GETTING STARTED
MAP INTELLIGENCE EXCEL CLIENTS
The Map Intelligence Excel Client (MI Excel Client) allows you to configure server and map settings, design and
configure the various types of analytical layers and save these configurations as templates.
Some End Users may only wish to load templates to view maps and layers designed by others. The Map
Intelligence Excel Client Viewer (MI Excel Client Viewer) is a streamlined version of the standard client and only
allows users to load predefined templates and view maps. The MI Excel Client Viewer does not allow any
configuration of Map Intelligence.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you install either of the MI Clients (full mode or view mode only) then install the other one, the original
installation will be overwritten.
The appropriate client should be loaded for each type of user.
The client installation is a two-step process.
1. Installing the MI Excel Client or the MI Excel Client Viewer.
2. Adding the MapIntelligence.xla file to the Excel Add-Ins list.
BEFORE BEGINNING THE INSTALLATION
Please ensure that all the prerequisite requirements are met before installing the client. The full list of
requirements can be found in the Prerequisites section of the MI Client Excel 4.1.03 Readme.

INSTALLING THE MI EXCEL CLIENT
The Client installation will install the Map Intelligence.xla and related files into the directory specified during
the installation. The default installation directory is
“…Program Files\Map Intelligence\Excel Client”.
You will need to have local Machine Administrator Privileges to be able to install the Client.
In some instances the screenshots in this guide may show an earlier version number to the version you are installing, this means that there have been no changes to the screen since the release shown.
1. From the Map Intelligence Menu, click on either the Client Install or the Client Viewer Install, to begin
installing the Client.
For further information on the type of Client which should be installed for particular End Users, see Map Intelligence Excel Clients.
If you have downloaded Map Intelligence, you will need to extract the contents of the zip file into a location of choice. Then change directory to that location. There you will see the files and directories that comprise the Map Intelligence Excel Client. To get the Map Intelligence Menu, you will need to run the start.exe program.
The Welcome to the Map Intelligence Excel Client Setup dialog box will appear.

2. Click the Next button.
The License Agreement dialog box will appear.

3. It is important that you read and understand the terms and conditions of the license agreement and that
you are suitably authorized to accept its terms. If so, click the I accept the agreement radio button, then
click the Next button to accept the terms and conditions.
The Select Destination Location dialog box will appear.

4. Click the Browse button if the default path is unsuitable. Navigate to the location where you want the
program installed and click the OK button.
5. Click the Next button to continue.
The Select Start Menu Folder dialog box will appear.

6. Click the Browse button if the default Start Menu Folder is unsuitable. Navigate to the folder where you
want the program shortcut to appear, then click the OK button.
If you do not want the program’s shortcut to appear in the Start Menu, check the Don’t create any icons checkbox.
The Ready to Install dialog box will appear with a summary of the current program settings.
7. If you are satisfied with the current settings, click the Install button to begin installing the MI Excel Client.
Click the Back button if you want to review or change any settings.

8. Click the Finish button to complete this step of the installation.

MI SELECTION TOOLKIT
The MI Selection Toolkit is required in order for the Selection feature of Map Intelligence to return selected
data to the spreadsheet. The MI Selection Toolkit installation will install the Microsoft SOAP Toolkit 2.0 SP2 and
register the MapIntelligenceSelection.dll file.
You will need to have local Machine Administrator Privileges to be able to install the MI Selection Toolkit.
The MI Selection Toolkit needs to be installed on all end user machines that want to take advantage of Map Intelligence’s Selection feature.
INSTALLING THE MI SELECTION TOOLKIT
1. From the Map Intelligence CD Menu, click on Selection Toolkit Install, to begin installing the MI Selection
Toolkit
The Welcome dialog box will appear. Please read the instructions and warnings on the screen.

2. Click the Next button.
3. The Information dialog box will appear. This explains the files that will be installed on the machine.

4. Click the Next button.
The License Agreement dialog box will appear.

5. It is important that you read and understand the terms and conditions of the license agreement and that
you are suitably authorized to accept its terms. If so, click the Yes button to accept the terms and
conditions.
The Choose Destination Location dialog box will appear.

6. Click the Browse button if the default path is unsuitable. Navigate to the location where you want the
program installed and click the OK button.
7. Click the Next button.
The Start Copying Files dialog box will appear.

8. Click the Next button.
9. An Information message will appear informing you the Microsoft SOAP Toolkit setup is about to start. Click
the OK button.

10. Click the Next button.
11. The End-User License Agreement window will appear.

12. It is important that you read and understand the terms and conditions of the license agreement and that
you are suitably authorized to accept its terms. If so, select the I accept the terms in the License
Agreement radio button and click the Next button.
The Customer Information dialog box will appear.

13. Complete the User Name and Organization fields and click the Next button.

14. Select the Complete option.

If you use a proxy server to contact Map Intelligence, you may need to specify the name and port number
of the proxy server.
17. Check the Use a proxy server to contact Map Intelligence checkbox, enter the Proxy Name and Proxy Port
fields.

18. To close the Selection Toolkit Configuration dialog box, click OK button
A message box will appear saying that your settings were saved successfully.

19. Click OK button
The Setup Summary dialog box will appear.

20. Click the Finish button. The MI Selection toolkit will now be installed on your machine. Please ensure that
this toolkit is installed on all other user machines that would need to make use of the Selection feature.

UNINSTALLING THE MI SELECTION TOOLKIT
If you want to uninstall the MI Selection Toolkit, you will need to uninstall both MapIntelligenceSelection.dll
and Microsoft SOAP Toolkit 2.0 SP2. These are two separate operations. The steps are outlined below:
1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
2. From the Add/Remove Programs window, select Map Intelligence Selection Toolkit and click the Remove
button.
3. A Confirm File Deletion dialog box will appear. Click the OK button.
4. The Maintenance Complete window will appear. Click the Finish button.
5. From the Add/Remove Programs window, select Microsoft SOAP Toolkit 2.0 SP2 and click the Remove
button.
6. Click the Yes button on the Confirmation dialog box. The MI Selection Toolkit will now be removed from
the machine. Note that the Map Intelligence Selection feature will no longer be able to return selected
data to the spreadsheet.

ADDING THE MAPINTELLIGENCE.XLA FILE TO EXCEL ADD-INS LIST
The final step in the installation of the MI Excel Client requires the Map Intelligence.xla file to be added to the
Excel Add-Ins list.
MICROSOFT OFFICE EXCEL 2013
1. Open Microsoft Excel.
2. From the File tab, click Options
3. From Excels Options, click the Add-Ins category. A list of Add-ins will be displayed.
4. From the Manage: drop-down list, ensure Excel Add-ins is selected.
5. Click the Go… button. The Add-Ins window will open

6. Click the Browse button and navigate to the where you installed the MI Excel Client.
7. Select the Map Intelligence.xla file and click OK. Map Intelligence will appear in the Add-Ins list.

8. Click the OK button.
9. The Map Intelligence menu will now appear as a drop-down menu on the Excel Add-Ins Tab.

1. Open Microsoft Excel.
2. From the File tab, click Options
3. From Excels Options, click the Add-Ins category. A list of Add-ins will be displayed.

1. Open Microsoft Excel.
2. Click the Office button in the top left corner.
3. Click the Excel Options button . The Excel Options window will open.
4. From the options panel on the left, select Add-Ins. A list of Add-ins will be displayed
5. From the Manage: drop-down list, ensure Excel Add-ins is selected.
6. Click the Go… button. The Add-Ins window will open

VERSIONS PRIOR TO MICROSOFT OFFICE EXCEL 2007
1. Open Microsoft Excel.
2. From the Tools menu, select Add-Ins…

3. Click the Browse button and navigate to the where you installed the MI Excel Client.

The Map Intelligence menu will now appear on the Excel menu bar each time you open Excel.
