    1 Important

    Take time to read this user manualbefore you use your phone. It containsimportant information and notesregarding your phone.

    1.1 Power requirements

    This product requires an electrical

    supply of 100-240 volts AC. In case ofpower failure, communication can belost.

    The Electrical network is classified ashazardous. The only way to powerdown the charger is to unplug thepower supply from the electricaloutlet. Ensure that the electricaloutlet is always easily accessible.

    The voltage on the network isclassified as TNV-3(Telecommunication NetworkVoltages), as defined in the standardEN 60-950.

    To avoid damage or malfunction: Do not allow the charging contacts or

    the battery to come into contact withmetal objects.

    Never use any other battery than theone delivered with the product orrecommended by Philips: risk ofexplosion.

    Always use the cables provided withthe product.

    Handsfree activation could suddenlyincrease the volume in the earpiece to

    a very high level: make sure thehandset is not too close to your ear.

    This equipment is not designed tomake emergency calls when the

    power fails. An alternative has to bemade available to allow emergencycalls.

    Do not expose the phone toexcessive heat caused by heatingequipment or direct sunlight.

    Do not drop your phone or allowobjects to fall on your phone.

    Do not use any cleaning agentscontaining alcohol, ammonia, benzene,or abrasives as these may harm theset.

    Do not use the product in placeswhere there are explosive hazards.

    Do not let small metal objects comeinto contact with the product. Thiscan deteriorate audio quality anddamage the product.

    Active mobile phones in the vicinitymay cause interference.

    Do not open your product as youcould be exposed to high voltages.

    Do not allow the charger to comeinto contact with liquids.

    1.3 Using GAP standard

    compliance

    The GAP standard guarantees that all

    DECT GAP handsets and base stationscomply with a minimum operating

    standard irrespective of their make. Yourhandset and base station are GAPcompliant, which means the minimumguaranteed functions are: register a

    handset, take the line, receive a call anddial. The advanced features may not beavailable if you use a handset other thanthe handset of one of the modeldescribed in this manual with your basestation.To register and use your phones handsetwith a GAP standard base station of a

    different make, first follow the proceduredescribed in the manufacturersinstructions, then follow the proceduredescribed on page 29. To register ahandset of another make to your phonesbase station, place the base station intoregistration mode (page 29), then followthe procedure in the manufacturersinstructions.

    3 Getting started

    3.1 Connect the base station1 Place the base station in a central

    location near the telephone linesocket and electricity socket.

    2 Connect the line cord and thepower cable to their correspondingconnectors at the back of the basestation.

    3 Connect the other end of the linecord and power cable to theirrespective sockets.

    The line adaptor may not be attached tothe line cord. In this case, you have toconnect the line adaptor to the line cord

    first before plugging the line cord to theline socket.

    Avoid placing the base station too closeto large metal objects such as filingcabinets, radiators or electricalappliances. This can impair the range andsound quality. Buildings with thick

    internal and external walls may impairtransmission of signals to and from thebase.

    Power is applied when the poweradaptor is plugged into the unit andconnected to the electricity socket. Theonly way to power down the unit is tounplug the power adaptor from theelectricity socket. Therefore, ensure thatthe electricity socket is easily accessible.The power adaptor and telephone linecord have to be connected correctly, asincorrect connection could damage theunit. Always use the telephone line cordsupplied with the unit. Otherwise, youmay not get a dial tone.

    3.2 Install your phone

    Before using the handset, the batterieshave to be installed and fully charged.

    When the batteries are inserted for thefirst time, the unit will not be able to

    start normally due to the low battery.You must charge the batteries on the

    base station before you can use thehandset.

    3.2.1 Install battery

    Always use AAA rechargeable batteriessupplied with your unit. If alkalinebatteries are used instead ofrechargeable batteries, WARNINGBATT will show on the display and thebattery icon will blink quickly.

    1 Slide out the battery cover.

    2 Place the batteries in the correctpolarity as indicated and replace thecover.

    3.2.2 Charge battery

    The handset must be charged for at least24 hours before using it for the first time.

    When the battery level becomes low, thelow battery sensor alerts you by

    sounding an audible tone and blinking thebattery icon. If the battery level becomesexceedingly low, the phone automaticallyswitches off shortly after the alert and

    any function in progress will not besaved.1 Place the handset on the charging

    cradle of the base station. A beep isemitted if the handset is placedcorrectly.

    2 The battery icon on thedisplay blinks during charge.

    3 The battery icon becomessteady when the handset is fullycharged.

    Optimal battery life is reached after 3cycles of complete charging (over 15hours) and discharging, allowingapproximately 12 hours of talk-time and150 hours of stand-by time.The indoor and outdoor range of thephone is up to 50 metres and 300 metresrespectively. When the handset movesbeyond the operation range, the antennaicon will blink.

    When you reach the range limit theconversation may become crackly. Move

    closer to the base.

    3.3 Welcome mode

    Before you first use your handset, youneed to configure it according to thecountry of use. After charging it for a fewminutes, the wordWELCOMEappears

    in various languages. Follow these stepsto configure your phone:

    Depending on your country, theWELCOMEscreen may not appear. Inthis case, you are not required to select

    your country/operator/language settings.You can still make outgoing calls orreceive incoming calls without firstdefining your country selection.1 Press oto display a list of

    countries.2 Scroll nup and down to find your

    country.

    3 Press oto confirm yourselection.(WAITINGwill be displayed whilethe default line settings and menulanguage for the selected countryare automatically configured.)

    4 The product now goes to theDATE/TIMEselection menu. Enterthe current date (DD/MM) andpress oto confirm.

    5 Enter the time (HH-MM) and pressoto confirm.(The time format, 12 hour or 24hour, depends on the countryselected. If the 12-hour format hasbeen selected, use nto scrollbetween AM and PM.)

    A validation tone is emitted.Your phone goes directly to idlemode and is now ready for use.In case of you have severalhandsets, the setting isautomatically done for allhandsets.

    You may change your country settings(see page 30) and time format (see

    page 26) anytime after the firstconfiguration.

    3.4 Using multipacksIf you have purchased a multipack youwill have additional handsets, chargers,power adaptors and AAA rechargeablebatteries.1 Plug the chargers into a power

    socket.2 Install the batteries supplied into the

    handsets.3 Place the handsets on the chargers

    to charge the batteries.

    4.1 Make a call

    4.1.1 Predialling

    1 Dial the number (maximum 24digits).

    2 Press t. The call is initiated.

    You may insert a prefix number to thebeginning of your predial number, seeSet Prefix on page 31 for moreinformation.

    Memory

    In idle mode, long press 1or 2todial a stored direct access memory

    number.

    See section 5.5.6 for instructions on howto store, edit, and delete direct accessmemory numbers.

    4.1.8 Enter a Dialing Pause

    Make a long press #after entering oneor more digits to enter a pause in thedialling sequence.

    4.2 Answer a call

    When the handset rings during anincoming call, please do not hold thehandset too close to your ear as thevolume of the ringing tone may damageyour hearing.When the phone rings, press t. The call is established.

    Incoming call has priority over otherevents. Whenever there is an incoming

    call, other status in progress such asphone setting, menu navigation, etc willbe aborted.

    4.2.1 Handsfree answering

    Handsfree activation can suddenly

    increase the volume in the earpiece to a

    very high level. Make sure the handset isnot too close to your ear.When the phone rings, press l. The handset loudspeaker is activated.

    4.2.2 Call waiting

    If you have subscribed to Call Waitingservices, the earpiece will emit a beeptone to inform you that there is a secondincoming call. The number or name ofthe second caller will also be displayed if

    you have subscribed to Caller LineIdentification service (CLI). Pleasecontact your network provider for moreinformation on this service.To answer the second call, press tandthen 2to answer the call. The first call is put on hold, and you

    are now connected to the second call.OR

    Press tand then 1to end thecurrent call and answer the second call.

    4.3 End a call

    To end a conversation, press h. The call ends.

    When auto hang-up is on, you can simplyplace the handset back to its base stationor charger to end the call. This feature isactivated by default.

    The call duration (MM-SS) will bedisplayed on the handset screen forabout 5 seconds.

    5.1 Switch the handset on/off

    Press hfor at least one second toswitch the handset on. To switch it off,press and hold hin idle mode for atleast 5 seconds.

    5.2 Keypad lock/unlock

    Press and hold *for 3 seconds to lock/unlock the keypad in idle mode.

    5.3 Text or number entry

    When you select a field in which you canenter text, you can enter the letters thatare printed on the keys by pressing therelevant key once or several times. Forexample, to enter the name PAUL:1 Press 7once: P2 Press 2once: PA3 Press 8twice: PAU4 Press 5three times: PAULThe table below gives you the character

    5.5 Using your Phonebook

    Your phone can store up to 100phonebook memories. Each phonebookentry can have a maximum of 24 digitsfor the phone number and 12 charactersfor the name.

    If you have multiple handsets, thephonebook can only be accessed by onehandset at a time.

    5.5.1 Store a contact in the

    phonebook

    INFO 1. When present, these entriesare pre-assigned to direct accessmemory as key 1(for VOICEMAIL)and/or key 2(for INFO 1). If yousubscribe to these services, this allowsyou to dial your voice mail accessnumber and/or information serviceaccess number using key 1and/or key

    The call log stores the last 20 externalcalls and any new voice mail received.When browsing the call list, the iconwill flash for new and unanswered callsand will stay steady for answered calls. Ifyou have subscribed to Caller LineIdentification (CLI), and provided theidentity of the caller is not withheld, the

    name (or number) of the caller will bedisplayed.

    If the identity of the caller is withheld orthe network does not provide the dateand time information, then theinformation will not be displayed in thecall log. If you have not subscribed to

    Caller Line Identification service, there

    will not be any information displayed inthe call log.

    5.7.1 Access the Call log1 Press uin idle mode and scroll n

    to browse the call log. The calls (missed and received)

    are displayed in chronologicalorder with the most recent callat the top of the list.

    2 To view the details, press o.

    It allows you to make free internal calls,transfer external calls from one handset

    to another and use the conferenceoption.

    5.8.1 Intercom another handset

    If the handset does not belong toCD250/255 or SE250/255 range, thisfunction may not be available.1 Press iin idle mode.

    If you have two handsets, theother handset is paged

    automatically. INT 2345 * is displayed,representing the handsetnumbers available for intercom(* represents all handsets).

    2 If there are more than 2 registeredhandsets, enter the handset number(key 1- 5). To call all handsetsat once, press *.

    3 Press ton the called handset. The intercom is established.

    5.8.2 Transfer an external call to

    another handset

    1 During the call, press ito putthe external call on hold (the caller

    can no longer hear you).2 Enter the handset number (key1

    - 5) you wish to transfer yourexternal call to.

    3 Press ton the called handset toanswer the internal call, where bothinternal callers can talk. Intercom is established.

    5.8.3 Answer an external call

    during intercom

    1 During intercom, a new call tone isemitted when there is an incomingexternal call.

    2 Press tto answer the externalcall and end the intercom. The call is established.

    5.8.4 Switch between an internal

    and external call

    During the call, pressito switchbetween an internal or external call.

    5.8.5 Establish a three-party

    conference call

    The conference call feature allows one

    external call to be shared with twohandsets (in intercom). The three partiescan share the conversation and nonetwork subscription is required.1 During the call, press ito put

    the external call on hold (the callercan no longer hear you).

    2 Enter the handset number (key 1

    - 5) you wish to establish theconference call with.

    3 Press ton the called handset toanswer the internal call, where bothinternal callers can talk. Intercom is established.

    4 Press and hold ifor 2 secondson the first handset to start thethree-party conference. CONFERENCEwill be

    displayed on the screen once theconference call is established.

    5.9 PagingThe paging feature enables you to locatea missing handset if the handset is inrange and contains charged batteries.1 Press aon the base station.

    All the registered handsets startto ring.

    2 Once retrieved, press any key onthe handset to end the paging.

    If there are no key presses within 30seconds, the handset and base stationwill automatically return to idle mode.

    Press aon the base station again tostop paging.

    5.10 Chain Dialing

    This feature allows you to dial anextension to a number already saved inthe phonebook during a call.1 Press tto take the line and press

    oto open phonebook list. The phonebook entries are listed

    in alphabetical order.

    If your phone is connected to an ISDNline through an adaptor, the date & timemay be updated after each call. Theavailability of date & time update is

    7.4 Select Country

    The availability of this menu is dependenton your country.You can select another country differentfrom the one chosen duringWELCOMEmode.

    Once the country is selected, the default

    7.5 Reset Unit

    You can reset your phone to its defaultsettings with this feature.

    Upon reset, all your personal settings,call log and redial list entries will bedeleted and the phone will return to itsdefault settings. However, yourphonebook as well as the unreadmessages of your answering machine willremain unchanged after reset.

    You may have to configure your phoneonce again. In this case theWELCOMEmode will appear again after reset. (Goto chapter 3.3)1 Pressmin idle mode, scrollnto

    digits for the detect string and 10 digitsfor the auto prefix number.

    7.7 Change Recall time

    Recall time (or dial delay) is the timedelay by which the line will bedisconnected after you press tkey. Itcan be set to short or long.The default value of recall time that ispreset in your handset should be the bestsuited for your country network andtherefore you should not need to change

    Your phone features an answeringmachine that records unanswered callswhen it is activated. The answeringmachine can store up to 59 messages.

    The maximum recording time is 3minutes per message, or 15 minutes for

    all messages. The maximum length of anoutgoing message is 1 minute. You canuse the control keys on the base stationto perform the basic functions of the

    answering machine such as paging,message playback, deleting messages andadjustment of volume on the basestation. For a description of eachfunction of the control keys on the basestation, please see Overview of the basestation(Section 2.4) for more details.You can also use the answering machine

    menu on the handset to access theanswering machine functions. Thoseprocedures are covered below. There isalso a menu to set the answeringmachine options.The telephone answering machine is ONby default. To switch the answeringmachine between on and off, press eon your base station. Alternatively, youmay switch the answering machine onand off via your handset (See section 8.3below.)

    8.1 Playing Messages

    8.1.1 Playback of messages via

    handset

    The icon blinks when there are newmessages. The first recorded message isplayed first via the loudspeaker. When allnew messages have been played, theanswering machine will stop and the icon

    Outgoing Message

    You can record a personalized messageto be played when the answering

    machine picks up an incoming call.

    The maximum length of an outgoingmessage is 1 minute.1 Pressmin idle mode, scrollnto

    8.5 Set the answer mode

    There are 2 answer modes available:Answer Only and Answer & Record. Bydefault, the answer mode is Answer &

    Record, which lets your caller leave amessage on the answering machine. Thiscan be changed to Answer Only mode,which does not allow your caller to leaveany messages on the answering machine.1 Press min idle mode, scroll nto

    Depending on the answer mode you haveselected, the appropriate defaultoutgoing message is played once theanswering machine picks up an incomingcall. The language of the default outgoingmessage depends on the country

    selected in Welcome mode.

    You can set the answering machine toplay a personalized outgoing message.See Play, Record, or Delete an OutgoingMessageabove.

    8.6 Answering Machine settings

    8.6.1 Ring Delay

    This is the number of rings before theanswering machine answers and startsplaying your greeting message. You canset the answering machine to startplaying your greeting message after 3 to 8rings or the ECONOMY option. Thedefault ring delay is 5.1 Pressmin idle mode, scrollnto

    ANSW MACHINEand presso.2 PLAYis displayed. Scroll nto

    SETTINGSand press o.3 RING DELAYis displayed. Press

    o, then scroll nto select from 3to 8or ECONOMY.

    4 Press oagain to confirm. A validation tone is emitted.

    If ECONOMYis selected, the ring delaydepends on the answering machinescondition. If there are new messages in the

    answering machine, it will pick up theline after 2 rings.

    If there are no new messages in the

    answering machine, it will pick up theline after 6 rings.

    Hence, if you want to check if youhave any messages without incurringcall charges, you can hang up the callafter the 3rd ring.

    8.6.2 Remote Access

    You can check the messages on youranswering machine by calling in from anoutside line and entering the remote

    access code*, you will be able to obtainthe messages on your answeringmachine. The keypad on the phone youuse to dial in acts like the functions onyour answering machine.

    This feature is deactivated by default.* The remote access code (which is the

    same as your PIN code) prevents anyunauthorised remote access of youranswering machine.

    8.6.2.2 Controlling the

    Answering Machine from

    an external call

    1 From your external phone, dial

    home. The answering machine answers

    and starts playing your greetingmessage.

    2 Press # key and enter the remoteaccess code (same as your PINcode). If the access code is incorrect, an

    error tone will be emitted. Thenenter the PIN code again. If thePIN code is still incorrect, theanswering machine will drop theline immediately.

    If the remote access code iscorrect, a short validation tonewill be heard.

    Operation is cancelled if the PIN code isnot entered within 7 seconds.If the answering machine is off, the phonewill enter into the remote access modeafter 10 rings. A beep will then sound,prompting you to enter the PIN code.Enter the PIN (default is 0000) toactivate the remote access feature. You

    can then turn ON the answering machineand play the recorded messages.

    The following table indicates how toaccess the functions of the answeringmachine using the telephone keypad.

    8.6.3 Handset Screening

    If Handset call screening is set to ON,you can hear the incoming messageduring recording via the handset speakerand decide whether or not to pick up acall. To take the call, press t.1 Press min idle mode, scroll nto

    10.1 Connection

    The handset does not switch on!

    Charge the batteries: Put the handseton the base station to charge. After afew moments, the phone will switchon.

    The handset does not charge!

    Check charger connections.

    Battery is full: There is no need tocharge the battery.

    Bad battery contact: Adjust the

    handset slightly. Dirty contact: Clean the batteries

    contact with a cloth moistened withalcohol.

    Communication is lost during a call!

    10.2 Set-up

    Caller does not hear me!

    Microphone may be muted: During a call,press s.

    Theres no dialling tone!

    No power: Check the connections. Batteries are empty: Charge the

    batteries. Move closer to the base station. Wrong line cord used: Use the line

    cord provided. Line adaptor may be required: If

    applicable, connect the line adaptor to

    the line cord.

    10.4 Product behaviour

    Keypad does not work!

    Unlock your keypad: Long press *in idle mode.

    The handset warms up when

    making a long call!

    This is a normal behavior. The handsetconsumes energy while calling.

    The handset cannot be registered

    to the base station!

    Maximum number of handsets (5) hasbeen reached. To register a newhandset, unregister an existinghandset.

    Remove and replace the handsetbatteries.

    Try again by disconnecting andconnecting the base station powersupply and follow the procedure toregister a handset (see Register onpage 29).

    Caller number is not displayed!

    Service is not activated: Check yoursubscription with your networkoperator.

    I cannot change the settings of my

    voice mail.

    Operator voice mail is managed byyour operator and not the phoneitself. Please contact your operatorshould you want to change thesettings.

    My handset keeps going into idle

    mode!

    If there are no key presses for 15seconds, the handset willautomatically return to idle mode. Itwill also return to idle modeautomatically when you place thehandset back on the base station (ifauto hang-up feature is on).

    Phonebook entry cannot be stored

    and MEMORY FULL is displayed!

    Delete an entry to free memorybefore saving your contact again.

    The PIN code is wrong!

    The default PIN is 0000. Reset the handset to revert to the

    default PIN code if it has beenchanged before (see Reset Unit onpage 31).

    The answering machine does not

    record calls.

    Make sure the answering machine isconnected to the power adaptor, and

    the power adaptor is plugged intomains supply which is switched on.

    Check if the answer machine is off, orAnswer only mode is selected.

    Check to see if the answering machineis memory full. If so, delete some orall messages.

    Try switching off the power at themains socket, and then turn it on againafter 1 minute.

    Unable to perform remote

    operation Make sure the remote access is on

    (see Section 8.6.2). Make sure you entered the correct

    remote access code. Use a touch-tone phone.

    If the above solutions do not help,remove the power from both thehandset and the base. Wait for 1 minuteand try again.
