LETTERS TO THE EDITORChange in bus routes affects residents, students

Sir, Of late, MTC buses on routes 11G, 17D, 18M, 12G and 5E arebeing diverted via Alagirisamy Salai (K.K. Nagar) instead of theirnormal route via Lakshmanasamy Salai (K.K. Nagar). AlagrisamySalai is a residential colony and also home to a couple of schools, namelySpring Field Matriculation School and PSBB School. The residents andstudents are put to great hardship in crossing the road due to the plyingof MTC buses. The buses are often driven at high speeds and the drivershonk incessantly causing noise and dust pollution. Our flat Associationalso sent an email in this regard to [email protected] on June 29,but no action has been taken so far. I appeal to the MTC officials toreroute the above mentioned bus routes via Lakshmanasamy Salaior via P.T. Rajan Salai to reach Anna Main Road. This will help theschool students and general public in our area to walk without fear.—P. Sathish Kumar, Secretary, Dhanika Apartments WelfareAssociation, Alagirisamy Salai, K.K. Nagar, Ph: 98846 16692

Reversion of one-way rule in Ashok Nagar willhinder commuters

Sir, Reversion of one-way traffic system and bringing status quo ofthe traffic at Ashok Pillar area (Ashok Nagar) will have adverseimpact. Now buses pass through 11th Avenue which is convenient forthe majority of the residents of Ashok Nagar and Jafferkhanpet whocommute daily. With the reversion of one-way traffic, people will haveto go to the Pillar area to catch a bus. Hence, it is desired that suitablearrangement be made for easy accessibility of MTC buses for majorityof the residents of Ashok Nagar and Jafferkhanpet area to commutefreely and comfortably.—B.N. Venugopalan, 12th Avenue, AshokNagar

Be wary of con-women on city roadsSir, Reports on chain snatching has prompted me to report a crime

with a difference in which I could have become a victim of a con-woman.On a recent visit to Tambaram, I was accosted by a woman who

wanted to know if I was the one who had visited a rice mandi a fewminutes earlier. I said ‘No’ and asked her where the rice mandi was asno such shop was in the vicinity. The woman pointed me to a grocerystore across the road and after a few minutes another one next to it.When I got suspicious and tried to avoid her, she kept pursuing me andasked me to open the bag I was carrying. The moment I told her I willcomplain to the police, she acted nervous and started to wail. Seeingthis, passersby started to gather and the woman appealed to them forhelp but I somehow managed to break away. It is not clear what shewould have done or had in mind if I had followed her earlier or opened mybag. She could even have complained to the crowd that I had tried toharass and molest her. Probably she even had an accomplice close byto act as witness. Increasingly women are beginning to play leadingroles in crimes. It seems to be more lucrative than, say, sellingvegetables or flowers, leave alone begging or asking for charity. MayI suggest the authorities take the severest, strictest and most strin-gent action in all such matters.— V.S. Vasan, R/25, Nakkeer Street,West Mambalam

workers were seen clearing the blocks in the inlets on P. T. Rajan Salai(K. K. Nagar) on July 29.

NO HOLDS BARREDBy M.A. SADANANDSALAAM KALAM

Of the earth and back to the earth after conquering thehearts of millions of the diverse humanity of this vastcountry, our ‘Missile Man’ is sleeping in his sand bed inRameswaram where none can henceforth pick his macrobrain to clear man’s doubts on science and the art of living. He had proclaimed dozens of ways of paths to happiness viamagical routes which were as different as chalk is fromcheese.

Wearing a smile through thick and thin, since nothingworldly could deprive him of his natural missile, his smileconverted the fence sitters into his friends for life, ridingwhich wave he engulfed the office of the President of Indiaeasily. Millions of his countrymen were wonderstruck bythe apparition of such quality and nobility of mind that they,in unison, like Oliver Twist, begged, “Please, Sir, we wantsome more!”

There were other Presidents who have set precedents inour nascent sovereign government, but Kalam’s was aspecial brand where he literally adopted the country as hisfamily and behaved like the lord of the house, sharing hishappiness and sorrow, if any, with the rest of the countrythrough sage advice. There was no showmanship in any ofhis actions, for his concerns for any cause were genuine andpeople-oriented, with a missionary zeal to discover solutionsunder the system of governance attuned to the discoveryof genuine happiness to the largest number in the democraticsystem, with his wit, wisdom and persuasion.

Kalam saw the millions of his countrymen asbrothers and sisters and could not shed that feeling to starthis own unitary family. The result was that, though he wasa Missile Man and the atoms split under his touch, heremained a singularly brilliant man. When he was buried on30th July, his singularity was affirmed.

Kalam’s life can be summed up by the Thiagaraja Kriti heloved so much: Entaro mahanubhavulu, which was playedfor him on the silver jubilee of Art of Living in Bangalore bya group of 1008 veena players to welcome him as chief guestin February, 2006. In translation, it means “salutations tothe great men of the world”. Dr. Kalam was certainly oneamong the greats.

Two from neighbourhood recount meetingswith Abdul Kalam

By S. SruthiI was shocked and dishear-

tened by the sad demise of ourformer President APJ AbdulKalam on July 27.

I was just four years old in2007 when I had the fortune ofmeeting Kalamji.

I had by then won severalprizes in sloka recitationcompetitions. During one of hisvisits to Chennai, Kalam (whohad heard about my slokaprowess) wanted to meet me.

On Jan. 5, 2007, I along withmy parents met Kalamji for 20minutes at the VIP Lounge ofChennai Airport at around 11p.m when he was enroute toDelhi. I recited selected slokasfrom “Bhagavad Gita”, “Rama-yanam”, “Sri Vishnu Saha-

sranamam” and “Narayanee-yam” to him.

Kalamji seemed well versedin Sanskrit and encouraged meto recite more slokas. Heheaped praises and blessed meon a bright future. The meetingwill ever remain close to myheart. When I think back, itwas really a heart warmingexperience and a real eyeopener that a person from adifferent religion could be sobroadminded to listen andappreciate Hindu slokasrecited by a 4-year-old child.

I salute you APJ AbdulKalam.

By V. BalambalIt came as a shock to hear

the sad demise of our formerPresident A.P.J. Abdul Kalamon July 27.

He was known to be a greatscientist, writer, speaker, researcher, teacher and, mostof all, a noble soul. His love andcare for students is well knownand I was witness to one suchincident of his personallymeeting my 9-year-oldgrandson in 2004 when he wasthe President of India.

My grandson Nitarshan livesabroad. He is at present doinghis third year ComputerTechnology in WaterlooUniversity (Canada). He hasbeen a voracious reader sincechildhood and at the age of 7 hehad read and got inspired byKalam’s books ‘Wings of Fire’and ‘India Vision 2020’.

When Kalam becamePresident, Nitarshan managedto get his official email id andsent him a mail giving his viewsand appreciation of the booksand requested to meet himwhen he came to India. Kalampromptly wrote backappreciating Nitarshan’s emailand asked him to contactwhenever he was in India.

In March 2004, whenNitarshan was in India for afamily function, he promptlysent an email to Kalam withhis local contact number.Within three days, thePresident’s office respondedand arranged a meeting onMarch 12 at RashtrapathiBhawan. It was the mostunexpected call and we were

overwhelmed by Kalam’shumility.

Nitarshan, who was only 9then, visited RashtrapatiBhavan with his parents andmet Abdul Kalam. Nitarshanrecounted that Kalam’s roomwas simple and he was verykind and humble. He sharedmany scientific matters andhis books with Nitarshan.Kalam advised Nitarshannever to forget his roots andremain focused in life.

They were later shownaround the Presidential palace. It remains as one of the mostinspiring moments ofNitarshan’s life.
