Atul Shinh has moved to the Investec Multi-Asset team as an Investment Specialist, from the Investec London office. Prior to this, Atul led Mercer’s Manager Research coverage for Multi-Asset strategies on a global basis, working with institutional clients on the implementation of these strategies and was also involved in the research of hedge fund strategies within Europe. He previously worked for the AXA Multi-Manager team and for the Financial Services Authority.

Also in a move from Investec’s office in London, Edmund Ng has joined the Multi-Asset team as a Portfolio Manager. Prior to joining the firm in 2013, he managed both long-only EAFE equities and long/short European equities at TT International. He started his career on the sell-side as a European Equity Strategist at Morgan Stanley.

Coronation

Llewellyn Smith, current Head of Operations, has been appointed Chief Operating Officer at Coronation. Prior to joining the company, Llewellyn was a partner at KPMG, responsible for providing audit and risk-related services.

Greg van Til has been appointed in the newly created position, Global Head of Operations. He has been a member of the Coronation investment team since 1998, most recently as Head of Quants.

Greg has handed over the reins to fellow colleague, Keshni Pillay, who will head up the newly formed team of Investment Risk and Performance. This change in name and mandate (from purely quants to include investment and compliance-related risk monitoring) is in line with global best practice. Keshni has nine years’ investment experience and has been with Coronation since 2007.

Adrian van Pallander has joined the fixed interest team. He has been with Coronation since 2002, initially as a Quantitative Analyst and later as co-manager of the Coronation Granite Fixed Income Hedge Fund and the institutional Coronation Flexible Fixed Income and Enhanced Income portfolios.

Money market portfolio manager, Tania Miglietta, left Coronation at the end September 2013 to pursue other interests. Management of all money market portfolios will now fall under the joint care of Head of Fixed Interest, Mark le Roux, and Nomathibana Matshoba. Nomathibana holds a BSc in Actuarial Science and a Masters degree in Mathematics of Finance. She is currently writing her final exams to qualify as an actuary and had worked closely with Tania since 2012.

Stephan Janson joined Coronation in December 2013 as a Fixed Interest Analyst focusing on both domestic and international markets. His experience spans eight years at Deutsche Bank (London), HSH Nordbank and Societe General in various roles including securitsation and corporate debt analysis and trading.

Absa

The Barclays Africa Group (Absa) announced the consolidation of their Wealth and Asset Management capabilities with their investment administration platforms into an integrated unit called Wealth and Investment Management. They believe that the integration will enable them to leverage investment capabilities to the benefit of their retail and institutional client base.

The Asset Management business will continue to operate independently, led by Managing Director Busisa Jiya. The team remains unchanged, including Errol Shear’s role as Chief Investment Officer.

Armien Tyer started as Head of Investment of the Wealth and Investment Management cluster in December 2013. He previously worked as Managing Director of Sanlam Investment Management (SIM) and served on the Board for seven years.

Cannon

Peregrine Holdings acquired Hollard Life’s shareholding in Cannon Asset Managers with effect from 1 December 2013. The Peregrine rationale for the transaction is that it forms part of their strategy to build a larger presence in the asset management space in South Africa. Cannon will continue to operate as an independent boutique value asset manager, from an investment, management and operational perspective, but with the support and backing of the larger Peregrine Group.

Mazi Capital/Visio

After seven years of the partnership that was struck between Mazi Capital (headed by Malungelo Zilimbola) and Visio Capital (headed by Patrice Moyal), the partners have parted ways, with effect from the first quarter of 2014.

This was driven by Malungelo’s wishes to run Mazi Capital as an independent firm, where he is joined by Asanda Notshe who had joined the team in early 2010. The other members of the team remain with Visio Capital. In its current form, Mazi now also has Retail and Private Equity divisions, capabilities they previously did not have.
