*NEW

Two weeks ago, the 54-year-old Manatee Shop-ping Guide announced on its back cover that it was the last issue. Staff was let go, even delivery people were told, sorry, no more job. We stepped in to change that. We hired some shopping guide folks, consulted with others, and we are ready to start anew for you. And we are local. There’s no big group and no out-of-town stock-owner com-pany, just folks who live and work in Manatee County like you do. We do NOT outsource our jobs and we have been publishing news in Mana-tee County for more than 16 years. We started humble in 1992, just as with this venture, but we plan to go gangbusters into season, giving our advertisers the best possible product by providing high circulation, comprehensive home delivery, and keeping costs low. For readers, we hope to provide bargains and information in abundance. You know us as The Islander, THE newspaper on Anna Maria Island, carrying on a reporting tra-dition that began in the 1950s. We’re the “little engine that could.” We hope you’ll jump aboard with us and continue the tradition of the shopping guide in Manatee County. We promise to make it worthwhile to you and to our local economy.

— Publisher, Bonner Joy

TO PARADISE

DETOUR

ADISE

This way to AMI We welcome our Manatee readers to join us on a Detour to Paradise as we ride out the Sept. 29-Nov. 13 closure of the Anna Maria Island Bridge. Sure, the northernmost bridge will be closed for 45 days. But it’s not the only bridge. And hey, Anna Maria Island and the Gulf of Mexico are the place of good vibes and good times, casual charm and cool locale. And we encourage readers to watch in the coming weeks for our ideas about how to make the most out of the 45-day wait.

The Florida Depart-ment of Transportation held its fi nal public meeting Sept. 18 to dis-cuss the planned Sept. 29 closure of the Anna Maria Island Bridge for 45 days of repairs, and to give Islanders a last opportunity for ques-tions and answers. There was much in the way of new infor-mation from the collec-tion of offi cials, which included city and county elected offi cials and staff, a U.S. Coast Guard representative, emer-gency service providers and law enforcement representatives. But there appeared to be as many elected offi cials, government

and business representa-tives ready to speak as there were Islanders and media in the audience. Many of the invited offi cials and guests and DOT staff gave an overview of how their agency or company would deal with the planned 45-day closure, but there were few ques-tions at the end of the meeting that was held at St. Bernard Catho-lic Church in Holmes Beach. DOT District One (Bartow) Secretary Stan Cann said he wanted to allay the fears of many Island business owners that the bridge would not reopen as planned on Nov. 13.

“We and the con-tractor are committed to having this project completed in 45 days or less,” he said. “You have my cell,” he told the city offi cials, “and I want to ensure everybody of our total commitment to get-ting the job done.” No one from con-tractor Quinn Construc-tion Co. of Palmetto attended the meeting, but DOT staff gave assurances that every contingency has been planned and anticipated. In a Sept. 20 state-ment from the DOT, Quinn owner Tom Quinn said, “We are work-ing and will continue

to work as diligently as possible to complete the work on or before schedule.” Greg Wilson of PB Americas, the DOT’s contracted project engineer, said Quinn has every reason to fi nish on time, particularly given the $560,000 fi ne it could face if it doesn’t get the bridge open by Nov. 13. Wilson also announced that projects planned in advance of the closure, such as the extended turn lane on Gulf Drive in Bradenton Beach, and a dedicated turn lane from north-bound 75th Street onto Manatee Avenue east-bound have been com-

pleted. He said the bridge will close at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28. And numerous detour signs will mark the route from State Road 64/Manatee Avenue to Cortez Road to Gulf Drive and back. He also announced that law enforcement will be present at four intersec-tions: Gulf at Cortez, Cortez at 75th Street, 75th Street at Mana-tee Avenue, and East Bay Drive at Manatee Avenue from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the fi rst week of closure. Tentative plans call for law enforcement presence a second week, he said, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gulf Drive-Cortez

Road intersection. And Wilson asked that boaters observe a no-wake zone in the vicinity of the bridge “due to a worker hang-ing under the bridge,” and he asked boaters to lower outriggers for one-leaf openings. There will be no pedestrian traffi c — or fi shing — on the bridge during the 45-day clo-sure. Wilson reminded everyone that the proj-ect does not end when the contractor fi nishes

the “closure” work. “The contract continues through March 2009” and that there may be further one-lane closures at night during that period. He said some work, includ-ing applying four coats of paint, will be done after the closure. DOT offi cials assured the audience that the bridge could reopen to at allow at least one lane of traffi c in the event of an emer-gency evacuation. Manatee County Chief of Emergency Services Mark Edenfi eld assured everyone in attendance that an extra ambulance and medi-cal technicians would be on the Island during this period. And Bayfl ite medical helicoptor ser-vice is ready to provide

service if needed and will transport some emergency cases to Blake Medical Center rather than across the bay to St. Petersburg. West Manatee Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Brett Pollock said an additional truck and at least three personnel will be stationed at the retired, volunteer fi re station in Bradenton Beach during the 45-day closure. Manatee County Sheriff’s Offi ce Sgt. John Kenney, supervi-sor of the Anna Maria substation, said the MCSO vehicles serv-ing the Island have been equipped with “push bumpers” to remove any broken-down vehicles from the [Cortez] bridge in an “expeditious manner.” Ralf Hessler of

Manatee County Area Transit announced that a free shuttle bus will operate a 30-minute loop from 6 a.m. to either 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. from Blake Medical Center to the trolley turnaround at Coquina Beach. He said the Blake-beach shuttle ride and transfers at Blake will be free, but anyone entering along the route will “pay as usual.” Mark Davis, repre-senting the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce said, “Shop local.” Ron Nolan, a resident of Gulf Drive, asked offi cials, “How will you notify us if the bridge reopens?” Spokesper-son Audrey Clarke responded that there will be message signs to alert motorists, e-mails to all

Greg Wilson of PB Americas, the DOT’s contracted project engineer, revealed for the fi rst time at the Sept. 18 meeting the work that will be performed by contractor Quinn Construction during the bridge closure start-ing Sept. 29. That detailed list of work includes: • Structural steel replacement — bascule leafs, including cantilever brackets, sidewalk supports and railing. • Replacement of steel open grid and concrete-fi lled roadway fl ooring. • Concrete deck replacement — 26 spans — which will be completed by doing one lane at a time to allow access. • Cleaning and sealing deck expansion joints. • Lead paint removal. • Replacement of electrical system, power and controls

who registered at the bridge rehab Web site and at meetings, and the Island city’s mayors will be notifi ed. Clarke also offered to be available for emergencies 24/7 via the phone contact number listed on the DOT proj-ect Web site. And Manatee County Commissioner Jane von Hahmann offered to be an inter-mediary between people and the DOT. This will be “a test of your will, but I believe the 45 days [of closure] will go quickly.” For the latest infor-mation on the project, access links to the rehab project are available at www.islander.org. Save dollars, trim trees now

Veteran storm advice for the Manatee newbie Here’s a list of items experts strongly advise you have on hand to weather a storm, in no par-ticular order: Fire extinguisher. Clean containers to store water, one gallon per person per day. Food, canned or dry. Manual can opener. Hand tools: Hammer, nails, ax, knife, pliers, handsaw, screw-drivers. Electric drill with screwdriver bits to install bolts for window protection. Unscented bleach to purify water (eight drops per gallon). Soap. One fl ashlight per person with spare batteries. Battery-operated radio. First-aid kit with Bandages, gauze, scissors, petroleum jelly, antiseptic spray, hydrogen peroxide, antacids, aspirin, thermometer, rubbing alcohol. Extra prescription medicine. Matches, preferably wooden. Disposable eating utensils and plates. Toilet paper. Mosquito repellent. Gallon-size plastic freezer bags to fi ll with water to make ice. Needle and thread. Whistle and air horn. Disinfectant. Grill or Sterno stove with extra fuel. Oven mitts. Lantern with extra fuel. Garbage bags. Rope or heavy cord, 100 feet. Tarpaulin to make temporary roof repairs. Chainsaw and extra fuel. Backup genera-tor and extra fuel. OK. Now for the real advice. The Manatee Shoppers Guide conducted an unscientifi c poll among a handful of folks, asking what are the most important tools (for less than $100) you could have before, during and after a storm? Tool Tim gave the matter some thought and suggested one of those nifty inverters that you can plug into a cigarette lighter in your vehicle and transform the DC current from the battery into AC to power stuff in your house. No, you can’t run your air-conditioner, but you can charge your rechargeable batteries — you do have those, right? — cell phone, laptop computer, even a fan or light in your house if/when the power goes out. Get a big one. Bigger is defi nitely better in this case, so splurge. Tool Jack was more pragmatic: Heavy-weight gloves and work boots that are nail-resistant. “If you’re trying to clear debris, you’re gonna be useless in a half-hour if you’re all cut up and limping,” he said. Jack went into a post-disaster mode, sug-gesting a raft of debris-clearing items. Get a little sledgehammer, something you can swing for a

long time, to break up what’s left of your roof, which is now in your driveway. A crowbar-type device would be good to have, too, and some sort of saw or shears to cut through that cheap metal that seems to be every-where in any type of rubble. Don’t forget a shovel to dig up what’s left of your landscaping, and a rake to fi nish the job. And Jack suggested lots of industrial-size plastic bags for all the debris. He should know: His son lost his mobile home in Punta Gorda post-Hurricane Charley and did a lot of cleanup down there. Tool Jo Ann suggested a screw gun or cord-less, rechargeable screwdriver, as No. 1 in her toolbox. Make sure you’ve got a set of sharp bits, and make sure you can fi nd the chuck and maybe spring for a couple more for when you lose the fi rst one. Spare rechargeable batteries are a good idea. And another echo from the tool crew was a chainsaw. But look before you cut, fi gure out what you’re doing, and you should be fi ne. And then there is the generator issue. Tool Tim pointed out that the most danger-ous aspect of a generator is the fool that hasn’t

read the directions of its use. No, you can’t set it up in your living room if you want to live through the night. No, you can’t run it 24/7 unless you want it to explode. No, you can’t get crafty and work one of those male-to-male electric cords that let you plug the generator into any outlet and power up the whole house, unless you want to electrocute the electric company crew three blocks away with the juice that fl ows, augmented, from your generator to them. No, you can’t fi gure to pour more gas into the overheated generator while it’s running on empty unless you want to blow yourself up when you spill the fuel on the hot parts. Speaking of fuel is another scary issue. Depending on size and consumption rate, gen-erators — and chain saws — need quite a bit. That means you’ve got gallons and gallons of gas sitting around in your garage or carport or somewhere for a long time, just wishing for a match to explode. Be careful with all that. And, of course, all the above assumes there will be a home to come back to after the Big One.

Those lovely trees for which Florida is envied around the country can become our deadly enemies in a heavy storm. So trim them beforehand. Like now. Laurie Feagans, chief of emergency management in Manatee County, likes trees and other plant life, but she likes safety more. Downed trees and their boughs get in the way of emergency crews in a storm, interrupt electric power and they cost taxpayers millions in this county alone. Companies and business places and homeowners need to trim vulnerable parts off trees. Especially branches that stretch over houses, Feagans said, for they are a real threat. There are other aspects to falling

trees — electric power interruptions, for example, and stalled emergency vehicles and the possible reduction of the life of the county’s landfi ll. Florida Power & Light’s Don Sayre said that trees near power lines are a spe-cial problem, since the power outages that result can exacerbate the distress of a storm. Homeowners are urged not to trim trees on their own if they interfere with a power line, he said. FPL’s Web site, fpl.com, has a list of registered tree contrac-tors in our area that can do the job. There are also some other power-related tips on the site. So prepare now. Keep trees trimmed.

Th e myths, the facts, the storms that threaten us

Hurricane Factoids

Just because you’ve always done something doesn’t mean that thing is right. There are several myths about hurricanes we’ve probably believed for years. Unfortu-nately, we’ve wasted a lot of time doing things that are pretty useless. Here are some myths and facts about hurricanes and hurricane season.Myth No. 1: taping windows protects the glass. Taping windows will do little or nothing to prevent breaking in a storm. It is a waste of effort, time and tape. The tape provides little additional strength to the glass and no protection against fl ying debris. Once a hurricane warn-ing has been issued, spend your time closing up shutters or putting plywood over your windows and doors. Myth No. 2: Open the house windows on the

lee side of the storm to balance air pressure or the house will explode. The difference in air pressure between the inside of your house and outside in the storm does not cause the house to blow up, since no house is built airtight. Hurricane winds are intense and variable, and open windows even on the lee side can allow fl ying debris to enter. Once a window or door is shattered, intense winds can enter and rip the house apart trying to get out. Myth No. 3: Any emergency shelter will do if an evacuation is ordered. Storm shelters will open depending on the severity of the storm. Not all shelters may open. Check the radio or television for shelters that are open. Remember that shelter space is not adequate for the population, and conditions

are somewhat primitive, so the best course of action is to stay with friends who live far away from the coast or low-lying areas.Myth No. 4: Government will take care of me after the storm. In Hurricane Andrew’s aftermath in 1992, lines for water, ice and food were often 5,000 people long. It also takes the government several days to mobilize its forces to care for people. Although many lessons on post-disaster recovery were learned after Andrew, it is still strongly recommended that you be able to provide for your family for at least three days — food, water, medical supplies and the like. Prescriptions for two weeks are advised. Remember that resorts in Mississippi are still re-opening after Hurricane Katrina’s land-fall in 2005.

Biggest hurricane ever

On the planet Jupiter, a whirlwind-looking event is called the Great Red Spot. Galileo first saw it 300 years ago. It is about three times the diameter of the Earth.

Deadliest In 1972, an East Pakistan cyclone killed 200,000-500,000 people.

Worst in history In 1900, a hurri-cane struck Galveston, Texas, and basically washed away the city. About 15 per-

cent of the population drowned.

Clockwise-counterclockwise North of the equator, hurricanes spin counterclockwise. South of the equator, they spin clockwise. So the question is: Which way does a hurricane spin if it originates on the equator?

MEOW and SLOSH Storm surge is the biggest threat hur-ricanes produce in Florida. Two com-puter models are used to determine risk for coastal areas. MEOW is Maximum Envelope

of Water, and used to gauge the amount of water likely to be pushed ashore by a storm. SLOSH is the Sea, Lake and Over-land Surge from Hur-ricanes and is used to produce maps showing what degree of fl ood-ing is expected from storms.

Stay alert! Hurricanes can intensify very, very quickly. In 1992, Hur-ricane Andrew went from a Category 1 to a Category 4 storm in 36 hours. In 1969, Hur-ricane Camille went from a Category 1 to a Category 5 storm in 48 hours.

Islander publisher launches new shopping guide HOLMES BEACH, Fla. — MacBonner Inc. announced today the launch of a new publica-tion in Manatee County. Amid reports of cut-backs and layoffs in the publishing industry, Mac-Bonner is expanding its holdings. The company pub-lishes The Islander, a newsweekly serving read-ers on Anna Maria Island by focusing on Island people and Island events and happenings. Now MacBonner has launched the Manatee Shoppers Guide, a weekly publication serving read-ers and bargain hunters throughout the county. The guide has a circu-lation of more than 50,000 copies and employs 15 people from the former Bradenton Shopping Guide. The Manatee Shop-pers Guide fills a void created by the loss of

the 54-year-old Manatee Shopping Guide, which ceased publication earlier this month. “Staff was let go, even delivery people were told , sorry, no more job,” Joy said. “ We s t e p p e d i n t o change that. We hired some shopping guide folks, consulted with others, and we are ready to start anew for you. “We are local. There’s no big group, corporate owner, just folks who live and work in Manatee County like you do. We do NOT outsource jobs and we have been publishing news in Manatee County for more than 16 years.” Joy said the guide would “go gangbusters into season, giving our advertisers the best pos-sible product by pro-viding high circulation, comprehensive home and rack delivery, and keeping costs low.”
