The power unit and trailer are not designed to be detachable. TRUCK + TRAILER: For this vehicle, the power unit or single unit truck is detachable from the trailer. TRUCK + TRAILER + TRAILER: This vehicle combination consists of three units that are detachable from one another, including any power unit with two trailers. OTHER SIGN CONFIGURATIONS The signs shown to the left are frequently used in situations where severe load restrictions apply. The gross vehicle weight (Figure 2) or axle weight (Figure 3) for any vehicle is limited regardless of the number of axles or axle configuration. The sign shown in Figure 4 can be used to combine the load posting information from both Figure 2 and Figure 3. For all load posting signs, the gross vehicle weight and/or axle weight cannot exceed the limit shown on the posted sign, regardless of how much of the total weight of the vehicle is on the bridge. (2) (4) (3) BRIDGE LOAD POSTING Weight limit signs on bridges are intended to prevent loads that cause stresses above the safe limit from crossing a bridge. Figure 1a, shown to the left, is the most common bridge load posting sign. Figure 1b is the modified version of the sign. The third silhouette has been updated to represent a truck with multiple trailers more clearly. As a result of a phased implementation to update all signs, both versions of the sign exist on posted bridges today. Both are intended to portray one-unit, two-unit and three-unit weight limits. The signs in Figure 1 use typical configurations to show easily recognizable vehicles, as it is not possible for signs to represent every vehicle configuration. It is important to note that the number of axles shown on each silhouette is a representative example only. Actual axle configuration may differ. (1a) (1b) MICHIGAN 2021 Truck Operators Map Department of Transportation RAILROAD CROSSINGS Motorists are required to stop when lights are flashing or crossing gates are activated at a railroad crossing and are prohibited from driving around crossing gates when they are lowered. WORK ZONE SPEED LIMITS When entering and passing through a work zone in which a normal lane or part of it is closed due to highway construction or maintenance, the driver must not exceed 45 mph unless a different speed limit is determined for that work zone. In Michigan, fines may be doubled for violations in work zones. YIELDING TO AN AUTHORIZED EMERGENCY VEHICLE (AEV) Drivers are required to immediately pull over to the right and stop upon the approach from either direction of an AEV with lights activated. When approaching a stationary AEV with lights activated, drivers proceeding in the same direction must reduce their speed by at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit and, unless otherwise directed by a police officer, must proceed with caution and yield the right of way by moving over one or more lanes. If yielding the right of way is not possible due to weather, road conditions, MACKINAC BRIDGE TOLL (Mackinaw City to St. Ignace) 906-643-7600 Passenger Vehicle .......................................................... $4.00 Passenger Vehicle w/Trailer (per axle) ............................ 2.00 Motor Home (per axle)...................................................... 5.00 Semi-Tractor/Trailer (per axle) ......................................... 5.00 Motorcycle ........................................................................ 4.00 Commuter Card Available See www.Michigan.gov/MBA for more information INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE TOLL (Sault Ste. Consult the Michigan Vehicle Code for specific provisions concerning the following safety laws: SPEED LIMITS: Non-freeway statewide speed limit unless otherwise posted ....................... 55 mph Limited access freeway speed limit unless otherwise posted ...................... 70 mph Freeway truck and school bus speed limit .............................................. 65 mph (if speed limit is 65, otherwise 55) Minimum freeway speed.......................................................................... 55 mph Towing speed for passenger vehicles is the posted speed limit. Drivers also are required to be able to maintain control of their vehicles and stop within an assured clear distance ahead regardless of the posted speed limit. This may mean driving well below the posted limit in inclement weather, heavy traffic, or other conditions. SAFETY BELTS AND CHILD RESTRAINTS Drivers, front-seat passengers regardless of age, and all passengers ages 8 through 15 are required to wear properly adjusted safety belts. Children younger than age 4 must ride in a child restraint system in the rear seat, if the vehicle has a rear seat. If all available rear seats are occupied by children less than 4, then a child less than 4 may be positioned in a rear-facing child restraint system in the front seat if the airbag is deactivated. Children age 4 and older must ride in a car seat or booster seat until they are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall or 8 years old, whichever occurs first. TEXTING WHILE DRIVING A person shall not read, type, or send a text message while operating a motor vehicle. LITTERING IS AGAINST THE LAW It is presumed under Michigan law that the driver, titled owner, or lessee of a vehicle or vessel is responsible for litter that is thrown, dumped, deposited, placed, or left from the vehicle or vessel on public or private property or water. *Information accurate at time of printing or the immediate presence of vehicles or pedestrians in parallel moving lanes, or if the driver is on a public roadway that does not have at least two adjacent lanes proceeding in the same direction as the stationary AEV, the driver is required to proceed with due care and caution and reduce his or her speed by at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit or follow the direction of the police officer. SHARE THE ROAD WITH BICYCLISTS Motorists are reminded that bicyclists are permitted to ride on most roadways in Michigan. State law generally requires drivers to pass at a safe distance of at least 3 feet when overtaking a bicycle going in the same direction, and drivers may pass a bicycle in a no-passing zone if it is safe to do so. Bicyclists are reminded that, as legal roadway users, they are required to obey all traffic laws, signs and signals, and to use hand signals when turning, stopping or slowing down. Bicycles must generally be operated as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway unless turning left, continuing straight in a lane of traffic turning right, passing another bicycle or vehicle going in the same direction, or the roadway is unsafe or reasonably unusable by bicycles. WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS MDOT’s Mi Drive website has vital information for truckers, including construction restrictions, permits, and rules and guidelines. Visit www.Michigan.gov/Drive and click on the “Truckers” link. HOW TO DRIVE A ROUNDABOUT l Slow down as you approach the roundabout. l Use the guide signs and lane designation markers to choose the appropriate lane for the intended destination. l Roundabouts are designed to accommodate trucks and other large vehicles. l Trucks require more room to turn and may use the mountable truck apron, the raised pavement around the centralized island, for additional space. l Drivers should be aware of large vehicles on the approach and within the roundabout. l Do not drive next to a truck or try to pass a truck on the approach or while traveling in a roundabout. TRUCK: The single unit vehicle has a power unit and trailer that form one vehicle.

OTHER SIGN CONFIGURATIONSThe signs shown to the left are frequently used in situations where severe load restrictions apply.

(2)

(4)

(3)

BRIDGE LOAD POSTINGWeight limit signs on bridges are intended to prevent loads that cause stresses above the safe limit from crossing a bridge.

RAILROAD CROSSINGSMotorists are required to stop when lights are flashing or crossing gates are activated at a railroad crossing and are prohibited from driving around crossing gates when they are lowered.

WORK ZONE SPEED LIMITSWhen entering and passing through a work zone in which a normal lane or part of it is closed due to highway construction or maintenance, the driver must not exceed 45 mph unless a different speed limit is determined for that work zone. In Michigan, fines may be doubled for violations in work zones.

YIELDING TO AN AUTHORIZED EMERGENCY VEHICLE (AEV)Drivers are required to immediately pull over to the right and stop upon the approach from either direction of an AEV with lights activated. When approaching a stationary AEV with lights activated, drivers proceeding in the same direction must reduce their speed by at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit and, unless otherwise directed by a police officer, must proceed with caution and yield the right of way by moving over one or more lanes. If yielding the right of way is not possible due to weather, road conditions,

+Gross vehicle weight may not exceed 80,000 lbs. or an overall gross weight on any group of consecutive axles equaling:

Where W = maximum weight (in pounds) that can be carried by 2 or more consecutive axles to the nearest 500 lbs., L = distance (in feet) between the outer axles of 2 or more consecutive axles, and N = number of axles in the combination. An exception is granted for a 5-axle vehicle with 2 consecutive sets of tandem axles. That vehicle configuration may carry a gross load of 34,000 lbs. for each tandem if the first and last axles of the consecutive sets of tandem axles are at least 36’ apart. However, if the gross vehicle weight exceeds 80,000 lbs., the above formula cannot be used and gross vehicle loading is controlled by Normal and Designated Loading.

MICHIGAN LAWSFor more information regarding Michigan traffic laws,

visit: www.Michigan.gov/MSPThis summary is for general information only. Consult the Michigan Vehicle Code for specific provisions concerning the following safety laws:

SPEED LIMITS:Non-freeway statewide speed limit unless otherwise posted ....................... 55 mphLimited access freeway speed limit unless otherwise posted ...................... 70 mph Freeway truck and school bus speed limit .............................................. 65 mph (if speed limit is 65, otherwise 55) Minimum freeway speed.......................................................................... 55 mphTowing speed for passenger vehicles is the posted speed limit.

Drivers also are required to be able to maintain control of their vehicles and stop within an assured clear distance ahead regardless of the posted speed limit. This may mean driving well below the posted limit in inclement weather, heavy traffic, or other conditions.

SAFETY BELTS AND CHILD RESTRAINTSDrivers, front-seat passengers regardless of age, and all passengers ages 8 through 15 are required to wear properly adjusted safety belts.

LITTERING IS AGAINST THE LAWIt is presumed under Michigan law that the driver, titled owner, or lessee of a vehicle or vessel is responsible for litter that is thrown, dumped, deposited, placed, or left from the vehicle or vessel on public or private property or water.

*Information accurate at time of printing

or the immediate presence of vehicles or pedestrians in parallel moving lanes, or if the driver is on a public roadway that does not have at least two adjacent lanes proceeding in the same direction as the stationary AEV, the driver is required to proceed with due care and caution and reduce his or her speed by at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit or follow the direction of the police officer.

SHARE THE ROAD WITH BICYCLISTSMotorists are reminded that bicyclists are permitted to ride on most roadways in Michigan.

HOW TO DRIVE A ROUNDABOUTlSlow down as you approach the roundabout.

lUse the guide signs and lane designation markers to choose the appropriate lane for the intended destination.

lRoundabouts are designed to accommodate trucks and other large vehicles.

lTrucks require more room to turn and may use the mountable truck apron, the raised pavement around the centralized island, for additional space.

lDrivers should be aware of large vehicles on the approach and within the roundabout.

lDo not drive next to a truck or try to pass a truck on the approach or while traveling in a roundabout.
