The multi-media introduction in the sintering-plant takes the visitor on a journey through time from the beginnings of the Völklingen Ironworks right up to the present day. From the roof of the ore shed, a view opens up over the town of Völklingen and the active steelworks.Going through the burden shed, the former raw materials storage facility of the ironworks, leads on to the imposing blast furnace. The visitor can ascend to the top platform at a height of 27 metres, where the raw materials were tipped into the blast furnaces. Anyone wanting to go higher still can climb up to the blast furnace viewing-platform where you can enjoy a great panorama view. The top platform is open to visitors along the whole of its length, over 200 metres. Liquid iron was cut off at the foot of the blast furnace: this was one of the hottest places in the ironworks. The path leads on to the coking plant where coal was processed into coke. This is where, between two historical industrial buildings, the paradise has been created for the visitor. In twelve garden spaces a dialogue, the only one of its kind worldwide continues between industrial culture and nature. At the granulating-plant, the laid out picnic area invites the visitor to stop for a rest and relax between colourful aquatic plants and defiant steel. Following the coal rail track and crossing the blower hall footbridge you will arrive at the blower hall. The blowers, giants of iron and steel, used to generate the blast which was piped into the blast furnaces. They are the lungs of the ironworks. It takes two to three hours to follow the well signposted walkway through the World Cultural Heritage Site, which is more than 6000 metres in length. The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks:one of the most exciting places in the world.Catalogue: the Völklingen Ironworks 9,95 €

Become immersed in the first Science Center of the SaarLorLux region: in the fascinating world of iron and the stupendous play of fire, water, earth and wind in the 10000 m2 area of the burden shed, in the Ironworks laboratory and at the open air Ferrodrom®-Sciencepark. The panorama ranges from the beginning of iron extraction to the production of high-tech, stainless steel products. The best iron can only be produced through the use of the four elements, fire, water, earth and air. The fire and wind tornado, the magical ice block and the head-high wind machine make it possible to experience the phenomena with all the senses. Exciting expe-riment and participation stations really convey the thrill of the elements. 100 thrilling experiment and participation stations banish any sense of boredom. At the ScienceCenter Ferrodrom® the visitor is given the op-portunity to stand in the shoes of those earlier engineers and laboratory technicians, albeit in a playful manner. In the former pig-iron factory of the Völklingen Ironworks numerous laboratories were a necessity. Day and night, materials such as coal, coke, ore and the iron itself had to be examined and checked in these laboratories before further processing could take place. The video microscope opens up the thrilling micro-world of iron. Fine patterns were secure evidence for indicating the correct quality. The power of magnetism was implemented for sorting and even transporting material. In the ironworks' laboratories the visitor can be a "crane driver" operating a magnet crane. The outstanding replication of the various transport systems renders a powerful feeling of being 'hands on' at the 'works'. We have extended "State Gifts. 60 Years of Germany" to 5th Sep-tember 2010. The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks presents 187 state gifts from kings and state presidents of 75 countries to the presidents and chancellors of the Federal Republic of Germany. "State Gifts. 60 Years of Germany" is the first comprehensive and systematic presentation that situates these state gifts in the context of the great historical events of their time. For the exhibition we have assembled these "inmost" symbols and treasures of Germany’s state exchanges. For the most part they are held in the highest of estimation by the recipient and are links which help the understanding of culture and involvement with others. In unison with the most impressive images which have shaped the face of the last 60 years of history, the headline photographs of the German press agency, develop a fascinating dialogue. Inserting "State Gifts. 60 Years of Germany" into a dialogue with personal experiences or memories makes for a quite special individual encounter. A catalogue has been issued for the exhibition, 196 page, 24 x 28 cm,

In the breathtaking exhibition "Your brain: think, feel, act". "A crazy exhibition! I’ve never experienced so many compact, practical know-ledge bearing units. Fantastic!" is only one of many enthusiastic posi-tions of visitors. Though the outside of the brain is rather unimpressive: It consists of a grey mass and is similar to a disproportionately large half walnut. This unimpressive exterior houses the greatest development of evolution: our brain. It is where our memory, our consciousness and our personality reside. The brain is far more than an organic machine but is in fact the location of thought and idea. A thousand billion nerve cells are linked in the smallest of spaces to the most flexible, powerful and fastest network. The human ability to think, feel and act is directed purely through the brain. The means to perceive of consciousness, to make intuitive decisions or test new ways of thinking has been rendered 'experiencable' by "Your brain: think, feel, act". Until 25 July, mediate with its 60 experience and participation stations over the almost 1000 m2 of exhibition space of the ore hall, thrilling and unique impressions of the capabilities, but also the twists and turns underlying our brain. The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklinger Ironworks is presenting "Your brain: think, feel, act" in cooperation with the Danish Science Center "Experimentarium" in Copenhagen/Hellerup.A catalogue has been issued for the exhibition, 162 pages, prices from 19,95 €

With "The Celts – Druids. Princes. Warriors. The life of the Celts in the Iron Age 2500 years ago" at the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks we have the first broad insight into this forgotten chapter of our culture. More than 150 exhibits in the 6000 m2 Blower Shed make 1000 years of Celtic culture come alive. The magnificent princely graves of Reinheim, Schwarzenbach, Weiskirchen, Besseringen, Theley and Freisen in Saarland, but fur-thermore those of Rhineland-Palatinate, Luxembourg and Lorraine provide evidence of an extraordinary concentration of wealth, tech-nological know-how and wide ranging contacts. The grave treasures of gold and the imported art works from Southern Europe demons-trate the wealth of the celtic culture most impressively. The unique Celtic rempart of Nonnweiler / Otzenhausen, in North Saarland is one of the most significant benchmark of princely graves. The Celts developed great knowledge about iron and created the beginnings of the metalworking which was to shape the SaarLorLux region at the centre of Europe to this very day. At the most important industrial site of iron production in the world, the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks, one of the high points of iron technology comes alive again with the Celts. The exhibition "The Celts – Druids. Princes. Warriors." displays high quality exhibits from what was a particularly important centre of Europe of 2500 years ago.A catalogue is to be published for the exhibition.

Ferrodrom® and the coal track
In the coking plant, at a temperature of 1300°C, fireturned coal into coke. The terrific heat and pungent smoke made this workplace one of the toughest in the whole of the Völklingen Ironworks. The first coke ovens at the Völklingen Ironworks were set to work in 1897. At this site today, quite unique in Europe, nature meets industrial culture in a truly fascinating dialogue: the paradise of the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks.
At the foot of the inclined ore lift is the entrance to the ScienceCenter Ferrodrom®. On the lower level of the burden shed, over 10,000 m2 in area, the visitor is whisked away into the fascinating world of iron and steel. The four elements fire, water, air and earth, vital to the production of iron, can be experienced at first hand. The history of iron and that of the Völklingen Ironworks become tangible at Ferrodrom®, where more than 100 hands-on exhibits invite the visitor to experiment. On the coal track, visitors can experience a breathtaking panoramic view. It spreads from the blast furnaces with their inclined ore lift (unique worldwide), the ore bunkers, the water tower and the craftsmen's lane of the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks, where today professors and students of Hochschule für Bildende Künste Saar work.
The enormous blowers, which once generated up to300,000 m3 of blast for the blast furnaces, dominatethe blower shed. Today, the blower shed is a fascinatingarena for exhibitions and events. The blowers areunique worldwide. Until September 5 the World CulturalHeritage Site is presenting here the history exhibition"State gifts. 60 years of Germany".
Blower hall
The multi-media journey in time through the history of the Völklingen Ironworks impinges on all the visitor's senses. It is the starting-point on a 6000-metre circuit which leads to seven stations, passing through the world's largest sintering-plant with its enormous ventilators and sintering-machines. In the sintering process, residues from iron production were recycled and ploughed back into the blast furnace system.
At one time, vast quantities of ore were stored in the oreshed. Today, its roof offers the visitor a panoramic view ofVölklingen, the rail track system and the active Saarstahlsteelworks. The panorama also takes in the blower shedand the sintering-plant. Inside the shed, the science center exhibition "Your brain: think, feel, act" will be showed until July 25.
In the burden shed, the 'belly' of the ironworks, 12,000tonnes of raw material were once stored. On the upperlevel, railway wagons brought in the raw materials; onthe lower level, the monorail cars with which those rawmaterials were taken up to the blast furnaces were loaded. The burden shed, one of the first large reinforced concrete buildings of its kind, was built between 1911 and 1913, and is now the arena for the exhibition "Ouverture – Centre Pompidou-Metz".

The monorail cars ran along the top platform (27 metersabove ground level) and filled the six blast furnaces withraw materials. At 45 meters, the viewing-platform offersthe visitor a fascinating view out over the World CulturalHeritage Site and the industrial landscape along the Saar. Then the walkway leads down to the tapping-level, wherethe molten pig iron was tapped from the blast furnace.

The fascination of theVölklingen IronworksIn 1994, the Völklingen Ironworks becamethe first plant from the heyday of industria-lisation to be declared a UNESCO WorldHeritage Site. For more than a century, the Völklingen Ironworks had shaped the lives of many thousands of people. Today, it is the only fully preserved ironworks from the 19th and 20th centuries and an extra- ordinary monument and sightseeing locationfeaturing high quality cultural exhibitionsand thrilling projects.
The largest concentration of UNESCO WorldHeritages in EuropeNowhere else in Europe is the density ofUnesco World Heritage Sites higher than in the greater region of SaarLorLux also comprising Alsace and the Palatinate.Roman monuments such as the Porta Nigrain Trier, the Cathedral of Speyer, the baroquejewel of the Place Stanislas in Nancy, the Luxembourg fortress, Strasbourg's gothic cathedral and medieval quarter at its city centre and the baroque fortification of Vauban in Longwy. And in the midst of all this is the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks.
Ouverture – CentrePompidou-MetzExhibition
Not far from the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Volklingen Ironworks another lively cultural site of the 21st century has come into existence with the opening of the Centre Pompidou-Metz. The audacious creation by architects Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines offers a unique exhibition space Europe wide, over a total area of more than 10,000m2, three exhibition galleries and the Grande Nef.From 12 May 2010 the Centre Pompidou-Metz opens its first exhibition: "Chefs-d’œuvre? – Meisterwerke?" (Masterpieces?).The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks is showing, in coope-ration with the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the first insight into the architecture and the masterpieces. www.centrepompidou-metz.fr
