Football is really coming homeIt’s almost here. The World Cupin Brazil, a more credible homeof football, gets startedtomorrow (Thursday).

In the Isle of Man, of course, we areentitled to support any team fromthe British Isles. In theory, thatmeans a choice of up to five teams. In reality it means England.

Already, for England, the World Cuphas thrown up some oddities beforeit has even started: Southamptonmanaged to reduce the number oftheir players in the squad betweenthe time Roy Hodgson named his 23and the plane touching down inBrazil. (In fairness, ManchesterUnited spent most of last seasonbattling to reduce the number oftheir players in the England team, but that was prior to the final squad

being announced.)

Meanwhile, Roy Keane haswithdrawn himself from the WorldCup for a second time. No word onwhether he’d found himself in astudio next to Mick McCarthy priorto quitting the ITV team.

Here’s a reminder of some of therules to abide by while watching theWorld Cup.

• England players do not dive orcheat. Oh no. That is left to theother teams, while England takethe moral high ground, whichcoincidentally is easily spottedfrom the early plane home.

• If the ball lands at StevenGerrard’s feet, within half a mileof the opposition’s goal, any ITVcommentator must shout his

name loudly in anticipation of apiledriver shot about to go intothe stands.

• In the unlikely event that Englandmake it through to the knock-outstage, every single newspaperand television programme will dosomething about whether thesports psychologist has doneanything specific with the teamwith regard to penalty shoot outs.

• Italian players must be describedas ‘cultured’ every time one oftheir passes reaches the intendedtarget.

• Diego Maradona will turn upsomewhere and look even morelike Marlon Brando in drag.

• The following words must beworked into every single

commentary: samba, carnival, flying down to Rio, Pele.

• There will be astonishment fromcommentators when opponentsof Spain try to, you know, actuallyscore a goal.

• Anyone who has a particularlygood World Cup will be linkedwith Manchester City.

• Despite the time difference beingnot too different from the 1986World Cup in Mexico, it will stillbe difficult to remember the timewhen you actually enjoyed seeingGary Lineker in a footballprogramme.

Four-times Parish Walk winnerJock Waddington is taking it easythis year. He is only planning to goto Peel.In fairness, it will be because, just a week beforethe Manx Telecom Parish Walk, which takes placeon June 21, he is taking part in a 100 mile racewalk in the Netherlands.Besides, the definition of taking it easy appearsto be a little different if you can walk around thegrueling 85-mile Parish Walk in about 15 hours.Jock dominated the Parish Walk, winning fourtimes on the bounce, from 2008-11. The last ofthose saw him complete the course, that takesyou to every parish in the Island, in a time of 15hours, one minute and 48 seconds. In 2012 hedid not race, but was back last year, finishingthird. He told the Manx Advertiser: ‘I am going to Peelthis year that is the plan. I am off to Holland torace the week before.’But he says he aims to complete the courseagain in future years. ‘I don’t think it will becompetitively, I will just try to notch up 10 finishesand call it day.’He now competes in race walks across Europe, but it was the Parish Walk that opened his eyesto the sport and, he said, when a Manxcontingent travels to compete in a long-distancewalk, it can take some opponents by surprise justhow good they are.We all know which race we have to thank forthat.Jock came to the Parish Walk relatively late, after

joining the Merchant Navy at the age of 16 andtravelling around the world. His first time in therace was only 10 years ago. Now, there are few people better qualified thanJock to offer advice to Parish Walk competitors, including debutants.‘The first thing is have a target,’ he said. ‘A lot ofpeople say “I will see how far I can go” – as soonas it starts to hurt you, or it goes wrong, that is it.If you say “get to Peel” you have a choice and sohave a chance.‘Don’t go too fast. It is very easy to get sucked in.‘Nutrition and liquids are important. Keep eating, keep drinking to replace energy you are using onthe walk around.’He added: ‘For the complete first-timer, it is a biglearning curve. The first time I did it in 2004, I haddone two and a half months’ training and I wasconvinced I would get round through mentalattitude.

‘I didn’t, I got as far as Kirk Michael and thought Iwas going to die. Enthusiasm will only get you sofar.’Undeterred, Jock was back the next year and thistime, he made it round the entire courseHe has completed the course eight times andlast year, after his break in 2012, came in thirdbehind Michael George and Richard Gerrard.Michael’s winning time was an astonishing14.44.49, with Richard at 14.50.59. Jock came inat 15.12.39.The actual record time is shared by RichardGerrard and Vinny Lynch, who shared the 2012title in an incredible 14.42.32.Jock’s best in 2011 is the seventh fastest timeever. He thinks there is a good chance the currentParish Walk record will last for a number of years. But he added that it’s not just about those at thehead of the field.‘The Parish Walk has such a special aspect for thegeneral public. More or less everybody must beinvolved. If they are not competing they knowsomeone who is or they are offering food anddrink out on the route.’He said there were many special moments overthe years, while his favourite and least favouritesections of the course have changed withdiffering experiences. One thing still stands out.‘The first finish is a brilliant feeling: you startblubbing like a big girl!’• The Manx Telecom Parish Walk starts at the

National Sports Centre in Douglas at 8am.

There’s a special kind of retailtherapy going on at the GaietyTheatre from Friday. The Manx Operatic Society ispresenting the smash hitmusical comedy for all thefamily Little Shop of Horrorsat the Gaiety Theatre fromFriday, June 13 to Saturday,June 21.The title may contain the word horrorbut there are plenty of comedymoments in what is, also, a love story.

Little Shop of Horrors follows the taleof a down-and-out Skid Row floralassistant, played by Dean Callow, whobecomes an overnight sensation whenhe discovers an exotic plant.

Soon the plant, Audrey ll, grows intoan ill-tempered, R&B-singing carnivorewho offers him fame and fortune inexchange for feeding its growingappetite, finally revealing itself to bean alien creature poised for globaldomination.

Tracey McCann plays Audrey, theobject of Seymour's affections butdating the sadistic Dentist OrinScrivello played by David Lyons(pictured, with Isaac Murtagh).

John Short plays the grouchy pennypincher Mr Mushnik, owner ofMushnik's Flower Shop, and MikeBoner voices Audrey II, the strange andunidentified plant.

Jo Clucas, Kate Cowley and AliceQuayle take on the 3 Ronettes.

With catchy music, quirky charactersand brilliant comedy moments LittleShop of Horrors became one of thelongest-running Off-Broadway shows ofall time.

The musical has become a householdname thanks to a highly successful filmversion and a score by the songwritingteam of Howard Ashman and AlanMenken, who redefined the animatedmusical film with Disney’s The LittleMermaid, Beauty and the Beast andAladdin.

The society has been working on theshow, sponsored by Isle of Man Bankand supported by 3FM, since Februaryand welcomes back director AnthonyWilliams, who has previously workedwith the society on many showsincluding Chess and Beauty and theBeast.

A spokesman for the society said:‘Anthony is such a great director withabsolute attention to detail. The qualityof his productions are always second tonone, driven by his clear love oftheatre and absolute focus onproviding the audience with thehighest quality show.’

It should perhaps come as nosurprise to learn that the manregarded as the world’s greatestexplorer had already been to theIsle of Man prior to his first‘Evening with..’ show in 2012.But it may raise an eyebrow to learn why SirRanulph Fiennes was in the Island about 30years ago.

Sir Ranulph, who is coming back to the Isleof Man later this month for another show, atthe Villa Marina, was in the Island in 1983 tooversee the burying of a golden egg – oneof 12 that chocolate firm Cadbury hidaround the British Isles.

‘They wanted someone with special forcestraining so we could carry out the diggingwithout being observed,’ the explorer told

the Manx Advertiser.

As far as adventures go, it appears to beone of the least risky undertaken by a manwho has run seven marathons in seven dayson seven different continents – just weeksafter a heart attack, discovered a lost city inArabia, cut off his own frostbitten fingertipsand scaled Everest.

And that’s barely the tip of the iceberg.

He’s also the first person to have reachedboth poles, as well as the first tocircumnavigate the globe along the Polaraxis, all with Charles Burton.

So which has been the toughestachievement? He said it was discoveringthat lost city – known as the Atlantis of theSands - after numerous attempts.

‘The one that took the longest to achieve, over 26 years, with eight major 4WD

expeditions into the desert,’ he said.

And success only came by chance. Normallythe Sultanate of Oman did not givepermission for filming, but it had beengranted for the purpose of searching for thelost city. But, after two months of looking,Sir Ranulph overheard security guards fromthe Omani ministry, who had accompaniedthem, speculating that there was nogenuine attempt to find the city.

So, he ordered digging to start as soon aspossible, even though there were noindications they were in the right place.Within a fortnight, a 10-inch Persian chessset had been discovered and the lost citywas found – although its history is still thesource of much debate.

Sir Ranulph’s expeditions have raisedmillions for charity and always see him testhimself to the limit.

None more so than scaling the north face ofthe Eiger, in spite of a fear of heights.

One of the reasons for that was he normallyovercomes fear by confronting it. Thatcertainly worked where spiders wereconcerned, Sir Ranulph overcoming hisarachnophobia in the toughest possibleway.

He found himself in the desert after beingseconded to the army of the Sultan ofOman and, as well as a number of soldiers,he spent a lot of his time in the company oflarge spiders.

‘I was more frightened of looking a wimp,’he said. ’I’m talking five-inch, furry leggedlarge spiders - and you are in shorts andone of these things comes around on yourthigh. You didn’t scream, because youdidn’t want to lose respect.

‘After about three years in the desert Irealised these things were all over the placeand they didn’t bite and you got used to it.’

However, despite taking on the Eiger andtaking part in three Everest expeditions, culminating in becoming the oldest Britonto reach the summit in 2009, he claims thathe is still not keen on heights and tries tostick to ground level.

If someone made a film with a leadcharacter who achieved everything that SirRanulph has, apart from having to create anepic that would be double the length of theLord of the Rings trilogy, it would bedismissed as too fanciful.

He is a living legend, as simple as that.

• An Evening with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, organised by the Sporting and DiningClub, takes place in the Royal Hall, VillaMarina, on June 26. Tickets, throughthe Villa, are priced £18.36 to £23.46.There are also dinner packages availableexclusively through the Sporting andDining Club, telephone 617049.
