Millennium Machine & Tool (MMT), Inc., Newton, Kansas, has recently installed a CITIZEN Cincom A32 sliding headstock CNC lathe.

The company, which is a full-service machine shop, started in 1998 in an 1800-sq.-ft. building.

Today, the company operates with 36 employees working two shifts in a 38,000-sq.-ft. facility in Newton (just north of Wichita).

MMT works with most metals and plastics and can handle ev-erything from prototypes to large runs.

“We work hard to deliver quality work, on time and at a good price,” commented Nick Messer, director of sales and mar-keting. “We are very flexible and can implement changes quickly.”

The Citizen, purchased from McClain Tool & Technology, was needed to increase the company’s capacity and to reduce machin-ing time. It features 28 tools (with up to 13 live), 32-mm diameter capacity, 8,000-rpm dual spindles and a magazine barloader.

This brings MMT’s CNC machine tool count up to 33. These include 6 CNC lathes, 23 CNC vertical mills, 4 horizontal machining centers and a mill-turn center. “We have been very satis-fied with our Citizen,” stated Kris Wondra, co-owner and founder. “McClain has done a great job and our machining time has been improved by 50%. We are very happy with our purchase.”

The Wichita Chapter of the Institute for Supply Man-agement (ISM) started out its year with a meeting at Snit-zler’s Saloon at Old Cowtown Museum on September 11th

Those attending learned about the 65 year history of the museum, a restored portion of old-time Wichita representing the time period of 1865 to 1880. Over 100 buildings have been moved/relocated to the “town” to provide a look at Wichita back almost 150 years. Vari-ous events and re-enactments are held at Old Cowtown throughout the year.

Ultra-Tech Inc., Kan-sas City, Kansas, has re-cently installed a new Mazak VTC800/30SR 5-axis milling center. In support of their grow-ing aerospace manufacturing, the additional 5-axis mill will add capacity, capability, and ef-ficiency.

The 31-year-old aerospace machining and manufactur-ing company offers: 3, 4 and 5-axis machining, up to 30” x 120”, turning with live tooling, assembly and testing. UT has established partners in special processing to support turnkey products – integrating non-de-structive examination, coatings, and welding.

Ultra-Tech, which is AS9100 certified and ITAR registered, works with all metals as well as plastics. The firm employs high speed spindles to efficiently machine high strength aluminum alloys while utilizing more robust machines for hard metals. Their diverse machine tools allow for a wide range of support in both the commercial and defense aerospace industry.

The new Mazak VTC800 was needed to expand Ultra-Tech’s abilities and efficien-cies. It brings additional 5-axis machining capability with a work envelope of 30” x 120”, a 30-tool magazine and an 18,000 rpm spindle. It was purchased from Concept Techni-cal Sales and is the 10th Mazak at the company. “We have been happy with the Mazaks and their technology,” noted Ultra-Tech’s Chris Coad. Coad further explained the use of Mazatrol which allows the machinist to program at the machine while

Schenck Process, Sabetha, Kansas, continues to leverage technology in its Lean journey to improve its operation. The firm designs and produces close tolerance dry-powder pneumatic conveying, weighing, feeding and dust collection systems for industries worldwide. With over 40 years of research and develop-ment Schenck Process has devel-oped some of the industry’s most advanced products and technolo-gies (which include hundreds of patents). The Sabetha facility is an integration of Mac Process under the Schenck Process Group. This 130,000-sq.-ft. facility’s 250 employees provide engineering, design, machining, fabrication, finishing and assembly.

The company is 5 years into its Lean Process and has been going through each operation and department and improving processes, upgrading equipment, leveraging technology and elimi-nating waste.

One of the most recent ex-amples is the overhauling of its liquid-paint operation. The area had been identified as a “bottle-neck” in the overall throughput of the plant as there was one paint booth and the paint had to “air dry” before moving/assembly. The local temperature and hu-midity variances could make this process very unpredictable.

As Dwight Edelman, execu-tive director of operations and 29-year company veteran, explained, “We worked with Bob Borman and the crew at Contrast Equip-ment to review our entire finish-ing process to see how we could improve it and eliminate waste.” The resulting configuration now includes a shot-blast booth (20’ x 20’ x 70’), two Kayco paint booths (a 22’ x 20’ x 70’ with

drive thru doors and down draft air flow & a 20’ x 18’ x 40’ with side draft air flow) with spray-cure systems that heat the booths to over 130 degrees for complete curing of the paint in a few hours. Also included is a Graco paint system that includes electronic proportioning equipment that automatically mixes the paint and catalyst which reduces waste and saves time. Graco paint guns finish out the system. The entire system is laid out to be adjacent to

the assembly/shipping area to op-timize the workflow of the plant.

“We have been very pleased with the results of Contrast’s paint operation overhaul,” noted Edel-man. Our throughput, turnaround and waste have all improved dramatically. They are great folks to work with.”

Peterson Transportation Inc. (PTI), Manson, Iowa, has recently hired long-time steel industry veteran Al Lammers as it Sales Manager.

The 17-year-old company offers flatbed, drop deck, oversize load, over-length load and LTL freight services to the lower 48 states with a com-bination of its own fleet and owner-operator rigs. During a discussion with friends about favorite childhood books, Horatio Alger, Jr. was men-tioned. Alger, a 19th century author wrote about impoverished boys and their rise from humble back-grounds to middle class security through hard work, determination, courage and honesty.

This emphasis on character reminded us of The 7 Habbits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. Covey, who died in 2012, had read hundreds of books and articles on popular psychology and self-improvement that had been published in the U.S. since 1776.

He was startled to find most of the writings in the first 150 years considered character to be the most important trait.

“The literature of what we might call ‘The Character Ethic’ helped Americans cultivate integ-rity, humility, fidelity, temperance, courage, justice, patience, industry and the Golden Rule.

“Compared with the early suc-cess literature, the writings of the last 50 years seem superficial to me - filled with social conscious-ness, techniques, and quick fixes.

“These solutions derive not from the Character Ethic, but the Personality Ethic: Success is a function of public image, of atti-tudes and behaviors, of skills that lubricate the process of human interaction. I don’t say these skills are unimportant. But they are secondary.”

Covey believed there must be “deep integrity and fundamental goodness” guiding you. He quotes Emerson who said, “What you are shouts so loudly in my ears, I can-

lin’s autobiography offered an excellent example of how a person might develop the Character Ethic through one’s daily habits.

If you aren’t familiar with Franklin’s daily schedules, here is a typical one: From 5 a.m. - 7 a.m. - Rise, wash and read Powerful Goodness; contrive day’s business and take the resolution of the day; prosecute the present study; and eat breakfast.

The morning question, “What good shall I do this day?” 8 a.m. - 12 noon; Work. 12 noon - 1 p.m. - Read or overlook my accounts and dine. 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.; Work. 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.; Put things in their place, supper, music or diversion or conversation; examination of the day.

Evening question, “What good have I done today?” 10 p.m. - 5 a.m. Sleep.

We aren’t sure how we fit this routine into today’s fast pace, but perhaps just asking what good you plan to do each day would be a start.

On a topic related to Charac-ter Ethics, Imprimis, a publica-tion of Hillsdale College, printed an excerpt from Falling in Love With America Again, written by Jim DeMint, president of the Heritage Foundation. His com-ments on “The Problem of Big” are reprinted here with Imprimis’ permission.

“One of the problems of Big (Big is an organization that has reached such a size that its con-tinued existence and success is no longer contingent upon its quality of service; this dubious distinction finds its highest manifestation in our bloated government) is that

it creates a third option: neither obeying the rules nor breaking the rules, but changing the rules as you go. That’s what happens in cronyism, which is in effect legal cheating.

“That is one of the most frus-trating aspects of the crisis of Big: Most of the time there is no crime to prosecute. The institutions change the rules, so what would have been cheating, and what many people see as cheating, is actually blessed by the state. The transactions of crony capitalism– campaign contributions on the one side, policy changes on the other– are all perfectly legal.

“This is why so much of the criticism of special interests as such is incomplete, or even misdi-rected. Attacking special interests for accepting government favors is like criticizing a four-year-old for eating ice cream for breakfast.

The proper targets for criticism are not the beneficiaries of the bad policy, but those in charge who acquiesce to their requests–the government agencies that provide favors; the parents who allow their kids to eat whatever they want.

“When government officials change policies to benefit special interests, the responsibility for the ‘cheating’ lies with the officials, not the special interests. They, after all, are only playing by the rules the government sets. As long as politicians effectively put the rules of the game up for sale, it’s hard to fault people for trying to buy or rent them.”

“...Despite all the promises you hear from politicians, big government does not really help the little guy...Big government and its big partners rob individuals and our nation of freedom, op-portunity, and prosperity,” DeMint concludes.

We remember in the 1960’s when “old fashioned ethics “ were being replaced with “situ-ation ethics,” which let each individual decide what was right. The only real concern then was, “Is it legal?”

Obviously that was a mistake. Check your representative’s vot-ing record and let them know how you feel before you vote this fall.

IMEC (Industrial Machine and Engineering Company), Monett, Missouri, continues to improve its operations with new equipment and process enhancements.

Founded in 1982 by Dan and Charlotte Conner, the firm is a full-service custom manufacturer that focuses on precision sheet metal fabrication, machined parts, assemblies and special machinery.

Today the firm operates in a 45,000-sq.-ft. facility with 50 employees (many with more than 10 years of experience) and a wide range of CNC equipment. A second shift was recently started to keep up with customer demand.

Equipment at the 32-year-old firm includes: CNC laser cutting systems; CNC punches and shears; multi-axis CNC machining/turning centers; a complete QC lab; a powder coating line; welding stations (spot, TIG & MIG); and assorted manual equipment.

IMEC serves OEMs in various industries including: military/defense; energy; industrial equipment; electronics; transportation; and aerospace.

A recent example of IMEC’s on-going improvement is the installation of a nitrogen generating system that produces nitrogen at 99.99% purity. Nitrogen is used by the firm’s laser cutting systems.

The system was designed by Holtec Gas of Chesterfield, Missouri. It appears this is only the second such system installed in a custom shop in Missouri. “This system is another example of how we continually strive to make our operation more efficient and competitive,” commented Eric Merriman, plant manager. “We maintain a very flexible and

lean manufacturing process.” Mark Conner, son of the

Conner’s and sales and marketing manager, noted that IMEC was recognized as Monett’s 2014 Small Business of the Year and has completed its ISO 9001-2008 recertification. The company has been certified to the ISO standard since 1999.

ISM-Kansas City, an affiliate of the Institute for Supply Man-agement, held a dinner meeting on August 19th at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Overland Park, Kansas. The featured speaker was Jim Marinakis, CPSM, C.P.M., MBA, a 36-year supply chain veteran(with six different companies) and a Six-Sigma black belt.

He discussed Activities Based Costing (ABC) and how it can be used as a benchmark to measure how purchasing professionals are spending their time and to track the results of ERP systems and supply chain enhancements.

He covered internal and ex-ternal benchmarking, collecting/ preparing data and how to perform analysis.

Marinakis provided examples from his career regarding ABC and how it helped him improve the supply chain process during system changes and even mergers.

In other chapter business, the J.R. Samuel award was presented to Esmeralda Phillips for her contributions to the chapter. The award is named for Samuels, the
