TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC – 8N.C. VASANTHAKOKILAM

Now entered the life of Vasanthakokilam: a person of persua-sive-plus charm and some clout in the fast-growing TamilCinema, C. K. Sathasivam.

Hailing from a family of noted and successful lawyers ofCoimbatore, Sathasivam (Sachi, for short) was drawn to thenew medium of cinema and he sailed into it with glee and gusto. He gave up law and learnt the rudiments of filmmaking forwhich he underwent limited training in London.

A man of wide contacts in Madras in its social and culturalcircles, he worked as Associate Director with the noted Ameri-can Tamil filmmaker Ellis R. Dungan in his historic maidenmovie ‘Sathi Leelavathi’ (1936) produced by the Coimbatore-based producer, A. N. Maruthachalam Chettiar.

Chettiar had already produced the box-office bonanza di-rected by Manik Lal Tandon ‘Bhama Vijayam’ (1934) in whichthe Carnatic music legend who still lives undiminished longafter his demise, G. N. Balasubramaniam (GNB) took his bowin movies as Sage Narada. Dungan’s ‘Sathi Leelavathi’ createdhistory and many new talents made waves and forged aheadto conquer peaks of fame and fortune. This roster included theGemini movie mogul S. S. Vasan as story-writer, and latter-day stars M. K. Radha ( of ‘Chandralekha’ fame!), T. S. Balaiah, and, last but not the least, the man of destiny, deified leader ofTamils, cult figure and all, M.G. Ramachandran (MGR)!

Sachi also directed ‘Radha Kalyanam’ (1935) with the hand-some, well known musicologist and musician S. Rajam as LordKrishna and Tamil film star M. R. Santhanalakshmi, in hermaiden movie, as Radha.

Sachi entered Vasanthakokilam’s life with bells on, andbecame her patron, protector, and much more, and promotedher as a singer-actress.

In 1940 he produced a much-talked about movie‘Chandragupta Chanakya’ in which Vasanthakokilam lookedstunningly seductive as a blue-blooded princess. Her makeupmaterials came from London and her costumes weremade by expert tailors of Madras and Bangalore. Indeed Sachigave her such a new ‘Hollywood look’ that many found it difficultto recognize her in the movie!

Directed by ‘C.K. Sachi, B. A. B. L’ as he styled himself in thecredits, this movie had singing actor Bhavani K. Sambamurthias the famed King Chandragupta Maurya, the figure of earlyHindu history, together with noted character actor of the dayS. D. R. Chandran as the legendary Chanakya, described byhistorians as ‘the Indian Machiavelli’. Vasanthakokilam played‘Chaya’, a princess who falls in love with the historic hero.

The film was shot at Kali Film Studios, CalcuttaVasanthakokilam sang songs in ragas Navarasa Kannada,Asaveri, Hindolam, Karaharapriya, Behag and a three-voicesong with two others in the raga Malhaar. But the film sankwithout trace soon after release and is hardly rememberedtoday.

Her next film ‘Ganagavathar’ was produced at SundaramSound Studio, Adayar in Madras (which later became SathyaStudios owned by MGR) and was directed by Sachi. It had animpressive cast with NCV as Ganga, along with Nagercoil K.Mahadevan, the singing star and ‘Narada of Tamil cinema’ asBhagirathi and the star of yesteryears, C. V. V. Panthulu, asLord Shiva and T. S. Damayanthi as Parvathi. The excellentsinger P. G. Venkatesan, known as ‘K. L.Saigal of SouthIndia’, played the role of Narada. It also had a fine array ofcomedy artistes like Kali N. Ratnam, C. T. Rajakantham, T.S.Durairaj, M. R. Swaminathan, P. R. Mangalam and T.V.A.Poorani.

In this movie, Vasanthakokilam sang songs in HindustanSurutti, Kalyani, Karaharapriya, Mayamalavagowla andMisrakapi. The film did fairly well, mainly due toits music and NCV’s songs. Sachi presented her with glamourusing special hairstyles and all! ‘Venu Gaanam’ was anothermythological film built around Lord Krishna withVasanthakokilam in the lead role as ‘Mitravinda’, one of thewives of Krishna. It was directed by Murugadasa (MuthuswamiIyer), a pioneer of Tamil Cinema regretfully forgotten today, and was scripted by K. Ramnoth, another neglected genius ofIndian cinema. The well known Gemini Studios screenwriter Ki.Ra (K. Ramachandran) wrote the dialogues while lyrics wereby ‘Kamabadasan’, a Sri Lankan Tamil poet who was activein Tamil Cinema in the bygone decades. G. GovindarajuluNaidu, a noted film music composer of that day, scored themusic. (To be continued)

The heavyrainfall on May 17and 18 led to wa-ter stagnation inseveral streets inthe neighbour-hood therebythrowing normallife out of gear.

There werehuge traffic jams

Heavy rains lead to stagnationin streets

at busy junctions. It took more than a day for the water torecede in some low lying areas.

Three slabs used to arrest pressure inmanhole chamber

Sir, Two more concrete slabs have been kepton top of the slab covering the opening to themanhole chamber in the middle of the road on6th Avenue, Ashok Nagar (near Metrowaterpumping station).

A Metrowater worker told me that this hasbeen done to prevent the main cover frompopping out due to the excess gas pressuregenerated in the manhole chamber.

The additional slabs, being at a raised levelabove the road surface, pose a danger to motor-ists. A friend of mine had a miraculous escapea couple of days back when his bike hit theraised slabs while riding the stretch late in theevening due to poor visibility. I appeal to theMetrowater officials to immediately clear theblockage in the chamber which is leading to theexcess accumulation of gas instead of resort-ing to solutions like putting additional slabs tocounter the pressure which is a danger tomotorists. R. Manohar, Station Road, WestMambalam

Fresh Metrowater cards not issued incollection centers

Sir, The staff in Metrowater Office(Gopalakrishnan Street, T. Nagar) are refus-ing to provide fresh Metrowater cards and areforcing consumers to go to the Metrowateroffice located in far away Pondy Bazaar (nearNaidu Hall).

It is causing hardship to consumers, espe-cially senior citizens. The staff in Pondy Ba-zaar office complain that they are already hardpressed due to shortage of staff and consumersare forced to visit the office numerous times toget the card.

I appeal to the Metrowater officials to issuefresh cards in all the collection offices. B.Ardhanareeswaran, 38, Natesa Iyer Street,T. Nagar, Ph: 90873 19241

EC can pat its own back for a wellconducted election

Sir, I wish to congratulate Rajesh Lakhoni(State Chief Election Officer) and his team forthe smooth conduct of the Assembly Electionsin Tamilnadu on May 16.

It was no doubt a difficult task, but wasexecuted well. With umpteen political partiesvying with one another with exchange of wordsand trying to woo voters by unfair means,Rajesh Lakhoni has walked the tight rope toconduct a fair election. The EC also did its bestby conducting a mass campaign to garner ahigh voter percentage. K. Vaidyanathan,Godsend Apartments, North Usman Road,T. Nagar, Ph: 2815 6891
