9 VentilationSlots and openings in the cabinet are provided forventilation and to ensure reliable operation of theequipment and to protect it from overheating. Theopenings should never be blocked by placing theproduct on a bed, sofa, rug, or similar surface.Equipment should never be placed near or over aradiator or heat register, or in a built-in installationsuch as a bookcase or rack unless properventilation is provided.

10 Power sourcesThis product should be operated only from thetype of power sources indicated on the markinglabel. If you are not sure of the type of powersupplied to your home, consult your local powercompany. For equipment intended to operate frombattery power, or other sources, refer to theoperating instructions.

11 Ground or polarizationThis equipment may be equipped with a polarizedalternating-current line plug (a plug having oneblade wider than the other). This plug will fit intothe power outlet only one way. This is a safetyfeature. If you are unable to insert the plug fullyinto the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plugshould still fail to fit, contact your electrician toreplace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat thesafety purpose of the polarized plug.

12 Alternate warningsThis equipment may be equipped with a 3-wiregrounding-type plug, a plug having a third(grounding) pin. This pin will only fit into agrounding-type power outlet. This is a safetyfeature. If you are unable to insert the plug intothe outlet, contact your electrician to replace yourobsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purposeof the grounding-type plug.

13 Power cord protectionPower supply cords should be routed so that theyare not likely to be walked on or pinched by itemsplaced upon or against them, paying particularattention to cords at plugs, conveniencereceptacles, and the point where they exit fromthe appliance.

14 Outdoor Antenna GroundingIf an outside antenna or cable system is connectedto the equipment, be sure the antenna or cablesystem is grounded as to provide some protectionagainst voltage surges and built-up static charges.

15 LightningFor added protection for this equipment duringa lightning storm, or when it is left unattendedand unused for long periods of time, unplug itfrom the wall outlet and disconnect the antennaor cable system. This will prevent damage tothe video product due to lightning and powerline surges.

16 Power linesAn outside antenna system should not belocated in the vicinity of overhead power linesor where it can fall into such power lines orcircuits. When installing an outside antennasystem, extreme care should be taken to keepfrom touching such power lines or circuits ascontact with them may be fatal.

17 OverloadingDo not overload wall outlets and extensioncords as this can result in a risk of fire orelectrical shock.

18 Object and liquid entryNever push objects of any kind into thisequipment through openings as they may touchdangerous voltage points or short-out parts thatcould result in a fire or electrical shock. Neverspill liquid of any kind on the product.

19 ServicingDo not attempt to service this equipmentyourself as opening or removing covers mayexpose you to dangerous voltage or otherhazards, refer all servicing to qualifiedservice personnel.

20 Damage requiring serviceUnplug this equipment from the wall outlet andrefer servicing to qualified service personnel underthe following conditions:

a When the power supply cord or plug isdamaged.

b If the equipment has been exposed to rainor water.

c If liquid has been spilled, or objects have falleninto the equipment.

d If the equipment does not operate normally byfollowing the operating instructions. Adjustonly those controls that are covered by theoperating instructions as an improperadjustment of other controls may result indamage and will often require extensive workby a qualified technician to restore theequipment to its normal operation.

e If the equipment has been dropped or cabinethas been damaged.

f When the equipment exhibits a distinct changein performance, indicating a need for service.

21 Replacement partsWhen replacement parts are required, be sure theservice technician has used replacement partsspecified by the manufacturer or have the samecharacteristics as the original part. Unauthorizedsubstitutions may result in fire, electric shock, orother hazards.

22 Safety checkUpon completion of any service or repairs to thisvideo product, ask the service technician toperform safety checks to determine that theproduct is in proper operational condition.

23 Telephone equipmentObserve the following precautions when installingtelephone modem equipment:

a Never install telephone wiring during alightning storm.

b Never install telephone jacks in a wetlocation unless the jack is specifically designedfor wet locations.

c Never touch uninsulated telephone wires orterminals unless the telephone lines have beendisconnected at the network interface.

d Use caution when installing or modifyingtelephone lines.

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to General Instrument’s CFT-2100 set-top terminal, yourconnection to cable entertainment. The CFT-2100 features an easy-to-useon-screen display system to view channel listings, set channel controlpasswords and many other options that will enhance your television viewing.This guide introduces you to the CFT-2100 and provides instructions for setup and operation.

INTRODUCTION

Front PanelThe front-panel control keys can be used to operate the CFT-2100. The LEDdisplays the current channel number, time of day and special operatingmessages. The front-panel control keys are described further in the section,“Using the Remote Control.”

Always disconnect the power before moving theCFT-2100 or changing the cable connections.

Use this diagram to draw the cable connections from the back panel of theCFT-2100. You can use the diagram later to reconnect your system if youmove the equipment or add new equipment.

Key Description

1 F Displays the Quick Functions menu. To use quick functions:

• Press F and then press MUTE to set the best stereo level volume (press VOL �or� to return to normal)

• Press F and then press DELETE to clear favorite channel settings

• Press F and then press SELECT to cancel an Impulse Pay-Per-View event

• Press F and then press CATV to display the sleep timer screen (for complete instructions see the section,“Timers”)

2 NUMBER KEYS Are used to:

• Select a channel

• Enable a menu function

• Enter a password

Disabling the Remote ControlYou can temporarily disable your remote control:

1 On the main menu, select 7 CONTROL PANEL.

2 Select 2 DISABLE REMOTE and then press ENTER.

3 A confirmation screen appears on the display screen and the lettersrLo are displayed on the front panel LED.

Restoring the Remote ControlPress any key on the front panel of the CFT-2100 to restore the remotecontrol.

NOTEBatteries installed incorrectly can cause batteryleakage and corrosion that will damage theremote control.

Installing BatteriesBefore you can use the remote control, you must install two AAA (1.5-volt)alkaline batteries:

1 Press the battery cover on the back of the remote control and slideopen.

2 Insert two new batteries in the direction indicated on the inside of thebattery compartment.

3 Replace the battery cover.

If the CFT-2100 does not power on, check the orientation of the batteriesor replace with new batteries.

BASIC OPERATION

NOTETo receive cable service, tune your television tothe channel recommended by your local TV cableservice provider. Examples of channels used bycable service providers are 2, 3, 4 or 13.

Turning Power On and OffPress POWER on the front panel or press CATV on the remote control toturn the CFT-2100 on and off.

Adjusting the VolumePress VOLUME on the front panel of the CFT-2100 or VOL on the remotecontrol to adjust the volume. When you adjust the volume, the volume scaleis displayed on the screen. Press MUTE on the remote control to turn thesound off and on.

NOTEThe on-screen display is set on a 15-secondinternal timer. If you do not complete yourselection before timing out, you must start again.Read the instructions before beginning.

Using the On-Screen DisplayThe on-screen display contains easy-to-use menus for operating yourCFT-2100.

There are three main menus that enable you to access other screens. Wheninstructed to access the main menu always press MENU to display the firstmenu. Press CURSOR ▲ or ▼ or press PAGE ▲ or ▼ to navigate through themenus.

• Use the number keys on the remote control. For example, to changeto channel 10, press 1 and then press 0.

• Use the CHAN ▲ or ▼ to step through the channels.

Adding Favorite ChannelsYou can store your favorite channel numbers for quick and easy access.

To add favorite channels:

1 On the main menu, select 3 FAVORITE CHANNELS.

2 Select 1 FAV CHANNEL GUIDE.

3 Press CURSOR ▲ or ▼ to highlight the channel you want to add to thefavorite channel list and then press SELECT.

4 Press DISPLAY to exit.

To quickly add a favorite channel, press the channel number you would liketo add and then press PROG.

Tuning Favorite ChannelsTo tune a favorite channel, press FAV on the remote control. Continuepressing FAV to step through all of your selected favorite channels.

Removing Favorite ChannelsTo remove favorite channels:

1 On the main menu, select 3 FAVORITE CHANNELS.

To quickly remove a favorite channel, press the channel number you wouldlike to delete and then press DELETE.

Adding PasswordsThe parental control and the Impulse Pay-Per-View features enable you tocontrol channel access using a password. You can create a differentpassword for each. You can lock and unlock channels at anytime.

To create a four-digit password (for example, 1234):


2 Select 4 SET PASSWORDS.

3 Select 1 PARENTAL CONTROL or 2 PAY-PER-VIEW.

4 Enter your four-digit password using the remote control and thenpress ENTER.

5 Verify the password by entering the same digits again and thenpress ENTER.

Tuning Channels with Parental ControlTo tune a channel locked by the parental control feature:

1 Tune to the channel you want to watch.

2 Press SELECT to access the Unlock Box Password screen.

3 Enter your four-digit parental control password and then press ENTER.

When you unlock a channel, all channels are accessible until they are locked again.A key icon displays when the channel is unlocked.

To re-lock channels:

1 On the main menu, select 2 PARENTAL CONTROL.

2 Select 2 LOCK BOX to lock channels.

3 Begin normal operation.

IMPULSE PAY-PER-VIEW

NOTE

For instructions on recording events reference thesection, ”Recording Programs.”

Impulse Pay-Per-View is an optional feature that enables you to purchasespecial programming without a phone call to your cable service provider.You can control the purchase of programs by setting a password.

To purchase Impulse Pay-Per-View events:

1 Tune to the channel broadcasting the Impulse Pay-Per-View event.

2 When an E flashes on the front-panel LED, press SELECT to purchasethe event.

3 Enter your Impulse Pay-Per-View password and then press ENTER.

To cancel the purchase, press F and then press SELECT. If you can’t cancel theevent, call your cable service provider.

You can set your CFT-2100 to tune a channel at a specific time for VCRrecording. If the channel you are recording is password controlled, such as aparentally controlled channel, you must enter your password to setrecording options.

When you use the CFT-2100 to record programs on your VCR, the remotecontrol is automatically disabled to prevent accidental changing of channels.The remote control is restored when the recording process is complete.

1 On the main menu, select 4 VCR TIMERS.

2 Press CURSOR ▲ or ▼ to find the first available recording slot and thenpress ENTER.

3 Press SELECT to highlight:

Setting Alarm TimersYou can program the CFT-2100 to turn itself on or off every day using theTURN-ON TIMER and TURN-OFF TIMER screens:

1 On the main menu, select 5 ALARM TIMERS.

2 Select 2 TURN ON TIMER to turn the timer on, or select3 TURN OFF TIMER to turn the timer off.

3 Press CURSOR ▲ or ▼ to the desired time and then press ENTER toaccept and exit, or press DELETE to clear timer settings and exit.

If you hold down the CURSOR ▲ or ▼ key, the time will increment in15 minute intervals.

Setting Sleep TimersThe sleep timer feature enables you to program the CFT-2100 to turn offafter a preset amount of time.

To set the sleep timer:

1 On the main menu, select 5 ALARM TIMERS and then press ENTER.

A red message indicator light on the front panel will appear when you have ageneral information message. To read general information messages:

Changing the BackgroundYou can change the appearance of the on-screen display by changing thebackground.

The two selections that can be changed are MENU (on-screen display) andSTATUS (Channel Guide and Channel Lock screens).

To change the background:

1 On the main menu select 7 CONTROL PANEL.

2 Select 1 MODIFY DISPLAY.

3 Select 1 CHANGE BACKGROUND.

4 Press SELECT to highlight MENU and then press ENTER to highlight thebackground option you want to change to:

• CLR for the letters to appear over the TV program

• BOX for the letters to appear against a black box background

• FULL for the letters to appear against a solid black screen

Your CFT-2100 can be set to display the time of day on the front-panel LED.If you choose to display the time, the channel number appears only whentuning channels.

To display the time:

The AC outlet feature enables you to turn your TV and CFT-2100 on and offat the same time. To use this feature, insert your TV electrical plug into theAC outlet on the back panel. This feature is set to SWITCHED OUTLET atthe factory. To disable, you must change the setting.

3 Press SELECT to highlight UNSWITCHED to turn each unit offseparately.

DEFAULT SETTINGS



Restoring the system to default settings erases all of your selections forscreen appearance, screen position, optional time display, and AC outlet use.It does not erase passwords or reset timers.

The default settings are:

• A black box for the on-screen display appears in the lower center ofthe screen

• The channel number appears on the front-panel LED

• The AC outlet is set to SWITCHED, controlling both the TV andCFT-2100

To restore default settings:


2 Select 5 RESET DEFAULTS.

3 The system is reset to default settings and exits.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The remote control is notresponding

Check for an obstruction between the remote control and the CFT-2100.

Check that the batteries have been installed properly and replace with new batteries if necessary.

Check if the remote control has been deactivated.

There is no sound comingfrom the TV

Check to see if the sound has been turned down.

Press MUTE on the remote control to restore sound.

The word MUTE will not appear when the system displays:

• Active Menu screens

• Event screens

• Credit screens

• Parental control screens

The CFT-2100 is notreceiving a cable signal

Turn on your TV only to see if you are getting a video signal. If you are not, call your cable serviceprovider.

Check that the cables are securely connected.
