Free help offered to farmersby Denise Gunn

The announcement of Fonterra’s forecast drop in the dairy payout in December prompted Taranaki woman Vanessa Ingram to set up a social media group offering free help to farmers.

Fonterra had reduced its forecast farm-gate milk price for the 2014/15 season from $5.30 per kgMS to $4.70 per kgMS.

Fonterra chairman John Wilson said although farmers were expecting this lower forecast, the revision will put pressure on their farming business budgets.

“There is st i l l considerable volatility in global dairy markets.”

“Falling oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty in Russia and Ukraine, and subdued demand from China as it continues to work through inventory are all contributing to ongoing volatility and weak demand,” he said.

Vanessa said the ‘Free help for our NZ Farmers’ Facebook page was set up to help farmers out.

“They are going through a hard time at the moment.”

Vanessa has received a positive response with people joining the group from all over New Zealand offering to lend a hand with milking, fencing, spraying weeds, grubbing thistles, working with livestock, cooking and baking. The help offered is available to all farmers, not just those in the dairy industry.

“I would like to see the farming community go back to what is used to be with everybody helping each other out, especially in times of need,” she said.

Vanessa grew up on a dairy farm near Toko and began milking cows from the age of 12. She is familiar with the challenges farmers face on the farm and the flow-on effect the drop in payout will have on businesses and the community.

Now a full-time mother living in Stratford, Vanessa is willing to help

farmers in the region with milking. “I don’t mind using my spare time helping,” she said.

Vanessa has also taken the free help concept a step further by placing fuel vouchers into a couple of farmer’s letterboxes in the Manawatu.

“I was given some fuel vouchers when I was shifting, then put them into random farmer’s letterboxes while driving from Dannevirke to Stratford.”

Vanessa would welcome more members with offers of help and encourages farmers to also join the group to take up these offers.

Visit the group’s Facebook page ‘Free Help for our NZ Farmers’ for more information.

stop? As any farmer knows, the answer is — ‘everything!’ — as you can see in our light-hearted front page cartoon. This January the Taranaki Farming Lifestyles is a little different, as we’ve matched all of the

top agricultural support businesses between our covers with a bustling rural scene on page one.

The aim of the game is to match the numbers next to each little image of Kiwi farm life to the businesses who exemplify them.

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes

that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

Restrictions taking effect with hot, dry weatherby Denise Gunn

As the current run of hot, dry weather continues, restrictions on water takes and fires are being put in place.

Rivers and streams in many parts of the Horizons region are running low and consent holders are being asked to conserve irrigation water.

Restrictions have already been placed on smaller streams in the Tararua district. Parts of the Manawatu, Whanganui and Rangitikei catchments are also being monitored closely.

Horizons’ regulations around water use allow for certain quantities of water to be taken out of rivers and streams when they are flowing above a minimum level. Once the rivers drop below that level, restrictions are put on the limit and in some cases stop water being taken.

Horizons group manager for strategy and regulation Nic Peet said Horizons recognises that water takes providing people with clean safe drinking water will need to continue even where rivers are below minimum flows.

“We are communicating with our district and city councils to ensure water is used efficiently and that appropriate restrictions are in place for urban use,” said Dr Peet.

“Water takes for stock water will need to continue as this is a significant welfare issue.”

Dr Peet said irrigators are often among the first impacted by water restrictions as provision of water for people and animals is the first priority.

“Throughout the region, current compliance with low flow restrictions is excellent with no non-compliances issued over the past year.

“Consent holders are encouraged to continue to adhere to consent conditions in order to provide for people and animals and manage impacts on the environment.”

Horizons monitor river flows on a daily basis, publishing the information

on its website. Consent holders are encouraged to check this data regularly. Any concerns about water restrictions and its effects can be directed to Horizons on 0508 800 800.

The Manawatu District Council (MDC) has also put new fire restrictions in place due to the dry conditions. As these restrictions are reviewed daily, it is recommended that the council’s website is checked or contact is made to its call centre on 323 0000 before lighting a fire.

Michael began building up herd numbers through purchasing stock from dispersal sales, and

from Colin and Catherine Hutchings of Brooklands Simmentals in Dannevirke. Eighty percent of his herd now descend from those purchases.

In addition, Michael bought an in-calf heifer, bred at Ladburn Stud in Leeston, South Canterbury, from the national sales in 2007. Michael’s current herd sire is out of this heifer. And three years ago he bought the top-priced polled Simmental bull from Idesia

Stud in Northland. Other bulls have been sourced from both Brooklands Simmentals and Glen Anthony Stud near Waipukurau.

Thirty-eight cows and in-calf heifers, four stud bulls, and 14 yearling bulls now run on Michael’s 41ha farm near Shannon. All his yearling heifers are grazed on his parents property which borders onto his farm. His parents previously milked an Ayrshire herd on their farm.

Michael named his Simmental stud after a small town called Peplow in England, where he stayed during his travels in 2002.

When Michael took over his farm that same year, gorse and scrub covered 10 acres of it. However, with continuous spraying, Michael said they’ve beaten it.

Scrub has been cut and Michael has even carved out a pond for ducks and other wildlife.

Fertiliser, usually dicalsic phosphate, is applied annually.

The farm is a mixture of flat and rolling country, situated close to the Tararua Ranges. Winters can be extremely wet with an average annual rainfall between 1,200–1,300ml.

“We can get a bit of pugging in the winter,” said Michael.

“Summers are not too bad, although last year we did have a drought.”

SIMMENTALsuccess

The progeny resulting from crossing a Simmental bull with Hereford/Friesian cross cows so impressed Michael Malmo, he decided to establish a purebred Simmental herd.

Hay and baleage are bought in to feed stock.

Michael has an extensive farming background with both dairy and beef cattle.

The stud’s bulls are advertised through TradeMe. Some of these bulls have been sent as far south as the Catlins and north to Waikato.

Michael’s bulls are sold to farmers mostly wanting them for beef breeding. A few locals buy them for dairy breeding.

“Cull cows go to AFFCO after weaning their calves early March,” he said.

“Surplus bulls are killed at 18 months and usually kill out at 400 to 445kg.”

Simmentals particularly appeal to Michael due to the fast growth rate.

“They are killable before the second winter.”

Since the purchase of his first polled Simmental bull three years ago, Michael plans to keep breeding polled stock and easy-calving cattle with great temperaments.

He’s found polled stock are becoming more popular and there is no de-horning required later on.

“Every year it gets more exciting as you are striving to breed better stock by using good bulls,” he said.

Michael also manages cattle for Seymours Transport near Foxton. This stock management role involves caring for cattle arriving on their property during a stopover while being transported to the South Island. Up to 500 truck and trailer units deliver stock to Seymours farm on an annual basis. Michael ensures there is hay and water for the

stock. There is also a small eight-aside herringbone shed on the property to milk cows if required. Since 2004, Michael has milked more than 14,000 cows.

The length of time stock stay on this property ranges from

overnight stops to up to four days if the ferries stop sailing across Cook Strait.

“They won’t take cattle if there are four metre swells or more,” said Michael.

“From April to August, it’s flat out.”

Eric said their best guess is that Sasha was one of several hundreds of thousands of pets abandoned when soldiers were shipped out for the first war in Iraq.

When the couple moved from the United States to New Zealand, they brought Sasha with them. He spent the final two years of his life in this country.

Currently Eric and Gaby take care of four Siberian Huskies ranging in age from seven years to just four months.

The breed’s character, temperament and independence particularly appeals to Eric.

“I really like their intelligence and their ability to express their feelings so very accurately,” he said.

A revolutionary Mono™ pump set creating new standards of performance and environmental protection will soon be available to stock farmers throughout New Zealand.

Launching early in 2015, Mono™ will reduce your ongoing power costs by transforming your existing single-phase power source into 3-phase performance – allowing you to pump stock water over long distances without incurring any costly upgrades.

A timely development especially whenRegional Councils are placing stock -farmers’ environmental and sustainability practices increasingly under the microscope.

The couple were living in North Carolina in the United States at the time, and renting a house.

Their landlords owned three Siberian Huskies which they brought with them whenever they visited the Altermanns.

While Eric was in Europe for an overseas conference, Gaby took a short trip with their landlords and the dogs. It was during this trip, while stuck at traffic lights, that a woman knocked on the car window and asked if they would consider adopting a fourth husky. The woman had found the dog on the beach. Gaby went to have a look and came home with the dog, named Sasha.

Eric said when he arrived at the airport, Gaby whispered to him about his longing to have a Husky. “As you can imagine, even through the brain haze, several red warning flags came up and I cautiously answered that yes, when

we have our own home, and a big and secure garden, then I would very much like to look into the possibility of caring for a Husky.”

Gaby told Eric to look into the back of the car.

“And there he was, a black and white male Siberian Husky with one brown and one blue, piercing eye,” said Eric.

“Skin and bones, frightened and giving me a look that melted my heart even today when I think back on that moment.

“Needless to say that I fell in love with him right then and there and we spent the next two years integrating him into our family, giving him all our love and patiently waiting for him to recover from his traumatic experiences.”

“All of our Huskies are an integral part of our family and they come each morning to wake us up, wanting kisses and belly rubs.

“At the same time, they are very energetic dogs and require a lot of exercise.

“There is nothing better to see them smiling and happily panting when coming back from a good training run,” said Eric.

The breed’s same characteristics that appeal to Eric also make them a challenge to care for.

“Huskies, and Malamutes, were originally bred to pull sleds over long distances, so there is a lot of endurance and independent thinking in them.”

He explained that the breed is not owner-focussed or territorial.

“They love you to bits, but if there is something interesting to explore, then they’ll do just that.”

Eric Altermann and his wife Gaby acquired their first Siberian Husky in very unusual

circumstances — after a knock on a car window while stuck at traffic lights.

Training takes place on a variety of landscapesRacing through the forestry

Eric and Gaby are members of the Ridge Runners Sled Dog Club which offers a range of dry-land sled dog racing options. The club, formed in the 1980s, has members all over the lower North Island. The emphasis is on animal welfare, along with support and guidance during training. Any dog breed is welcomed into the club.

Eric said it is a common misconception that only arctic breeds like to run and pull.

Training the dogs takes part on a variety of grounds including the local beaches, forests, and hill trails. Members are constantly scouting for new locations.

Dog training begins at six months of age with command instruction and running alongside the team. As they grow older, half-harnesses are introduced and the dogs join the team on short distances on the way back home. Training is increased gradually. Dogs can participate in races from the age of one year.

“They [the dogs] come into their prime at about the age of three or four years, when stamina and power have fully developed,” said Eric.

However it is not necessary to start with puppies.

“Many very successful dogs have started out training as adults and they are enjoying it right up to their retirement.”

Eric has found people have mixed reactions to northern Arctic dog breeds.

Malamutes, there are also a few that are fearful of them simply because they look like wolves, or have bi-coloured eyes.”

When children have raced up and shouted as they’ve approached Eric’s dogs, he has used this opportunity to educate them towards the correct methods in approaching dogs.

“We, the club, really welcome anyone who loves dogs and wants to become active with them,” said Eric.

“Any breed is welcome and we have had a number of now very successful mushers who joined the club without having a dog, simply to enjoy the training runs.”

The club has a range of information listed at ridgerunnersleddogclub.com.

Observing a wild swarm of bees building a hive in a willow tree outside the door of a mate’s house two years ago, led Matt Telfer to take up beekeeping as a hobby.

buzzingbees

about

Matt was teaching primary school-aged students at the time and a colleague was

encouraging him to apply for a Primary Science Teacher Fellowship under the Royal Society of New Zealand. This fellowship allows teachers to take two terms of paid leave while partnering up with a science organisation to experience science on the job. He was accepted and negotiated a role working under Dr Alastair Robertson, associate professor of Massey’s University’s Ecology Department.

Dr Robertson arranged for Matt to be involved in two projects involving bees — kiwifruit pollination and a manuka honey project.

“In the first few weeks, Alistair arranged for me to visit Dr Mark Goodwin

from Plant and Food in Ruakura, Hamilton,” said Matt.

“I was provided with an opportunity to spend a day with his beekeeper and learned a wealth of information.”

Matt was lent two hives for his research and he drove them back to Palmerston North in the back of a station wagon.

As he reached Bulls, the bees had found the smallest of gaps and were escaping.

“By the time I got them to the apiary, there were masses flying through the car.”

Matt, who is the Manawatu Beekeepers Club chairman, now has five full-sized hives at different sites in the district. “I am currently splitting these hives and hope to have 10 to 15 by next

winter.” Matt buys the beehive boxes flat-packed and assembles them at home. “I have a friend who kindly allows me to hot wax dip my boxes in Paraffin

wax which gives them extra protection against the elements.”

“I assemble all my own frames including wiring and waxing,” he said.

Build with confidence – choose New Zealand’s favourite home buildersPhone 06 357 80200800 42 45 46 www.gjgardner.co.nz

Your final assurance is this simple fact – more New Zealanders trust G.J.Gardner to build their homes than any other builder.

“I try to stay away from plastic as much as possible.”

Matt said beekeeping involves a range of seasonal tasks with spring and summer being the busiest months.

Preparations for the nectar flow are made in spring and honey is collected in summer. In autumn, measures are taken to winter the bees down and ensure they have enough food to get them through the coldest months and early spring.

“In winter, we pretty much leave bees alone, other than checking to see there is enough food for the upcoming spring build-up,” said Matt.

The bees are treated for Varroa twice a year and checked for American Foul Brood regularly.

Supersedure and swarm cells are removed, and extra room provided or hives split when required to prevent swarming.

“Bees perform best when they are left to their own devices as much as possible.”

Matt finds every aspect of bees and beekeeping fascinating from their anatomy and lifecycle, through to the botany skills acquired to identify nectar and pollen sources.

“Bees are self-organising and have a complex adaptive system based on a network of communication,” he said.

“They are the only insect with a known communication that people can understand.

“As a superorganism, they have been accorded the status of vertebrates with the worker bees representing the body organs necessary for maintenance

and digestion, while the queen and drones represent the female and male genital organs.”

Matt explained that bees are able to calculate complex information regarding co-ordinates of flowers.

“They have very dense brain cells and are capable of learning the location of up to three nectar sources as communicated through their waggle dance.”

Through combining his teaching experience and his role as club chairman, Matt would like to increase involvement with community groups and events to raise awareness of bees, and encourage people to become beekeepers. He

would also like to see the acquisition of a permanent site for the club to use for hives, and to set up buildings for bee education and honey extraction.

“As a teacher, I would like to further build my capacity as a bee educator.

“I envision working with a number of country schools to run their own hives.” Matt finds beekeeping is a great hobby that helps him to relax at the end of

the day. “When I go out to my hives, I have to be relaxed, focussed and in the moment.

“Beekeeping can be very meditative in this way.”

“I am constantly learning and have no doubt that I will not stop learning about bees throughout my entire life.”

A better farm outlook emergeshave enjoyed good rainfall through December and generally there has been substantial grass growth throughout the region. The beef boom is providing a huge economic bonus.

Despite the lowest milk payout forecast in six years, many dairy farmers have been able to capitalise on the current high beef prices by selling cull cows early, and beef stock that has been raised on runoffs. The current trade conflict between Russia and America is quite interesting to follow. The American alliance keep telling us that their trade embargo against Russia is causing the Russian economy to decline.

But a recent article in the New Zealand Herald says that the Russians are looking forward to the 2015 year, despite the country’s economic and political difficulties The Russian president is enjoying up to 87% support according to a recent poll. It may take some time for the two world economic superpowers to

reconcile their differences. Meanwhile, New Zealand farmers will face some challenging issues this year which will have an impact on their private property rights, and the way they conduct their farming business. The government’s new legislation regarding water rights and the threat of agency bureaucrats using their power of right of entry onto farmers’ private property are just two of the issues of concern.

The recent action taken by WorkSafe New Zealand inspectors against a Marlborough farming couple, which resulted in them being fined $40,000 altogether between them in the Blenheim District Court for not wearing helmets while riding their quad bikes on their farm, raises some very serious issues in regard to the right of entry by government agencies onto a farmer’s property.

Surveillance cameras were used in an ‘out to get them’ approach and that is abhorrent to right thinking people. When one looks at court fines that have been awarded in other cases, the award of $40,000 is extremely excessive and is out of kilter with how the rest of New Zealand society is treated.

It is ironic that there is now a call by some cyclists for the law regarding the wearing of cycle helmets to be reviewed, and it seems that if you have a sympathetic doctor a cyclist can obtain an exemption certificate which does not require a helmet on the road. Farmers

of New Zealand is of the view that the current policy of forcing farmers to wear helmets when driving quad bikes on their private farm properties is unworkable for many reasons.

Farmers of New Zealand does support the wearing of helmets for road use. But many of the helmets that are on the market today do not guarantee full protection. It is our understanding that the majority of deaths on farms due to farm bike accidents are caused through injury to the body. According to reports by the Department of Labour the most common accident causing serious injury or death was a slow speed sideways roll on the side of a hill. There are thousands of bikes ridden on farms and by the urban community.

We believe that farm bike manufacturers, farmers and Government agencies need to come to a common position on how to safeguard riders of farm ATV bikes as a result of bike rollover, and get the law changed accordingly. While Farmers of New Zealand concedes that a four-post rollover frame is not the most practical way of dealing with this important issue, we strongly support the work that has been done by a Dargaville company in all-terrain vehicle rollover protection. This is a flexible roll-over lifeguard protector. The manufacturing company claims their design has passed all required tests and the concept is a world first in ATV safety, providing good rider crush protection.

The economic outlook this year for New Zealand farming is largely fine, but with just a few clouds on the horizon. Many regions like Northland

A new generation releasedby Andy Bryenton

Mitsubishi Motors have been building light utility vehicles for over 30 years, catering to the vast rural and trades people’s market.

Which means that when they set out to replace a popular existing model of ute, they do so with the big picture in mind. What works in the Waikato, for example, has to work in Manila and Rangoon, and possibly even northern Wales as well.

Which is why the upgrades — beyond the purely cosmetic — to the next generation Triton ute are so well rounded. The main thrust of development however, has been to bring the new Mitsubishi — released recently at a large motor expo event in Thailand — up to date with the biggest trend in light commercials. Sedan-like handling and ride comfort have been aimed for, here as in the top-tier utes on the market, the venerable Hilux and the currently super-hot Ford Ranger.

Which is not to say that the outgoing

Triton was an iron-hard agricultural implement when it came to ride and handling.

Far from it. But now, with this next-gen model, noise has been reduced, the suspension system reworked, and the steering made more car-like, leaning toward that ideal of a workhorse for the weekdays which can still take the family out shopping.

Under the hood the engine gets a complete overhaul as well. An all new aluminium block 2.4 litre MIVEC turbo

Series five rolls out — the Thai release of the new Triton showcased improved versatility for the popular ute

diesel does the honours, with a claim of 20 per cent more fuel efficiency and hefty torque output of 430Nm. In Thailand, the Triton is offered with both a six-speed manual and a five-speed auto box, and these sound likely to go global, arriving here as options when the Triton lands on Kiwi shores.

The fourth generation Triton was famous for another factor too — good value for money. While other utes topped the sixty thousand dollar mark, a nicely spec’d model would come in at just a whisper over half that.

And while the price in Thai currency helps us just a little in discerning how much the fifth gen Triton may cost in New Zealand, if it’s in that ballpark then buyers will be getting a lot of ute for their dollar.

In the shedwith Megan Fowlie

Summer temperatures are soaring. Groundwater is getting warmer and there is added challenge to keep milk cool once in the vat so farmers across the region will be finding their on-farm refrigeration systems are put to the test.

Regardless of whether temperature warnings are issued from the dairy company, any difficulties around getting milk cool down and collection temperatures where they ought to be should be heeded, now more so now than in previous years. Difficulties meeting current milk temperature requirements

this season may signal problems around the shed’s current capability to meet the tighter milk cooling regulations under the new NZCP1 Code of Practice for milk pre-cooling and storage coming into force next year. Compliance rules will initially apply to new sheds, major upgrades, and sheds which are regularly

non-compliant. Farmers with new sheds and major upgrades will know who they are.

For farmers with existing sheds it’s a good idea to know where they stand. Industry experts recommend getting a thorough audit of dairy refrigeration systems rather than leaving it to the last minute or spending too much in the hope that trouble spots will be sorted.

Good quality refrigeration assessments use accurate data

collected from the individual farm refrigeration plant. Problem areas and times can be pinpointed so farmers know how they will fare under the new regime.

Rather than risk financial disadvantage from spending too much up front or getting pinged with dairy company disincentives farmers can then plan ahead and have the time and knowledge to focus on what work needs to be completed before the regulations take effect.
