MALWARE?• Malware, short for malicious software, is any software used to

disrupt computer or mobile operations, gather sensitive information, gain access to private computer systems, or display unwanted advertising.

• Malware can also be used for cyber vandalism, hacktivism , cyber warfare and various other reasons.

• Malware can make entry onto our computer via questionable file downloads visiting infected websites or through email containing a seemingly benign link or attachment

TYPES OF MALWARE

• Viruses• Trojans

• Ransomware• Spyware• Worms• Adware• Backdoor

VIRUSES• A computer virus is a type of malicious software program ("malware") that,

when executed, replicates by reproducing itself (copying its own source code) or infecting other computer programs by modifying them.• Almost all viruses are attached to a exe file which means the virus may exists on

a system but will not spread until the user opens the infected program• Viruses often originate on the internet and spread when downloading a file

infected with virus p2p file sharing or email attachment.

• Computer viruses currently cause billions of dollars' worth of economic damage each year, due to causing system failure, wasting computer resources, corrupting data, increasing maintenance costs, etc.

Worms• A computer worm is a standalone malware computer program that

replicates itself in order to spread to other computers.• Network worm often use computer network to spread slowing down traffic

and relying on security failures such as outdated OS and No antivirus programs installed.• Worms almost always cause at least some harm to the network, even if only

by consuming bandwidth, whereas viruses almost always corrupt or modify files on a targeted computer.• Viruses require the spreading of an infected host file.• Worms are a standalone software and do not require a host or human help

to spread .

Trojan• A Trojan is harmful piece of software that looks legitimate users

typically tricked into leading at executing it on their systems• Trojans are generally spread by some form of social engineering, for

example where a user is duped into executing an e-mail attachment disguised to be unsuspicious, (e.g., a routine form to be filled in), or by drive-by download. Although their payload can be anything, many modern forms act as a backdoor, contacting a controller which can then have unauthorized access to the affected computer. This infection allows an attacker to access users' personal information such as banking information, passwords, or personal identity (IP address).

• Trojans can not only steal our sensitive data they can also give cyber crooks access to our system.• Trojans are employed to gain access to our system for financial and

personal info • When these Trojans bypass our firewall, it deploys numerous

malicious programs like key loggers, spyware, adware and also worms.• They allow remote third party access of our system.

Ransomware• Ransomware is computer malware that installs covertly on a

victim's computer, executes a cryptovirology attack that adversely affects it, and demands a ransom payment to decrypt it or not publish it.

• Ransomware is a denial-of-access attack that prevents computer users from accessing files, since it is intractable to decrypt the files without the decryption key.• Ransomware attacks are typically carried out using a Trojan that

has a payload disguised as a legitimate file.

How to keep our PC safe ?

• Install Anti-Virus/Malware Software.• Keep Your Anti-Virus Software Up to Date.• Run Regularly Scheduled Scans with Your Anti-Virus Software.• Keep Your Operating System Current. • Secure Your Network.• Think Before You Click.• Keep Your Personal Information Safe.• And do not trust and plug-in some random USB drive.
