These are:s buckle pretensioners,

s lap strap pretensioners,

s chest force limiters,

s driver and passenger frontairbags.

These systems are designed to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact.

Depending on the force of theimpact the system may activate:- seat belt locking,- the buckle pretensioner (which is

triggered to take up the seat beltplay),- the lap belt pretensioner to keep

the occupant in their seat, the lowvolume front airbag and the forcelimiters,

- the large volume front airbag.

PretensionersWith the ignition switched on, if there is a severe frontal impact anddepending on the force of theimpact, the system may engage:- piston 1 which immediately

retracts the seat belt,- piston 2 on the front seats.

The pretensioners hold the seat beltagainst the body, holding the

occupant more securely against theseat, thus increasing the seat belt'sefficiency.

• After an accident, havethe entire restraintsystem checked

• No operation whatsoever ispermitted on any part of thesystem (pretensioners, airbags, computers, wiring) and thesystem components must not bereused on any other vehicle, even if identical.

• To avoid premature triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULTNetwork personnel may work onthe pretensioner and airbag

system.

• Testing of the electric triggersystem may only be carried out by a specially trained technicianusing special equipment.

• When the vehicle is scrapped, contact your RENAULT Dealerfor disposal of the pretensioner

OperationThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.

In a severe frontal impact, theairbags inflate rapidly, cushioningthe impact of the driver's head andchest against the steering wheel andthe front passenger's head againstthe dashboard. The airbags thendeflate immediately so that the

passengers are not in any wayhindered from leaving the vehicle.

Special feature of the frontairbagThe front airbag has two inflationvolumes and includes an internalventilation system to prevent burnswhich could be caused by escapinggases:- “small volume” airbag, this is the

first stage of operation,- “large volume” airbag, the airbag

seams rip so that a larger volumeof gas is released into the bag (forthe most severe impacts).

Deployment of the airbag ismodified according to the severityof the impact and the position of thedriver's seat on its runners.

Operating faultsWarning light 1 lights up on theinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then goes out aftera few seconds.

If it does not light up when theignition is switched on, or comes onwhen the engine is running, there isa fault in the system.

Consult your RENAULT Dealer as

soon as possible. Your protectionwill be reduced until this fault isrectified.

the risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the airbag inflates.

Warnings concerning the driver’s airbag• Do not modify the steering wheel or the cushion.

• Do not cover the steering wheel cushion.

• Do not attach any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to the steering wheel cushion.• The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnel from the RENAULT network).

• When driving, do not sit too close to the steering wheel. Sit with your arms slightly bent (see information on“Adjusting your driving position” in Section 1). This will allow sufficient space for the airbag to deploy correctly and be fully effective.

Warnings concerning the passenger airbag

• Do not attach or glue any objects (pins, badges, clock, telephone mounting, etc.) to the dashboard in the proximity of

the airbag housing.• Nothing should be placed between the dashboard and the passenger (pet, umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).

• The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as there is a risk that serious injuries may besustained. As a general rule, keep all parts of the body (knees, hands, head, etc.) well away from the dashboard.

• The passenger airbags should be reactivated as soon as the child seat is removed, to ensure the protection of the frontpassenger in the event of an impact.

A REAR-FACING CHILD/BABY SEAT MUST NOT BE FITTED TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT UNLESS THE

ADDITIONAL RESTRAINT SYSTEMS, I.E. THE PASSENGER AIRBAG, ARE DEACTIVATED. (Refer to theinformation on Passenger Airbag Deactivation in Section 1).

These systems are designed to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact.

There are two possibilities, depending on the force of theimpact:- protection is provided by the belt

Rear seat belt pretensionersThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.

If the vehicle is subjected to a severefrontal impact, a device retracts theseat belt, pulling the seat belt tightagainst the body and thusimproving its effectiveness.

risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the airbag inflates.

The airbag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. The airbags and seat belts are integral parts of the same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear the seat belt at all times. If seat belts are not worn, theoccupants of the vehicle are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. The risk of minor

superficial injuries occurring when the airbag is deployed may also increase, although such minor injuries arealways possible with airbags.

If the vehicle should overturn or in the event of a rear impact, however severe, the pretensioners and airbags are notalways triggered. These systems may, however, be triggered by shocks to the vehicle underbody, e.g. from pavements, potholes, stones, etc.

• No operations or modifications whatsoever are permitted on any part of the airbag system (electronic unit, wiring, etc.) (such work must be carried out by qualified Renault Network personnel).

• To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid accidental triggering of the system which may cause

injury, only qualified RENAULT Network personnel may work on the airbag system.

• As a safety precaution, have the airbag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, is stolen or broken into.

• When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the vehicle.

• When scrapping your vehicle, contact your RENAULT Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

any electrical consumers you donot really need.

However, (with safety always inmind), keep your lights on whenthe visibility is bad (“see and beseen”).

• Try to use the air vents. Drivingwith the windows open at 60 mph(100 km/h) will increase fuel

• It is better to fit a trailer for bulkyobjects.

• When towing a caravan, fit a winddeflector and adjust it carefully.

• Avoid using the vehicle fordoor-to-door calls (short journeyswith long waits in between) because the engine never reachesits normal operating temperature.Try to group your journeys.

TYRES

Tyre and wheel safety

The tyres are the only contact between the vehicle and the road, soit is essential to keep them in goodcondition.

You must make sure that your tyrescomply with local road regulations.

Maintaining the tyresThe tyres must be in good conditionand the tread form must have

When the tyre tread has beeneroded to the level of the warningstrips, they become visible 2: it isthen necessary to replace your tyres because the read rubber is no longer,1.6 mm deep and this causes poorroad holding on wet roads.

An overloaded vehicle, longjourneys by motorway, particularlyin very hot weather, or continualdriving on poorly surfaced minorroads will lead to more rapid tyrewear and affect safety.

 WWW.MANUALS.WSTYRES (continued)

Tyre pressures

Recommended tyre pressures must be adhered to. (Remember to checkthe emergency spare wheel at thesame time.) Pressures must bechecked at least once a month andalways before a long journey. (Referto the section on Tyre pressures.)

Incorrect tyre pressureslead to abnormal tyrewear and unusually hotrunning, factors which

Pressures should be checked whenthe tyres are cold; ignore higherpressures which may be reached inwarm weather or following a fastjourney. If tyre pressures cannot be checkedwhen the tyres are cold, the normalpressures must be increased by 0.2to 0.3 bar (or 3 psi.).

Never deflate a hot tyre.

Note: a label (depending on countryor model) fixed to the edge or frameof the driver's door gives therecommended tyre pressures.

Fitting new tyres

For safety reasons, thisoperation must be carriedout by a specialist.

Fitting different tyresmay change your vehicle asfollows:- It may mean that your vehicle

no longer conforms to current

regulations.- It may change the way it

handles when cornering.- It may cause the steering to be

heavy.- It may cause tyre noise.- It may affect the use of snow

(Towing a caravan, boat, etc.)- It is important to comply with the towing weights, governed by local legislation in each country and, in particular, laid

down in the road traffic regulations. Contact your RENAULT Dealer about any towing equipment. Under no

circumstances may the gross train weight (= maximum permissible all-up weight and weight towed) be exceeded.- If your vehicle is already at full load (max. permissible all-up weight), the maximum speed must be limited to 60 mph

(100 km/h) and the tyre pressures increased by 0.2 bar (3 psi.).

- The engine output and climbing capability are reduced with altitude. We recommend that the maximum load be reduced by 10% at an altitude of 1000 metres and by an additional 10% for each 1000 metres thereafter.
