The Manila-Pasay Workshop will give participants a glimpse of Hispanic Manila with a visit to the old walled-city of Intramuros where they will find Fort Santiago and San Agustin Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Participants will also tour the U.S. Embassy complex which also suffered as a result of recent typhoons and will learn how the U.S. Embassy is mitigating the effects of future storms and planning in the long-term. A special lunch and tour of the Mall of Asia (Asia’s largest mall) will showcase SM’s disaster resilient and sustainable features. Since the opening of SM Mall of Asia, the complex stands free of any effects of disasters including 50 typhoons, 4 earthquakes, and 2 massive flooding incidents due to monsoon rains. Makati CBD & Bonifacio Global City Workshop

The Makati CBD-Fort Bonifacio Global City (BGC) workshop will give participants an understanding of two premier central business districts with a visit to the Ayala Triangle Gardens, the Philippine Stock Exchange, Ayala Museum, and BGC. There will also be an exclusive rare chance to enter the underground tunnels, built by the U.S. military when BGC was known as Fort McKinley.

The workshop will focus on urban city sustainability and resiliency challenges: open spaces, urban mobility, water management, within the central business districts of highly urbanized areas. BGC’s detention tank is one of the most important features of the city as it serves to prevent storm-water run-off and flooding. Another signifant landmark is the Manila American Battle Monument and its historic memorial, adjacent to BGC.

The Marikina City and Pasig River Workshop will give the participants a chance to see first-hand, the efforts made by a city located on a flood plain with the Marikina River and West Valley Fault running through its center. Marikina is also known as the “Shoe Capital of the Philippines.” A visit to the Shoe Museum, which houses the world-famous collection of former first lady, Imelda Marcos, will be included on the itinerary.

The Workshop will focus on how a city such as Marikina is tackling the issues of flooding, resiliency, and earthquake preparedness. Two former Mayors, who have led the “resilient and livable city” initiatives will share their challenges and experiences. The workshop will also cover the environmental challenges of the Marikina-Pasig Rivers and Laguna Lake in highly populated urban settings.
