I. INFORMACIÓN GENERAL DEL CURSO
A. Descripción del curso
Este curso se enfoca en el análisis, planificación y control de facilidades de producción y de
operaciones. El mismo incluye el uso de técnicas y modelos de decisiones relacionadas a:
predicciones de demanda, mezcla de producto, ubicación de plantas de manufactura, control de
calidad, control de inventario, y el factor humano en el proceso de producción. Pre-requisito:
STAT 201-O
B. Objetivos de contenido
Al finalizar el curso, el estudiante será capaz de:
1. Describir el rol y la terminología utilizada en la Administración de Producción y
Operaciones.
2. Formular y analizar asuntos importantes de capacidad y distribución a largo plazo,
además de incluir la ubicación de las facilidades.
3. Evaluar asuntos de producción tales como: el diseño de procesos, los tipos y enfoques de
procesos, los factores que influyen en la capacidad, el rol de las computadoras y la
tecnología en los procesos de producción y diseño, y las alternativas de medición de
desempeño.
4. Determinar los insumos, las salidas y la naturaleza de la planificación de los materiales
requeridos así como las condiciones bajo las cuales el MRP es más apropiado.
5. Explicar las implicaciones de los itinerarios incluyendo distinguir las necesidades de los
itinerarios en volúmenes altos, bajos e intermedios.

6. Examinar e ilustrar estrategias de Administración de proyectos utilizando las técnicas
PERT/CPM y los diagramas de redes, además de incluir el análisis de redes de tiempo
constante.
7. Definir el término Calidad, explicar sus determinantes, los costos asociados con la
calidad, y discutir el concepto de Administración de Calidad Total.

II. GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION
A. Course Description
This course focuses on the analysis, planning and control of production facilities and operations. It
includes the use of techniques and models for decisions related to: demand forecasts, product mix,
plant location, quality control, inventory control, and the human factor in the production process.
Pre-Requisite: STAT 201-O
B. Content Objectives
Upon completing this course, the student will be able to
1. Describe the role and terminology used in Production and Operations Management.
2. Formulate and analyze important issues about capacity and long-term distribution,
including business locations.
3. Evaluate production issues like: process design, types of processes, factors that affect
the production capacity, the role of computers and technology into the manufacturing
environment and different alternatives to measure the performance in the industry.
4. Determine inputs/outputs using Material Requirement Planning (MRP) techniques.
5. Explain the meaning of forecasting and scheduling at different levels.
6. Examine and illustrate business strategies using PERT/CPM techniques and diagram
including linear programming.
7. Define the term Quality, explain the applications, costs involved, and discuss the
concept of Total Quality Management (TQM).

1. El facilitador explicará detenidamente los requisitos del curso, se asegurará de que los

2. Los estudiantes harán su presentación individual y luego se realizará una actividad
grupal para familiarizarse entre ellos. Luego se elegirá un representante de grupo.
3. El facilitador iniciará una discusión para socializar los conceptos investigados, así
como los ensayos realizados para la actividad en casa número dos.
4. El facilitador aclarará las dudas concernientes a los temas abordados en la discusión
inicial.
5. Los estudiantes iniciarán una discusión en grupos y realizarán un resumen de la
información investigada sobre productividad y calidad y sobre los capítulos 1 y 2. Los
grupos compartirán sus resúmenes, enfatizando los aspectos principales.
6. Los estudiantes continuarán trabajando en grupos sobre el artículo indicado en la
actividad en casa número 6. Los grupos extraerán conclusiones y las compartirán y
debatirán en clase.
7. El facilitador realizará una mesa redonda donde aclarara dudas sobre la información
presentada y presentará temas que no fueron tratados por los estudiantes. Deberá haber
participación activa de los estudiantes.
8. El facilitador entregará un estudio de caso relacionado al mercado global para
discusión en grupos.

E. Activities during the workshop
1. The facilitator will begin the class reviewing the concepts and topics studied in the previous
workshop.
2. Students will use their chapter summaries during this activity. They will exchange their
summaries and will discuss the most important aspects of these two chapters.
3. Working individually or in groups, students will discuss the decision making process.
4. Under the facilitator’s guidance, students will work in groups, recreating a decision making
scenario. The facilitator may assign cases and each group will explain to the class how it
reached a final decision.
5. The facilitator will lead a discussion about decision-making in management and explain its role
in production and operations management.
6. Students will organize a presentation about project management. The facilitator may assign
specific aspects, topics or cases to individual students or groups.
7. The facilitator will wrap-up the presentation explaining project management and will clarify
any doubts.
8. The facilitator will explain the forecasting techniques; students will present their previously
formulated questions.
9. The facilitator will assign forecasting exercises to be completed in class.
10. The facilitator will review the class projects and may include aspects of project management,

6. El facilitador hará una introducción al tema de manejo de recursos para lograr una
calidad superior.
7. El facilitador creará un panel de discusión en el que los estudiantes darán su opinión
acerca de las acciones y/o procesos que se deben llevar a cabo para un buen manejo
de los recursos en una empresa y lograr la mayor utilidad posible.
8. El facilitador explicará el tema de control estadístico de procesos.
9. El facilitador orientará una discusión acerca de las estrategias de procesos y la
planeación de la capacidad. Los estudiantes compartirán la información recogida en la
asignación correspondiente.

will work in groups to research and provide examples.

4. Students will work in groups and the facilitator will assign each group study cases
related to SFP. Groups will discuss the cases and then share their conclusions with the
rest of the class.
5. Groups will develop a layout strategy for a company of their choice, or as assigned by
the facilitator.
6. Still working in groups and under the facilitator´s guidance, students will create a
process flowchart.

1. El facilitador repasará los conceptos y temas del taller previo.
2. El facilitador guiará una discusión en la que se revisaron los conceptos del taller,
haciendo énfasis en su aplicación práctica en producción y operaciones, con la activa
participación de los estudiantes. Podrá organizar una mesa redonda o asignar conceptos
a estudiantes individuales o grupos.
3. Basados en la actividad anterior y con la guía del facilitador, los estudiantes estudiarán
en grupos, la aplicación de los conceptos de producción y operaciones en diferentes
tipos de negocios como restaurantes de comida rápida, centros médicos, oficinas de
abogados, instituciones educativas, entre otros. Cada grupo preparará una breve
presentación, y al final el facilitador ofrecerá su retroalimentación y aclarará dudas.
4. Los estudiantes utilizarán sus notas del capítulo 8 para discutir los puntos más
importantes.
5. El facilitador o los estudiantes podrán contactar para este taller, al encargado de
operaciones de una empresa o negocio local. Los estudiantes interactuarán con el
invitado, para conocer sobre su trabajo y formular preguntas.
6. El facilitador revisará los avances del proyecto de clase e incorporará, a su discreción,
nuevos conceptos.
7. El facilitador cerrará el taller repasando los temas estudiados y el proyecto especial.
8. El facilitador explicará a la clase las asignaciones para el próximo taller.
