-frozen vegetables were heated as customers arrived.
On weekdays, The Lazy Susan also offered a “Salesmen’s Special” for 65 cents, includ-ing soup, a sandwich, a green salad, and a bev-erage.
On Sundays, The Lazy Susan’s big day, the spe-cialty was fresh Fraser River salmon.
At the top of the fare, at $2, was T-bone steak.
Home-baked bread and pies completed the meal.
At lunchtime during
the week, men from the sawmill close by were regular customers.
Mrs. Meldrum, who as a young girl occa-sionally assisted with the serving, remembers how the men from the mill confused her im-mensely by each order-ing a differently cooked steak: rare, medium well done, medium rare, well done, or me-dium.
“I am not sure,” she says, “if they all got what they ordered.”
She also recalls a couple from Vancouver “motoring” every Sun-
day to The Lazy Susan for lunch. They were known as “the Wigs” because the husband was wearing a hair-piece.
“Have the Wigs not arrived yet,” the Stirks would ask. “ ... the Wigs are late.”
Mrs. Meldrum fondly remembers Sam Stirk and his wife.
“They were the nic-est people to work for,” she says, “truly nice people.”
Fred Braches is a local historian who lives in
Whonnock.

The City of Pitt Mead-ows has a new director to lead its operations and development de-partment.
Cory Day will replace Kim Grout, who is now the city’s chief adminis-trative officer.
Day has more than 20 years of experience working in municipal government both in
Saskatchewan and the Lower Mainland, most recently with the City of Kamloops as its traf-fic and transportation engineer.
Having graduated in 1994 with a degree in civil engineering from the University of Sas-katchewan, Day brings a fresh and systematic approach to the city’s largest department.
His technical skill set and direct experience with Metro Vancou-ver, TransLink and the Ministry of Transpor-tation support coun-cil’s goals of improving
transportation and infrastruc-ture.
He believes one of the city’s strengths has been in-volving stake-holders and citizens direct-ly in helping to plan, build, and deliver projects.
“I’m committing to continue fostering that strong level of public and staff engagement.”
Grout noted Day’s en-thusiasm and engineer-ing background will be helpful as the city moves forward with its long-term capital plan, as well as other transportation and in-
f rast r uc ture issues.
“We are a smaller mu-nicipality fac-ing all the challenges of the larger cit-ies, but with limited re-sources. Being able to wear various hats
and bringing an engi-neering lens to the dis-cussion will be helpful,” Grout added.
Day officially assumed his new role on July 2.
He is an active out-doorsman who is look-ing forward to trade his tie for a bike helmet to explore the natural beauty that Pitt Mead-ows has to offer.

Townhouse development proposedA 274-unit townhouse development is being proposed for Pitt Meadows.Council received a rezoning application for 19451 Sutton Avenue at a council meeting Tuesday. The parcel of land in question, once owned by the city and now the property of Onni Group, would have to be rezoned from general agriculture to comprehensive development. It is located next to a school district-owned site in the South Bonson area.City staff recommend the rezoning bylaw required for the application be given first and second reading. A second public hearing on the matter is to be held Sept. 2.

As an artist, Vladimir Kolosov doesn’t think it’s weird or strange to be inspired by gelato.
Food, in all its wondrous forms, has always stimulated the mind, not only the tongue.
Think back to the 17th century, the Dutch Golden Age of Art, he says.
“Foods of all kinds are represented in beautiful still-life paintings.”
The paintings are so vivid and “so tasty that you want to eat them” says Kolosov, referencing the art of Dutch masters Willem Kalf, Willem Heda, Peter Claecz and many others.
Travel to Spain and enjoy wonderful still-life of An-tonio Pereda. In France, food inspired Sezanne.
Closer to home, the Art Institute of Chicago pre-sented an exhibition in January titled “Art and Ap-petite: American Painting, Culture, and Cuisine”. It featured 75 paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from the 18th through 20th century.
Two artists Emilie Baltz and Carla Diana created “Likestra” – a musical performance that uses ice cream or gelato as the musical instrument.
“I can continue and it will be a very long list of art-ists who was inspired by foods and particularly by gelato, and ice cream,” Kolosov says.
Through his non-profit organization, the Together in Art Foundation, Kolosov intends to nurture that artistic tradition with a competition for children and youth titled the Art of Gelato.
The competition launched earlier this year in Rimi-ni, Italy at the biggest trade show dedicated to artisan gelato and ice cream.
Winners will be featured in an art show and get a trip to Italy which includes visits to fine art museums in Rome, Florence and Milan.
Kolosov says the goal of the contest is to encourage children and students to discover and express their
inner creativity, to enhance intercultural exchange and communication through visual arts.
The competition also supports a fundraising cam-paign titled “Visual Art can Change Life”.
Funds raised will go to organizations who develop visual arts programs for people with special needs.
Born in the former U.S.S.R., Kolosov studied paint-ing, sculpture and music at Moscow’s Fine Arts Youth School, a program that ran parallel to a regular primary and secondary education.
It was a time when only one movement was official approved and supported – socialist realism with a mission to further of the goals of socialism and com-munism.
It prompted Kolosov to investigate other art move-ments.
He was drawn to surrealists, whose works featured unexpected juxtapositions and dream-like imagery.
A member of the South Delta Artists Guild and Garibaldi Arts Club, Kolosov’s paintings may look Dali-esque but instead chronicle real life.

Too much household clutter is not only unsightly but also can contribute to a stressful environment. Children’s toys are often key contributors to homes overrun with clutter, but with a growing family and birthday and holiday gifts streaming in, it can be challenging for parents to tame toy-related clutter.
Parents who have hosted play dates know that once the fun ends their youngsters’ rooms often appear overrun with toys. Kids have a funny knack of taking out every toy they own without putting their toys away. But with a few tips, anyone can conquer the clutter created by toys.
• Taking inventory helps to determine which toys can ultimately be donated or discarded. Look for duplicates, similar items, broken toys, and items that are seldom used.
• Start to organize. Create groups in which to sort the toys. Dolls should be in one pile, building blocks in another and so on. Figure out a system that works for your family. You may nd that active, sports-related items can be moved to the garage, while board games and books may be moved to a family room or a community closet in the house to free up more space in playrooms. Seasonal toys can be stored away in an attic or basement until they are needed.
• Create accessible storage. Toys should be stored where kids can easily access them. Clear bins are great for storage, and such bins come in a variety of sizes. Construct cubbies in the playroom where these bins can be kept. Be sure they are nearly ground level and not too heavy so that children can easily get to their toys come play time.
• Construct or buy a toy chest. A toy chest can
house larger toys and act as a receptacle for fast cleanup when kids need to tidy up before company arrives. Such chests are good for storing larger cars and trucks or the hordes of stu ed animals kids accumulate.
• Shelving gets things o the oor. Display collectibles that cannot be damaged on shelves. This makes sure they are still on display but not in jeopardy of being mishandled by curious youngsters.
• Donate toys kids no longer use. It can be a tough job, but children should work with you to thin out their toy collections. Designate a certain portion of items that need to go. Bring them to a consignment shop or donate them to kids in need.
Organizing youngsters’ toy collections can be a di cult job, but such organization is essential to keep a tidy home.
How to conquer the kid toy clutter
Organizing a child’s playroom can be a di cult job, but doing so helps to keep clutter in check.

Coach Chris Gill wasn’t cutting his team any slack after two straight losses dropped them from sec-ond to third in the West-ern Lacrosse Association.
The Maple Ridge Bur-rards lost to Coquitlam 7-5 on Saturday.
Coquitlam benefitted from three straight pow-er play goals in the first period.
Defender Garrett Mc-Intosh took a five-minute major for checking from behind, and Coquitlam scored twice.
Gill didn’t want to be critical of the referees, but
said “we were shorthand-ed often in that game.”
Patrick O’Meara and Ben McIntosh each scored twice in Co-quitlam, and Jarret Davis had three assists.
“In general, we weren’t sharp as a team,” he said. “Maybe we didn’t think we had to work hard to win it.”
Their previous two games had been blow-outs over the Adanacs, by scores of 13-4 and 10-5.
Sunday brought a back-to-back game against Burnaby – a rival for sec-ond place, and an 8-7 loss.
Gill didn’t accept that tight scheduling made it a tough matchup.
“If you want to win a Mann Cup, you play back-to-backs.”
Riley Loewen had two goals and four assists,
Davis two goals and two assists, and Ben McIntosh three goals and an assist.
Again the Burrards gave up a significant edge in penalties, as they took 21 minutes on nine in-fractions, compared to Burnaby’s 14 minutes on
seven calls. It was a key loss, be-
cause it dropped their record to 8-7-1, for third place, while Burnaby im-proved to 9-6 and takes second.
With two games left in the regular season,
they are in Langley on Wednesday night, for a 7:45 p.m. game, and next Thursday finish the sea-son in New Westminster.
Burnaby has the Island swing – Victoria and Na-naimo this weekend, and finish against Coquitlam.

Maple Ridge Burrard Curtis ‘Super-man’ Dickson was a big part of Team Canada winning a world field lacrosse championship on Saturday in Colorado.
Dickson scored 18 goals in seven games and was named to the All-World tournament team as an attacking player.
He had a goal in the final on Saturday, as Canada defeated Team USA 8-5 in front of 12,000 fans in Commerce City, Colorado. Canada had lost to the U.S. 10-7 in its tournament opener.
Dickson has been absent from the local Western Lacrosse Association team for the much of this season as he prepared for and played in the world championships.
In the semi-final game, Dickson came up huge. ‘Superman,’ as he is called with the NLL Calgary Roughnecks, had a natural hat trick in the third quarter, then scored a fourth in the final two minutes as Team Canada downed the Iroquois Nationals 12-6 on Thursday.
He was forced to sit out much of the final game with an injury, but will be dressed when the Burrards are in Lang-ley tonight.
Canada had also won the world crown in 1978 and 2006.

McCONOCHIE,AGNES (NAN) MEEK
(nee Hannah)October 26, 1924- July 15, 2014

Kevin McCabe of Courtenay, her step-children, Barbara Arseneau of Nanaimo, Betty Armour (Dave) of Courtenay and Lynda O’Connell (Mike) of Idaho, USA. She is also survived by her brothers Andrew Hannah (Joan), Robert Hannah (Loie) of Maple Ridge and George Hannah of Prince George, sister Elizabeth (Betty) Zaharia (John) of Maple Ridge. Nan will be fondly remembered by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Nan was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) McConochie, parents Andrew and Agnes Hannah, sister Helen (Nellie) and brother in-law Warren Kickbush and stepson William (Bill) McConochie.
Nan was born in East Whitburn, Scotland on Oct 26, 1924. She came to Canada with her parents and brother Andrew in 1928. The family settled in Haney, BC and then Nan moved to Courtenay in 1947.
Nan was a life member of the Royal Purple and held various chairs in the organization. She was always willing to lend a hand and volunteer her time and energy in her community where needed.
After retiring Nan and Bill travelled to various countries. They also enjoyed cruising, boating, RVing and curling. One of her greatest thrills was attending the Scot Tournament of Hearts in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1981 to be a cheerleader for her daughter Sharon. Another unforgettable experience was meeting Queen Elizabeth, when she visited Comox.
Nan will be remembered for her joy of life and infectious laughter. She took great pride in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A special thank-you to Doctors Gornall and Ingrey for their compassionate care.
No Sad Tears For Me I hope by now that some of the initial pain of my departure has begun to wear away…and that the kind carpet of pleasant memories has started to unroll. I only ask one thing: No sad tears for me, please. Every wonderful, delightful thrill, experience and emotion life has to offer has been mine. So no sad tears for me, please.Rather, recall me with a fond smile as the wife, daughter and friend who shared your laughter, tears and dreams through the years. No sad tears for me, please.I lived a goodly span of years and enjoyed them all. I’ve laughed a lot, cried a little…I’ve seen many sunsets and a few fresh dawns, walked in the April rain and watched the wheat fields roll. I loved a man and was loved in return and walked with the hands of youngpeople in my own. No sad tears for me, please.Think of the happy times; The Christmas mornings, the nieces, nephews, graduations, the Thanksgiving dinners and most of all, remember the thousand of times we were all together as family and friends. On Christmas Eve if there is a small star in the sky, lookat it with love and let it come into your heart…and remember me. No sad tears for me, please. A woman never really dies while there are those on Earth who loved her. A woman is never gone as long as there are those who remember her with fondness…and as long as her memory evokes a wistful smile. All who have loved, and who have been loved, have earned a piece of immortality… No sad tears for me, please Author Unknown
