MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2018

FOREWORD TO THE REPORT

Welcome to the 2018 Annual Report of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club (MWRLFC).

The Board of the MWRLFC produces this report each year as its contribution to the history and record keeping of the Club and the Sea Eagles. The Football Club in its current and previous form has produced an Annual Report every year since 1947.

By producing this report we do not purport to represent ourselves (the MWRLFC) as the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Limited which is a separate legal entity administering and funding the Team.

In 2019 it will be 15 years since members of the Manly-Warringah District Rugby League Football Club voted, on 3 June 2004, to privatise the Club and establish the entity, the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Limited (MWSE Ltd) which took over the administration of the Football Team.

It was a difficult decision for those members who took part in that vote but, ultimately, a question of the financial survival of our Club.

The new legal entity of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club Limited was established to continue and grow the membership.

A lot has changed since then, principally the ownership structure and Board composition, but also the membership function with the MWSE Ltd taking over the season ticket memberships and creating what we now know as “Sea Eagles Memberships”.

What hasn’t changed is the fact that the MWRLFC Ltd holds the Preference Share in the MWSE Ltd which gives our members, through their right to vote, determination over the Team’s name, colours and its home ground, as well as two voting positions on the MWSE Ltd Board which has seven members.

That’s why it’s important that the MWRLFC remains a strong voice for our members, some of whom have been with the Club for over 50 years. We want to grow our membership further so our place within the Sea Eagles structure cannot be ignored should there ever be further, major changes to the ownership or governance of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Limited.

Having said that, we also urge our members wherever possible and affordable, to also be members of the Sea Eagles. Along with attendance figures at home games, NRL membership numbers are a strong indicator of a Club’s health. We have been lagging in both – a situation we need to address together.

This report has been compiled from publicly available data, individuals who have provided written reports and our own records. The compilation and design of the Report is done by Board members in their own time. Only the cost of printing the Report is funded by the MWRLFC and its members.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

It’s a pleasure as Chairman of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club to once more present the Annual Report.

I would firstly like to thank you, our members, for your continued support. Our membership is made up of the most passionate Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles fans. But more than that, our members are fully committed to the purpose and existence of our Football Club and our continuing place within the broader Sea Eagles family.

It’s often said that sport can be cruel, and rugby league is no exception. The Sea Eagles NRL season 2018 can be characterised as one of missed opportunities and poor decision making at critical times.

We lost six games by six points or less. Three of those were by a single point. There were two games where we surrendered a substantial lead in the second half – both of them in front of our own fans at Brookvale Oval.

Once again we suffered significant injuries throughout the year requiring 29 players to complete the season and causing ongoing disruption to our key on-field combinations.

But there were also some entertaining and gutsy wins. Who will forget smashing the Parramatta Eels 54-0 in the sweltering heat at our first Brooky game, and the wins against the Storm in Melbourne, Cronulla at Shark Park, Penrith out west and, best of all, the Broncos at Suncorp.

I would like to acknowledge our Head Coach Trent Barrett and his team. To say it was a difficult year is an understatement. On behalf of the Board, I thank Trent for his service to our Club and wish he and his family all the very best for the future.

In spite of the disappointing season, our Club had a large number of players represent their country throughout the year – they are listed in the Report. It was particularly pleasing to see Club Captain Daly-Cherry Evans join Jake and Tom Trbojevic in the Australian team, having captained the PM’s XIII to victory against the PNG Kumuls in that highly entertaining spectacle in Port Moresby.

The Sea Eagles also welcomed some new players to the Club. On the top of the list and playing every game was Joel Thompson. Joel has added both experience and leadership to our Club this year both on and off the field. His work in the community was acknowledged by a nomination for the prestigious Ken Stephens medal.

Each player who made their debut for the Club was given their unique, player number, including Lachlan Croker who, when he ran on the field for us against Newcastle in the first round became player number 600.

It’s always with sadness that we farewell players - on behalf of the Board and our members, we wish all those who won’t be with the Sea Eagles in 2019 the very best in their future careers.

Although it was also a disappointing season for our ISP team, the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles, and the Jersey Flegg (under 20s) team with both narrowly missing out on the finals, our junior representative teams - the Harold Matthews and SG Ball – fared better, both making the finals with the Matts taking out the trophy - an historic first for our Club. Congratulations to the players and their coach Trevor Ott.

From a Board perspective we are pleased to have been joined after the last Annual General Meeting by Life Member Alan Thompson. Alan is not only a legend of our Club as a former premiership winning player, but by joining our Board brings a wealth of experience and Club history as well as restoring the traditional link between the Football Club and the Leagues Club. Sadly, our esteemed fellow member Mary Finkelsen resigned from the Board due to work commitments. We thank Mary for the energy and ideas she brought to the Board.

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2018

2018 also marked two significant anniversaries for the Sea Eagles - the 10th anniversary of our re-cord 40-0 Premiership against the Melbourne Storm in 2008 and the 40th anniversary of the incred-ible 16-0 Premiership against the Cronulla Sharks in the grand final replay in 1978.

The Football Club worked with Alan Thompson, Max Krilich and Ian Thomson, Chairman of the Leagues Club, to organise the reunion of the mighty ‘78 Premiership Team. It was a great night made all the better by the Team performing a spontaneous and rousing rendition of the Manly victory song. On behalf of our Board and members I was honoured to present each of the players with a specially commissioned MWRLFC cap featuring their individual player number.

As is sadly the case each year, we have lost some beloved and loyal members of our Club as well as former players. Our thoughts go out to their families and our thanks for their association with our Club, in whatever capacity.

Last but certainly not least I would like to thank my fellow Board members – Nick Curulli, David O’Donnell, Alan Thompson, Julie Sibraa and Scotty Wilcox - for their continuing service to the Club. We do this work on a voluntary basis because we love the Club and our Team, and share a commitment to continuing the heritage and traditions of the Club.

On a personal note I was extremely honoured to have been inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame along with my old scoring partner, Steve “Beaver” Menzies. As I said on the night I could not have done it without the support of my wife Karen, my entire family and of course our fans.

To all our members – have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. I look forward to seeing you all at Brookvale Oval on Saturday 23 March 2019 for our first home game against the 2018 Premiers, the Roosters. GO MANLY!

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2018

The 2018 NRL season certainly did not produce the success we all aspire to, on or off the field.

To finish in 15th position with just seven wins from 24 matches was disappointing for a Club, with the rich and proud history we are built on. We were all hoping for better results, and we know we can and will do better moving forward. Having said that, we had some memorable victories against the likes of Brisbane at Suncorp and the Melbourne Storm, Penrith and Sharks on their respective home turfs.

Our playing group should be commended for its determination to continue to search for success during some difficult times this season, despite an unfortunate run of injuries to key players and seven losses by 6 points or less. Taniela Paseka, Manase Fainu and Tom Wright made their NRL debuts while Lachlan Croker, Jack Gosiewski, Toafofoa Sipley, Moses Suli and Joel Thompson made their Club debuts. All did the Sea Eagles jersey proud.

On the representative front, it was great to see the likes of proud Manly juniors, Jake and Tom Trbojevic, star for NSW in the Blues’ Origin winning series. Tom was nearly the player of the series in what was an incredible first Origin series for him as he turned in some dominating performances on the wing. It was also very pleasing to see our Captain, Daly Cherry-Evans, turn in an outstanding performance in his recall to the Qld Origin team in Game 3.

This was backed up by Daly being recalled to the Australian Kangaroos team for the Test matches against New Zealand and Tonga. He was joined in both Tests by Jake and Tom Trbojevic, with all three up against their Manly team-mate Addin Fonua-Blake for the historic Test against Tonga. Martin Taupau added to his impressive New Zealand career with a Test match against Australia and two Tests against England. In June, Akuila Uate represented Fiji while Jorge Taufua played his first Test match for Samoa after previously representing Tonga. Fonua-Blake also represented Tonga against Samoa. Brian Kelly also pulled on the green and gold for the first time by representing the Prime Minister’s XIII team in Papua New Guinea in September.

On the awards front, Jake Trbojevic claimed the Roy Bull ‘Best and Fairest’ Award for the second time in four years. This prestigious award is named after our first international player. Joel Thompson was a popular winner of the NRL Players’ Player award and the Doug Daley Clubman of the Year award in recognition of his outstanding work in the community that also saw him nominated again for the prestigious RL Ken Stephen Medal.

The Club also had the great honour of Sea Eagles legends Cliff Lyons and Steve Menzies being inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame in a terrific acknowledgement of their great service to Manly and the game in general.

It is also important to acknowledge the service of departed players Lewis Brown, Jackson Hastings, Brian Kelly, Shaun Lane, Darcy Lussick, Joey Lussick, Peter Schuster, Akuila Uate, Jonathan Wright, Matthew Wright, and Tom Wright. We thank them sincerely for their hard work and efforts during their time with us and wish them every success in their future endeavours.

We also thank Michael Dinoris for 15 years of tremendous service as our much loved mascot, Egor the Eagle. Michael has decided to concentrate on his business and we will miss his fun performances on the sidelines.

Finally, as we close the chapter on the 2018 season, the Club thanks Trent Barrett for his hard work over the past three years as Head Coach.

A big thank you to all staff members, coaching staff, players, officials and volunteers for the hard work you put in to make our great Club what it is.

A huge thank you also to all our wonderful Corporate Partners, our Members and loyal fans for supporting us throughout the year. You collectively, are our lifeblood.

Our Club has a very bright future in so many different areas and the hard work is just beginning again under new Coach Des Hasler, who will be in charge for the next three seasons.

Our sincere appreciation for everyone who has been a part of our Sea Eagles family throughout 2018. Your continued support is invaluable and we look forward to seeing you again at Lottoland in 2019.

In the meantime, our very best wishes to all for a safe, fun-filled and peaceful festive season and a year ahead that brings you every joy you seek.

JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES 2018HAROLD MATTHEWS

The Harold Matthews team won the Club’s first ever NSWRL Harold Matthews Cup this season defeating the Parramatta Eels (the most successful club in the Harold Matthews competition), 26-18. The competition commenced in 1970. Manly were not able to achieve this feat until the 48th year of competition.

Following the Grand Final, the team were invited to represent NSWRL in the NSW City vs Country match against the CRL Andrew Johns Cup winners as the curtain raiser to the NRL Raiders vs Dragons game in Mudgee on Sunday 20 May. The Manly Sea Eagles defeated the Western Rams and were crowned 2018 NSW State Champions.

In 2017, Manly were the runner’s up losing to Newcastle Knights in extra time. To have two junior representative teams make the Harold Matthews Grand Final in consecutive years and win what is widely recognised as the most prestigious youth competition in NSW demonstrates Manly’s pathways are strong and the Club’s current strategy of player identification and development is effective.

Five players were selected into the NSWRL pathways program in 2018: Sam Pinomi, Kaeo Weekes, Tyreece Matangi, Toni Mataele and Tolu Koula.

S G BALL SEASON 2018 - FINALISTS

SG BALL The 2018 SG Ball season was also a success with the team finishing 7th and making the semi- finals. The squad was comprised of Under 17 and Under 18 players with a large portion of the playing group playing a year up (and former members of our successful 2017 Harold Matthews squad). Although the squad experienced many injuries to key players, it opened up opportunities for the younger squad members and they excelled. The experience will be invaluable heading into the 2019 SG Ball competition.

Three players were selected into the NSWRL pathways program in 2018: Josh Schuster, Albert Hopoate and Max Lehmann.

Furthermore, at the completion of the SG Ball competition, eight Under 18 players were selected to progress to the Under 20s squad, being: Keith Titmuss, Raff Letoi, Livingston Chee Kam, Sean Vaivelata, Max Lehmann, Dane Oostendorp, Hyrum Wichman and Tyran Ott.

GOLDEN EAGLES REPORT 2018

As another year draws to a close and we look back over the past season a couple of highlights well and truly stand out in a not so great year for the Manly club. The 54-0 annihilation of the Parramatta Eels at Brookvale Oval in Round 2 will be remembered by the fans that attended for the rest of their lives. Simply put, it was sensational and showed what the team could do when they were switched on and there were no external distractions.

The other highlight was also at Brookvale Oval and came in Round 19. Unfortunately, Manly were put to the sword 24-56 that day by a rampaging and eventual Premiers in the Sydney Roosters. However, nothing could take away the atmosphere of yet another glorious Golden Eagles day. To see the likes of the Yakich brothers and Freddy Jones with huge smiles on their faces, along with over 130 past players as they met with their fans and chatted and signed memorabilia was only matched by the look on the fans’ faces as they met with their childhood heroes and enjoyed a beer or two with them at Brookvale Oval and back at the Leagues Club after the match. A fantastic day and night were had by one and all and the next Golden Eagles day can’t roll around quick enough!

To say that the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles had a disappointing season 2018 would be an understatement, resulting in the club nearly ‘winning’ its first ever wooden spoon. Every cloud has a silver lining though and it’s like the cavalry arriv-ing with club legends rallying together and returning to help restore the club to former glories. Des Hasler is returning as coach in 2019 and will be joined by the likes of Matt Ballin as Jersey Flegg coach and Welfare Officer, Donny Singe as Head Trainer, Noel ‘Crusher’ Cleal as Recruitment Officer and Michael Monaghan as Pathways / Specialist coach to help the many talented youngsters in the Manly lower grades process to 1st Grade. With the likes of Chad Randall, Steve Menzies and Cliff Lyons also playing their part it feels like the ‘team’ is back together and anticipation for the coming season is higher than it has been in a long time.

Fans too are doing their part by becoming members of the Sea Eagles and the Football Club in record numbers for this time of the off season - if you haven’t joined yet don’t miss out on what is going to be the start of another period of dominance by the mighty Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and get your membership for season 2019.

From all here at the Golden Eagles we hope you and your family have a fun and safe holiday season and we look forward to seeing you at Brookie in season 2019. Go Manly!

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2018

Each one of the eight Sea Eagles Premierships are cherished and as a Club we take pride in commemorating them.

In 2018 we paid tribute to not one but two historic Premierships, the ten-year anniversary of the record breaking 40 nil victory against the Melbourne Storm in 2008 and the 40-year anniversary of the unprecedented and courageous Grand Final replay victory 16 nil against the Cronulla Sharks.

The modern-day Sea Eagle fan will probably always remember the 2008 Premiership against a star-studded Melbourne Storm side in the Centenary Year of Rugby League. The team came back from a disappointing loss the year before to ink their names in the rugby league history books and send the great Steve “Beaver” Menzies out in the most glorious way possible, the stuff of dreams.

Forty years ago, in another era of the game of rugby league, the Sea Eagles team of 1978 won a Premiership in the most difficult and extraordinary of circumstances, winning six games in 25 days – one match in just over every fourth day, including two replay matches.

“This was a team of heroes. Their feats unlikely to be equalled, let alone surpassed ”.

The toll on the players through injury and fatigue was almost unbelievable. Coach Frank Stanton said he’d never seen the like of the commitment [the players] had to one another, not to give in despite whatever happened. Sheer mind over matter. The stuff of legends.

Captain Max Krilich and former ‘78 team member, Leagues Club Chairman Ian Thomson contacted all the team members and set a date (Friday September 28) for what would become a rare reunion dinner attended by the majority of the team, as well as Coach Frank Stanton and then Club Secretary and Sea Eagles supremo, Ken Arthurson, their partners and families, Football Club members and fans. The Football Club Board assisted by promoting the event to its members and producing a special cap for each of the players, presented by Chairman Cliff Lyons, featuring their individual first grade player number – a tradition the Football Club continues to this day.

Only a few of the former players were sadly unable to attend – Terry Randall who out of Sydney, Ray Branigan, John Gibbs and John Harvey. The rest of the team were there, pictured below. It was a great evening hosted by Manly tragic Vic Larusso, featuring interviews with Frank Stanton, Ken Arthurson and Max Krilich, and followed by a spirited rendition of the Manly victory song and a few beers amongst old mates.

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2018

VALEWe mourn each and every Football Club member who passes away. We often don’t hear of the passing of one of our members until sometime later – for example when we send an email or mail correspondence. If we have omitted to note any member who has passed away it is not intentional. We pass on our condolences to the family and friends of any football club member who has passed away in 2018.

We are extremely sad to report the passing of Keith Barsi, member number 104. Keith attended the very first meeting of the fledging Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club on 20 November 1946 at the Luana Hall on Pittwater Road, Dee Why, site of the current Dee Why RSL. Keith was a continuous member for the entire period up until his passing on Wednesday 18 July 2018. Keith was one of our last links to the formation of our great Club. He was also a lovely bloke who never missed an AGM. We thank Keith for his loyalty to our Club.

We also note with extreme sadness the passing of Jennifer Kable, member number 111. Jennifer was a devout Sea Eagles fan and another of our members who rarely missed an AGM with her mother Barbara (Babs). Board member Julie Sibraa represented the MWRLFC at her memorial service along with many other women football club members where she was remembered as a great character and avid traveller, beloved by her family and wide circle of friends. Jennifer’s family will maintain her season ticket seat at Brookvale so she will never miss a game.

ROBERT(BOB)LENON(1936-2018)LIFEMEMBER

Robert (Bob) Lenon, player number 117, was a Life Member of the MWRLFC. Bob made his first grade debut in 1957 and played 26 first grade games between 1957 and 1961. He also played many games in the lower grades, including captaining the 1960 reserve grade side to a Premiership as well as coaching the Premiership winning President’s Cup side in 1970 - the first since the Club joined the competition. He was a half back who for much of his career was a back up for Australian Kangaroo half Peter Burke. Bob was a one club man who could have played first grade for any other club but stayed with Manly. He served on the MWDRLFC Committee for many years and was elected a Life Member in 1994.

WILLIAM(BILL)POOLE(1920-2018)LIFEMEMBER

Bill was given Life Membership in 1993 as recognition of his dedicated and unpaid work for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles over a very long period. He was the ground announcer at Brookvale Oval for many years for both the first grade games and the junior league. There was a period of time when the Sea Eagles Head Office just had two people paid to work there – one of which was then Secretary Ken Arthurson. Bill volunteered in the office to assist Ken in the running of the Club – no job was too small for him. His work didn’t stop there – he also volunteered for the Manly-Warringah Leagues Club where he was also granted Life Membership in recognition of his work. Bill was regularly seen at Brookvale Oval watching Sea Eagles games up until a few years ago when he was well into his nineties. To say Bill lived for the Sea Eagles was an understatement.

DEMPSEYJOY(1946-2018)

Dempsey was player number 234, playing 13 first grade games and numerous reserve grade games. Dempsey’s playing career in Rugby League commenced as a junior with the Manly Christian Brothers Rugby League Club before eventually changing codes to play rugby union for many seasons with the Manly Rugby Union Club, mainly as a lock forward, accumulating over 125 games in first-grade. Following approaches from the neighbouring strong Manly Warringah District Rugby League Football Club, Dempsey decided to change codes again and in 1975 and 1977 he played numerous games in reserve grade and including thirteen first-grade games, mainly in the front row. Before retiring from playing rugby league he spent time as Captain Coach with the Tamworth City Rugby League Football Club and successfully won the premiership during his time there. He was an active member of the Manly Lifesaving Club for many years and owned a surf shop on the beachfront. Dempsey was one of Manly’s great local characters, often found of an evening in the Steyne Hotel knocking back a few schooners.

RONDEANOAM(1929-2018)

Ronald Joseph Dean OAM, member number 158 was a long time volunteer and official of the Manly-Warringah Junior Rugby League and a member of the MWRLFC since 1967. Ron played a key role in the formation of the Forestville Ferrets Junior Rugby League Club in 1967. He represented that Club on the Junior Rugby League Committee and volunteered his services on several sub-committees. Between 1975 and 1987 Ron served as Secretary of the Manly-Warringah Junior Rugby League, 1988 and 1998 as its President and 1999 and 2010 as its Patron. Ron was a Life Member of the Manly-Warringah Junior Rugby League, a Life Member of the Manly-Warringah District Rugby League Referees Association and a Life Member of the Manly-Warringah Sporting Union. In June 2007 Ron was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to Rugby League football in the Manly-Warringah district. Ron’s son Philip was one of the original, long-serving members of the Football Club board post privatisation, working tirelessly to represent the interests of the original members and ensure the heritage of our great Club.
