The Mannum Roos Netball Club capped off a successful season with their combined Juniors and Seniors Presentation Night on Friday September 20 th at the Mannum Community Club. Craig Berlin was awarded the May Bock Perpetual Trophy for Clubperson of the Year, after going above and beyond for the Netball Club in 2013. The evening concluded with the presentation of the A Grade Premiership team. Kate Murdoch Mannum Football Club I stated in last month’s Mannum Mag article that both the Mannum “A” grade side and the Under 15 side had put themselves in contention for the ultimate prize – a premiership in both grades. Well, you would all be aware by now that our future champions, the Under 15s, really gave the undefeated Mypo a run for their money and went under by just 11 points. They actually led at ¾ time, 9 goals to 5 goals 8 points, but could not contain the good players of Mypo in the last quarter. It was a really good effort by “Farmer” and the boys however and they would be well satisfied with their year. The League side did everyone proud and rattled home to beat Imperials by 23 points. We were 2 goals down at ¾ time but kicked eight glorious goals to two in the last quarter. It was a great team effort by all the players and well coached by Shane Yeates on the day. It was evident that a number of players benefited from having the experienced players around them and many made valuable contributions. The crowd support from Mannum supporters was magnificent – no one wanted to miss this game and we easily outnumbered the supporters from Imperials. To Shane, to all the support staff and especially to the players, our congratulations for teaming well to win the 2013 flag. It requires a big effort to win a flag. By now you will havereceived the new VisitorsGuide. It is also available, incolour, from our website menuor Extras page.

This does not replace theannual Visitor Guide &Holiday Issue, now simplycalled the Holiday Issue.

The Holiday Issue is anoppor tuni ty for loca lbusinesses, clubs, servicep r o v i d e r s a n d o t h e rorganisations to tell you andvisitors about the servicesprovided and events beingheld during the holiday period. It is also a forum for holidaymessages from our Council,Police and the local churchesvia the Interchurch Council.

The primary purpose of thenew Visitors Guide is topromote Mannum as a year-round destination. It providesbrief, enticing descriptions ofthe attractions in and aroundMannum. The reader thengoes to the Visitor InformationCentre to collect detailedbrochures on the attractionsthat interest them.

Please read this trial editionof the Guide with a criticaleye. Leave your suggestionsfor additions, deletions orcorrections at the InformationCentre. Collectively, youknow the best features thatsho u ld b e p r o mo ted ,encouraging visitors to come, stay and play in our region.

We have the replacement forour oldest printer. It is a littlefaster and both printers nowuse the same consumables.

Many thanks to the MidMurray Council for theinterest free loan to helppurchase the new printer.

We had to preprint the redsections of the front page ofthe Holiday issue before thered print drum left with the oldprinter. In our rush, theHoliday Issue for this year willstill be titled Visitor Guide &Holiday Issue. By the end ofnext year we should have a redprint drum for the currentprinters and will havecorrected the title of theHoliday Issue.

Low Standards?Dear Editor,I wish to reply to Kitty

Schiansky (My View, Issue 80,June 2013).

I am the driver of the truckLow Standards mentioned in thearticle. I have driven trucks ofthis size for ten years with aclean driving record. No crashesor demerits in over two millionkilometres. I drive down theMain Street of Mannumregularly and often twice perday.

Ms Schiansky has a right toher opinion, but she has madesome factual errors.

The name Low Standards is anoxymoron. Sure the truckdelivers stock feed to dairymenand is driven in, and issometimes covered in, whatcomes out of the cows. Theoxymoron is the driver of thetruck. That was an oxymoron, not a moron.

Myself and my boss have veryhigh standards. High standardsof service, driving ability andreliability, but most of allfriendship and humour.

This job is long hours, in allweather, with testing deadlinesbut the people that you meet inthis industry are some of the bestthat walk on earth and a few ofthe worst.

If my crime is laughing tomuch in my days work I pleadguilty. If I cant laugh and makeothers smile I have wasted a day.Farmers and ferry driverssometimes do not have much tosmile at. I thoroughly enjoy mywork.

I did notice the crossing inMannum that day but I did notnotice the lady or her guide dog.

Guide dog? She must have onebecause I cart potatoes notonions. I laugh not cry.

Everything the lady and herdear dog eat, wear, etc comesoff the back of a truck.

I feel sorry for that dog andanyone she cooks for. Mashedonion is not my thing andimagine what that poor dog hasto eat.

    Now I hope she understands,

just because I put my name onthe letter I do not want a datewith her but I do love Labradors.I dont reckon I could live witha woman who couldnt smell thedifference between onions andpotatoes even if she relies on adog to see.

Obviously there was anoxymoron on the truck and amoron on the footpath that day.And that poor dog having tolead a kitty and not chase cats.

I do enjoy the Mannum magand the low standards of editing, only kidding the editing is cool.

Yours, laughing his head off.Danny Stroebel

The HallDear Editor,How disappointing and heart

breaking to read in the MannumMag (Issue 82, August 2013)The Hall (Mental HealthActivity and Resource Centre)as you have known it for the lastseven years will be no more.

Ive read The Hall reports witha growing concern as the MHAL(Mental Health Activity andLearning) was originally startedby a small group of dedicated, passionate people for mentalhealth consumers, carers, peoplewith disabilities and supportivecommunity members.

How could the currentchairperson say they hope thestigma of the last 7 years can beput behind them as they get onwith the job.?

There will always be peoplewho stigmatise others for whothey are or what they do orwhere they go. But many peoplefound The MHAL and then TheHall, to which it was renamedwhen a mental health marketinggrant was a received, a safe andsupporting place. For some itgave focus to their day, toactually get up and get organisedand get out of the house, breaking down the barriers ofisolation and self stigmatisation. It had been said The Hall Gavethem wings. The Hall at thatstage had wonderful, careingpeople, and everyone shouldknow that depression stiflesmany a good person.

Creative, frugal management,Council, community, businessesand the Lions support turned anold disused Scout Hall andovergrown yard into a vibrantplace, not at all stigmatisedunder the mental health name.

Grants were applied for ando b t a i n e d f o r m a n yimprovements including a newkitchen and appliances, all underthe unashamed banner of mentalhealth, thus improving the livesof those with mental illness.

When The Hall was taken overby different people I stoppedgoing and helping out, notapproving of many things thenew committee were doing, asdid others.

Shame on the currentcommittee and its chairperson.Shame, shame, shame on you.Hang your heads in shame asyou have offended too manypeople with the comments youmade in the Mannum Mag. Theworld is trying to break downthe ignorance of mental health, there are advertisements all overthe TV and radio trying to breakdown these barriers, and you hadthe nerve to write what you did!

I believe you are now notgoverned by any mental healthgroup in SA (Mannum Mag,Issue 82) and I also believe youhave had the bus taken awayfrom you (Mannum Mag, Issue83). I wonder why?

Yes, you are on your own(Mannum Mag, Issue 82) arentyou? You dont deserve to usethe good name of The Hall. Whowould want to drop into yourdrop in centre? Who would wantto be seen as bringing a stigmawith us?

Janet Grabowski(with the support of too many to list)

Free SpeechDear Editor,While welcoming the view of the

trio of contributors to Letters(September 2013), regardingnegativity, theyve not realised thepotential for elevating complaint intodiscussion; thereby tackling thespecifics of that which offends them.In contrast to the pervasive, one-way,electronic chatter, Mannum Magoffers this privileged opportunity fora considered exchange of ideas.

Each of us harbors prejudice. Itseasy to vaguely dismiss the concernsof others because they unsettle ourcomplacency; rather, the realitycheck of constructing soundargument and inviting a response.

The editorial balance is excellent, providing a candid mirror oncommunity; lets hold off on issuingrose-tinted glasses. Instead, letsengage.

What better model of engagementt h a n J a c q u i a n d M a xMerckenschlager? Poetic andprofound. Words that linger. I hopethe rivers a sufficient link betweenMannum and (the return to)Riverglades that they continue their, against the flow, contributions. Inthe meantime, Thanks.

Dear Editor,That local people elect to be vocal

about their community in the localMannum Mag is neither sad nornecessarily contagious. It is, at leastfor now, a right people are able toexercise if they so choose.

People brave enough to openlyvoice their opinions in the local paperalso deserve some respect foraccepting the consequences of what itmeans to do so in a small countrytown. Anonymity is not an option forsome.

I, for one, find a little more of theunvarnished truth refreshing. Whenbright optimism turns into aPollyanna-ish desire for nothing butgood news and rose colouredreporting, the ability to cast ajudicious, analytical eye over what isreally going on out there, is lost.

    M.G. Bottroff

Accentuate the PositiveDear Editor,As a permanent resident of

Mannum for nearly 40 years I refuseto take part in the negativity beingaired at the moment.

However, I do feel it necessary tospeak positively of The Hall.

During my life in Mannum I haveexperienced many Health issues, including severe Depression, loneliness and a very low self esteem.

I have welcomed the opportunity tohave a safe and friendly centre tovisit without fear of retribution, andbe accepted for myself with respect.

I have now regained my selfconfidence, kicked The Black Dogout the door, via the valuablefriendships made at The Hall andseveral other Community Services.

I say a Big THANK YOU to all theCommunity Services and thecountless Volunteers involved inproviding these services. WithoutVolunteers these Services would notbe possible.

From Your Local MemberMr Ivan Venning MP, Member for Schubert

    Pre-harvest Warning

Member for Schubert, Ivan Venning is warning farmers to bevigilant this coming harvest, to ensure they are complyingwith rules and regulations regarding the movement of large farmmachinery.

Mr Venning, a grain grower himself, said primary producers facean increasing amount of legislation that they have to understandand comply with.

Be aware of your responsibilities, get a copy of the Code ofPractice for Oversize or Overmass Agricultural Vehicles, read itand keep a copy in your farm library for future reference, he said.

Farmers need to be careful and be aware of what the law says, particularly in relation to bins on roads and carrying the appropriatepaperwork in the tractor or vehicle.

They need to be aware that the mandatory flashing yellowwarning light is clearly visible for five hundred metres in anydirection - if it takes more than one light to achieve this, then installanother he said, Installing it on the underside of the silo with amagnetic base can be a solution.

Mr Venning would like to try and amend the laws in relation tothe movement of farm machinery.

Grape harvesters are able to be moved at night, following strictconditions, so I cannot understand why other farm machinery is notable to be moved at night with similar safeguards?

The current Code of Practice prohibits the movement of oversizeor overmass agricultural vehicles between sunset and sunrise.

Surely it would improve safety for everyone if the rules wereamended to allow the movement of farm machinery at night, butwith strict conditions.

Often it is much safer to move such large machinery andequipment at night, as there is much less traffic.

If any farmers experience issues or difficulties in relation tocompliance or feel they have been unfairly penalised please feelfree to contact my office and I will try to assist in whatever way Ican.

However, I urge all farmers to be careful It is not worth takingrisks said Mr Venning.

WorkCover PerformanceMr Venning recently moved a motion in Parliament condemning

the government for the continuingpoor performance of Workcover. He described WorkCover as the worst performing workers

compensation scheme in the country, with the levy payable bybusiness, the funding rate and the return to work rate all the poorestin the country.

The WorkCover unfunded liability has increased from $56million in 2001 to $1.4 billion an increase of 2,380 per cent.

Why should South Australian businesses suffer the highestworkers compensation costs in Australia? How can our businessesbe competitive? asked Mr Venning.

The [Occupational Safety, Rehabilitation and CompensationCommittee] report was very comprehensive and contained 23recommendations aimed at improving the system.

There are many simple solutions outlined in this report thatcould be implemented to improve return to work rates and reducethe unfunded liability.

On an apolitical basis we should say, Okay, well implementthis. Action must be taken to fix the mess that WorkCover hasbecome.

  • Hymn-lovers Sing

About 30 people gathered in the Mannum Uniting Church on Sunday 22nd

September to sing some of our favourite hymns. We started with All Hailthe Power of Jesus Name and finished with A Mighty Fortress is our God,but mixed in with boisterous songs of praise were quieter hymns like Take myLife and Abide with Me.

The hymns had been chosen by members of the community, and there wassomething for everyone. Heather Payne and Lyn Gross led the singing withtheir amazing skills on the organ.

A tasty afternoon tea halfway through was a welcome way of regaining ourbreath.

The Hymn-Lovers Sing was an initiative of the Mannum Interchurch Council. The next Hymn-Lovers Sing will be held in January and everyone is welcome.

Look in the December issue of the Mag for details about the date and place. Andsend in your requests to Carl and Lyn Gross at 8569 7392 or 0405 098 450.

    Mental MusingsMental Health Week

Why choose mental health: why not?

As we have previously mused, itsnot just the absence of mentalillness.

Good mental health is feeling goodabout ourselves and lives withimproved self-esteem and confidenceso we can then better respond to stressas it comes.

Taking a proactive role in our ownmental health and that of thosearound us is good for our communityand is early intervention at its best.

This starts with looking out forothers, those closest, whether family, friends or acquaintances fromparticular areas of our lives. Checkthat theyre doing okay, and alsodont be afraid to talk to someoneyou can trust if you are not.

Verbalising thoughts and feelingscan be beneficial as can being a goodlistener for someone else.

Time and space to talk throughissues often brings a solution. Thiskind of support can often be enoughto bring about change in the life ofsomeone we know or ourselves. But if that niggling feeling persists, thatsomething is not quite right foryourself or someone you know, thenext step in early intervention istalking to a professional counsellor.

There is definitely no shame orblame in this and new skills can belearnt from connecting with othersand building resilience. This will alsohelp decide if a clinical assessment isneeded and if additional clinicalsupport or more specialised carewould be helpful.

Remember the old saying a stitchin time saves nine and so it is withmental health; the earlier the betterthat something is done.

    Ageing in the Murraylandswith Millie

No, you cant go back home.Of course youve been herebefore. What! Cant you remember?

These are just a few examplesof how we can speak tosomeone else and not thinkabout the impact of our words.

Imagine if it is your memorythats failing. (OK, this mightnot be an exercise in imaginationafter all!) But, do you reallywant other people to knowyoure losing it? Could it be thatyou already feel pretty miserableabout this ageing business?Could it be that you just wantthe rest of the world to treat youkindly and patiently?

I cringe when I hear commentslike those above. Maybe they arepart of a certain kind ofbonhomie, of satirical humour,or part of the give-and-take offriendship. But even so, theyhave the power to hurt, and hurtdeeply. They might even spoilthe other persons enjoyment ofan event, or make them grumpyfor the rest of the day.

One day, a certain MrsTsiolkas gave a visiting3-year-old boy a light tap on thebottom for ignoring her pleas tostop opening cupboards, banging

pots and pans. He turned around, hands on his hips, and said toher: No one has the right totouch my body without mypermission.

She recounted the incident toher son, Christos, and so wasborn his book The Slap. To hisgreat astonishment, the book hasbeen published in 28 countries, sold 1.2 million copies, and wasmade into an ABC televisionseries in 2011. He commentedrecently, There are moments ofdelusional self-belief that sustainme in this life but much moreoften the voice on my shoulderis telling me how shit I am. Thatvoice is never going to whisper,This thing is going to sell amillion copies! (The WeekendAustralian Magazine September21-22 2013)

Christoss image of himself asworthless is common to many ofus. How much it is reinforced bythoughtless comments that mockpoor memory, or just being a bitslow on the uptake. Sadly, Isuspect we women are better atthis personal ridicule than men.

  • Out Of This WorldAstronomers Corner

At around 10pm the constellation of Capricorn isoverhead and the tail of the Scorpion is setting in thesouth-west.

The galactic clouds that are formed along with vast star clusters at thecentre of the Milky Way galaxy may, under the right climatic conditionshere on earth, appear a smoky blue colour. With a pair of binocularsgathering the light many millions of stars in groups with names like theJewel Box and the Lagoon Nebula are bought to the focus of the eye.

The early evening planets are Venus, very bright at -4.4 magnitude,Jupiter (-2.3), Saturn and Mercury. The giant Jupiter sets after midnight.Mars rises before the Sun but with the planets grouping somewhat, as theywill over the month, photo opportunities abound for the planets and theirbrightness.

One of the most overlooked pieces of equipment in astronomy is the clockor time piece. It is vital for monitoring the rising and setting times of starsand planets and is a start to understanding star time (sidereal time). Manytime pieces, such as modern wrist watches, have multiple functions that arehelpful when travelling on land or sea and in astronomy. Being able tolocate constellations along with time zones is assisted by such devicesshowing meridian hours and providing a reference to the constellations.

The constellation of Orion at one extreme of the Earths orbit marks thestart of summer in some parts of the world. The constellation Scorpius at theother extreme is another marker. Being familiar with these two groups is astart to finding other objects; similar to knowing where the north and southpoles are when in the remote areas of Earth. Knowing that Orion is in the5th hour right ascension and Scorpius is on or near the 16th hour you canfind them using your Norton star atlas or electronic hand held planetariumin your backyard observatory.

Pause A Whilewith Mannum Interchurch Council

When Jesus told hisaudience to love God andlove their neighbour (Luke10:26-28), some smart alecksaid, Okay Jesus, answer thisone: Who is my neighbour? Then Jesus told the story of thegood Samaritan which basicallymade it clear that everyone youmeet in your life is yourneighbour. That was 2000 yearsago and it holds as powerfullytoday. Everyone you meet inMannum and beyond is,according to Jesus, yourneighbour. A good neighbourwill take the time to helpsomeone in trouble. All of ushave struggles and problems, and we all also have theGod-given responsibility andGod-given ability to help calmthe storms in other peopleslives.

We can do this by reallylistening to everyone we meet.We can listen with our eyes as well as

    our ears. Over 80% of humancommunication is non-verbal.Watch the persons face, theirmovements and you will hearthem even better;

    put aside our own concernswhile we are with the person.Put their agenda first. Givethem our full attention. If youare thinking about what youwill say next while the otherperson is talking, then you arenot focused on them;

make time for the person youare talking with. If you are ina hurry, ask to set a time tomeet later and reassure them

you are really interested tohear what they have to say. When we do these three things

in our listening, we are lovingand caring for the person we aretalking to. As the person you arelistening to experiences yourattention, they will feel they arenot alone in their struggle. Themore they feel they are notalone, the more their anxiety andworry will subside, and the morepeaceful they will feel inside. Asthey say, a problem shared is aproblem halved. By listening tosomeone you may not changethe problem, but your listeningwill change the person.

Some may say, What if theperson I meet rejects me? I say,So what! That is a risk of life. When you love others, you alsotake a risk. Not to risk is not tolove.

As followers of Jesus, we arecalled to make each person wemeet feel as though they areloved. The best way do this is tomake time to be with them.Make the effort to listen to themwith your eyes and ears. Andmake space in your mind byputting aside your agenda andputting their agenda first.

If we all do this with everyonewe meet, we will experience asense of love, belonging andpurpose that will bring an innerpeace to all our people. This willgo a long way to helping us bean even stronger and moreinclusive community.

Give it a try and you will bevery, very surprised.

Just A ThoughtFalling down and getting up

With the exception of the very illand elderly, I am yet to comeacross anyone who tripped and fellstill literally sitting there two orthree days later. Common sense (or isit instinct?) compels us to get up,dust ourselves off as best as we canand be on our way. Why thenprecious one do you berate yourselfover an incident that you are betteroff walking away from? Have younot sat down and wept long enough?Do not give it power to stop youfrom getting to where you wereheaded. I dare you to arise, cast yourburden unto the Lord and let eachstep that you take forward eventhough painful, take you furtheraway from the place you fell (i.e. gothurt, made a mistake, etc.) just athought!

Introducing my new favouritesalad dressing, derived from arecipe I stumbled across in amagazine some time ago; Icannot recall its name. If therecipe rings a bell with you Iwould be interested to find outwhich magazine it was.

I have developed a taste fordrizzling salad dressing oversteamed vegetables to add moreflavour interest and I can highlyrecommend using this dressingto do just this for a switch up.It will keep nicely in a sealedcontainer for up to a week in therefrigerator. Having a bit ofsweetness in a dressing canbalance out the flavours andusing raisins to do this (sultanasand dried apricots work also)restricts the use of refinedsugars. Hope you enjoy it. Getcreative; there are endless waysto switch it up whilemaintaining the basic principleof the recipe. See my top tipsbelow.

Spring Chicken Salad1 chicken breast fillet cup frozen peas1 cup snow peas, washed and

trimmed1 small zucchini, thinly sliced into

half moons3 cups mixed lettuce leaves100g feta, cut into small cubes50g slivered almonds, and 20g

extra for garnish cup mint leaves (stripped from

stems) cup mixed fresh soft herbs retain

    some for garnishDressing

50g raisins, soaked in boiling waterfor 15 minutes, then drained

1 tbsp of vinegar1 tbsp of olive oil1 tbsp of lemon juice6 anchovies2 tsp capers1. Prepare a steaming pan or

electric steamer, steam chickenbreast until cooked through, 15to 20 minutes depending onthickness of chicken. Cool, placeon plate, cover and chill(alternatively use cold roastchicken, skin removed).

    2. Place frozen peas, snow peasand zucchini in a bowl, coverwith boiling water. Cover withcling wrap, allow to steep for 3minutes.

While the above is steeping, gathera large bowl and a smaller sieve orcolander that will easily fit inside thebowl. Place a medium tray of icecubes into the bowl.3. Drain peas and zucchini using

the sieve or colander and reston the ice in the bowl, cover withcold water. This stops thecooking process immediatelyand refreshes the peas andzucchini.

    4. When the peas and zucchini arecold and refreshed remove fromice and drain very well (I usesome paper towel to pat dryalso).

    5. Using a blender blitz all dressingingredients together.

    6. Combine salad ingredients inthe bowl that had the ice in it.Slice steamed chicken into bitesized pieces. Place allingredients (except dressing)into the bowl, toss gently.

    7. Just before serving drizzle overthe salad, just enough dressingto lightly coat ingredients(remember it will keep in therefrigerator).

    8. Serve with some extra fresh softherbs and slivered almonds.

TOP TIPS As suggested for the dressing

switch up the dried fruit. Think Iwill try dried apples next!

I am going to make this into afish dish in the near future. Omitthe chicken, make the salad asabove. When serving place afillet of grilled fish on top of thesalad.

There are many soft herbs thatcould be used: mint, coriander, parsley, basil, dill (this will workwhen I try the fish version), Thaibasil, lemon thyme, oregano andchives or even rocket leaves orspring onions.

Cheers and happy cooking. Iam always happy to have aFoodies chat at MMSS. Phone8569 2129 or [email protected]

    Meldanda Campsite

The Ridley and Mannum LionsClub members worked togetherto serve up healthy chicken and saladyiros to more than 400 hungrystudents from across the region at therecent launch of the MeldandaCampsite at Cambrai.

On Monday 23rd September, theLions Clubs used their incredibleexperience in catering for communityevents and functions to partner with

    Woodswallow Nomads

They follow a locust swarmdown from the inland and, like locusts, they dont hangaround for long, just enough tohave a good feed. I saw a flockcircling overhead three weeksago, enjoying the spring showersand emerging moths. You mightthink they are welcomeswallows at first. Their wingsand movements are similar, butthey are square-tailed and larger. If youre lucky, as I was inspring 2010, they might alight inyour front garden for a serve ofsweets. Our emu bushes werein full flower and a mixed flockof masked and white-browedwoodswallows visited brieflyevery morning for a week,

chatter ing and sunningthemselves, displaying theirwonderful colours. These twospecies flock together withnearly one hundred individualstravelling together and roostingnoisily in nearby trees, thoughgalahs beat them hands down involume.

Today, on my walk up the hillto get our mail, I was remindedhow lucky weve been ascustodians of this link in thewildlife corridor from the riveralong Reedy Creek to MannumWaterfalls. White browedBabblers scratched amongst theleaf litter, a spotted Pardaloteinspected the backs of leaves ofa low eucalypt, too engrossed to

notice me, several low flyinggalahs squawked and wheeledand spiny-cheeked honeyeatersgurgled sweetly.

Yes, well miss our youngwoodland and its wildlife. Thegecko below is a permanentresident. We find him under logsand in the solar power roomwhere he hunts for insects. Ihope well be invited back bywhoever takes over.
