Message from ChairpersonIn 2017, with great excitement and enthusiasm, Manushi is celebrating its 25 years of operation as a non-pro!t organization. In this period, it has continuously served the poor, low income, indigenous and marginalized producers and supported the poorest women in its areas of operation with its micro !nance services and other development programs.

Manushi as a member of WFTO, founding member of the Fair Trade Group Nepal and the World Fair Trade Organization Asia, Manushi has been dedicated to fair trade principles such as creating opportunities, ensuring safe and healthy working conditions, building capacity, and minimizing environmental foot-print while always remaining transparent and accountable to its stakeholders.

Tie & DyeEmerging in the mid-1960s, tie-dye is a resist-dyeing technique which is created by folding, crumpling or twisting garments with strings and rubbers so as to stop the dye from getting spread to other parts of the garment. It is traditional art and cra# used by our grandparents as an artistic product.

Nowadays, a majority of tie-dyes are produced with natural & Azo free chemical dyes. Even everyday used household items such as beetroot juice, nettle, turmeric, co$ee/tea etc can do the trick for coloring. In order to raise the pH level and start the reaction, soda ash and salt are added directly to the dye because it allows the colors to stain the fabric easily and stay brighter for a long period of time.

Depending on the thickness and type of fabrics any piece of clothing can be tie-dyed easily. "e most popular tie-dye textiles are bed sheets, cushion covers, dresses, t-shirts, shawls, kitchen dinning fabrics, accessories etc. Aesthetically pleasing and easy to make tie-dyes are a form of artistic expression which showcases a sense of free spirit and love for peace. Tie-dyed products have intricate details and embellishments which transform even a boring, plain garment into a colorful explosion of fascinating motifs and designs.


MEENA GURUNGMeena has been a part of Manushi since the establishment of the organization. She came to Manushi in response to a training advertisement and she was in the first training batch of Manushi. She now works in the tie-dye department as a team leader. Due to the poor economic condition of her family, she started to work at an early age of sixteen. She shares about the difficulties she faced at the beginning of this endeavor. Due to the lack of market and amateur workers, the products often got dumped and she used to get her salary late. Now things have changed. She now gives training to new employees. She feels that Manushi helped her to become an independent woman and also helped to raise the living standard of her family.

GANGA MAHARJANGanga Maharjan has been working at Manushi for last 12 years. She lives in a joint family with her husband and 19-years old son. Before joining Manushi she had some sewing skills. Later, she joined Manushi as a trainee and further developed her skills. Ganga now works at Manushi in the sewing department. She remembers those days when she was hesitate to talk with strangers, but now she has enough confident to talk with diverse and large group of people. She says she did the great work joining Manushi. Manushi helped her to uplift her economic condition and capacity that would be useful for her lifetime. Now she is no longer financially dependent on her family.

Natural FiberNatural !bers are longer and thinner substances produced with the help of plants and animals that can be twisted and turned into !laments, thread, or rope. "e most common plant !bers are cotton, hemp, jute, bamboo and #ax with the sources for !ber including leaves, stems, seed hairs and husk !bers. Similarly, the most common animal !bers are silk, wool and sinew. Bundles of years back, natural !ber as treads were used as household materials but now, the value of natural !ber has extended beyond just materials to make clothes, shawls, baskets and other decorative items. Most of the Natural Fibers contains high suppleness, resistance and tensile strength so, these !bers are durable and sturdy. Natural !ber is used to make our clothes so$ and strong also used to decorate our living spaces.

"e indigenous people comprised of -Magar, Tamang, Newar, Chettri, Brahmin, etc inhabiting the di%erent parts of Nepal, practice some traditional technology of weaving handloom by utilizing natural !bers as raw materials


DIVYATARA TULADHARDibya Tara Tuladhar, the Vice Chairperson of Manushi is a determined social entrepreneur; who seeks to empower women and strengthen their capacity. She has been associated with Manushi for more than 17 years. She has been actively engaged in the extraction of natural fiber from nettle, hemp and banana. She is a pioneer in the field of banana fiber. Before her initiation, banana’s thumb was a waste material but now it is a raw material which can be used to make stunning dresses, shawls, bags and decorative items. She has currently employed 21 staffs under the project in Nawalparasi district. The women are trained in banana fiber project. The products which are developed from the fiber are apparels and bags. They are eco-friendly, fashionable and durable. These products are targeted to export in the international markets, but it was not easy to reach international market. She went through numbers of hurdles now with the help of Manushi her products are being able to reach to international market.

HARI GOPAL CHYASEHari Gopal Chyase, the producer of Manushi was born in an entrepreneur family. His forefathers had also been involved in the cottage industry for many years. He decided to step in and take this family business forward. He is a good textile designer and trainer. He is providing training on what he had learnt to others in different places of Nepal. He has expanded his family micro enterprise to the new level by promoting organic material in Nepal. During his lifetime in micro enterprise development, he had faced many problems. The main problem was lack of market space, which led him to associate with Manushi. With the help of Manushi, he is now able to produce variety of unique products as demand by international market.

WeavingNepalese weaving is rich in terms of art and culture. Weaving is all about two distinct sets of yarns or threads interlacing at right angle to form a fabric or cloth. Weaving can be done either through hand or machine. Hand woven are a fabric item woven by hand. Various products with diverse patterns can be created through weaving such as coats, mu&ers, mats, carpets, belt, kitchen accessories, bags etc. Beyond its creativity, tightly woven woolen fabric are comfortable, warm and cozy in winter whereas loosely woven and !ne threads clothes are cool, breathable and stylish for summer. In Nepal, hand woven is a traditional skill passed down through generations.


GAURA GIRIGaura Giri is a weaving producer of Manushi. He had spent his childhood in Balmandir, Kathmandu. He is a hardworking producer, has developed his own small scale enterprise. He had faced many difficulties at the beginning. Although his products were marvellous, he was not able to reach in the main stream of market. Manushi helped him to form a bridge between the market and his product. His life changed after he came in contact with Manushi. Now, the relationship between Manushi and his work has a decent identity in the market. He has been working with Manushi since last eighteen years. Gaura’s enterprise makes hand-woven clothes such as table clothes, room décor items, clothes for interior of cars, gloves, belts, blankets, scarfs etc. He uses diverse raw materials such as cotton, flax, silk, wool, rayon, nylon, allo, jute etc.

Metal In Nepal history of metal cra! dates back to the medieval period as a metal crest was found in the Changunarayan temple which is believed to be oldest temple in Nepal. Nepal has a renowned name in the line of metal cra!s with products like: metal statues, jewelries, singing bowls and other decorative items. "e process of manufacturing of metal cra!s start from casting, carving to polishing by di#erent methods according to the type of product. Same method of production is used in singing bowls as well. Singing bowl is a type of bell which rather than hanging inverted or attached to a handle, sits with the bottom surface resting, and the rim vibrates to produce sound. Singing bowls are also known as rim gongs which are widely used for relaxation, melody, meditation and decorative purposes. Metal cra! has garnished the reputation of Nepal in the international market.


PRABIN SHAKYAPrabin Shakya is a metal craft producer of Manushi. He produces singing bowl. Singing bowls are the flat bells of Tibetan origin. Some of the difficulties he has been facing – are the scarcity of raw materials and the fluctuation of prices, which has made it challenging to quote the prices of final products. The company and Manushi formed a link when Manushi officials contacted him. And the relationship flourished and the company immensely profited with increased orders. Mr. Shakya is delighted that Manushi has helped to maintain labor respect and supported to increase the economic condition of the workers. He is proud to work with Manushi, which is a fair trade organization working to promote/maintain fair trade principles. With introduction of more modern technologies and inherited skills, metal craft business can prosper in coming days.

MAHESH SHRESTHA (KAYASTHA)Mahesh Shrestha (Kayastha) has an interesting story of how he started as a pashmina producer. Mahesh Shrestha had no intention of starting this business as his family had chosen the profession of repairing cars. The combination of his mechanical knowledge and the influence of his friends’ who were in the pashmina business led to the establishment of pashmina production. Some of the difficulties that the company currently faces are the lack of skilled manpower, in this field and the lack of proper market during the off seasons. Manushi and Mahesh Shrestha relationship started when his friend introduces him with members of Manushi and his friend also suggested the benefits of a relationship with Manushi. From that time onwards the relationship between these Manushi and Mr.Shrestha has flourished. Mr. Shrestha shares how delighted he is working with Manushi as it has helped him to get orders even during the off seasons. He is also grateful for how Manushi has inducted its producers in Fair Trade Group Nepal, and declared ten fair trade principles which have helped preserve labor satisfaction and encouraged a prudent way of doing business. Furthermore, Mr. Shrestha feels that the trainings and skill development workshops that Manushi provides to its producer companies which have also helped in his enterprise development.

FeltMostly popular in the European countries; for the embellishing objects it creates- ‘Felt’ is gaining its popularity here in Nepal too. Felt is a fabric made from wool that is matted, condensed, pressed and dyed to bright and beautiful colors. It is adored for its so! and fuzzy texture that does not wear out easily and is even eco-friendly.

Felt can be mold and sewed to di"erent items. Various products can be made through felt such as small coin purse, large tote bag, mu#er, hat, shoes for children and for adult, ball-carpet, wall hanging decorative etc. $ese items are all made up of simple material but because they are hand-cra!ed it adds aesthetic value to these.

Handicra! items play a crucial role in representing the culture and tradition of any country. Although the Felt handicra! was not pioneered in Nepal and despite the challenge of having to import the wool- it has been adopted as one of its own since more than a decade. Now, it is also gaining popularity amongst the youngsters because of its colorfulness and its uniqueness.


FRIEND HANDICRAFT: SHANTI SHRESTHA AND NIRJALA SHRESTHAFriend Handicraft, which produces felt products for Manushi, was established in 2002 by Shanti Shrestha and Nirjala Shrestha with the initiation of Manushi. Shanti Shrestha is a board member of Manushi. They said that, since childhood, they were interested in handicraft products, and thought of making a contribution in the handicraft sector in Nepal. Since last fourteen years Friend Handcraft has been involved into felt production but at the initial phase, felt was not their major production. They started hemp and allo production with a capital of NRs. 6000 in a tiny room at Ason Chowk in, Kathmandu. After a few months of establishment of the organization, they changed the product line to felt.

Friend Handicraft is an associated organization of Manushi which produces felt samples as well as products for Manushi according to the demand of the market. The felt products are very interesting, artistic and appealing. Manushi and its customer i.e international market are very impressed with Friend Handicraft’s quality. More than 125 grass-root women are involved in the production. They have earned their livelihood from felt work. As a social enterprise, Friend Handicraft is supporting and encouraging uneducated women, empowering them socially and economically.

Paper CraftIndigenous to Nepal, Lokta paper is a handmade paper which is made from the !brous inner bark of high elevation shrubs botanically known as Daphne Bhoula or Daphne Papyracea. First used in the 12th century in Nepal to jot down epic tales and religious texts and mantras, it is still widely used today for legal documents, o"cial government records, writer’s note book, lamps and wallpaper for decoration.

Lokta paper is an eco-friendly paper as it is made out of a renewable resource of handmade from Lokta bush and shrubs. For centuries, it has generated employment to both rural and urban villages and serves as a primary income source for many. Lokta bush regenerates naturally with suitable conditions and usually takes 4-6 years of time to grow completely. #erefore, there is no unfavorable e$ect on the forest environment and ecology.

Lokta paper is sturdy and durable so it can be preserved for a long period of time. #ey are germ-free, non-toxic and anti-water absorbent. #ese days, they are increasing in popularity due to their use in book binding, origami, restaurant menus, prayer %ags, decoration box and packaging. Even though the manufacturing is done in the hills, the dyeing is done typically in the Kathmandu valley using dyes which are meet by the EU standards on fumes and toxicology.

Thanka$e earliest surviving thanka paintings from Nepal date to about the 14th century AD, but this is probably well a#er Buddhists and Hindus began to make illustrations of the deities and natural scenes. A $anka is a painting, usually painted on cotton canvas, rarely on silk. $e paint can also constitute of minerals such as gold, lapis-lazuly, mercury-oxide etc. Tibetan or Buddhist painting, thanka depicting various motifs and elements of both Hinduism and Buddhism. $anka are used as wall decorator but for Tibetan and Buddhists it is an object of religious importance. $anka comes in huge variety of styles and represents Buddha’s and Hindu deities such as Life of Buddha, Wheel of life, Tara, Mandala and so on.

$anka also known as scroll-painting shows a Buddhist thought, famous scene, or a mandala. $e thanka is very di"erent than regular oil or acrylic painting. $e composition of a thanka, as with the popular Buddhist art, is highly logical. $anka o#en over%ow with imagination and reference. Because the art is clearly religious, all symbols and references must be in accordance with strict guidelines laid out in buddhist scripture. $e artist must be properly trained and have su&cient religious understanding, knowledge, and background to create precise and correct $anka. Generally, thankas last for a very long tenure, if taken care properly. It is delicate and hence, should be stored in dry places.

NIRMALA TAMANG AND NIPUN TAMANGAround eight years ago in Sildhunga, Sindupalchowk, Nirmala Tamang was completely blank about how to earn money and raise family. Since her husband, Nipun Tamang is skilled in making thanka, they wanted to make and sell thanka but had no money to buy raw materials for creating thanka. At the same time, with the grace of god, branch office of Manushi’s microcredit program was established in Sildhunga, Sindupalchowk and members of Micro-credit explained the local women about financing loan without any collateral, therefore they decided to borrow Rs. 10,000 loan to inaugurate thanka production. Consequently, borrowed Rs. 25000 from Micro-credit after few months to enhance their thanka business. For seven years, they have been making thanka at Sildhunga, Sindupalchowk and selling it in Kathmandu. Nipun Tamang says that there is no foreign market of Thanka at Sildhunga so, he used to travel from Sildhunga to Kathmandu which used to take around four to five hours on bus. On one hand, they have been facing problem of transportation and on other hand, earthquake on April 25,2015 devastated their home and roads of Sindupalchowk, which made it harder for them to transport thanka to Kathmandu. Their homes, land and working place were all gone so, they decided to rent a home at Kathmandu itself which would solve their transportation problem. They recently borrowed Rs. 50,000 loan from Micro-credit to rebuild their home at Sindhupalchowk. Moreover, Manushi is helping them by exploring their thanka in international market which is great relief for them.

Terms and Conditions1. Placing Order: Order can be placed via email or as appropriate considered by the buyer.

2. Pricing: All prices are FOB Kathmandu, Nepal. Prices are subject to change without prior notice but once the order is con!rmed price will not change until delivery. Prices other than FOB can also be quoted upon request.

3. Order Con!rmation: Once the products are identi!ed, prices and delivery dates are con!rmed, a preformed invoice will be sent as con!rmation of the order.

4. Payment: 50% advance payment is required once the order is con!rmed and the rest to be paid out before delivery. As per the regulation of the government of Nepal, 100% advance payment should be deposited in local bank account. Only when the advance has been con!rmed by the bank, shipments get the custom clearance. Bank details will be given in the proforma invoice.

5. Delivery: Lead time of 2-3 months or as agreed upon, for the dispatch of goods. If it is able to anticipate delay in the delivery date, will immediately inform the buyer in writing of the reasons and inform the new delivery date.

6. Packing: Wooden or carton boxes will be used. Individual packing of most of the items will also be done. Instructions on the packing, if any, will be followed as per the requirement of buyer.

7. Minimum Order Quantity: It depends upon the products/raw materials/colors of the ordered products. $e minimum order value is 1000 US Dollars or equivalent amount in Euro.

8. Products and Design: Provided products and designs are not exclusive to one customer. Customers should state in the order if their design is exclusive.

9. Freight: We do air shipment, courier and sea shipment according to the demand of the buyer. Buyers are responsible for the cost of transportation.
